Wind energy sector has been developing at a fast pace in many countries around the world in recent years. However, there is an issue with the unpredictability of electricity production provided by wind turbines that is caused by variability of weather. Therefore, there is need to compensate the intermittency of wind energy by means of backup power generation facilities. One of the solutions is compressed air energy storage technology (CAES). The paper discusses the CAES technology characteristics as well as economic aspects of CAES plant construction and operation. The latest achievements and developments in the field of CAES technology is presented. The paper inspects the existing CAES facilities and discusses the possibilities of implementing this technology in Poland.

Biogas plants are one of the most stable sources of renewable energy. Currently, there is a noticeable increase in the amount of post-production residues from agricultural production and agri-food processing (fruit and vegetable processing, fermentation, beet pulp, or lignocellulosic waste), which, can be used for biogas production after appropriate pretreatment. The aim of this study was to examine the possibility of using the biomass produced during the cultivation of grapes on a selected farm as a substrate for a biogas plant, taking into account the production process. The research was carried out in 2018-2020 in a vineyard located in the Sandomierz Upland in the south-eastern part of Poland. Own rooted vines were grown as a single continuous string with a trunk height of 40 cm and a length of one fixed arm approx. 0.9 m, on which six pivots were left every year after applying a short cut, from which 12-16 fruit shoots were derived, the so-called grapevines. Leaves were collected at random from three locations on the fruiting shoot, a total of 30 leaves in each replicate. Each sample consisted of 1/3 of the leaves collected at the bottom, 1/3 in the middle, and 1/3 at the top of the canopy. Leaf area was estimated with a model 3100 area meter on a sample of 30 leaves from each replicate. Both the quantity and quality of the obtained material as a substrate for methane fermentation were evaluated. Biogas yield tests in optimal conditions for mesophilic bacteria were conducted on three substrate samples referred to as ‘Regent’, ‘Seyval Blanc’, and ‘Solaris’. The yields of the tested material ranged from 51.0 to 59.0 Nm3 biogas per Mg of biomass.

Energy production from renewable sources is one of the main ways to fight against global warming. Anaerobic digestion process can be used to produce biogas containing methane. In the light of the growing demand for substrates, a variety of raw materials are required. These substrates should be suitable for anaerobic digestion, and processing them need to provide the desired amount of energy. This paper aims to discuss the agricultural biogas market in Poland, its current state, and the possibility of development during energy transformation, in particular in terms of using waste as a substrate for energy production. In February 2022, there were 130 agricultural biogas plants registered in Poland. On the other hand, in 2020, 4,409,054.898 Mg of raw materials were used to produce agricultural biogas in Poland. Among all the substrates used, waste played a special role. With the right amount of raw materials and proper management of a biogas plant, it is possible to produce electricity and provide stable and predictable heat supply. Bearing in mind the development of the Polish and European biogas markets, attention should be paid to ensure access to raw materials from which chemical energy in the form of biogas can be generated. Due to limited access to farmland and the increasing demand for food production, one should expect that waste will be increasingly often used for biogas production, especially that with high energy potential, such as waste related to animal production and the meat industry.

The giant grasses, some speeies in Triarrhena and Miscanthus, have high potential of biomass productivity and cou'd be used as a source of renewab'e raw materia' and energy. China is one of the most important distribution areas of these plants. An overall investigation on the high potential speeies and their geographical distribution in China is undertaken and the resultsare presented. T.lutarioriparia, ever named Miscanthus saccharif/orus, is an endemie speeies in China. It can grow to 6-7 m high and is being used as an important paper-making materia!. This speeies distributes in China in warm temperate regions from 28°36’ North latitude to 34°49’ North latitude; and from 110°41’ East longitude to 121°29’ East longitude. A cultivation trial shows that this speeies can grow over 3.5 m and over-winter safely in Braunschweig, Germany. The product quality, botanical and agronomie properties of this speeies are somewhat different to another hybrid speeies, Miscanthus × giganteus, the well-known speeies being cultivated and investigated in Europe. It is very interesting to integrate the newly introduced plant, T. lutarioriparia into the start materiais of Miscanthus breeding work. There are more information about other related plants given in this paper.

