Opis:
Sewage sludge used for reclamation of egraded areas or in agriculture must have a certain total heavy metal content, as required by law. In practice, however, it is important to carry out a fractional analysis of the elements contained in the sludge. This activity allows to determine the chemical form of a given metal, thanks to which it is possible to assess the assimilability of elements by plants. The study proved that the fraction of certain metals in sewage sludge can vary depending on the period studied. The combination of elements with other compounds in sludge from one treatment plant can vary from month to month. Once analysis has been carried out, it should not be the basis for assessing the bioavailability of metals if sludge from a given treatment plant were to be sampled several times a year.

Opis:
Assessment of the assimilability of elements contained in sewage sludge can only be carried out if their fractions, by means of which the chemical form of the element can be identified, are determined. The total content of heavy metals only makes it possible to determine whether the sludge meets the legal requirements and can be used, inter alia, for reclamation, in agriculture or for the adaptation of land to specific needs that result from waste management plans. Therefore, when planning the agricultural use of sewage sludge, attention should be paid above all to the heavy metal fractions contained in it. This is due to the fact that plants do not assimilate every form of element to the same extent. The research and analysis carried out indicate that the metals were most closely related to fractions IV and III, for example they formed connections with silicates, as well as sulphides and organic matter. The metal forms available to plants occupied a small percentage of the total heavy metal content. It was noted that with the metastable fraction of lead increased along with population equivalent. Furthermore, the population equivalent value did not affect the distribution of individual heavy metal fractions in the sludge.

Opis:
Heavy metal pollutants in the leachate of waste landfill are a potential threat to the environment. In this study, the feasibility of using municipal sewage sludge as barrier material for the containment of heavy metal pollutants from solid waste landfills was evaluated by compaction test and hydraulic conductivity test concerning compaction property, impermeability and heavy metal retardation. Results of the compaction test showed that the maximum dry density of 0.79 g·cm−3 was achieved at the optimum water content of about 60%. The hydraulic conductivities of compacted sewage sludge permeated with synthetic heavy metal solutions were in the range of 1.3×10−8 – 6.2×10−9 cm·s−1, less than 1.0 ×10−−7cm·s−1 recommended by regulations for barrier materials. Chemical analyses on the effluent from the hydraulic conductivity tests indicated that the two target heavy metals, Zn and Cd in the permeants were all retarded by compacted sewage sludge, which might be attributed to the precipitation and adsorption of heavy metal ions. The results of this study suggest that specially prepared material from sewage sludge could be used as a barrier for waste landfills for its low permeability and strong retardation to heavy metal pollutants.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the research from several years of exploitation of the vermiculture plots located in the municipal wastewater treatment plant in Zambrów. It is the only facility in Poland where the vermicompost from municipal sewage sludge has been produced continuously since 2004 (for 16 years). The results of tests of ready-made vermicomposts conducted regularly twice a year (32 tests) were subjected to a simple statistical analysis. The vermicompost analyses of heavy metals, biogenic compounds, organic matter and selected macroelements were compared with the requirements for mineral-organic fertilizers. In terms of the heavy metals content, the highest total content was observed in the first year of plots exploitation, i.e. in 2004, when it amounted to over 1200 mg-1 kg DM. The lowest sum content of heavy metals in vermicomposts, amounting to 398 mg-1 kg DM, was recorded in 2017. The median total content of heavy metals from all observations was 821 mg-1 kg DM. During the whole research period, the content of nutrients in vermicomposts was high, for nitrogen it ranged from 9.8 g-1 kg DM to 31.1 g-1 kg DM (median 14.3 g-1 kg DM), whereas for phosphorus it ranged from 2.1 g-1 kg DM to 14.5 g-1 kg DM (median 5.5 g-1 kg DM). The content of organic matter in the whole several-year study period was high and ranged from 21.3% DM to 59.0% DM (median 33.1% DM). The conducted research confirmed that the use of California earthworm in the process of municipal sewage sludge vermicomposting results in its good mineralization and humification, and the final product (vermicompost) may be a valuable mineral-organic fertilizer.

