Silybum marianum L. (Milk thistle) extracts are the main source of silymarin that is a mixture of various flavonolignan (silybin (silibinin), silydianin and silychristin). Silymarin of milk thistle has a hepatoprotective activity for liver cirrhosis and chronic inflammatory. Silybum marianum regeneration from hypocotyl explants and evaluation of their callogenesis, growth and total flavolignan (silymarin) upon copper sulphate (as abiotic elicitor) elicitation was targeted. Copper sulphate (CuSO4) was applied in concentrations of 0, 3, 5, 7 and 9 µM to elicit the silymarin production in cultures. The elicitation periods used in this study were 2, 4, 7, 14 and 28 days. Half-strength MS medium recorded better results relative to full-strength MS one and seed incubation in the darkness at room temperature resulted in rapid germination and reached to the gar lid after 10 days. Callus fresh and dry weights as well as growth index were gradually increased with increasing the copper sulphate concentration till 5 µM while decreased thereafter at any elicitation period. With the increase of the elicitation period, the increase of the previous parameters was observed. Flavonolignan (silymarin) was positively correlated with CuSO4 levels since all levels of copper sulphate significantly enhanced its content in relative to the control. Additionally, more silymarin was accumulated after 4 or 7 days and the accumulation significantly decreased when the elicitation period reached 14 days more. The highest silymarin (flavolignan) content (11.79 and 11.67 mg g–1 DW) was obtained when 5 or 7 µM copper sulphate levels were combined with 4 days elicitation period, being about five-fold of the control.

Ocenę produkcyjno-ekonomiczną uprawy pszenżyta ozimego wykonano na podstawie wyników eksperymentu polowego przeprowadzonego w latach 1999-2003 w Rolniczej Stacji Doświadczalnej Zawady (52o20’ N; 22o 30’ E), należącej do Akademii Podlaskiej w Siedlcach. Pierwszym czynnikiem doświadczenia była obecność i rodzaj międzyplonu: obiekt kontrolny, komonica zwyczajna, komonica zwyczajna + życica wielokwiatowa, gorczyca biała, gorczyca biała – mulcz, natomiast drugim – stosowanie słomy jako nawozu: bez słomy, ze słomą. W pierwszym roku po zastosowaniu międzyplonów i słomy uprawiano ziemniaki jadalne, a w drugim – pszenżyto ozime. Porównano plony, wartość produkcji, bezpośrednie koszty produkcji i nadwyżkę bezpośrednią pszenżyta ozimego uprawianego w drugim roku po zastosowaniu międzyplonów, słomy i międzyplonów ze słomą. Najlepszy wynik produkcyjno-ekonomiczny zapewniło pszenżyto ozime uprawiane w drugim roku po mieszance komonicy zwyczajnej z życicą wielokwiatową w kombinacji ze słomą.
The field experiment was conducted at the Agriculture Research Station Zawady (52o20’ N; 22o 30’ E) owned by the Podlasie Academy in Siedlce. This work presents results from the years 1999-2003 and 2007, in which harvests, value of production, direct manufacturing costs, direct surplus of winter triticale were compared. This winter triticale was planted in the second year after the application of catch crop, straw and catch crop with straw. The first factor of experiment is the presence and kind of catch crop: control object, birdsfood trefoil, birdsfood trefoil + Italian ryegrass, white mustard, white mustard – mulch. The second one is the presence of straw: without straw, with straw. Table potatoes were cultivated in the first year after application of catch crop and straw, and winter triticale in the second year. The best productive and economic result was obtained using winter triticale cultivated in the second year after mixture of birdsfoot trefoil with Italian ryegrass in combination with straw.

