Opis:
Mid-field ponds fill a whole range of ecological functions that have only recently started to be appreciated. One of these functions is the retention of various forms of nitrogen and phosphorus, migrating from agroecosystems, which, to some extent, protect the flowing water and accumulated in larger reservoirs against contamination with these components. This specific role of ponds as a nutrient trap is particularly important in the context of the needs related to the implementation of the Nitrates Directive, the Water Framework Directive and the Helsinki Convention in Poland. The aim of the study is to present the role and importance of mid-field ponds and similar small water bodies in the protection of the quality of other types of surface waters.

W pracy przedstawiono wyniki, prowadzonych w latach 1995-2001, badań florystyczno-fitosocjologicznych oczek wodnych. Analizą objęto obszar 1 km², położony w okolicach Czepina w województwie zachodniopomorskim. Oceniono układ szaty roślinnej w sześciu śródpolnych oczkach wodnych. Przedstawiono wyniki badań florystycznych i fitosocjologicznych w kolejnych latach, w czterech ekochorach koncentrycznie ułożonych wokół tafli wodnej.
Small mid-field water holes in agricultural areas are under a high risk of anthropogenic changes. Six such ponds (situated in 1 km² arable land, near Czepino in zachodniopomorskie province) were studied for seven years since 1995 till 2001. The main aim of the study was to analyse floral and phytosociological differentiation in four zones of ponds: in open water, littoral, scarps and external zone. Sixty five species including one vulnerable to extinction were found in relatively small area of ponds. Existing habitats were classified to four types: rushes, scrub, nitrophilous trodden areas and arable fields. Rush communities Phalaridetum arundinaceae, Typhetum latifoliae and the community with Senecio congestus were dominating. There were also ruderal communities (Urtico-Aegopodietum podagrariae, Calystegio-Epilobietum hirsuti, community with Urtica dioica and Elymus repens), rare scrub communities (Calamagrostis canescens) and nitrophilous community in arable fields (Apera spica-venti). Unfavourable atmospheric conditions, land configuration and anthropogenic conditions caused floral and phytosociological changes. The lack of water resulted in permanent habitat transformation from an open water table to overgrowing ponds. Periodical water deficit caused also physical and floral changes in four plant zones. Some species of swampy (Phragmitetea) and aquatic (Lemnetea, Potametea) habitats retreated to the benefit of meadow (Molinio-Arrhenatheretea) and ruderal (Artemisietea, Stellarietea) plant species. Evaluation of habitat moisture in the littoral zone revealed changes from permanently swamp to swampy. Evaluation of communities showed that outstanding and unique communities transformed into moderately big. So the changes in water conditions caused permanent and irreversible changes in flora leading to the impoverishment of agricultural landscape.

Crayfish are valuable invertebrates that are constantly in great demand in all corners of the Earth. Breeding crayfish is not only large-scale production as it can also be arranged in small volumes using pools and installations of closed water supply. Cultivation of crayfish generates profit after a certain period of time, if all biotechnological norms of cultivation are considered. Cultivation of crayfish is a rather promising production, in which it is possible to obtain from 200 to 300% of stable profits during 3–4 years old. The article gives an overview of the technology of growing crayfish, taking into account the characteristics of farming in Ukraine. The basic biotechnological stages of the establishment and operation of the economy are determined, calculations of capital expenditures for the establishment of the economy are presented and the profitability of the project for the production of freshwater crayfish is determined. Cultivation of river crayfish makes it possible to obtain environmentally friendly products that can compete on the markets of Ukraine or EU countries. Also, this way of growing crayfish allows getting stocking material for release in natural reservoirs in order to restore the populations of river crayfish.