Opis:
The paper presents the results of research on the use of sewage sludge from the municipal sewage treatment plant in Białystok for fertilization of urban lawns. To fertilize the ground two types of deposits were used: stabilized sludge after the dewatering process in the press and granular sludge after drying in the sludge dryer. Two doses of sludge were used – 5 and 10 kg/m2. Effective microorganisms (EM) were added to the test plots. Both doses of the applied sewage sludge contributed significantly to the growth of grass biomass. Aboveground biomass of the plants was significantly correlated with the concentration of Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn in the surface layer of the soil. The addition of EM to soil containing the dewatered sludge from the press reduced significantly the content of heavy metals in the soil, as opposed to the sludge in a form of granules with addition of EM, which contributed to the increase of their concentration in the soil.

Opis:
Omówiono istniejące metody ekstrakcji sekwencyjnej, przedstawiono rodzaje użytych ekstrahentów, dokonano opisu warunków prowadzonych procesów i oceny zastosowanych metod ekstrakcyjnych. Przeanalizowano wpływ sposobów ekstrakcji sekwencyjnej na rozdział i mobilność metali w osadach ściekowych. Zaprezentowano metodę chemicznej ekstrakcji sekwencyjnej do oceny jakościowej i ilościowej zawartości metali w poszczególnych frakcjach. Ponadto, przedstawiono porównania i wyniki, mające zobrazować skuteczność ekstrakcji sekwencyjnej we wskazaniu realnych zagrożeń chemicznych. Zaobserwowano, iż do form najbardziej mobilnych, a więc łatwo przechodzących do roztworu, należą metale występujące w połączeniach rozpuszczalnych w wodzie, wymienialne oraz metale związane z węglanami (frakcje 1 i 2).
Usage of sewage sludge for agricultural and non-agricultural purposes is limited because of contents of heavy metal particles and sanitary contamination. Heavy metals in soil undergo processes that could cause changes of concentrations and chemical forms, and therefore their overall contents is not always the right indicator of their bioassimilation. Knowledge of immobilization mechanisms related to chemical forms of elements helps to reduce environmental risk. In present paper, sequential extraction methods were presented. These methods allow to determine relative share of each fraction of a certain element, and assess their harmfulness to environment. Sequential analysis can be used to determine concentration of a certain element, which could join to the chain: “sludge - soil - plant - human”. Known methods of sequential extraction have been discussed, types of extractors and description of process parameters have been presented, extraction methods have been valuated. Influence of used extraction method on separation and mobility of metals in sewage sludge has been analyzed. Chemical sequential extraction has been presented as the method for quantitative and qualitative estimation of heavy metals contents in each fraction. In addition, several comparisons and test results have been presented, in order to confirm effectiveness of sequential extraction as the right method to indicate real chemical hazards. It was observed, that metals in easily water-soluble forms, exchangeable metals or bound with carbonates (fraction 1 and 2) are most mobile forms, means easily migrating into the solution. Metals bound with iron oxides, manganese oxides and also bound with organic matter are also easily available, but they are released much slower (fraction 3 and 4). Metals in remaining part, soluble in concentrated acids, are considered as immobile form. Metals in this fraction are chemically stable and biologically inactive. It was indicated, that analysis of chemical forms of metals created during extraction depended on number of fractions, type and concentration of reagents and extraction process parameters. On the basis of results given by various authors, it was concluded that share of certain chemical forms of elements depends on the procedure used for the analysis. Choosing the method of extraction of metals from sewage sludge should depend on the purpose of spacing analysis and types of chemical forms that have to be analyzed. Additionally it was stated, that methods proposed by Tessier and BCR (Commission of European Communities Bureau of Reference) are repeatable and reproducible enough, to be used for fractionation of metals from sewage sludge.

Opis:
Degradation of various compounds with the simultaneous formation of new or activation of initially unavailable chemically bound substances or elements can occur very often during the thermal conversion of organic materials. Thus, the aim of this research was to determine the effect of thermal conversion of municipal sewage sludge on the content of total and water-soluble forms of Cu, Cd, Pb, Zn, and on the phytotoxicity of the solid products generated in the process. The research material consisted of stabilized sewage sludge from municipal sewage treatment plants in Krakow (SS1), Krzeszowice (SS2) and Słomniki (SS3), Malopolska Province. The treatment plants are equipped with systems of mechanical-biological sewage treatment. The content of bioavailable forms was determined after a 24-hour extraction of a sample with redistilled water (material : water = 1: 5). Phytotoxicity of the extracts (material : water = 1 : 5) prepared from unprocessed sewage sludge and from biochars was examined against Lepidium sativum. Thermal conversion of municipal sewage sludge, with reduced air access, caused an increase in the content of total forms of copper, cadmium, lead and zinc in stable products of the process. The process of thermal conversion caused a reduction in the content of water-soluble forms of the elements, which points to their lower bioavailability. Phytotoxicity of sewage sludge was influenced more by its origin, and in consequence by the type of sewage treated, than by thermal conversion.

