Metaphor, although by many still associated exclusively with poetic and artistic language, is a ubiquitous phenomenon. According to Lakoff and Johnson (1980), it plays a key role in understanding of the world. Metaphors, the use of which we often do not realise, also facilitate everyday communication. The aim of this research is to answer the question: in what way metaphors change in the process of translation? The analysis covers selected examples of metaphorical expressions taken from the original novel by Aldous Huxley “A Brave New World” in English, and its translations in Italian and in Polish. The comparison of the three language versions is intended to show similarities and differences both on the lexical and cognitive levels, as well as to identify the translation techniques used.

Especially after 1776, when the American democratic “experiment” giving rise to the United States proved durable, America became a source of social and political inspiration to generations of Europeans and non-Europeans alike. Unsurprisingly, also in the Italian context, the catalog of ways in which American values have been “translated into Italian” and adapted to Italy’s cultural space seems to be ever-growing. Yet, even though the cultural transfer dates back to Christopher Columbus, it is especially since the outbreak of World War II that Italy has been markedly influenced by intellectual and material values generated in the US. At some point, the fascination with the US soared to such a level that, incredibly as it may sound, one of the most iconic provinces of Italy would begin to imagine itself as the forty-ninth state of the US long before Alaska and Hawaii gained their present-day status: in Sicily, the American fascination seems never to abate.

The aim of this article is to demonstrate the differences appearing in French and Italian scientific texts and their translations into Polish. The specificity of the scientific text causes enormous difficulties faced by novice translators. On the one hand, one must faithfully reflect the merits of work, and, on the other hand, take care of the appropriate style of the target text. As Stanisław Gajda [1982] states, each discipline produces a completely separate language termed “scientific sublanguage”, and the basic difficulty in the case of translation by people not familiar with the scientific language seems to be the recreation of the specific nature of the scientific language of the source text in the target text. The multidimensionality and interdisciplinary nature of scientific translation should also be considered because only on the basis of interdisciplinary knowledge can the translator choose the appropriate translation strategy.

The aim of the article is to present the issue of reception of Ugo Foscolo’s works in Poland. A particular attention is paid to the multipart article in Kłosy from 1872 (No. 374–386) devoted to the Italian artist in connection with the transfer of the poet’s remains – many years after his death in England in 1827 – to the Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence in 1871. The paper discusses the strategies adopted in the description of elements of the poet’s biography, including a sentimental key related to the figure of Quirina Mocenni Magiotti, an economic key and a moralizing key. Emphasizing the experience of emigration and compulsory uprooting of the Italian poet from the family land places this special periodical return from beyond the grave in a new context determined by the situation in Poland and the resulting condition of artists forced to emigrate. The analysis also involves unique Polish translations of three of the most important Foscol’s sonnets (*** [Solcata ho fronte]; “In morte del fratello Giovanni”; “A Zacinto”) included within the frame of the article in Kłosy.

For many years, the translation has not been recommended and has even been banned in language teaching and learning. Recently, it seems to regain some success at this field. In this article we briefly analyze how the role of this technique has changed throughout the years within the major language teaching theories so as to get to the reasons for its reassessment we can observe nowadays. Finally, we present some considerations on how we can use activities based on translation in the classroom with a particular regard to Italian language teaching to adult learners who are native speakers of Polish.

