    Successful slogans in Italian political discourse – This paper aims to describe the notion of ‘sloganisation’, with special regard to the fortune and circulation of certain slogans in Italian public discourse. An analysis of their forms, contexts of occurrence (political propaganda, advertising, football supporters) and means of diffusion (street talk, electoral manifestos, traditional and new media) shows an increasing desemantisation of this kind of message. Slogans are routinely used by political parties and are widely quoted, regardless of their ideological content, merely in order to create identification or to increase the polemical attitude of their leader.

    This article analyses the way Ukrainian politicians express themselves, which is different from the general principles of rhetoric: comments often contain verbal aggression towards the opponent. By analyzing Ukrainian political discourse I managed to track the imprudence fond in the formulation of comments for different reasons – an inability to report or inability to control emotions, as well as a direct and deliberate strategy of applying all possible means of modeling verbal aggression, especially the use of invectives. The postulates of the author are confirmed by illustrative material – examples of statements made by Ukrainian politicians from different parties and groups, selected from the transcripts of the Supreme Council of Ukraine (Verkhovna Rada) from the year 2013.

    Celem artykułu jest pokazanie, jakie emocje, w jaki sposób i w jakim celu są wyrażane w ramach dyskursu politycznego, w szczególnym kontekście skandalu politycznego. W świetle wciąż następujących zmian w sposobie uprawiania polityki – związanych w znacznym stopniu z wpływem mediów masowych, Internetu – wyrażanie emocji i kierowanie nimi stanowią jedno z podstawowych narzędzi życia politycznego. Personalizacja polityki, jej mediatyzacja i sensacjonalizacja sprawiają, iż rola emocji w walce o poparcie i władzę jest równie istotna, jak kompetencji i merytorycznej wiedzy. Skandal natomiast jest momentem, w którym dochodzi do szczególnej koncentracji emocji, dzięki czemu ogniskuje on pewne mechanizmy walki o władzę przy użyciu takich uczuć, jak: emocjonalizacja przekazu jako narzędzie perswazji politycznej, emocje w odbiorze, jak i w kształtowaniu wizerunku. Rozważania te oparte są na przykładzie życia politycznego współczesnych Włoch i skandalu związanego z premierem Silvio Berlusconim, który stanowi doskonałą egzemplifikację tematyki emocji w życiu publicznym.
    The aim of this paper is to show which emotions, how, and to what end are expressed in political discourse, especially in the context of political scandal, in the framework of critical discourse analysis. The changing methods of political battle, related to the influence of mass media and the Internet, have increased the role of emotions as a means of politics. The personalization, mediatization, and sensationalism of political life have led to the recognition of the importance of emotion control and management. Political scandal, which involves extreme emotions and consequently highlights certain mechanisms of political struggle, seems exemplary as far as the study of emotions in politics is concerned. The analysis of emotionalization as a persuasive means, the role of emotions in the reception and interpretation of political messages, and emotions as key factors in creating a positive self-image are based on the example of Italian political scene and scandals surrounding Silvio Berlusconi.

    The modern political class, which has been established on democratic principles both in Europe and America, is keen to use rhetoric and tools it provides. Any attempt to dene the inuence of these tools principally refers to the essence of rhetoric which is persuasion. Persuasion, on the other hand, is core to political discourse which, according to Teun van Dijk (1997, p. 14) is contextual, therefore must be recognized by its functions and/or goals. The functions of the discourse are often expressed in rhetorical devices and therefore play an important role in achieving political goals. The pieces of information presented in this article depict rhetorical devices as useful in increasing persuasiveness. Attention is paid to gures of repetition which constitute a universal category of rhetorical devices and thus need to be examined in a greater detail, especially in a discourse whose users focus their eorts on constructing eective persuasion.

