Opis:
In this study we modelled sea temperature (T ), salinity (S) and density field dynamics using a 3D numerical model applied to Rijeka Bay (Croatia) in order to explore their effect on effluent plume dynamics in the vicinity of four submarine sewage outfalls when the bora wind (NE direction) is blowing. The vertical density stratification in the area studied is strongly related to the bora wind, which contributes significantly to the lowering of the pycnocline depth through enhanced mixing in the vertical, giving rise to changes in the neutral buoyancy level. The features of near-field plume dynamics were calculated with the use of a separate near-field numerical model, using information on the vertical density distribution previously calculated using a 3D numerical model. The results of the numerical simulations and statistical analysis of the wind data indicate a very low probability of complete water column homogenization and consequent effluent plume rise to the sea surface under the influence of the bora wind during the peak tourist season (May–September).

Opis:
To examine the distribution of Trichodesmium relative to physicochemical factors during summer in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) Estuary and adjacent East China Sea shelf, three cruises were conducted separately in June 2009, July 2011, and August 2009. Trichodesmium species found were T. thiebautii, T. erythraeum, and T. hildebrandtii. The population was dominated by T. thiebautii, which accounted for >85% of the samples found. Most of them were free trichomes. Colonial forms were rarely observed (approximately 10% of our samples), occurring only in offshore waters. The depth integrated abundances of Trichodesmium were 308 × 103, 1709 × 103, and 3448 × 103 trichomes m−2 in June, July, and August, respectively. Trichodesmium was distributed abundantly in the southern or southeastern part of our study area, where nutrients were low and light penetration, temperature, and salinity were high, which were influenced by the Taiwan Warm Current (TWC) and Kuroshio. Trichodesmium was found in low abundance in inshore, eutrophic, low-salinity waters, which were mainly controlled by the Changjiang Diluted Water (CDW) and coastal current. These results suggest that spatiotemporal changes in the summer Trichodesmium distribution correlate highly with the variations in physicochemical properties that are primarily controlled by the TWC, Kuroshio, and CDW. The summer N2 fixation rate of Trichodesmium was estimated at 12.3 μmol N m−2 d−1 in our study area, contributing >50% of biological N2 fixation.

The first part of the Baltic Sea ecohydrodynamic model, based on the Princeton Ocean Model (POM), was validated by long-term observations of sea level, salinity and water temperature fluctuations. The modelled sea surface temperature (SST) fields were also compared to satellite images – satisfactory correlation coefficients were obtained. The model bias and efficiency coefficients of the modelled variables in relation to the observed values were determined. The quality of model simulations in relation to measured values was estimated with respect to spatial and seasonal variability in shallow and deep coastal waters as well as in the open sea. The results indicated the high quality of simulations by the hydrodynamic model.

Opis:
Hypothetical cases of oil spills, caused by ship failure in the northern Adriatic, are analysed with the aim of producing three-dimensional models of sea circulation and oil contaminant transport. Sea surface elevations, sea temperature and salinity fields are applied as a forcing argument on the model’s open boundaries. The Aladin-HR model with a spatial resolution of 8 km and a time interval of 3 hours is used for atmospheric forcing. River discharges along the coastline in question are introduced as point source terms and are assumed to have zero salinity at their respective locations. The results of the numerical modelling of physical oceanography parameters are validated by measurements carried out in the ‘Adriatic Sea monitoring programme’ in a series of current meter and CTD stations in the period from 1 January 2008 to 15 November 2008. The oil spill model uses the current field obtained from a circulation model. Besides the convective dispersive transport of oil pollution (Lagrangian model of discrete particles), the model takes into account a number of reactive processes such as emulsification, dissolution, evaporation and heat balance between the oil, sea and atmosphere. An actual event took place on 6 February 2008, when the ship ‘Und Adriyatik’ caught fire in the vicinity of the town of Rovinj (Croatia) en route from Istanbul (Turkey) to Trieste (Italy). At the time the fire broke out, the ship was carrying around 800 tons of oil. Thanks to the rapid intervention of the fire department, the fire was extinguished during the following 12 hours, preventing possible catastrophic environmental consequences. Based on this occurrence, five hypothetical scenarios of ship failure with a consequent spill of 800 tons of oil over 12 hours were analysed. The main distinction between the simulated scenarios is the time of the start of the oil spill, corresponding to the times when stronger winds were blowing (>7 m s−1) with a minimum duration of 24 h within the timeframe. Each scenario includes a simulation of oil transport for a period of two months after the beginning of the oil spill. The results show that the coastal belt between the towns of Poreˇc and Rovinj is seriously exposed to an oil pollution load, especially a few days after a strong and persistent bora (NE wind).