Opis:
The presence of small artificial water reservoirs is typical of the landscape of small agricultural catchments. The old mill dammings are used today mostly for recreation and fish farming. Moreover, they are a very important part of the hydrological system of small rivers, stabilizing and shaping the discharge and physico-chemical characteristics of water. Coupled with the landscape function of the ponds goes their functioning in conditions of strong human pressure in the urban space. A canalized rivers in the urban parts of its courses picks up rubbishes washed down from the surface and coming from a storm sewer system and sometimes from leachate from a sanitary sewage system. An example of hydrological systems operating in such environments are Dzierżązna and Sokołówka catchments (Fig. 1). The first one is located north of Zgierz in the impact zone of the city of Łódź. Despite agro-forestry character, a significant impact on water quality is the chalets area and the A2 motorway crossing the catchment. The Sokołówka catchment is flowing through the urban area of the Łódź city. Both of the river flows are highly variable, and the water is heavily contaminated and has a high load of suspension (Tab. 1)In both of the catchments the role of artificial reservoirs created to improve the quality of water is the important issue. In the Dzierżązna catchment the several retention and infiltration ponds are working for regulating the outflow from the A2 motorway. In the Sokołówka valley the biofilter has been recently built (Fig. 2). It was constructed in order to purify urban storm- and waste water (sequential biofiltration system of Sokołówka – SSBS). The main purpose of the constructed SSBS was to remove sediments, suspended solids, particulate pollutants, petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, nutrients and bacterial contamination from storm-water runoff through sedimentation and filtration mechanisms. The paper discusses the construction of both systems and technical solutions. To evaluate the effectiveness of their operation analyzed changes in the basic characteristics of physicochemical water parameters (water temperature, conductivity (SEC), pH, the concentration of dissolved oxygen, turbidity (NTU)) measured before and after both of cleansing systems in the year and multiyear (Fig. 3, Fig. 4).Attention has been also paid to the distribution of the mineral sediment deposited on the bottom of the biofilter SSBS system (Fig. 5). It was found that lowering the temperature in the winter and the appearance of a compact ice cap adversely affect the ability of biofilm to absorb pollutants causing (relative to the hot half year) an increase of conductivity, a higher pH and reducing of oxygenation of water.Identified mean changes of the selected physicochemical parameters of water discharged from the area of the A2 motorway to the Dzierżązna river system and as a result of the SSBS system operation to Sokołówka river (Fig. 6).All the measured parameters are reduced after passing through both of systems. As a result of mechanical sedimentation the greatest reduction is suspended material transported by water – in the SSBS on average about 16% less than in untreated waters (in the Dzierżązna catchment this element was not measured). The pH of the water in both systems changes to the same extent – decreases by 10% in the Dzierżązna, and 7% in SSBS.

Opis:
Próbki pobierano z 4 warstw osadów, z głębokość: 0–5, 5–10, 10–20 i 20–30 cm. Pobór próbek wykonano jednorazowo w okresie zimowym (2014 roku), spod lodu, z trzech punktów. Materiał osadów przygotowano do dalszej analizy, zgodnie z procedurami stosowanymi w gleboznawstwie. Zawartość metali ciężkich (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb i Zn) wyznaczono metodą atomowej spektrometrii absorpcyjnej aparatem ASA ICE 3000 Thermo Scientific po uprzednim wytrawieniu w mieszaninie (5: 1) stężonych kwasów (HNO3 i HClO4). Wyższe wartości pH miały osady oczka położonego w parku wiejskim, niż oczka położonego w obrębie pól uprawnych (odczyn obojętny i zasadowy). W obu badanych oczkach wodnych największe stężenia badanych metali ciężkich wystąpiły w najgłębszych punktach badawczych (głęboczki). W oczku położonym w obrębie upraw rolnych najwyższe stężenia kadmu, miedzi, ołowiu i cynku wystąpiły w warstwie 0–5 cm, zaś niklu i chromu w warstwie 20–30 cm. W oczku położonym w parku najwyższe wartości wystąpiły w punkcie badawczym położonym w środku oczka części w warstwie 10–20 cm. Oczko nr 2 charakteryzowało się największymi średnimi stężeniami metali ciężkich, z wyjątkiem ołowiu w warstwie 10–20 cm. Według geochemicznej oceny jakości osadów zaproponowanej przez Bojakowską i Sokołowską [1998] większość próbek należy do I klasy czystości, a reszta okazyjnie do II-giej.
The main aim of the study was to assess the selected heavy metals pollution of bottom sediments of small water bodies of different catchment management. Two ponds located in Mostkowo village were chosen for investigation. The first small water reservoir is surrounded by the cereal fields, cultivated without the use of organic and mineral fertilizers (NPK). The second reservoir is located in a park near rural buildings. Sediment samples were collected by the usage of KC Denmark sediments core probe. Samples were taken from 4 layers of sediment, from depth: 0–5, 5–10, 10–20 and 20–30 cm. Sampling was made once during the winter period (2014 year) when ice occurred on the surface of small water bodies, from three points. The material was prepared for further analysis according to procedures used in soil science. The content of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) were determined by atomic absorption spectrometry by usage of ASA ICE 3000 Thermo Scientific after prior digestion in the mixture (5: 1) of concentrated acids (HNO3 and HClO4). Higher pH values were characteristic for sediments of pond located in a park than in pond located within the agricultural fields. In both small water bodies the highest heavy metal concentrations occurred in the deepest points of the research. In the sediments of the pond located within crop fields the highest concentration of cadmium, copper, lead and zinc were observed in a layer of 0–5 cm, wherein the nickel and chromium in a layer of 20–30 cm. In the sediments of the pond, located in the park the highest values occurred at the deepest sampling point in the layer taken form 10–20 cm. Sediments from second reservoir were characterized by the largest average concentrations of heavy metals, except the lead content in sediment form the layer of 10–20 cm. According to the geochemical evaluation of sediments proposed by Bojakowska and Sokołowska [1998], the majority of samples belongs to Ist purity class and occasionally to the IInd.

