- The study presents the analysis of the possibility of increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods through the development of intermodal transport. The inspiration for discussion were the records of the transport White Paper of 2011, in which it was assumed that by 2030, 30 % of freight carried by road at a distance of over 300 km, will be transferred to the more environmentally friendly modes of transport, especially rail, inland waterways and maritime transport. The paper presents basic data on rail freight in Poland. Particular attention was paid to data on intermodal transport. It presents the basic advantages and disadvantages of rail transport. The main aim of this article was to show that there are possibilities of increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods. For this purpose, an efficient modernization of railway lines and terminals, among other things, must be ensured in order to reduce transport time and handling. It should put systems in place to monitor traffic and track shipments in real time. Increasing the share of rail transport in the carriage of goods would be aimed primarily at relieving road transport, whose negative consequences for the environment and for human life and health are much higher than rail transport.
