Opis:
Studied by many researchers, tourism has become a major income-generating sector of the economy. Tourism often creates potential and acts as an engine of local economic development for many rural areas however, it is not established in all areas. The utilization of tourism potential in rural areas is sometimes considered to be the “only and last resort” to generating economic growth, even though it is frequently not enough to solve long-lasting and serious problems existing in such areas. Thus, when developing the sector, it is necessary to examine the conditions of a given area. The aim of this study is to discover the touristic possibilities of rural areas and, with the application of certain indicators, quantify and define the long-term potentials of the sector.

Opis:
Since the half of the 1990's, the development of rural areas was directed into a multifunctional form. Apart from main agricultural functions, dominating in the central steering period, different forms of non-agriculture activity started to develop in rural areas. In new conceptions of rural areas development, of important meaning was tourism, including agrotourism. The main aim of this paper is an attempt to discuss the role of tourism in multi-functional development of rural areas, especially in the Świętokrzyskie voi-vodship. In the Świętokrzyskie voivodship, a considerable development of agrotourist farms, with that of cooperating institutions, like agrotourist associations, con-sultative teams and agrotourist chambers is recently observed. The agrotourism is very important function of this area. First agrotourist farms were organized in 1993. Most of them are small and are not profitable, thus most of their owners became part-time farmers. The income outside the agriculture can be for them just the agrotourism. At present the Świętokrzyskie voivodship is visited by many tourists from various part of Poland. Agrotourism is a real chance for the Świętokrzyskie voivodship farmers, to ameliorate their difficult economic situation.

The paper describes the evolution of rural tourism and agritourism in Poland and presents the terms which define tourism in rural areas. First, the terms used over three historical periods in Poland are discussed: interwar, socialist and post-socialist. In this part, the long tradition of recreation in the Polish countryside and how it developed differently from West European countries is presented. Following that, the concept of Polish agritourism exogeneity is explained, seen in the way it was introduced and popularised at the time of political and economic transformations. In contrast to the evolutionary process of agritourism development in West European countries, the revolutionary origins of agritourism in Poland were the foundation of a hierarchy of terms defining tourism as connected with the countryside and farming.

The article aims to present the essence of the development of tourism in the Republic of Moldova. It draws attention to the attractiveness of tourism in the context of the development of the region and the social-cultural values of the country’s rural areas. The article makes use of the database of the World Tourism Organisation, the National Bureau of Statistics of the Republic of Moldova and information collected during study visits to the staff of the Association of Tourism Development in Moldova (in Kishinev, the capital city of Moldova, in June and July 2016). Moldova is a small country with a lot of tourist attractions. There are over 15,000 anthropogenic attractions for tourists and over 300 nature areas. In 2014, 96,000 tourists visited Moldova (7.5% more than in the preceding year), generating $226 million in revenues. There were seven providers of tourist services in 2005, and there were already 26 in 2015. The author was a co-founder of four agritourism clusters in Moldova developed within an international project.

Opis:
In this work the identification of the process of changes in rural tourism has been presented. The evolution of rural tourism is defined by changes occurring in the countryside and in tourism itself. The presented analysis of the evolution of rural tourism is based on a change in the approach to the definition of rural tourism, to the supply and demand, and to the influence of rural tourism on rural environment. The analysis is restricted by the available literature of the subject and by statistical data for Poland. In the beginning the rural tourism was considered as the tourism occurring in the countryside. Afterwards, many aspects of rural tourism were recognized, which is reflected by its definitions. The evolution of tourism supply also took place and, as a result, the tourism supply became more diverse. Apart from traditional forms of vacational tourism, some new forms requiring a specifically designed landscape, equipment, cultural events, managment etc. appeared. New clients looking for specific experiences in rural tourism also appeared. For such clients the countryside became a tourism product. They are also able to provide a sufficient income for the sustainable development of the countryside. Providing tourism services by farms often leads to the collapse of their agricultural activity, and, in consequence, to the dominating role of tourists’ service, which leads to the multifunctionality of the countryside. Such a hypothesis requires further empirical investigations. The literature of the subject indicates that the model of tourist area lifecycle (TALC), as proposed by Butler in 1980, is useful for carrying out analyses of rural tourism evolution.

The population of the developed world is continuously ageing. The phenomenon is predicted to represent a major challenge for the European continent, but at the same time, it also means a huge business opportunity for the economy. Experts of the European Union are already working on targeted programmes that collect and analyse the results of respective researches in order to develop alternative solutions for the 50+ age group. This new “niche” market segment had already been named “silver economy”. As the group of senior citizens affect almost all segments of the economy, marketing experts have to plan ahead to be prepared for the upcoming new consumers’ demands and preferences. Elderly people generally like to participate in tourism, thus the industry needs to keep up with their changing demands. In Hungary, there has been a significant increase in domestic rural tourism, mainly thanks to new tourism attractions and cost-effective leisure services developed with the support of EU funds. However, the sustainability of rural lifestyle requires a stabile economic background and high quality management. As of today, rural tourism is on the rise in Hungary, and will hopefully remain a success story, based on the economic benefits of the new trends of senior tourism.

