Opis:
The increasing prevalence of chronic diseases, including cancers, is becoming a very serious public health problem. The main risk factor in its etiology is life style including unhealthy diet and low level of physical activity. Knowledge and health awareness regarding this issue is an essential element of oncological prevention and education aimed at changing people’s behaviour toward health-oriented. Presented results are a part of broader diagnostic activities undertaken within the Onkogranty II project. They include an analysis of internal and external preventive programs implemented in schools in Bytom in the context cancer risk factors such as low physical activity and unhealthy diet. The analysis shows that in the surveyed schools many activities are undertaken to promote a healthy diet and physical activity, but in most cases there is no reference to the cancer prevention. Many initiatives are action-based, not supported by the diagnosis of the school community’s health needs. The results obtained show that the selection of a preventive program should be preceded by a diagnosis of the needs of both students, parents and the entire school/local community. After its implementation, it would be necessary to evaluate the actions taken to assess the effectiveness of the program and introduce the necessary modifications. It is also worth taking care of regularity and helicity of the transmitted content in order to consolidate and systematize the knowledge and skills of students. Above all, taking into account epidemiological data on the prevalence of cancer, content related to oncological prevention should be included in school’s preventive and educational programs as well as in health education.

The process of population ageing is observed not only in Poland but also in other European countries. Physiological processes of ageing  reduces the functional capacity. In particular, associated diseases, progressive weakness and failure of the motor system increases the risk of collapse in seniors. Dangerous consequences of falls, inter alia, injuries, can often cause death, what justifies its classification as a so-called geriatric giant. Health and psychosocial consequences of falls should be noted. Therefore, there is a great need for induction of preventive measures. Many results of studies constantly show, that an effective intervention in preventing falls in seniors should include, first and foremost, multidirectional rehabilitation, which aims to improve balance and increase postural strength muscle. In addition, prevention should include: patient education, pharmacotherapy prescribed by a medical specialist, eyesight improvement, elimination of potential risks surrounding the patient. The introduction of multi-directional prevention of falls can reduce the risk of their occurrence up to 50%

RM/RA CRAMM is a comprehensive risk assessment methodology for crisis management, which consists of identifying, analysing and assessing risks. Quantitative outputs serve as a basis for identifying risk management priorities, preparing preventive measures and responding to identified facts. The methodology is applicable to a wide range of risk types, natural risks, including fire risks, technology risks, criminal risks and other risks of a social nature. The RM/RA CRAMM methodology provides the basis for determining the real state of a given territory, allowing it to sort individual risks according to priorities. Risk assessment is the starting point for the reaction phase. By reacting, we mean preventive measures, including the allocation of Police units, Integrated rescue system units, their training, technical equipment and population awareness. The RM/RA CRAMM methodology provides the basis for determining the real situation in the given territory, allowing the individual risks to be sorted according to the priorities. Risk assessment is the starting point for the reaction phase.

Introduction. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prophylaxis in general practice, especially in rural areas, is a major organizational challenge. Objective. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of CVD risk factors in the studied population, and to identify the effect of the number of planned prophylactic consultations on selected clinical parameters, risk factors, and total cardiovascular risk on the SCORE scale (Systemic Coronary Risk Evaluation). Materials and method. The study included patients of a rural general practice, aged 35–55 years, with at least one modifiable CVD risk factor. Medical history was obtained, a physical examination performed, blood glucose levels, lipid profile, BMI, waist circumference and blood pressure measured and the SCORE cardiovascular risk at baseline and at the end of the study calculated. All participants were provided with targeted specific education. Analysis was performed in two groups of patients (1 and 2), where group 1 had one more prophylactic consultation than Group 2. Results. The results at baseline and a year later were compared in pharmacologically untreated patients, 26 in Group 1 and 34 in Group 2. In Group 1, which had had more prophylactic consultations, a statistically significant decrease was found in the mean systolic blood pressure: 131.000–124.782 (p= 0.02721), mean diastolic blood pressure: 86.846–83.462 (p=0.01111), and a statistically significant decrease in total cardiovascular risk on the SCORE scale (p=0.0478). Conclusions. The higher number of preventive consultations had an impact on a statistically significant decrease in mean blood pressure and mean SCORE value. The year-long cardiovascular disease prophylaxis programme proved less effective than expected, and neither a decrease in body weight nor an improvement in lipid metabolism was achieved in any of the groups.

