Opis:
The conducted studies were focused on the development of the gypsum material exhibiting self-cleaning properties. To this end, the raw gypsum was mixed with unique TiO2-based photocatalysts, previously modified by nitrogen and/ or carbon doping. The photocatalytic activity of the obtained gypsum plasters was evaluated trough the degradation of model organic compound (Reactive Red 198) under UV-vis irradiation. The impact of the photocatalysts presence on the physicochemical properties of the obtained gypsum plasters was evaluated. Furthermore, the role of non-metals presence on the photocatalytic properties of the TiO2 was determined. It was confirmed that the addition of N,C co-modified titanium dioxide into gypsum bestows this material with self-cleaning properties. The highest dye removal rate was displayed by the gypsum plaster containing optimal amount (10 wt%) of co-modified TiO2/N,C photocatalyst, after 20 hours of UV-vis irradiation.

Opis:
In this study, ceramic TiO2 thin films were prepared on glass substrates using sol-gel and spin-coating methods from the TNBT/ AcOH/ EtOH/ H2O solution. The obtained coatings were subjected to drying at room temperature and were then calcined in the air at different temperatures in a range of 400–600°C in order to obtain clean TiO2   layers. The surface morphology and chemical composition were characterized with the use of a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDX). Research has shown the presence of elements in the TiO2   and the influence of temperatures on layer thickness. Analysis of optical properties and energy gap width of the prepared coatings was determined by means of spectra analysis of absorbance as a function of radiation energy obtained with the use of the UV-VIS spectrophotometer. The obtained spectra of the layers are characterized by a shift of absorption lines towards the visible light wavelengths and the obtained values of band gaps decrease as the calcination temperature rises. The obtained and developed results of TiO2   thin films testify to the wide application possibilities of the layers in elements which use photocatalytic processes such as self-cleaning surfaces, solar cells, pollution removing membranes and optoelectronic components.

Opis:
Magnesium aluminate spinel (MgAl2O4) is an important refractory material of magnesia origin. It is formed by the reaction of magnesium and aluminum oxides. In this study, TiO2 was added to magnesite waste and alumina (Al2O3) powders in different proportions and the mixtures were sintered at different temperatures after shaping. The aim of this study was to produce spinel economically by recycling waste materials. Therefore, titanium dioxide (TiO2) added magnesium aluminate spinel was produced and the products obtained were characterized by XRD and SEM-EDS analyses. In addition, bulk density, apparent porosity and microhardness values were measured and the effects of TiO2 additive on magnesium aluminate properties were examined. The better values were determined in samples doped 4 wt.% TiO2 at the sintering temperature of 1400°C.

Opis:
The presented studies have focused on the influence of TiO2 properties, such as crystalline phase, crystallite size and surface area, on the effectiveness of degradation of azo dyes in water under UV irradiation. Two monoazo dyes: Acid Red 18 (AR18, C20H11N2Na3O10S3) and Acid Yellow 36 (AY36, C18H14N3NaO3S), and one polyazo dye Direct Green 99 (DG99, C44H28N12Na4O14S4) were applied as model compounds. The photocatalysts were prepared from a crude titanium dioxide obtained directly from the production line (sulfate technology) at the Chemical Factory "Police" (Poland). The crude TiO2 was calcinated in air for 1-4h at the temperatures ranging from 600 to 800°C. The BET specific surface area of TiO2 decreased gradually with increasing the calcination temperature. The crude TiO2 exhibited specific surface area of 277 m2/g. In case of the catalysts heated at 600, 700 and 800°C the BET surface area amounted to 62.3-53.3, 33.4-26.8 and 8.9-8.3 m2/g, for the calcination time of 1-4h, respectively. The crystallite size of anatase increased with increasing heat treatment temperature and ranged from 19 to 53 nm, for the temperatures of 600-800°C, respectively. The catalysts annealed at 600 and 700°C contained primarily anatase phase (94-97%), whereas the photocatalysts heated at 800°C were composed mainly of rutile (97-99%). The highest effectiveness of azo dyes degradation was obtained in case of the photocatalyst calcinated for 1h at 700°C. The photocatalyst was composed mainly of anatase (97%) with crystallite size of 27 nm. The most effectively photodegraded was AR18, having the molecular weight of 640.4 g/mol. The most difficult to degrade was AY36 exhibiting the lowest molecular weight from all the dyes used (375.4 g/mol).

Opis:
The occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) such as pharmaceutical compounds (PhACs) is becoming a major global issue due to the persistence, bioaccumulation, and toxicity of these pollutants. Human and animal consumption was recognized as the major sources for pharmaceutical pollution. Existent conventional treatment processes have shown low degradation efficiencies towards PhACs. In this regard, TiO2 based nanocomposite photocatalysis process has presented effective degradation towards PhACs. Operational parameters such as dopant content, catalyst loading, and initial pH were the major factors in the photocatalysis system. In this review, we discuss the recent studies that have employed TiO2 based nanocomposite for the degradation of PhACs. Future research recommendations have also been elaborated.

Opis:
Over the past few decades a rapid increase in standard of living is observed. Rapid urbanization and development of new technologies, which are focused on the needs of a modern society, influence negatively the environment. The present policy of sustainable development is focused on the principles of rational use of scarce resources and raw materials. New technologies should comply with a number of requirements: efficiency, low costs and a low impact on the environment. Photocatalytic processes are the answer for these requirements. Photocatalysis can be used in many aspects of everyday life, offering self-cleaning surfaces, photo-drugs (e.g. for photodynamic therapy) and even photovoltaic devices. Photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in the presence of inorganic photocatalysts (e.g. TiO2 or ZnO) is one of the available methods of removing impurities from aqueous and gaseous phases. The main advantage of this process is the lack of wastes and formation of carbon dioxide, water and simple inorganic ions as end- -products. The aim of our work was to develop new TiO2-based photocatalysts doped with tungsten and molybdenum oxides. A series of materials with different content of the dopants, calcined at various temperatures, was prepared. The photocatalytic activity of the materials was determined following the degradation of two model herbicides: 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T). These compounds are used for the control of weed growth on crop plantations, but in a high dosage they can lead to destruction of the plants. They are readily soluble in water, therefore their use is simple, but brings a great risk to aquatic organisms and people. Photocatalytic degradation of herbicides is the main goal of the 4G-PHOTOCAT project. The efforts are directed towards development of a low-cost photocatalytic paint, that could be used in reactors for groundwater purification. The active ingredient of the paint is a composite material based on TiO2 modified with other metal oxides.