Opis:
The main purpose of this work was to determine the degree of negative impact of heavy metals accumulated in the water sediments to aquatic organisms. Samples of sediments were collected in winter 2013, from 4 layers of sediment (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm) at three points along the water reservoir. Sediments were prepared for analysis in accordance with the procedures applied in soil science. The analysis was carried out for the fraction with a particle diameter less than 1 mm. The total content of such elements as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn, was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (using the Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 series spectrometer) after digestion in a mixture (5:1) of concentrated acid HNO3 (65 %) and HClO4 (60%). The total Hg content was obtained by using the AMA 254 analyzer. Only the lead content in the analyzed samples of bottom sediments exceeded the contamination value given by polish law (the Regulation of the Minister of Environment). According to the classification of PGI samples of sediments are classified mainly as medium polluted sediments (Class II), with the exception of zinc and lead concentrations (Class III). Due to the value of the indicator of sediments ecological risk (Er) for cadmium, the examined sediments from small water reservoirs no. 1 and 2 should be classified as deposits with a higher rate of environmental contamination risk. The sediments from small water reservoirs no. 3 and 4 belong to the class of a much higher index of contamination risk. On the basis of the PER indicator (a degree of potential envi ronmental risk) the sediments from small water reservoirs located within the area of organic farming can be classified as contaminated by heavy metals to a moderate degree. On the other hand, the analyzed sediments of small water reservoirs no. 3 and 4 were classified as deposits with a severe degree of heavy metal contamination. On the basis of the LAW classification one can say that the bottom sediments of examined ponds were classified into different classes depending on the analyzed chemical element.

The main purpose of the paper was to determine the influence of catchment management on the bottom sediments quality of small water reservoirs as well as to determine toxic metal content in rushes. Samples of bottom sediments were collected in winter 2013 year, form 4 sediment layers (0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 20-30 cm) at three points along the body of water. The 48 samples were collected. Soil material was prepared according to the procedures used in soil science, the analysis was performed for the fraction with a particle diameter of less than 1 mm. Plant samples from single species aggregations were randomly cut from 5 to 10 locations of 20-50 m2 area. From these samples the average composite sample was prepared. The total content of such elements as Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry (using the Thermo Scientific iCE 3000 series spectrometer) after prior digestion in the mixture (5:1) of concentrated acids HNO3 (65%) and HClO4 (60%). Total Hg content was determined by the AMA 254 analyzer. Between the small water reservoirs adjacent to the areas where organic farming is used, and the reservoirs adjacent to the areas with mineral fertilization there are statistically significant differences in the concentrations of such metals as nickel (layers: 0-5, 5-10, 10-20 and 0-30 cm), as well as cobalt, chromium and iron (in a layer 5-10 cm). It has been found that some plants accumulate higher amounts of heavy metals (average values). Based on obtained results it can be stated that rushes actively captures large amounts of elements reaching studied objects and thereby protect the surface water of the reservoirs from contamination.

