This paper presents the issues of place and attachment to place. The aim of the article is to determine the level of knowledge among the academic community of the university building in which they study or work and its surrounding area, in the context of place attachment. The cognitive component – one of many aspects of identifying with a place – was examined. With limited knowledge about the building in which the study population spends time, calculated in months or years, it is difficult to determine place attachment, identification, or experience. The research method applied was a diagnostic survey, a questionnaire consisting of questions designed by the author. Both students and academics were surveyed. The results showed that students have limited knowledge of the building where they attend classes. The university building appears to be more of an anonymous non-place, without deeper symbolic or social meanings, than a place with which the academic community identifies itself.

Opis:
The article presents choosen author’s and co’authors results of researches of public spaces conducted in polish cities. The attention is focused on these city spaces which acquire the status of a place. Results of the researches show that this process concern especially central and historical city’s spaces and some recreational areas. The theoretical basis of the article are theories of public space as well as classical (Tuan, Libura) and contemporary (Massey, Castello) concepts of place. Contemporary concepts of place focus on the dynamics, negotiative and sometimes conflictuality of the processes of place creation. The consumer character of place is also included in such point of view. Such an interpretation means that typical non-places (Auge), eg shopping centers, can become places for some residents of contemporary cities.
W artykule zaprezentowane są wybrane wyniki autorskich i współautorskich badań nad przestrzeniami publicznymi polskich miast. Uwaga skoncentrowana zostanie na tych przestrzeniach miejskich, które nabywają status miejsca. Taka sytuacja, jak wskazują wyniki badań, dotyczy szczególnie centralnych i historycznych przestrzeni miejskich oraz atrakcyjnych terenów rekreacyjnych. W warstwie teoretycznej w artykule znajdą się odwołania zarówno do teorii miejskiej przestrzeni publicznej, jak i klasycznych (Tuan, Libura) oraz współczesnych (Massey, Castello) ujęć teorii miejsca. W tych ostatnich zwraca się uwagę na dynamikę, negocjacyjność, a czasem konfliktowość procesów tworzących miejsce. Nie pomija się także komercyjnego i konsumpcyjnego charakteru miejsca. Taka interpretacja powoduje, że typowe nie-miejsca (Augé), np. centra handlowe, mogą dla niektórych mieszkańców współczesnych miast stawać się miejscami.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań ankietowych, zmierzających do oceny poziomu wiedzy społeczności akademickiej o uczelni, w kontekście przywiązania do miejsca. Próbę zbadania komponentu poznawczego, jednego z wielu aspektów identyfikacji z miejscem, podjęto w celu określenia, czy uczelnia jest postrzegana przez studentów i pracowników naukowych jako anonimowe nie-miejsce. Wyniki sondażu diagnostycznego zostały uzupełnione definicjami i aktualnym stanem badań nad problematyką miejsca i przywiązania do miejsca. Zarówno w przypadku studentów, jak i pracowników wykazano ograniczoną wiedzę o uczelni, z którą grupy te związane są w okresach mierzonych w miesiącach lub latach. W przypadku pracowników naukowych prawidłowe odpowiedzi przeważały jedynie w pytaniach opierających się na informacjach organizacyjnych i proceduralnych, w przeciwieństwie do tych, które dotyczyły historii i aktualnych wydarzeń związanych z głównym gmachem uczelni i jego bezpośrednim otoczeniem. W świetle tych odpowiedzi uczelnia jawi się raczej jako anonimowe nie-miejsce, nieposiadające głębszych symbolicznych i społecznych znaczeń, niż miejsce, z którym społeczność akademicka się identyfikuje. Budynki uczelni, podobnie jak współczesne lotniska i dworce, stacje benzynowe, hotele itp. stają się w studenckich doświadczeniach z uczelnią bardzo podobne do siebie.
The article presents the results of the survey aimed at determining the level of knowledge of the academic community about university in the context of attachment to a place. In order to determine whether the university is perceived by students and academics as an anonymous non-place, the author examined the cognitive component, one of many aspects of place identity. The results of the surveys were supplemented with definitions and the current state of research on the place issues and attachment to the place. Both students and employees exhibited limited knowledge about the university at which they spend their time measured in months or years. In the case of academics, correct answers prevailed only in questions based on organisational and procedural information, as opposed to those regarding the history and current events related to the main building of the university and its closest surroundings. In the light of these answers, the university appears to be more like an anonymous non-place, without deeper symbolic and social meaning, than a place with which the academic community identifies itself and to which it is attached. The university buildings, like modern airports, stations, petrol stations, hotels, etc., are becoming very similar for the students in their experience with the university.