The potential of organic wastes in Ukraine for biogas production and the prospects of using the family-type biogas plants for this purpose are shown. In the biogas laboratory of the Ukrainian National Forestry University the efficiency of the anaerobic mesophilic digestion of chicken manure of Poltava poultry farm, Kamianets-Podilsky poultry farm and sewage sludge from Lviv wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) was investigated. Different integral indicators of the biogas production and significantly different dynamics of its formation over time were obtained for three investigated substrates. The value of average specific biogas production from the sewage sludge of Lviv WWTP is 0.494 dm3∙(day∙kg FM)–1, which is 5.1 times more comparing the chicken manure of Kamianets-Podilsky poultry farm and 8.0 times more than for the chicken manure of Poltava poultry farm. Strong negative effect of antibiotic treatment of chickens on methane content in the obtained biogas was established experimentally.

The study evaluated physicochemical properties of bio-waste as a potential biofuel in the form of leaves from ‘Regent’ grapevines grown on six different rootstocks and a control grown on its own roots for three years of cultivation. An elemental analysis was carried out, determining the content of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and sulphur in the leaves tested. A technical analysis of the biofuel was also carried out to determine the content of moisture, volatile matter, and ash. The calorimetric method was used to determine the higher heating value for the material. Fixed carbon and oxygen carbon was calculated based on the elemental and technical analyses. The study showed that the type of rootstock and the year of cultivation influence the amount of leaves obtained from the cultivation area. Leaf entrustment per hectare ranged from 1,140,868.02 in rootstock 161-49 to 1,265,286.7 Mg∙ha-1 in rootstock SO4. Regardless of the year of the study, shrubs grafted on 125AA rootstock and the control had the highest combustion heat of 17.5 MJ∙kg-1 and 17.6 MJ∙kg-1 respectively, while 5BB rootstock had the lowest combustion heat (16.4 MJ∙kg-1). Statistical analysis showed no significant effect of test year on the elemental and technical parameters evaluated. It was observed that regardless of the evaluated parameter and the type of rootstock in most parameters, the values in 2022 were the highest, while in 2021 they were the lowest.

There’s a strong link between the production of biofuels and energy crops. The first of these activities may contribute to the appearance of new products in agriculture, besides giving a boost to activities such as provision of services and aiding in the diversification of economic activities in rural areas. Farmers’ final decision to include energy crops into or exclude them from their productive alternatives depends on various factors of a different nature (political, legal, technical, economic or socio-cultural). This paper analyzes the socio-economic aspects related to the introduction of oil-seeds (sunflower and rape seed) as energy crops in one of the most important agricultural regions in Spain (Castile and Leon). Thus, using RRA (Rural Rapid Appraisal) and the Economic Accounts for Agriculture (EAA), the study provides an evaluation of the main economic accounts of these crops and an idea of their profitability, impact on the level of employment and environmental consequences.

Opis:
The sewage treatment plant, as a producer of renewable energy, should make every effort to ensure that the biogas used as a fuel meets the quality requirements, including those of the manufacturers of cogeneration units. Such measures necessitate the application of a conditioning process of biogas in order to remove harmful compounds, so that its parameters ensure failure-free operation of engines. The aim of the research was to evaluate the effectiveness of biogas treatment in the A-type installation using the “wet biogas treatment” technology, and in the B-type installation, which is a comprehensive solution comprising sulfur removal as a result of a simultaneous regeneration of the bed with oxygen, removal of siloxanes on activated carbon, cooling and heating of biogas along with its filtration. The analysis of the results of biogas testing for these two installations demonstrated fundamental qualitative differences for the benefit of the installation B, in which the biogas was characterized by a much lower content, mainly of sulfur, hydrogen sulfide, siloxanes and humidity. The introduced pollution indicator of a megawatt hour produced in cogeneration one has confirmed much higher pollution load from the A-type installation. The hybrid solution applied in the work with simultaneous regeneration of the bed has confirmed the efficiency of biogas conditioning. Such a solution contributes to a safe and reliable operation of the cogeneration system for generating energy from a renewable source, which in turn contributes to the optimization of energy.