Opis:
The young glacial landscape of the nonhern Europe features numerous post-glacial structures, including drainless relief depressions which are usually filled with ater and are called ponds or kettle holes. Their prestence in Western Pomerania is associated mainly with a zonal arrangement of glacial forms related 10 the retreating icesheet front. Distribution of kettle holes was analysed in a region where their density is highly variable. The study covered mainly the Wełtyń Plateau, the Myślibórz. Lakeland, and the northern part of the Gorzów Plateau. About 11 thousand kettle holes smaller than 1.0 ha, marked on the late 19th century 1:25,000 topographic maps, were included in the analysis. The analysis of the kettle hole distribution, conducted with the aid of GIS software and spatial analysis statistics, demonstrates that the distribution of kettle hole dusters, the shape of the surrounding vegetation patches, and the kettle hole duster alingment may be important components of the retreat reconstruction. The elements mentioned, when factored in the analysis, may contribute to, i.a., understanding of the direction of the ice movement and the sequence of the icesheet front ranges.

Since ancient times, water was associated with colonization, being one of the main factors determining the localization of both cities and villages. Rivers, streams, water reservoirs were also the element contributing to the attractiveness of the rural landscape. Initially, the function of surface waters in the rural areas was limited to utility and connected with farm production. With time, the surface waters started being used for energy production and for industrial purposes. Proper management of surface waters also contributes to increase retention and reduce the risk of flooding. With time, streams and ponds became being used in mansion parks, which have been the endeavor enriching the composition. Today, rivers and water reservoirs in the villages no longer play such a significant utility and industrial role. Their function changed into mainly decorative and recreational. However, in many places the potential of using the areas adjoining rivers and ponds is not used by the village residents, which result in backfilling small water reservoirs in the villages and closing the visibility of flowing streams.

The paper presents the results of the research carried out in 2002/2003 and 2007/2008 hydrological years. Hydrological year 2002/2003 was a middledry year in terms of rainfall - 56 mm lower than multi-year, when the air temperature was 1,0°C lower than multi-year average air temperature. The second analyzed year, 2007/2008 was a dry year - the rainfall total was 103 mm lower than multi-year and the air temperature was 0,8°C lower than average. The research was carried out in catchments of ponds No. 1, 3, 5 and 6, lo-cated in Wielisławice and Laski forestries - area of Siemianice Experimental Forest Farm of Poznan University of Life Sciences. The forests of mentioned forestries are within range of Południowo-Wielkopolska Lowland, on Wysoczyzna Wieruszowska, which is differential morainic plain, cut with the river Prosna headwaters. Discussed areas are located in catchment of Niesob and Pomianka rivers, which are left-bank tributaries of Prosna river. Fresh mixed forest is predominating in analyzed ponds' catchments - it takes about 95% of the area, and pine in age of ab. 95 years is predominating species of the tree stand. In areas situated closest to the ponds in analyzed catchments, there is a predominance of proper podzol soils with grain size of loamy sand. The ponds, discussed in this paper, have features typical for water reservoirs, from which essential are: the presence of water table, the presence of clearly outlined recess of the area, presence of vegetation affiliated with wet areas. The ponds No. 1 and 6, which have gentle slope, are typical natural melt ponds, ponds no. 3 and 5 are the results of human activities, as evidence by their unnatural shapes. The ponds No. 1 and 3 have no outflow. The pond No. 5 situated at the foot of morainic slope - is intensively supplied by spring waters from adjacent areas and it has constant outflow. According to the information from the local residents, the pond no 5 used to be a fish pond, and pond no. 6 in XIX century used to have an outflow through the ditch - today there's only left 60 m long section. Drainage occurred only at high states, mostly during the spring thaws. Currently discussed pond does not have any drainage, which is mainly attributable to the incidence of lower water levels and silting of the ditch. Two wetlands having their own microcatchments, located in south-eastern and eastern part of the catchment, has an important role in the water management of pond's no 6 catchment. Results of the research confirm that in most of analyzed ponds meteorological conditions (precipitation and air temperature) had a significant impact on the change of the water level. The only exception was pond no. 5, where the changes of the water level were caused by intensive supply by the spring waters. Studies have also shown that an important element in the characteristics of forest ponds, in addition to their morphometric features, is the variability of water levels in these ponds. A key determinant of changes in water levels in analyzed ponds, was the course of meteorological conditions, as well as the nature and size. In the research period most variable were ponds no. 1 and 3, characterized by small size and outflow, and the smallest variability had pond no. 5, supplied by the spring waters. Basing on the results of research and analysis it was also found, that in ponds of small size and with no outflow, with the highest variability of water levels, water table may disappear completely. Disappearance of the water table falls in these ponds mostly during the summer half-years.

