Quality of service (QoS) is an important attribute for selecting a service during the service composition process. Although availability and reliability have been considered as the predominant factors for estimating reputation, two aspects are missing in the literature. First, their use is limited to composite service level and does not count on the atomic level. Second, their combined effect is not evaluated. Better estimation of QoS can be done with both factors considered together, whereas when taken separately for computing reputation, availability will give the probability of a service being up/running and reliability will analyze the change in failure trend of that service. In this research, a mathematical modeling of predominant QoS factors, availability and reliability of atomic services using Markov Chain model and Weibull analysis respectively, are suggested. Also importance of modeling reputation as an aggregation of availability and reliability has been explained. This research concludes two results. First, counting on probability of a service being up/running and its failure trend, together, results in a better estimation of its behavior and helps selecting the most appropriate one. Second, this resulted in selection of a service with higher reputation but lower usage cost, as opposed to using a single factor that resulted in higher reputation with higher cost.

This paper shortly describes the IP QoS System which offers strict quality of service (QoS) guarantees in IP-based networks and supports a number of, so called, classes of services. Such solution requires to implement in the network a set of QoS mechanisms and algorithm working on packet, connection request and provisioning levels. Furthermore, we require signaling system for informing the network about new connection request and network resource allocation capabilities for providing required resources to given connection. The IP QoS System is based on the next generation networks (NGN) and differentiated services (DiffServ) architectures and, at least for now, it is designed for single domain only.

Opis:
Traditional data storage systems provide access to user’s data on the "best effort" basis. While this paradigm is sufficient in many use cases it becomes an obstacle for applications with Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. Service Level Agreement (SLA) is a part of the contract agreed between the service provider and the client and contains a set of well defined QoS requirements regarding the provided service and the penalties applied in case of violations. In the paper we propose a set of SLA parameters and QoS metrics relevant to data storage processes and the management methods necessary for avoiding SLA violations. A key assumption in the proposed approach is that the underlying distributed storage system does not provide functionality for resource or bandwidth reservation for a given client request.

Priorytetem działalności placówek służby zdrowia jest wysoka jakość świadczonych usług. Celem badania była ocena usług zdrowotnych świadczonych w sanatoriach, zatem w artykule przedstawiono cechy usług zdrowotnych, ideę świadczonych usług zdrowotnych w sanatoriach oraz wyniki badań dotyczące oceny jakości świadczonych usług w sanatoriach. Metodą badawczą był sondaż diagnostyczny przeprowadzony za pomocą kwestionariusza ankiety, który utworzono na podstawie analizy narzędzi do oceny jakości usług oferowanych w publicznych i niepublicznych zakładach opieki zdrowotnej. W celu zgromadzenia informacji pozwalających na dokonanie oceny jakości świadczonych usług w sanatoriach skorzystano z dwóch kwestionariuszy ankiety. Jeden z nich skierowano do kuracjuszy, którzy przebywali w sanatorium na turnusach leczniczych, drugi do mieszkańców miasta korzystających z zabiegów leczniczych w obiekcie sanatorium. W analizie uwzględniono 280 poprawnie wypełnionych kwestionariuszy ankiety przez kuracjuszy oraz 72 kwestionariusze ankiety poprawnie wypełnione przez mieszkańców miasta. Uzyskane informacje pozwoliły na ocenę warunków bytowych, ocenę personelu, oczekiwań klientów dotyczących usług zdrowotnych i usług uzupełniających pobyt w sanatorium. Opinie uzyskano z trzech sanatoriów zlokalizowanych w Inowrocławiu. Na podstawie przeprowadzonego badania stwierdzono, że jakość usług świadczonych w sanatoriach jest w opiniach kuracjuszy na zadowalającym poziomie. Respondenci wysoko ocenili warunki bytowe oraz pracę personelu technicznego i medycznego. Nieliczna grupa respondentów mniej usatysfakcjonowana jest ważnym sygnałem dla kierownictwa placówek skłaniającym do podjęcia działań związanych z podwyższeniem jakości świadczonych usług pozwalających na uzyskiwanie wyższych ocen w przyszłości.
High quality of services rendered is a priority of health care entities. The purpose of the research was to evaluate health services produced in sanatoriums, thus, the issues discussed in this paper included characteristics of health services; concepts of health services produced in sanatoriums; as well as the results of research concerned with quality of care in sanatoriums. The method used for data collection was questionnaire survey which was built with tools allowing to evaluate quality of services in public and private health care entities. For the purpose of collecting data necessary to evaluate quality of services produced, two questionnaires were used. One of them was addressed to patients who stood in the sanatoriums, while the other was addressed to residents of town where sanatorium was located and who used sanatorium services. 280 questionnaires properly filled by sanatorium patients and 72 questionnaires properly filled by town residents using sanatorium services were included in the analysis. The data collected allowed for evaluation of living conditions, opinions about personnel, clients' expectations related to health services and supplementary services during stay in sanatorium. The data was collected in three sanatori-ums in Inowrocław. Based on the survey conducted it was concluded that the sanatorium patients perceived quality of services as satisfactory. Respondents gave high rates for living conditions as well as medical and technical personnel's work. A small group of respondents that were less satisfied with services is an important sign for management of the entities that should encourage them to take actions toward increasing quality of services allowing to obtain higher rates in the future.