Purpose: To determine the level of knowledge regarding cervical carcinoma risk factors and to evaluate selected health behaviours presented by nurses in primary prevention of the reproductive organ malignancies.Materials and methods: The diagnostic survey with the use of self-constructed questionnaire was applied in the study. Data was collected among 184 nurses from two provinces in Poland. Results: According to the nurses, family history of cancer was the major risk factor in cervical carcinoma. The second most frequently enumerated risk factor, determining the incidence of cervical carcinoma, was oncogenic HPV types of infections. Nurses also mentioned frequent changes of sexual partners and early sexual initiation. More than 50% of respondents (54.3%) declared family history of various types of cancer including cervical carcinoma (3.8%). The majority of nurses were sexually active (82.6%) and had one partner (79.9%). Almost all nurses (93.5%) reported they had the cytological examination done regularly and 52.7% had it during last 12 months. Conclusions: The level of nurses’ knowledge regarding predisposing factors of cervical carcinoma development is good. Behaviours declared by the majority of them, belonged to the category of pro-health behaviours, which helps in the early detection and treatment of cancer.

Security is an important element and an important factor of the development and attractiveness of the territory. This factor is increasingly taken into account by both investors and individuals. Polish accession to the EU and NATO was a great opportunity and the possibility for development of crisis management system. Many changes took place also within the country (reforms, changes in legislation, etc.). These activities help to build a more efficient system, not only in terms of security but also in crisis management system. One of the elements of crisis management system – is a communication system - which allows us to maintain a high level of safety. The purpose of this article is to describe and characterize of the communication systems – which are used in crisis management in Poland.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. In recent decades the use of orthodontic appliances in Poland has increased; however, data on their influence on changes of components of the microbiome connected with oral biofilm are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate oral microbiota in terms of their role as risk factors for health complications. Materials and method. The study included 100 patients treated with removable or fixed appliances. Oral hygiene and gingival health were determined, and periodontal swabs taken from each patient for parasitological, bacteriological and mycological microscopic and in vitro examinations. Results. Oral protists and various pathogenic and opportunistic bacterial and fungal strains were identified in the superficial layer of biofilm. A higher prevalence of bacteria, Enterococcus faecalis, E. faecium, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and various strains of yeast-like fungi from the Candida albicans group, occurred in patients treated with the fixed appliance than in those using a removable appliance or not treated orthodontically. In some periodontal samples from patients treated with fixed appliances, cysts of the Acanthamoeba spp. were found. Conclusions. The use of orthodontic appliances alters the status of the oral cavity; it has impact on the colonization of oral biofilm by opportunistic/pathogenic strains, and increases the risk of their dissemination to various human tissues and organs. Pretreatment examination of oral microbiome, its monitoring particularly during treatment with fixed appliances, and preventive elimination of the potentially pathogenic strains to avoid health complications, are highly recommended, especially in patients with impaired immunity.

Opis:
Researchers of the behavior of adolescents from the so-called high-risk groups suggest that due to the high level of problem behaviors (e.g. drinking alcohol, smoking, drug use, violence) the most appropriate preventive work is the harm reduction approach, especially in the case of borderline behaviors such as alcohol use (Pisarska, Bobrowski, Greń, Ostaszewski, 2019: 343). Applying this type of strategy to illegal behavior such as drug use, especially NPS (the so-called legal highs) seems to be a bit more problematic. Meanwhile, the results of research on the reception (process evaluation) of the “Taste of Life Debate” preventive program scenario indicate that selected universal procedures, intended for young people with an average level of risk, can be successfully used in work with young people at risk, as long as they relate to behavior that is not normative in the social sense (such as using NPS). The work is a short comparison of evaluation results in the universal group and in the high-risk group.

Opis:
Suicide behavior in children and adolescents is a leading cause of injury and death in the paediatric age group. Recent statistics indicate that the number of suicides and suicide-related events in adolescents has risen in past few years. Boys succeed in their suicide attempts more frequently than girls, mainly because they use more lethal methods, such as firearms or hanging. Girls generally attempt suicide by ingesting pills and are more frequently resuscitated. According to the literature, there are following risk factors of suicide: demographic, psychological, psychiatric, economic, bilogical. Information about the epidemiology and risk factors of such behavior is important for policy-making and prevention. The method of suicide prevention found to be most effective is a systematic, direct-screening procedure, early identification and cooperation of different institutions with high risk groups and families.
Wśród najbardziej skutecznych strategii zapobiegania samobójstwom wyróżnia się współpracę wielu służb z grupami i rodzinami wysokiego ryzyka, wczesne wykrywanie problemu i monitorowanie.