Opis:
Water is one of the most common chemical substances on Earth and one which is crucial in sustaining life of any organism , including humans. Owing to its existence in nature in three physical states ( liquid, gaseous and solid) water is in constant circulation ( hydrologic cycle). Because Poland has limited water resources ( only 4.8 dm3* d-1 per one inhabitant) it is of primary importance for Polish economy to use water sensibly. Earth is a planet of oceans. The water resources of the world are huge and make 1386 billion km3 . As far as the volume of its annual precipitation is concerned , Poland occupies one of the final positions on the list of European countries. In Poland lakes play an important role in the country's water balance. On the whole, the area taken by lakes is 318 thousand ha, while the overall volume of water in retention reservoirs is approximately 3200 hm3.

Opis:
In recent years, a significant growth in the population of the European beaver Castor fiber L., both in Poland and around the world, has been observed. Beavers significantly transform the natural environment around the sites where they occur. Therefore, it is important to accurately recognize the colonization patterns of new territories by the European beaver and to gain knowledge about the longevity of populations in already occupied areas. This applies especially to areas of natural value, including protected areas. Fieldwork carried out in the spring of 2021, provided information on the distribution of the European beaver and number of individuals in the Magura National Park (MNP) in the Beskid Niski, an arboreous mountain range in southern Poland. The collected data were compared with similar mappings conducted in this Park in 1996 and 2010. This allowed us to characterize the change dynamics of the beaver population in the MNP area and to describe the changes in spatial distribution of sites inhabited by beavers. During the period of 1996-2021, the population of the European beaver increased from 23-26 to 64 individuals in the study area, with a maximum of 68 in 2010. Beaver colonization of ever smaller watercourses draining higher-located catchments and a change in the characteristics of beaver-inhabited sites have been observed. The average number of dam structures within one site as well as site length have increased. Furthermore, the dominant dwelling type has changed from burrows and open-water lodges to bank lodges, which combine characteristics of the two former. We estimate that the period when beavers migrated further up along the watercourses in the studied area was in the years 2010-2021.

Opis:
The information about the distribution of caddisflies (Trichoptera) in mid-western Poland being a part of the Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Lowland (WKL) faunistic region is still scarce compared to other regions. To close the knowledge gap, we investigated caddisflies larvae and occasionally imagines in a selected area in mid-western Poland in 2011. The aim was the preliminary estimation of species richness and abundance of protected, rare and endangered species in this part of WKL. For the study 63 sampling sites representing broad spectrum of habitat types were chosen and analysed with various ecological indices. In total, 75 species: 46 as larvae and 51 as imagines were found in the area. Among them, one protected species (Crunoecia irrorata), 5 listed in the Polish Red List (Erotesis baltica, Hydropsyche bulgaromanorum, Ylodes simulans, Limnephulus borealis and L. fuscinervis), and 11 species not reported for WKL yet were found in the area. In the whole material, the most frequent and dominant species was Limnephilus flavicornis. In contrast, 50 species were recorded in less than 5% of sites. The highest species richness was found in rivers and fish ponds with total number of 33 and 32 species, respectively, whereas the lowest one in springs (5 species) and bogs (6 species). The highest species diversity obtained with probability of intraspecificencounter (PIE) Index was found in fish ponds (0.90) and rivers (0.85) as well. In contrast, streams had the lowest PIE value (0.60) in the area. The most valuable habitat types with regard to protected, endangered and rare species were rivers and fish ponds, as well as lakes and streams of lower importance. To conclude, our investigation indicated a high species richness and diversity in the area, which was related to high habitat heterogeneity, thus having significant importance for biodiversity preservation in mid-western Poland. Moreover, fish ponds and rivers were the most valuable habitat types significantly contributing to species richness, diversity and preservation of rare and endangered species in this area.