Under warming climates, heat waves (HWs) have occurred in increasing intensity in Europe. Also, public interest towards HWs has considerably increased over the last decades. The paper discusses the manifestations of the summer 2014 HW and simultaneously occurring coastal upwelling (CU) events in the Gulf of Finland. Caused by an anticyclonic weather pattern and persisting easterly winds, CUs evolved along the southern coast of the Gulf in four episodes from June to August. Based on data from coastal weather stations, 115 days-long measurements with a Recording Doppler Current Profiler (RDCP) oceanographic complex and sea surface temperature (SST) satellite images, the partly opposing impacts of these events are analysed. Occurring on the background of a marine HW (up to 26°C), the CU-forced SST variations reached about 20 degrees. At the 10 m deep RDCP mooring location, a drop from 21.5 to 2.9°C occurred within 60 hours. Salinity varied between 3.6 and 6.2 and an alongshore coastal jet was observed; the statistically preferred westerly current frequently flowed against the wind. Locally, the cooling effect of the CUs occasionally mitigated the overheating effects by the HWs both in the sea and on the marine-land boundary. However, in the elongated channel-like Gulf of Finland, upwelling at one coast is usually paired with downwelling at the opposite coast, and simultaneously or subsequently occurring HWs and CUs effectively contribute to heat transfer from the atmosphere to the water mass. Rising extremes of HWs and rapid variations by CUs may put the ecosystems under increasing stress.

The conductivity-salinity conversion algorithm used for oceanographic measurements of Practical Salinity on the PSS-78 scale is designed for IAPSO Standard Seawater. The application of this formula to a given sample of non-standard seawater does not necessarily result in a constant salinity value when the sample’s conductivity is measured at different temperatures. We have experimentally studied the magnitude of this non-conservative effect of Practical Salinity using a sample of Baltic seawater possessing a density anomaly of about 50 g m−3. The apparent change of salinity observed is at the limit of experimental uncertainty and is not significantly different from the drift of Standard Seawater, which was measured for comparison.

Changes in the basic physical properties of selected areas of the Baltic Proper were analysed on the basis of the results of a 12-year series of high-resolution measurements collected during cruises of r/v ‘Oceania’. The high-resolution CTD sections covered three main basins: the Bornholm Basin, Słupsk Furrow and Gdańsk Basin. Positive temperature trends of 0.11 and 0.16◦C year−1 were observed in the surface and deep layers respectively. The salinity trend was also positive. The rise in the air temperature has probably caused the increase in surface water temperature, while advection has been of greater significance in the deep layer. The increase in salinity coincides with the more frequent occurrence of small and medium-size inflows through the Danish Straits, even though large inflows are evidently less frequent than used to be the case. The seasonal variability of temperature in the water column was analysed. The phase shift in the seasonal evolution with depth is described. The maximum temperature shift in the waters investigated varies from 32 to 38 days.

Opis:
A medium-sized inflow (about 200 km3 according to IOW data, – personal communication) of saline water into the southern Baltic Sea occurred during January 2003. Unlike any previously observed inflow, this one brought very cold water, of temperatures around 1–2◦C and less. Since the temperature of the deep water in the southern Baltic before the inflow was exceptionally high (11–12◦C), the inflowing waters produced dramatic changes and a steep temperature gradient. The movement of the inflowing waters through the deep basins and channels of the Baltic Sea from the Arkona Basin to the Gdańsk Deep during next 4–8 months is described. Frequent mesoscale structures and intensive mixing followed the eastward transport of the inflow water, particularly in the Bornholm Deep and Słupsk Furrow. The present paper is based on data collected during of 6 cruises r/v ‘Oceania’ between December 2002 and August 2003. The last cruise in August took place in order to assess the long-term consequences of the inflow.