Paper presents the results of investigations from 1999-2002, which aimed at economic evaluation of table potato production under conditions of differentiated organic fertilization. Two factors were examined in the experiment fertilization with undersown crops (control object, farmyard manure, white clover, Italian ryegrass, white mustard, white mustard + mulch) and fertilization with spring barley straw (subblock with and without straw). Obtained experiment results enabled to state, that the fertilization of table potato with intercrops in combinations with or without straw significantly decreased the direct costs of production in comparison to farmyard manure fertilization. The best productive and economic results in table potato cultivation were obtained in combinations fertilized with white clover and white clover plus straw.
W pracy przedstawiono wyniki badań z lat 1999-2002, których celem było dokonanie oceny ekonomicznej produkcji ziemniaka jadalnego w warunkach zróżnicowanego nawożenia organicznego. W doświadczeniu badano dwa czynniki: nawożenie międzyplonem (obiekt kontrolny, obornik, koniczyna biała, życica wielokwiatowa, gorczyca biała, gorczyca biała-mulcz) i nawożenie słomą jęczmienia jarego (podblok bez słomy, podblok ze słomą). Otrzymane wyniki badań pozwalają stwierdzić, że nawożenie ziemniaka międzyplonami w kombinacjach bez słomy lub ze słomą spowodowało istotny spadek bezpośrednich kosztów produkcji w porównaniu do nawożenia obornikiem. Najlepsze wyniki produkcyjne i ekonomiczne w uprawie ziemniaka uzyskano z kombinacji nawożonych koniczyną białą i koniczyną białą ze słomą.

Blackberries (Rubus spp.) have significant nutraceutical properties, providing phenolic compounds for the consumers. These compounds are useful to human health due to their high antioxidant activity. However, most blackberries destined for fresh markets become unmarketable in 2 to 3 days due to decay and leakage, because they have thin and fragile skin. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of salicylic acid (SA) and calcium chloride (CaCl2) on extending the postharvest quality and bioactive compounds of blackberry during refrigerated storage. Blackberry fruits cv. ‘Jumbo’ were dipped in 2% CaCl2, or in 2.0 mM salicylic acid (SA) for 10 min. Total soluble solids contents, titratable acidity, pH, ascorbic acid contents, total phenolics contents, and total antioxidant activity were investigated initially on 4th, 7th, or 10th day (d) of storage. Changes in fresh weight, titratable acidity, ascorbic acid and total phenol contents were markedly delayed by both treatments. Berries treated with 2 mM SA or 2% CaCl2 exhibited markedly better visual quality during the storage period. Considering the overall findings, this study revealed that postharvest SA or CaCl2 applications maintained the storage-life and conserved the valuable marketing features of blackberries over 10 d in cold storage, presumably due to their inhibitory effects on fruit senescence.

The effects of externally applied sodium nitroprusside on superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and catalase (CAT) antioxidant enzyme activities, nitric oxide (NO) levels have been investigated in salt stress resistant and sensitive sunflower plants. NaCl treatments and SNP treatments simultaneously with salt application (NaCl+SNP) were performed. SOD, GPx, APX and CAT antioxidant enzyme activities and NO levels showed differences in leaf tissues treated with 100 µM SNP, different concentrations of NaCl, and NaCl+SNP. SOD, GPx and APX enzyme activities were generally increased in sensitive variety, but decreased in tolerant variety. However, while general increase in CAT enzyme activity was determined in tolerant type, a reduction was established in sensitive type. An increase was determined in both types in NO levels. It is evident from these results that administration of NO donor SNP can cope with reactive oxygen species in both varieties. This study indicates that negative effects of salt stress on different sun flower varieties can be recovered by nitric oxide.

Sweet cherry is a vegetatively propagated, perennial plant with high level of heterozygosity and ancient breeding history. Therefore, it is necessary to keep, conserve and evaluate known genetic resources for future breeding programs and fruit production stability. In present, the utilization of DNA molecular genetic analyses is the best suitable method for evaluation of individual accessions, thus we eliminated duplications and characterized the genetic relationships. In our work, we used PCR primer combinations for 19 SSR and 2 EST-SSR loci for analyses of 123 current, old and local sweet cherry cultivars from Czech genetic resources of Research and Breeding Institute of Pomology in Holovousy. In total, 115 polymorphic fragments were amplified, which we used for hierarchical cluster analysis of genetic variability. The result dendrograms were divided into three main clusters and ten subgroups. Clustering corresponded to genealogical and geobotanical characteristics of individual accessions as breeding history of several known accessions.