    Opis:
    The article discusses the use of qualitative research in the analysis of a political text – an electoral leaflet, which is one of the genres of electoral text in political discourse. The source material consisted of leaflets from the elections to the Parliament and from local elections that took place in Poland in the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. Qualitative research enables the analysis of the sender, the sender’s intention, the recipient, and the content of the text, including its informational and persuasive layers as well as the analysis of the rhetoric principles used in the text, the criteria of textuality, or the influence of the context. Qualitative research helps to better understand the factors that determine the intelligibility, unambiguity, informational fullness of the text and, hence, its effectiveness in political communication. The qualitative method makes it possible to study the content of the text, its functions, structure, and thus the quality of the volatile text and, more broadly, the quality of political discourse.
    W artykule podjęto temat wykorzystania badań jakościowych do analizy tekstu politycznego – ulotki wyborczej, która stanowi jeden z gatunków tekstu wyborczego w dyskursie politycznym. Materiał źródłowy stanowiły ulotki z wyborów do sejmu, senatu, wyborów samorządowych, które miały miejsce w Polsce w XX w. i na początku XXI w. Badania jakościowe umożliwiają analizę nadawcy, intencji nadawcy, analizę odbiorcy, treści tekstu – warstwy informacyjnej i perswazyjnej tekstu, użytych zasad retoryki, kryteriów tekstowości, wpływu kontekstu. Pozwalają lepiej poznać czynniki, które decydują o zrozumiałości, jednoznaczności, informacyjnej pełności tekstu i tym samym jego skuteczności w komunikacji politycznej. Metoda jakościowa umożliwia badanie zawartości tekstu, jego funkcji, struktury, a więc jakości tekstu ulotnego i szerzej, jakości dyskursu politycznego.

    The article concerns the matter connected with relations between political rhetoric and unethical manipulation leading to success in public sphere. The research tool are references to the tradition of classical ethics and to modern philosophers like Derrida and Hannah Arendt. The background of discussion is offensive nature of public discourse and decline of political tactics striving for the common good. I am also referring to the significance of lie in European culture from era of Homer to our times. In this context, the most difficult question to discuss is the exact definition of a political lie, because it is hard to refer a true/ false dichotomy regarding political worldviews. In conclusion I am presenting the research methodology that distinguishes manipulation from sound political action.

    -Discourse Theory is a heterogeneous ensemble of approaches, which have recently brought some refreshment in the social and political sciences. Although it offers a kind of social ontology based on post-structuralist approach towards language and discourse, it does not provide with a given methodology, ready to use in empirical research. Hitherto prevailing researches have rather looked for empirical exemplifications of the assumed theory, than made their referential strategy clear and convincing. Therefore, an effort of supplementing the theoretical and methodological matrix with some definite research techniques, seems substantial. A more empirically oriented discourse research approaches as Critical Discourse Analysis or even lexicometrical research can be here of a great value. Although a significant differences in ontological assumptions can be observed, a combined research strategies, enabling well proved empirical research appear not impossible to work out and successfully utilise.

    The aim of this analytic paper is to examine the dominant rhetorical devices in the American public speeches in the early 21st century that express and justify ideologies and state policies. This research has focused on oral productions embedded in institutional American discourse selected in relation to the top policies endorsed by prominent politicians and offi cials. Rhetorical techniques that are discussed are used to seek public approval and consent through the construction of American exceptionalism and uniqueness. The study reveals the dominant rhetorical schemas through analysis of speeches on such topics as Iraq, economic crisis, nuclear security, military interventionism and US global leadership.
    Celem artykułu jest przegląd i omówienie narzędzi retorycznych, które w amerykańskich przemówieniach politycznych z początku XXI wieku wykorzystywane są do wyrażania i uzasadniania ideologii i polityki państwa. Analiza dotyczy mówionych form dyskursu instytucjonalnego, wybranych wystąpień najważniejszych polityków i urzędników państwowych. Wyróżnione techniki retoryczne służą zdobyciu publicznej akceptacji poprzez odwołanie się do koncepcji amerykańskiej wyjątkowości. Przedmiotem analizy są retoryczne schematy używane w przemówieniach dotyczących takich tematów jak wojna w Iraku, kryzys ekonomiczny, bezpieczeństwo nuklearne, interwencje militarne i globalne przywództwo USA.