The study was conducted on three specially prepared test areas along main streets of Bialystok. The experimental plots were sown with two lawn grass mixtures: Eko and Roadside, and three doses of sewage sludge 0.0 (control), 7.5 kg/m2 and 15.0 kg/m2 were used. The calculated bioconcentration factor made possible to determine the mobility of the various metals from the soil solution to the aerial parts of plants. The obtained results showed that the plants absorbed Cd, Zn, Cu easier than Pb and Ni suggesting a high mobility, in particular of Cd, Zn, Cu, and reflects the easiness extraction of those metals by plants. Significant correlations between concentrations of metals in soil and grass were observed, nickel in soil was significantly correlated with Cd, Zn and Cu in plants, while the Zn content in soil with the level of Cu in plants.

Opis:
Rising efficiency of wastewater purification systems causes an increase in the amounts of sewage sludge. Its land application is economically attractive because of low cost and high efficiency. Using sewage sludge in agriculture is one of the most preferred ways of its disposal. Only stabilized sludge and containing permissible concentrations of heavy metals can be used for this purpose. The heavy metals introduction into the environment may cause a potential problem for public health, especially when they percolate from soil to plants or groundwater. Therefore, the concentrations of heavy metals in sludge intended for agriculture are regulated. Determination of total content of heavy metals in digested sludge is not sufficient for the evaluation of a potential risk to the environment. The mobility and toxicity of heavy metals depend strongly on their specific chemical forms. The concentrations of particular heavy metal fractions are the most important parameters, which should be examined in order to estimate the influence of sludge on the environment. The aim of an article was to evaluate the influence of anaerobic digestion on the concentration and variability of chemical forms of selected heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn) in the sewage sludge coming from a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Pulawy (Poland). The content of particular forms of heavy metals in raw and digested sewage sludge was determined by means of the BCR (Community Bureau of Reference) method. The BCR method enables separating four fractions of heavy metals: exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable and residual. The results obtained after analyzing raw sludge showed that the majority of the analyzed heavy metals were predominantly associated with the oxidizable and residual fractions. Only in the case of Zn, the reducible form constituted a greater part. In the case of digested sludge, all studied heavy metals exhibited the most dominant oxidizable and residual fractions; however, the percentages of particular fractions were different than in raw sludge. It was noticed that all heavy metals concentrations were higher in digested sludge in comparison to sludge before anaerobic digestion. The content of heavy metals in the analyzed materials did not exceed the admissible Polish levels for the sludge intended for the agricultural use.

Opis:
The sewage sludge originating from wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) serving rural areas is suggested for agricultural or natural usage. However, sewage sludge is beforehand subjected to the several pre-treatments, which involve stabilization, hygienisation and pre-composting. These methods mainly decrease the amount of organic substances and the presence of microorganisms, but hardly affect the concentrations of heavy metals. The advantages of using sludges as fertilizer for improving and sustaining soil fertility and crop production are numerous. The addition of sewage sludge to soils could affect the potential availability of heavy metals. Trace elements are distributed in the soil in various forms: solid phases, free ions in soil solution, soluble organic-mineral complexes, or adsorbed on colloidal particles. The most undesirable heavy metals in sewage sludge that are toxic for the living organisms include: cadmium, chromium, nickel, lead and mercury. In the study, the concentrations of trace elements (Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg, Ni, Zn, Al, As, Se, B, Ba, Br, Ca, Cu, Fe, Mn, Na, Ga, Li, Mo, Sr, Mg, K, Ru, Tl, V, U) were tested in the sewage sludge obtained from a WWTP serving rural areas (PE< 9 000). In each case, the tested sewage sludge was meeting the criteria of stabilization and was used for agriculture and land reclamation purpose. All the samples were collected in 2016 and subjected to microwave mineralization in a closed system in aqua regia. The total amounts of macro and microelements were determined with a spectrophotometer Coupled Plasma emission ICP-OES. It was found that the total concentrations of trace metals in all of sewage sludges are the same as the Polish regulation limit of pollutants for sludge to be used in agriculture. European legislation is less restrictive and permits higher contents of heavy metals in sludge used for agriculture than Asia. The trace elements (cadmium: 1.16 mg·kg-1/d.m. in thePolish sewage sludge, are much higher than those in the other countries. Copper and zinc were the most prevalent elements observed (111.28 mg·kg-1/d.m. and 282.94 mg·kg-1/d.m., respectively). The concentrations of copper in the Polish sewage sludge are much lower (49–130 mg·kg-1/d.m.) than european sewage sludge (522–562 mg·kg-1/d.m.). The two of the tested heavy metals (beryllium, bismuth) were under the detection limit, while gallium, molybdenum, thallium, vanadium and silver were detected in the concentrations lower than 0.005 mg·kg-1/d.m. According to the obtained results, in all the tested samples, the total amount of trace elements, did not exceed the limit values in sewage sludge for their use in agriculture and land reclamation.