Opis:
Biegunka podróżnych to zespół objawów spowodowanych ostrym zakażeniem przewodu pokarmowego, występujący u osób podróżujących poza miejsce zamieszkania (zwykle za granicę) do krajów o niższych standardach higienicznych, zwłaszcza do strefy tropikalnej i subtropikalnej. W artykule przedstawiono podstawowe zasady zapobiegania biegunce podróżnych u ogólnie zdrowych dorosłych, tj. przestrzeganie zasad higieny, profilaktykę farmakologiczną i szczepienia ochronne.
Travellers’ diarrhoea is defined as a set of signs and symptoms caused by an acute gastrointestinal tract infection that affect people travelling outside their place of residence (usually abroad to the countries of lower hygiene standards, especially to the tropics and the subtropical regions). Africa, Central and South America as well as Asia are the highest-risk destinations. Travellers’ diarrhoea is believed to be the most frequent travel-related health problem. Despite of the fact that this is usually a mild and self-limiting medical condition, it may interfere with the individual defined travel-related objectives, for example relaxation or business. The aim of this review is to present the basic preventive methods of travellers’ diarrhoea in generally healthy adults such as adherence to hygiene recommendations, chemoprevention and vaccinations.

Healthcare workers, especially those with direct patient contact are amongst professions with the highest rate of workrelated musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), physical therapists (PTs) being one of them. Our objective was to review current knowledge relating to the prevalence, risk factors and prevention of WMSDs among PTs. Pubmed, Google Scholar and PEDro databases were searched for terms relating to WMSDs in PTs from inception to 2015. The prevalence of WMSDs among PTs was high, with lifetime prevalence reported as 55–91%, and 12-month prevalence ranges 40–91.3%, and the lower back as the most frequently affected, with estimates of a lifetime prevalence ranging 26–79.6%, and a 12-month prevalence ranging 22–73.1%, followed most often by the neck, upper back and shoulders. The major risk factors for workrelated low back pain (LBP) were: lifting, transferring, repetitive movements, awkward and static postures, physical load, treating a large number of patients in a single day and working while injured. Low back pain seems to be age- and genderrelated with a higher prevalence in females, younger PTs and PTs working in rehabilitation settings. Physical therapists, as a consequence of work-related LBP, may seek treatment, modify their daily living and leisure (lifestyle) activities, use aids and equipment or change their specialty area either within the profession or by leaving it. Skills and knowledge as to correct body mechanics do not prevent work-related injuries. Mechanical aids used for a patient transfer should be adopted by PTs and new strategies should be developed to reduce their WMSDs without compromising the quality of treatment. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are significant workplace problems affecting occupational health, productivity and the careers of dental professionals. The prevalence of MSDs is on the rise for all types of dental workers. In spite of different patterns of work culture, there are parallel levels of symptoms in dentists across nations. Risk factors for MSDs are multifactorial. Symptoms appear very early in careers, with higher prevalence of MSDs even during educational training. Ergonomics improvements, health promotion and organizational interventions are necessary to reduce the risk. An interdisciplinary approach with progressive efforts should be taken to address MSDs in dental professionals.

Background: The most common risk factors for running-related injuries are mistakes, such as insufficient warm-up and stretching exercises, during training. Good preparation and proper training reduces the risk of sport-related injuries. Aim of the study: To examine fundamental movement patterns and likelihood of injury in amateur runners. Material and methods: Twenty-four amateur long-distance runners from Opole region (Poland) were divided into two groups. The first group comprised 12 runners from the club “Kotwica Brzeg”, who did a proper warmup before training and stretching exercises after training. The second group comprised 12 runners from other clubs who did not undertake any warm-up or stretching exercises (control group). Fundamental movement patterns were tested by the Functional Movement Screen test (FMS). Results: The mean FMS test score was higher in “Kotwica Brzeg” runners (17.08 points) than in the control group (15.50 points), but this was not statistically significant. The “Kotwica Brzeg” runners performed better in five of the FMS tests, but this was only significant for the rotational stability test. Conclusions: Runners who did a proper warm-up and stretching exercises achieved better results in the FMS test, which may reduce the risk of running-related injuries.
