Religious and sacred poetry
Opis:
Religious poetry (and sacred poetry) is written nowadays as often as in the past, but it frequently appears in new contexts. Metaphysical references may be found in various historical, aesthetic and educational settings. Max Sheller argues that “an act of religious cognition is more similar to artistic experience of the world than to the cognition typical for science and metaphysics” . How close, then, poetry and religion are in this respect! The journal Religious and Sacred Poetry (Poezja Religijna i Sakralna) offers the possibility of exploring the common ground of religion and poetry. We are very happy to present the first issue of the journal to our readers.

Opis:
The paper looks at two book-length poems by Alice Oswald’s: Dart (2002) and Memorial (2011) as translation projects, with an aim to understand both the nature of Oswald’s poetic practice and her concept of what is the meaning and goal of translation in creative work. I claim that translation, in the special sense the poet gives to this term, is at the very core of her work. In my analysis I concentrate on the physical aspect of Oswald’s poetic practice, the role of the body, movement in space, muscular effort, rhythm and memorization of poetry in her projects. I also look at the ways of crossing the divide between the human and non-human, linking language to the voice of the natural world and returning to oral poetry in her work.

musicality of poetry
Opis:
At its beginnings poetry was always connected with music. In Ancient Greece poetry was not only sung, but also danced. Later, the arts separated. However, in Romanticism music became once more a very important notion for poets. Romantics believed that music helped to create the landscape of the human soul. For the same reasons, musicali-ty of poetry fascinated symbolists. In my article, I am analysing two poems of Paul Verlaine, a French romantic very im-portant also for the Symbolist mouvement, and a master piece of Young Poland’s Sym-bolism and Impressionism poetry by Leopold Staff. As the poets use a number of pro-ceedings to change their words into music, the three poems are very musical. Taking into consideration that symbolists believed that music was able to transmit emotional meanings, the musical form helped them to prepare their readers to come to a deeper sense. Not containing any story, all poems are purely lyrical. Each of them evokes autumnal rain which mix with tears, all poetic personae being extremely sad. The musicality lets the readers understand deeper their sadness which reflects also their powerlessness, so famous in the Decadent mouvement. Briefly, thanks to the use of music the poets man-age to draw a beautiful picture of a Decadent soul.

The essay concerns the work of Joanna Mueller, who is one of the main representatives of polish linguistic poetry. Her project combines the tradition of linguistic poetry and body experience. This strategy requires the development of a new understanding of the language, which will no longer be conceived as a trap references, but rather as one of many elements of reality. The best way to describe the work of the poet’s imagery is stratification, both in terms of the attitudes adopted by Mueller, by the subjects, to the construction of the poem. Equally important it seems to be the prospect of motherhood, both in terms of artistic activity, as well as the practices of life.

In the article, the author analyses the satirical works by Julian Tuwim published in his poetic collections. By indicating the strong bonds between poetry and satire in the poet’s works, the author explains the phenomenon of the unwavering topicality of Tuwim’s satire having generalising ambitions. She has considered the poet’s masterful combination of the poetic perspective with the attitude of a satirist as a factor which enables the generalisation of the critical diagnosis. However, she argues that the universal dimension of his wide-scope satirical works is mainly determined by the poet’s worldview-based horizons, which constituted the point of reference for his critical evaluation of the existing social reality, which exposed the destructive influence of a community on an individual. She also stated that he was able to peer deep into the mentality of the mindless members of the “tyrannous community” by virtue of his distance towards himself, in turn being the result of his sense of the absurdity of his own existence.

The presented review concerns Krzysztof Siwczyk’s latest book of poetry. Jasnopis, published under the imprint of a5 publisher in 2016, refers to the subject matter that the poet has dealt with so far; however, clothing it a new, lighter, less complicated dress; following the current trends and at the same time resigning from all extravagance. The unpredictable world was closed in a quite predictable and tamed form. Yet, the present review focuses not only on the issues raised by the poems included in the volume, but also on the analysis of the poetic mechanisms employed by the author, the examination of the dialogue which Siwczyk establishes with other contemporary writers. Moreover, the reviewer attempts to situate the latest collection of the Silesian writer on the map of his previous poetic works.

The article deals with the origin, development and importance of the Ukrainian literature that has been present in Poland since 1956. It was then that Ukrainians were able not only to easily express their artistic creativity, but they could also publish their works in the newly created media. The founders of the Ukrainian poetry in Poland were Ostap Lapskyy, Eugene Samohvalenko, Jakiv Hudemchuk, Mila Luchak, Olga Petyk and others. Among the main motives of their poems were longing for their homeland, loss of their native land, love of the homeland, and a high value of their native language. Since the eighties of 20 century, there has appeared literature of the new, younger generation.

Opis:
Autorka szkicu rekonstruuje punkt widzenia Rich i porównuje go z koncepcjami Franco „Bifo” Berardiego, z książki „Uprising. On poetry and finance”. Powołując się na przykłady z polskiej poezji ostatniej dekady, szkic stara się udzielić odpowiedzi na pytanie o pracę, która odbywa się w wierszu.
The starting point of the paper is the social function of poetry, as understood by Adrienne Rich in her later essays. According to Rich, the single most important function or „capacity” delivered by poetry today is to continuously remind us of the things that we might want (as individuals as well as a society), our forgotten or buried desires. In her manifesto „Poetry and Commitment” Rich asks about the ways in which poetry intervenes in one’s life – how, with all its formal aspects and aesthetic mechanisms it enables us to imagine an everyday life different from the one we already have. In the paper the authoress compares Rich’s point of view to that of Franco „Bifo” Berardi in his last book „Uprising. Poetry and Finance”. Using Polish poetry of the last ten years or so as an example, the paper reflects on the actual work of (and the inside of) the poem.

Opis:
It has been suggested that in nonsense literature the form sometimes directs the events of the story (Tigges 1988, Lecercle 1994). Translation of a poem may make this even more evident, as with "Mr Pii Poo" (1956, originally “Herra Pii Poo”), a poem by the Finnish author Kirsi Kunnas, born in 1924. "Mr Pii Poo" tells a story about a magician in a conflict between rural and urban elements, a figure who is introduced also as a witch and who could at the same time be interpreted as an alter ego for the poet Kunnas. In this poem, Kirsi Kunnas binds a bizarre bundle of rhymed and free verses around the Finnish word noita (a witch) and its multiple uses as a noun, a pronoun and a case ending. Sirke Happonen discusses nonsense elements of this witty and whimsical poem by describing its translation process from Finnish into English – a piece of work she has done with the help of her nonsensical colleagues. (As a small epilogue, Happonen presents a "movable reading" of another poem by Kunnas called “Kattila ja perunat”, "The Pan and the Potatoes".)

She creates situation in which students have not read the text they were asked to read and explains how exercises can lead to devel-oping self¬ awareness that encourages reading. A lesson that leads to interpreting Anna Świr-szczyńska’s poem Budowałam barykadę [I Built a Barricade] motivates reading Adam Mickie-wicz’s Reduta Ordona [Ordon’s Redoubt]. The author describes a process of presenting poetic texts to the lower secondary school student in a way that makes him realize important exis-tential problems undertaken by the poetry.

In the following article an attempt will be made to see how in Blake’s poetry and painting the figure of Satan becomes associated with rationalism and the notion of misguided creativity. In this aspect Satan is consistently identified with Urizen, Blake’s personification of the fallen human reason and the creator of the material universe. This identification functions as a critique of empiricism and rationalism characteristic for the Age of Reason.