Przekład interpunkcji jako osobne i wymagające zadanie tłumacza jest kwestią niedocenianą zarówno przez nauczających warsztatu, jak i przez badaczy. Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na istotę problemu, a także wskazanie i opisanie technik stosowanych w tłumaczeniu na język włoski polskich kontekstów wymagających użycia myślnika (wł. lineetta). Jako znak, którego zastosowania znacząco różnią się w obu badanych językach, myślnik pozwala dostrzec konteksty wymagające kontrastywnego zestawienia dwóch norm przestankowania. Materiał językowy poddany analizie obejmował zbiór reportaży Mariusza Szczygła Nie ma opublikowany w 2018 przez wydawnictwo Dowody na Istnienie oraz włoskie wydanie tomu w przekładzie Marzeny Borejczuk –  Quello che non c’è (Nottetempo, 2021). Analiza ilościowa przykładów wyekscerpowanych z polsko-włoskiego korpusu wykazała znaczną przewagę użyć myślnika w języku polskim (znak pojawił się ponad dziesięciokrotnie częściej w polskiej części materiału). Analiza jakościowa pozwoliła wyodrębnić zastosowane w przekładzie techniki: rozwiązania polegające na odwołaniu się do innych znaków interpunkcyjnych (przecinka, dwukropka i wielokropka), modyfikacje na poziomie leksyki (uzupełnienie tekstu o informacje, których nośnikiem jest w polszczyźnie myślnik) i składni (wprowadzenie dodatkowych podziałów syntaktycznych, zmiana szyku zdania). Przeprowadzona analiza i płynące z niej wnioski mogą być podstawą do dalszych badań kontrastywnych nad interpunkcją, a także przyczynkiem do uzupełnienia dydaktyki języków obcych o zagadnienia związane z przestankowaniem.
Punctuation as an important and challenging part of translation process is a neglected area of interest both in teaching and academic research. The purpose of the present study was therefore to draw attention to its importance and to identify and describe techniques that have been employed in translation of Polish dash to Italian. As the uses of dash (myślnik in Polish and lineetta in Italian) in both languages differ significantly, a proper translation requires not only an in-depth interpretation of the text structures, but also a contrastive analysis of punctuation norms in both languages in question. The linguistic data analysed in this study derived from a collection of reports by Mariusz Szczygieł published in the book Nie ma (Dowody na Istnienie, 2018) and its Italian translation by Marzena Borejczuk Quello che non c’è (Nottetempo, 2021). The topic was investigated by using a combination of both quantitative and qualitative research approaches. Quantitative analysis reveals that the use of dash in Polish is significantly more frequent than in Italian (frequency of dash in Polish text is higher than in Italian by a factor of 10). Qualitative analysis highlighted several techniques applied to translate Polish structures which involve the use of dash: substitution by a different punctuation mark (mainly by comma, colon or ellipsis); lexical modifications (in order to clarify or complete the meaning); reorganization of syntactic structure (including changing syntactic sequences and word order). The findings of the study may be useful both to promote contrastive analysis of punctuation and to develop practical approaches to teaching and learning punctuation of foreign languages.

Ortensio Lando was an Italian promoter of the thought of Erasmus of Rotterdam and he translated Thomas Moore's Utopia into Italian. Also, he was author of a provocative set of paradoxes (Paradossi, Lyon 1532) that were before long translated into French (Paradoxes, translated by Charles Estienne, Paris 1553), and then into English (The Defence of Contraries, translated by Anthony Munday, London 1593). A contrastive analysis of one of the paradoxes („Better to be a fool than a scholar”) in its original and its French translation displays interesting aspects of text reception. The French translator of the text engages into an intellectual play based on the use of rhetorical devices. The translation is purposefully devoid of any veiled and alluded content of ideological nature, whose presence is deducible in the Italian text.