The studies aimed to evaluate the possibilities for agricultural management of sewage sludge from Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant in Sokolka. The content of macronutrients (N, P, K, Mg, Ca) and heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni, Pb, Hg) as well as disease-forming microorganisms (Salmonella rods, Toxocara spp., Ascaris sp.) were determined. It was found out that the studied sludge was characterized with high fertilization value comparable with manure. Sludge included slight amounts of heavy metal ions, and they were very rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium and magnesium. No disease-forming microorganisms were detected in the sludge. Sludge from Sewage Treatment Plant in Sokolka may be an alternative source of organic matter and some nutrients, as well as perfect substrate for soil humus formation.

Opis:
Sewage sludge management is becoming an increasing problem in developed and developing countries. Due to their physicochemical properties (mainly high content of heavy metals) a safe method of utilization is sought. Considering environmental protection, energy recycling, reduction in use of the raw materials and the possibility of immobilization hazardous substances, the use of ashes in building materials becomes a very good way of utilization. Both unprocessed sewage sludge and ashes after their thermal utilization can be used in the construction industry. Before using sediments and ashes, it is necessary to analyze the content of heavy metals, because they can have a negative effect, for example, on cement-stabilized products. The purpose of this work was to determine selected metals (Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Cr, Mg, Mn, Fe) in the primary, dehydrated, digested, excess sludge and ash after his incineration to check and compare heavy metal content. The obtained data can be used to optimize the production process of cement products that contain sewage sludge at differ form, and confirm the environmental safety of proposed approaches.

Opis:
Dlatego w najbliższym czasie wiele oczyszczalni zmuszonych będzie do wyboru odpowiedniej opcji unieszkodliwiania i zagospodarowania osadów.
This paper presents the results of experiments using low-cost municipal sewage treatment methods in wastewater treatment plants located in north-eastern Poland. The results of research and analysis of composts produced in wastewater treatment plants in Nowa Wieś Ełcka, Sokołka and Zambrow. Every of these WWTP uses a different method of wastewater treatment sludge and compost production. There composts produced were tested on selected fertilizer and the microbiological and parasitological micro- and macro-elements. Composts produced in the plant were characterized by a high content of organic mass and major nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) for plants. At the same time the concentration of heavy metals the general form fluctuated in the lower limit of acceptable values for the sewage sludge used in agriculture.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the influence of the percentage of sewage sludge and organic fraction in biomass subjected to composting for the content of selected heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Ni and Pb). Samples of compost produced in a laboratory scale static bioreactor with capacity of 60 liters, with forced aeration. Input to the bioreactor was mixture consisting of sewage sludge collected from sewage treatment plant in the catchment area of the city with 100 thousands inhabitants and organic fraction of municipal waste from landfill. Sewage sludge collected for composting after the dewatering devices contained 70÷75% of water. The organic waste fraction obtained by sieving non-sorted waste through a sieve with mesh diameter of 4 cm, and then through a sieve with a diameter of 2 cm. Unfortunately the resulting faction, apart from biodegradable waste, contained glass and plastic, which served as the structure creating material, however, negatively affected the quality of the compost. Water content in organic fraction of waste is around 50%. Studies have shown that the concentration of the metals studied depends on the initial content of the material intended for composting. The lead content in the compost depends mainly on the amount of organic fraction of municipal solid waste, and the concentration of Cr and Ni on the percentage of sewage sludge composed biomass.