The concentration of chlorophylls and carotenoids with respect to communities of characteristic phytoplankton species and hydrological parameters, such as temperature, salinity and nutrients were analysed. Samples from the southern Baltic were taken during three periods: spring 1999, autumn 1999 and 2000 during cruises of r/v ‘Oceania’ in this area. The seasonal differences between the phytoplankton species composition and pigmentation of samples (measured by HPLC) were noted. The total biomass of the spring phytoplankton population was 11–15 times greater than that of the autumn populations. However, the phytoplankton community was more diverse in the two autumns, whereas the spring population was almost mono-taxonomic: >80% of the total biomass consisted of dinophytes. The total content of chlorophylls (a, b, c1 + c2) was about 20 times higher in spring. Moreover, in spring the concentrations of photosynthetic carotenoids (with dominant perdinin) were 2–4 times higher than those of the photoprotecting carotenoids (with dominant diadinoxanthin), whereas in the two autumns the situation was reversed: PPC concentrations (with dominant zeaxanthin and diadinoxanthin) exceeded those of PSC (with dominant fucoxanthin) by c. 3–10 times. Pigment markers have proved to be extremely useful biomarkers for elucidating the composition of phytoplankton populations in natural samples.

Acoustic measurements were conducted at different seasons in the last five years at a fixed point of the Baltic Sea at a frequency 30 kHzcon currently with temperature and salinity sampling. Echosounding records were used to determine the seasonal and diurnal migration patterns of scattering layers in accordance with thermohaline conditions. Different seasonal patterns of nocturnal aggregations of organisms dependent on the temperature gradient in the thermocline were found. This paper illustrates the diurnal distributions of sound scattering layers and analyses the way they are linked to the physical structure of the water.

In the Baltic Proper, the mean circulation is too weak to explain the fast southward spreading of the so-called juvenile freshwater trapped by the seasonal thermocline in the summer season. Improved knowledge of the spatial and temporal scales of the velocity field is needed to better model dispersion. Spatial and temporal scales are investigated using some large historic data sets. Inertial oscillations are almost always present in the Baltic Proper, irrespective of wind conditions and mixed layer thicknesses. Analyses of the coherence in one data set reveal that the inertial oscillations have a horizontal coherence scale of 10–20 km under the conditions experienced during those measurements. Transient eddies and basin-scale modes with weaker periodicity are also indicated in our data sets. A tentative wavenumber spectrum is constructed for the Baltic Proper.

Opis:
Available CTD profiles from the Gulf of Riga (May—August, 1993—2012) were analyzed to study inter-annual and long-term changes in temperature, salinity and density in relation to river runoff and atmospheric forcing (e.g. Baltic Sea Index). To describe temporal changes in vertical stratification, the upper mixed layer (UML) and deep layer (DL) parameters were estimated. On average the UML depth increases from 8.7 m in May to 9.0, 11.5 and 13.7 m in June, July and August, respectively, and the UML temperature increases from 8.08C to 12.5, 18.7 and 18.68C (May, June, July and August) while the UML salinity increases from 4.90 g kg1 to 5.14, 5.28 and 5.38 g kg1, respectively. High correlation (r = 0.82) was found between the inter-annual changes in river runoff (spring) and mean salinity in the UML in August as well as between DL mean salinity (r = 0.88) and density (r = 0.84) in the Irbe Strait and DL mean salinity and density in the Gulf of Riga. Inter-annual changes in the UML depth as well as in DL salinity and density had a significant correlation with the changes in Baltic Sea Index. The strongest stratification (August) can be observed in the years with the highest UML temperature and the highest river run-off in spring. We suggest that the predicted increase in water temperature and changes in river run-off due to the climate change would result in faster development of the seasonal thermocline in spring and stronger vertical stratification in summer.