The aim of this article is to illustrate the strategies adopted to translate the dash from Macedonian into Italian in contemporary literary texts. This punctuation mark follows partially different principles in the two languages: morpho-syntactic and informative-textual ones in Macedonian and informative-textual principles in Italian. In addition, the source language reveals a frequent and systematic use of the dash, while it is not very common in the target language nor fully integrated into its punctuation system. From this analysis, two significant data have emerged. Firstly, it has been observed that, amongst the translating strategies of the dash from Macedonian into Italian, what prevails is the use of a “passe-partout” comma, which separates two clauses and replaces stronger punctuation marks, such as the colon, the semicolon, and the period. Secondly, it has been observed that the translation does not contribute to transferring the Macedonian model into the Italian language: the dash of the original text is kept in the target text only when there is equivalence between the two punctuation systems.
il contributo si propone di illustrare le strategie applicate nell’atto traduttivo della lineetta singola dal macedone all’italiano in testi letterari contemporanei. Nelle due lingue il segno di punteggiatura risponde a principi parzialmente diversi: morfosintattici e informativo-testuali in macedone e informativo-testuali per quanto riguarda l’italiano. Inoltre, la lingua di partenza presenta un uso frequente e sistematico della lineetta singola, mentre nella lingua d’arrivo essa non è pienamente integrata nel sistema interpuntivo ed è poco diffusa. Dall’analisi sono emersi due dati significativi. Si è osservato, innanzitutto, che tra le strategie di resa della lineetta dal macedone all’italiano predomina la sostituzione con la virgola “passepartout”, la quale si pone a cavallo di due Enunciati al posto dei segni interpuntivi più forti, quali i due punti, il punto e virgola e il punto fermo. In secondo luogo, si è notato che il risultato della traduzione non contribuisce a diffondere in italiano usi plasmati sul modello macedone: la lineetta singola del testo originale è trasposta nel testo di arrivo unicamente quando c’è equivalenza tra i due sistemi interpuntivi.

The purpose of this paper is to present a comparative analysis of a novel written in Italian by Laura Mancinelli, 'The Twelve Abbots of Challant', and its translation into Polish prepared by Maciej Brzozowski. Focusing on a few examples, such as the use of grammatical tenses and moods, differences in the syntax, and the problems of translating idiomatic and metaphoric expressions, the paper aims to compare the author’s style with that of the translator. The task undertaken by the translator seems very hard indeed from the very beginning due to considerable differences between the Italian and Polish languages in the use of tenses and moods. While the Italian grammar uses four moods, eight simple and seven compound tenses, the frugal Polish grammar makes with just three modes, one compound and three simple tenses. The discussion will clearly illustrate that thanks to some modifications it was possible to translate and preserve the meaning and the spirit of the Italian grammar and style.

Статья посвящена популярному на протяжении всего XVIII столетия “Вертоградцу света” – памятнику русской письменности, переведенному с итальянского языка без указания оригинала в начале 1730-х годов Петром Сафроновым. Как удалось установить, это перевод сочинения Idea del Giardino del Mondo врача и писателя из Равенны Томаззо Томаи (1-е издание 1582).
The paper focuses on an unpublished manuscript known as “Vertogradets Sveta”, a translation from Italian carried out in the early 1730s by Pyotr Safonov. The translation was extremely popular throughout the 18th century. However, the name of the Italian author has not been known to the Russian readers. It is only now that the source of the text has been identified.

In the article entitled ‘The Taming of the Italian Vulgarism or Polish Translators Facing Censorship’ the authors reflect upon the translation of Italian vulgarisms contained in literary works into the Polish language. Two modern teen novels written by Federico Moccia were analyzed for this purpose, namely Tre metri sopra il cielo and its sequel Ho voglia di te. The former was translated into Polish by Krystyna and Eugeniusz Kabatc whereas the latter by Anna Niewęgłowska. The text analyses were performed with the use of TextSTAT. The authors analyze the translations of the expressions within the given contexts and attempt to tackle the questions concerning the translation techniques applied in the traduction of vulgarisms and cuss words as well as shed light on the differences in the translations of the two literary texts.
Dans le présent article, les auteurs réféchissent sur la traduction des vulgarismes italiens en polonais dans les deux romans contemporains pour les jeunes de Federico Moccia : Tre metri sopra il cielo et Ho voglia di te. La traduction du premier livre a été assurée par Krystyna et Eugeniusz Kabatc, tandis que le deuxième, qui constitue la suite des aventures des jeunes héros du premier texte, a été traduit par Anna Niewęgłowska. Après avoir fait une analyse statistique concernant le nombre de mots vulgaires dans les textes originaux et dans leurs traductions respectives, on a examiné les contextes d’apparition des gros mots, ce qui a permis de répertorier les solutions utilisées par les traducteurs de deux textes et les différentes techniques qu’ils ont adoptées dans la traduction des vulgarismes.