The author attempts to interpret Andrzej Stasiuk’s short story Miejsce, which was included in the new core curriculum of Polish language teaching in secondary schools. The aim of the article is to demonstrate that the theme of the place inscribed in Stasiuk’s work can be perfectly described thanks to the adoption of a hermeneutical mode of reading, which will not only emphasize the importance of the phenomenology of space inscribed in the interpreted text, but will also show young readers how Heidegger’s being in the place translates into building one’s own identity.

The article aims to show the issue of educational travels of noble youth in the modern era. The source is the correspondence of Jakub Dunin from his journeys around Europe in 1699–1703, addressed to father Franciszek Świętosław. The mentioned letters (stored in the National Archives in Krakow in the Tomkowicz Archive from Kobiernice) provide important information referring to the reasons for travelling, travel expenses and the companions. Particularly noteworthy are colorful descriptions of the social life lived in European manors. For example, the author visited Versailles of Louis XIV and provided a detailed description of various ceremonies and court entertainment. Foreign journeys posed an opportunity to learn about foreign cultures, political systems or armies. This encouraged nobility sons’ reflections which they shared with relatives back in Poland. As a result, the travel correspondence abounds in individual interpretations, for example, of the then political developments on the international arena. When confronted with facts, they add extra value to the publication.

Współczesne porty lotnicze, będące prężnymi ośrodkami wymiany handlowej, miejscami pracy i bezpośrednich spotkań coraz większej liczby ludzi, osiągają rozmiary wymagające spójnej koncepcji techniczno-ekonomicznej, architektonicznej i funkcjonalno-przestrzennej. Prestiżowa architektura terminali reprezentuje dynamikę i potencjał ekonomiczny lokalnych społeczności, a układy urbanistyczne kompleksów zabudowań lotniskowych coraz częściej świadomie nawiązują do form miejskich. Lotniska są jednak nadal postrzegane jako anonimowe nie-miejsca nieposiadające głębszych symbolicznych i społecznych znaczeń, gdzie ludzie obok siebie koegzystują, nie tworząc żadnej wspólnoty. Czy porty lotnicze istotnie są pozbawionymi wartości i własnej historii negatywnymi nie-miejscami, czy też miejscami nowego typu, wymagającymi właściwego odczytania ich utajonych społecznych sensów i znaczeń w kontekście globalnych procesów urbanizacyjnych? Koncepcja nie-miejsc antropologa Marca Augé, której socjologowie przeciwstawiają teorię atmosfer filozofa-estetyka Gernota Böhmego, czy teoria obrazu miasta Kevina Lyncha wspierająca argumentację analityków procesów ekonomicznych airport city i aerotropolis pokazują, że lotnisko jako społeczno-przestrzenny fenomen wymaga interdyscyplinarnej analizy. Badacze różnych specjalności poszukują teoretycznych narzędzi, również w obszarze estetyki i teorii architektury, zdolnych do wyjaśniania złożonych zjawisk współczesności.
Contemporary airports, which are bustling commercial centres, workplaces and locations where ever-growing numbers of people meet face-to-face, have grown to such sizes that they require a consistent technical and economic, architectural as well as functional and spatial concept. The impressive architecture of airport terminals represents the dynamism and economic potential of local communities while urban layouts are more and more frequently deliberately designed to evoke urban forms. However, airports continue to be perceived as anonymous non-places, devoid of any deeper symbolic and social meanings, where people just co-exist next to one another, but do not form a community. Are airports really negative non-places devoid of any value and their own history or are they places of a new type requiring that their hidden social meanings and senses be properly read in the context of global urbanisation processes? The anthropologist Marc Augé’s concept of non-places, which sociologists contrast with the theory of atmospheres propounded by the philosopher and aesthetician Gernot Böhme’s, or Kevin Lynch’s theory of the image of the city supporting arguments put forward by airport city and aerotropolis economic process analysts, demonstrate that the airport as a social and spatial phenomenon calls for an interdisciplinary analysis. Researchers from various disciplines are looking for theoretical tools, also within the field of aesthetics and architectural theory, that can explain complex phenomena of contemporary times.