Essential nutritional components are quantified in the study in addition to major antioxidants, carotenoids, phenols and flavonoids. Their antioxidant activities were also analyzed using DPPH, ABTS and hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging activities and by determining their iron reducing power. Results indicated that the highest quantity of nutritional and antioxidant components was obtained in red variety (4.63 mg/g ascorbic acid, 10.32 mg/g total carotenoid content, 61.50 mg/g total flavonoid content, 310.27 mg/g total phenolic content) followed by orange, yellow and green varieties. Similar trend was observed while analyzing their antioxidant activities by different methods. In studying correlation between components and antioxidant activity, a strong correlation was obtained for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total phenolic content (R2 = 0.722) and total carotenoid contents (R2 = 0.709), while moderate correlation was observed for ABTS radical scavenging activity with total flavonoid contents (R2 = 0.517) and ascorbic acid (R2 = 0.673).

In recent times, pomegranate has been one of Turkey’s most important commercial fruit crops for consumption and export. In this study, the chemical composition of pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) fruits grown in the central area of Bitlis province (Eastern Turkey) was investigated. For this purpose, total phenolic content, ascorbic acid content, total anthocyanin and antioxidant activity and minerals content were evaluated. The highest total phenolic contents were determined in 13BIT1 (6477.78 mg gallic acid equivalents 100 g–1 fresh matter). The highest ascorbic acid was determined in 13BIT2 of pomegranate genotype (60.78 mg 100 g–1). Radical scavenging activity (DPPH) were determined between 13BIT18 (78.15) to 13BIT1 (31.49). Total anthocyanin of genotypes was measured between 13BIT19 (156.03) to 13BIT17 (55.37), respectively. The highest mineral compositions of the pomegranate genotypes were 998.00% N, 301.00 mg 100 g–1 P, 1708.61 mg 100 g–1 K, 55.21 mg 100 g–1 Ca, 116.79 mg 100 g–1 Mg, 5.1 mg 100 g–1 Fe, 1.91 mg 100 g–1 Cu, 0.41 mg 100 g–1 Mn and 1.20 mg 100 g–1 Zn, respectively. The results indicate that pomegranate genotypes have an important value of health and nutrition for the human.

Seed priming is one of the potential physiological approaches to enhance the seed germination under the salinity stress. The present study examined the role of two seed priming molecules: salicylic acid (SA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), in enhancing the salt tolerance of lentil seeds at germination stage. Salinity stress caused significant decrease in germination percentage and primary root elongation. This decrease was associated with significant increase in lipid peroxidation and total lipid (TL) contents in embryonic axis. The catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxydase (GPOX) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities remained unchanged or decreased significantly under the influence of salt stress, in both embryonic axis and cotyledons. Starch mobilization was not affected by the salt stress. The two priming treatments effectively alleviated the negative effects of salinity stress. SA and H2O2 applications after dose optimization resulted in a significant enhancement of germination percentage and primary root elongation. No significant changes in starch, soluble sugars contents and SOD activity were detected following SA and H2O2 treatments. Seed priming treatments triggered the activities of GPOX and CAT and caused the reduction in lipid peroxidation, especially in embryonic axis. TL content and especially the fatty acid C18:3 increased after SA applications. Better performance under salt stress of primed lentil seeds was associated with lower lipid peroxidation, and activation of enzymatic antioxidative defense system. Obtained results confirm the potential for using SA and H2O2 to improve germination and plant growth under salt stress conditions.

A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied through seed priming and foliar spray on growth and yield of three okra cultivars grown under calcareous soils. The cultivars of Punjab Selection and Sabzpari produced significantly higher number of branches and leaves per plant, pod length and diameter and pod yield as compared to cv. Green ferry, while, cv. Punjab selection produced significantly greater number of flowers and pods per plant as compared to other two cultivars. Seed germination (%), plant height, and fruit set (%) were not affected by the cultivars. Among the PGR treatments, seed primed with GA3 resulted in significantly higher germination percentage and greater plant height at flowering. Seed priming and foliar spray with NAA and GA3 were effective in increasing the final plant height, number of branches, number of leaves, number of flowers and number of pods per plant and fruit set (%), fresh weight per pod and pod yield. However, pod diameter, pod moisture content and dry weight per pod were not influenced by the PGR treatments applied. These results suggested that the PGRs have great potential to improve seed germination, enhance growth and increase yield of okra cultivars under calcareous soils.