In the recent ten years, with the development of new applications through Internet such as multimedia or networked control applications, users need more and more quality of service (QoS). However, the requested QoS is not the same depending on the application. Most of the new models to manage internet traffic are based on specific QoS criteria which should be optimized. This paper presents main multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) approaches such as MPLS adaptive traffic engineering (MATE), load distribution in MPLS (LDM) and load balancing over widest disjoints paths (LBWDP) that are new models for traffic engineering. It also introduces periodic multi-step (PEMS) algorithm that adapts the offered quality depending on the class of the routed traffic.

There is high demand for storage related services supporting scientists in their research activities. Those services are expected to provide not only capacity but also features allowing for more exible and cost ecient usage. Such features include easy multiplatform data access, long term data retention, support for performance and cost dierentiating of SLA restricted data access. The paper presents a policy-based SLA storage management model for distributed data storage services. The model allows for automated management of distributed data aimed at QoS provisioning with no strict resource reservation. The problem of providing users with the required QoS requirements is complex, and therefore the model implements heuristic approach for solving it. The corresponding system architecture, metrics and methods for SLA focused storage management are developed and tested in a real, nationwide environment. Due to the process of network convergence, the variety of types of traffic transmitted over a single medium increases steeply. This phenomenon can be handled by the existing networking structure although the protocols that are used and, especially, the underlying routing protocols need to be improved. The problem of finding the shortest path on the Internet can no longer be easily defined as there is an increasing number of different characteristics to describe a point-to-point link. The definition of the shortest path may differ for different traffic types. Therefore, in the mathematical models used to solve the modern routing problems multiple criteria must be taken into account. One of the interesting classes of the optimization problem is the problem of finding the solution that is minimized against one of the criteria under certain constraints with regard to the others. In this paper, two algorithms solving this kind of problems are presented and compared with a new solution proposed by the authors.

Telecommunication networks are ever more frequently relying on artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques to detect specific use patterns or potential errors and to take automated decisions when these are encountered. This concept requires that methods be employed to measure the level of quality of a given telecommunication service, i.e. to verify quality of service (QoS) metrics. In a broader context, methods assessing the entire user experience (quality of experience – QoE) are required as well. In this article, various approaches to assessing QoS, QoE and the related metrics are presented, with a view to implement these at an FTTH network operator in Poland. Since this article presents the architecture of the system used to analyze QoE performance based on a number of QoS metrics collected by the operator, we also provide a comprehensive introduction to the QoS and QoE metrics used herein.

This paper describes the problems associated with the provision of quality of service over an access connection to the Internet, i.e. the Internet Access Service (IAS). The paper has something of an overview character. Following a comprehensive introduction to the subject of “Changing Network Technologies” the paper focuses on the topic “Quality of IAS” in the light of regulatory directives of the European Parliament and the latest recommendations of ITU-T and ETSI. The focus will then shift to “Measurement Points and Measurement Scenarios for Determining QoS”. This topic will be described in detail and illustrated with several graphics. The final chapter has a pronounced scientific character and contains, among other things, a suggestion for a so-called Measurement Management System (MMS) to aid the design, execution and evaluation of efficient, automatic QoS measurements in networks.