Otaczające nas krajobrazy ulegają ciągłym zmianom, w wyniku naturalnych procesów (dnia i nocy, pejzaż zimowy i letni, krajobraz po burzy) lub ludzkiej działalności (miast i wsi czy krajobraz poprzemysłowy, pofabryczny, pokopalniany). W ciągłym procesie przemian zaczynamy otaczać się coraz częściej przestrzeniami opisywanymi jako niczyje, niewarte i straszne. Takie przestrzenie interpretowane często jako utracone, to obszary o podrzędnej jakości, niejasnym modelu użytkowania, miejsca chaosu i degradacji tradycyjnych wartości przestrzeni. Pojawiają się wszędzie tam, gdzie podział własności jest mało czytelny lub pomiędzy przestrzeniami pewnych kontroli. Przestrzenie zawsze do kogoś przynależą, są własnością prywatna lub wspólną. Rozważania dotyczą miejsc interpretowanych nie jako statyczny obszar, a element ciągłego i postępującego procesu transformacji, ulegającego niekończącym się dynamicznym zmianom. Wynikiem jest trwała relacja i zależności przestrzeni z człowiekiem odbiorcą. Miejsca ulegają ewolucji, która uwzględnia zmienne potrzeby, ograniczenia i możliwości użytkowników. W treści rozważań mowa jest o miejscach scalanych, dzielonych, inspirujących i chimerycznych. Przytaczane są także przykłady miejsc utraconych i oswojonych przez człowieka.
The surrounding landscapes are constantly changing as a result of natural processes (day and night, winter and summer landscape, stormy landscape) or human activities (cities and rural areas, post-industrial, post-industrial, post-industrial landscapes). In the constant process of transformation we begin to encircle more and more spaces, described as nobody, worthless and terrible. Such spaces often interpreted are as lost or areas of subordinate quality, obscure model of use as chaos place and degradation of traditional values of space. They appear everywhere where the division of property is not easily readable or between spaces of certain controls. Between private and shared property. Like a common person and nobody, neglected. Owner appears in theory in papers but not here. He does not care. Lost spaces are unnoticed. In many cases uncomfortable in others underestimated. The space abandoned by man or created for its needed, aesthetic reception or individual sensations. On the other hand the space that affects man on his attitude, thinking and acting. Since they accompany us every day, becoming an element of reality, we should interpret them, bring natural meaning to rediscover the purpose of their existence. Topics and causes of the origin or process of transformation of such places – lost places is a lot. The essence remains their value they present which is worth to keeping during the design activities. Their authenticity and peculiarity. The diversity and potential and manner of shaping such places, their complexity and the phenomenon hidden in their atmosphere have been the subject of the following considerations. Considerations over an interpreted place are not as static but as an element of the continuous and progressive process of transformation. Subject to endless dynamic changes, permanent relations and dependence on the recipient. Sites evolving evolution which account changing needs, constraints and capabilities of users. Places which are merged, shared, inspirational and chimeric. Places lost and tamed by man.

Urban creativity tends to be defined as a driving force of the ongoing changes in modern cities. While being a formally neutral term, the “creative,” in practice usually identifies all “good” sides of processes of urban transformations, especially those concerning the rise of spaces for sensual experiencing. The Creative City makes then a certain promise of aesthetic inclusion, enhanced participation, and autonomy for its citizens and visitors. However, the Creative City itself is neither an autonomous concept, nor the self-sufficient urban entity, but is entangled in economic, organizational, and social aspects of urban performance. All this makes us ask, is its promise trustworthy or rather empty?

The aim of the present article is to analyze the relationship between the city and the protagonists of Giuseppe Culicchia’s texts. The methodological perspective is that of cultural anthropology, in particular the concept of mente locale, discussed by Franco La Cecla. Mente locale, as a relationship between space and human mind, is vital in the act of getting lost in space (perdersi), which leads to getting to know it (orientarsi) and finally initiating the profound relationship based on emotivity. Culicchia’s texts are set in Turin, and the study points out the different ways of perception of the city. The analyzed texts represents the gradual acquisition of knowledge about the city that corresponds to the theoretical thesis that is how the anthropology of space and place illustrates the conceptual and material dimensions of space which is central to the production of social life, bringing classics of cultural anthropology together with new theoretical approaches.