Due to the ending resources of fossil fuels, as well as instability of the political situation on the world, especially in countries that are their main supplier, governments of poor countries in resources are forced to seek alternative sources of energy. Currently the most commonly used raw material to produce an electrical and thermal power in Poland are coal and lignite, However, in a result of an increase of their prices and an exacerbated by the EU of regulations about an emission of the greenhouse gas, emerged trends, that aim to transform the energy sector through the implementation of technologies based on alternative energy sources. The main focus is to put on renewable energy sources. The methodology, which is contained in this paper, presents a way to designation the demand of the biogas plant with CHP system on substrate of agricultural origin, the aim to obtain required electrical and thermal power. Moreover, the paper presents a simplified diagram of anaerobic fermentation, which is the basis of biogas production, as well as an illustrative diagram of a biogas plant with CHP system. In this paper also was mentioned the possibility of application biogas for transportation purposes.

Poland’s accession to the EU has caused a necessity of harmonising Polish with the union law also in the field of energy law. It also enforces achievement of 7,5% share of energy from alternative sources in the total energy consumption in 2010. Execution of this international commitment will require more economic and legal support from the state. The development of alternative sources of energy creates chances of development of rural areas where these kinds of installations are being mostly located. This article presents an analysis of the economic efficiency of energy production on an example of 5 small hydroelectric power stations. The analysis is based on a comparison of full unit costs and unit revenue from energy sale. Bigger stations proved economically efficient while for the smaller the break even point is associated with an average water flow of 153 million m3/year.

This paper presents the economic and ecological effect of Kostkowice Agricultural biogas plant based on a four year study carried out on the prototype installation. Agricultural biogas plant is part of the nature of the research conducted for twenty years at the National Research Institute of Animal PIB Experimental Station. Prof. Mieczyslaw Czaja relates to various aspects of environmental protection. It describes the economic justification for the production of energy from waste biomass (manure, slurry, wastes from feeding table), by the characteristics of substrates and products. It was found that agricultural biogas plant in rural areas are an important link in energy security, mainly due to the very high availability. Ecological effect is presented as effect of the installation solutions for the reduction of pollution of water, soil and air. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions through the recycling of environmentally harmful by-products of animal production of electricity and thermal energy, which is a substitute for environmentally harmful fossil fuels. The advantage of substances digestate is odorless, which is important both in an effort to improve the work culture in agriculture and improving living conditions in rural communities and it is an indisputable argument for the use of biomass for energy purposes.

Depletion of conventional fuels and the requirements of the European Union energy policy make the Polish power industry must use more and more renewable energy. The current Directive 2009/28/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 23 April 2009 on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources and amending and subsequently repealing Directives 2001/77/EC and 2003/30/EC (Text with EEA relevance), recommend establishing mandatory national targets, according to which the in 2020. 20% of energy will come from renewable sources in the Community. This is primarily acquired energy from biomass. The professional power plants can be used in co-firing biomass direct, indirect and parallel. For co-firing of biomass can be used pulverized or fluidized boilers. However, as in the case of each fuel, biomass burning causes pollution and waste generation. Currently in the power industry there are produced only two types of co-incineration of waste: fly ash from peat and untreated wood (10 01 03), bottom ash and fly ash from co-incineration other than those mentioned in 10 01 16 (10 01 17). Wastes from the combustion of biomass, particularly in the form of fly ash can be used in many industries. Using fly ash from biomass in the industry, as in the case of all energetic wastes, may pose a problem related to their variable properties, depending mainly on the type of biomass, as well as in the case of the primary fuel and the type of cofiring boiler. Fly ash from the combustion of biomass is mainly spherical glassy particles of different dimensions, and their basic chemical components are SiO2, CaO and K2O. These ashes contain less vitreous phase consisting mainly of SiO2 and Al2O3. The article presents the amount of biomass used in the power industry. Consumption of biomass growing in both the heat and power plants using coal and lignite in 2012, the power plants and biomass power plants, biomass consumption was – 10 748 339 GJ. Also shows the emissions from the combustion of biomass in the power industry, number and a brief description of the waste generated from the combustion of biomass. The main directions of using the wastes from the biomass combustion biomass are being presented – the building materials industry, agriculture, waste water treatment.