The paper presents the issue of the sustainable tourism which corresponds with the concept of the sustainable development. The work concentrates on the theoretical analysis of the sustainable tourism, often treated as a tool of accomplishment of the sustainable development or the tool of the development of tourism itself. The article is an attempt to state the basic rules of the sustainable tourism on the so-called rural health resort areas. The work shows what kind of tourism can be developed on the analysed rural areas, at the same time being in harmony with the concept of the sustainable tourism. In the paper the analysis of the national and foreign literature from the domain of the concept of the sustainable tourism, including rural areas, and the observation of the chosen indicators of the sustainable development of health resorts villages are presented. The concept of the sustainable development arose in the 1970s and it was an expression of the critical reaction to the growing interference in natural and social and cultural resources. The concept of the sustainable development is not opposite to the possibilities of economic growth, on condition that the pace of the reproduction of the environmental resources is not slower than the pace of the usage of these resources. The theoretical basis of the usage of the rules of the sustainable development in the world literature started to be seen at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s. The document „Agenda 21 for Travelling and Tourism Economy” turned out to be fundamental for the development of the concept of the sustainable tourism. The practical use of the concept of the sustainable development in the rural areas economy needs devising indicators and indexes characterizing this development. The indicators are divided into: indicators of environmental pressure (danger, stress), indicators of condition (quality) of the environment and indicators of preventive activities. The economic significance of the tourism lies in its positive influence on the different departments of the economy, including agriculture. One of the more important impacts is stopping the migration of people from the rural areas.

The survey which was supposed to provide information on popularity of rural holiday destinations among the academic youth has revealed that rural areas are most willingly visited by students who come from cities (49.3%). The locations most frequently chosen by the respondents included: the Baltic coast, Helski Peninsula, Kujawy and Kaszuby Region. It was also observed that male students are more willing than female students to spend holidays outside towns (54.6%). The recreational activities indicated by the respondents who chose to spend their free time in the village were mainly cycling and hiking (34.3% vs 28.4%). Another form of activity was sightseeing (32.3%), and kayaking (30.4%). People who declared to have spent their holiday time in the country were more often involved in sailing (mainly men - 66.6%) and rowing (mainly women - 54.5%) sunbathing and diving (7.8%) than those who chose to go to the city. Students are regarded to be an active and important group of tourists who tend to visit the village even two times a year and stay there for longer periods of time (even 8 – 14 days). It is likely that trips to regions characterized by peace, quietness and clean air will increase among the analyzed group of tourists.

The success of a rural tourism business largely depends on promotional activities. Having developed a tourist product, owners of rural tourism facilities should therefore inform the buyers about it. Usually, they rely on websites and social media for this purpose. However, for a website to fulfill its function, it should be of high quality. The improvement of website quality can be achieved through measures which include search engine optimization (SEO) and content and graphics optimization. The purpose of this paper is to assess the potential of image optimization on websites of Polish rural tourism facilities. The research covered 1000 paid domain websites. The largest part of the sites surveyed were rated good in terms of graphic file optimization. In spite of this, it was possible to reduce the size of graphic files covered by this study and used in the research model by as much as 67% without significantly deteriorating their quality. This research showed that image optimization has no direct impact on the outcome of an SEO audit, and that images can be optimized even for websites with high final scores.

Agrotourism plays a huge role in the activation of rural areas. Its position and market power affects a number of external components and mechanisms. And although its positive impact on the economic and social development rural areas is noticeable, it also reveals a number of barriers related. An important aspect is to strengthen awareness of local communities concerning benefits resulting from the development of this non-agricultural source of income. Only then it will trigger a multiplier effect that will eventually lead to reduction of unemployment, job creation in sectors serving tourists, revenue growth and will improve both living standard and working conditions of the population actively involved. Improving the visibility of rural values, processing, traditional crafts, rural buildings can become a powerful magnet for tourists, tourists looking for new unconventional forms of recreation. Benefits of the development of rural tourism can become real if there is visible involvement and close cooperation between both - service providers and local authorities (government).

The remaining part had a more positive attitude to this form of tourism – 3/4 of them were on a tourist farm, the others were planning the first trip of this type. As reasons for choosing this form of tourism was pointed chance to relax in peace and quiet, health-promoting natural values of rural areas, the desire to change the current method of relaxation and competitive price. While choosing a particular farm respondents took into account value for money and the convenience of driving directions. Information on farms searched on the internet and among friends. Tourists manifested great interest in active forms of leisure. A large part of them willingly met by rural cultural sphere. Recognizing behaviors, expectations and preferences of the main group of clients agritourism farms - city dwellers, should contribute to the improvement of the offer and dynamise development of this form of tourism.