The multicast quality of service-enabled routing is a computationally challenging task. Despite ongoing research efforts, the associated mathematical problems are still considered to be NP-hard. In certain applications, computational complexity of finding the optimal connection between a set of network devices may be a particularly difficult challenge. For example, connecting a small group of participants of a teleconference is not much more complex than setting up a set of mutual point-to-point connections. On the other hand, satisfying the demand for such services as IPTV, with their receivers constituting the majority of the network, requires applying appropriate optimization methods in order to ensure real system execution. In this paper, algorithms solving this class of problems are considered. The notion of multicast saturation is introduced to measure the amount of multicast participants relative to the entire network, and the efficiency of the analyzed algorithms is evaluated for different saturation degrees.

W artykule przedstawiono istotę usług oraz zagadnienie oceny jakości usług. Zaprezentowano metodę oceny jakości usług Servqual oraz wskazano na możliwość wykorzystania jej do określenia mocnych i słabych stron świadczonych usług. Wyniki oceny jakości usług metodą Servqual powinny wzbogacać proces ciągłego doskonalenia w przedsiębiorstwie. W ramach badań własnych oceniono jakość usług bankowych w wybranym banku województwa śląskiego.
The article presents the nature of services and the issue of evaluation the quality of services. It has been presented the method of evaluation the quality service – SERVQUAL and pointed the possibility of using it for identification the strengths and weaknesses of the provided services. The results of the assessment the service quality using SERVQUAL should enrich the process of continuous improvement in the company. During own research the quality of banking services in the selected Silesian bank has been assessed.

Opis:
The first experience of quality by multimedia applications' users takes place during the setup phase of a new connection. If the setup phase is not accepted or "slowly accepted", the confidence of the user decreases. The user becomes more sensitive when he/she pays the connections with assured quality of service (QoS). In this case, the process of call request should be also accomplished with QoS guarantees. This paper presents the signaling sub-system implemented within the EuQoS system. The EuQoS signaling process follows main assumptions of next generation networks (NGN) architecture and performs tasks related with codec agreement between multimedia end users, admission control and resource reservation functions. In this paper, we present analytical, simulation and experimental results showing the impact of signaling system performance on quality of experience (QoE) for the potential users of multi-layer EuQoS system. In particular, the presented approach aims at ensuring user QoE of the connection setup phase by ensuring QoS for transferring signaling messages by the network.

The predicted annual growth of energy consumption in ICT by 4% towards 2020, despite improvements and efficiency gains in technology, is challenging our ability to claim that ICT is providing overall gains in energy efficiency and Carbon Imprint as computers and networks are increasingly used in all sectors of activity. Thus we must find means to limit this increase and preserve quality of service (QoS) in computer systems and networks. Since the energy consumed in ICT is related to system load, ]this paper discusses the choice of system load that offers the best trade-off between energy consumption and QoS.We use both simple queueing models and measurements to develop and illustrate the results. A discussion is also provided regarding future research directions.

Self-similar nature of ICT traffic causes big impact on queuing performance needed in providing a certain level of Quality of Service. Therefore, synthesis of fractal process for simulation and analysis purposes should be fast and accurate. In this article it is proposed how to simplify distribution of interarrivals in the renewal process in order to implement the inverse distribution technique to generate random variables. Proposed method improves simulation performance by reducing computational complexity leaving the accuracy almost unchanged.

Passenger transport companies increasingly aim to implement passenger transport services of improved efficiency and effectiveness by raising the comfort of travel and ensuring passenger satisfaction by increasing quality of their service. The comfort of the journey is seen as security, punctuality, efficiency and friendly passenger service. The analysis and evaluation of the quality of passenger transport services allow to specify the time of travel, comfort, punctuality, availability of public transport links and the costs of transport services provided. The passenger streams and assessment of the urban transport services quality covered by this study allow for indication of problems in the researched area and suggestion of improvements in the transport services. The development of urban transport is subject to the increasing number of population, expansion of cities and constant technical progress. Expansion of cities and large number of citizens are closely linked to the urban transport allowing for the citizens’ mobility by various means of public transport. Carriage operations are repeatedly grouped according to travel direction, scale of demand for transport, the scope and length of the carriage, stability of transport needs or required transport speed.
