Opis:
Introduction: In the literature on the problem of social support, besides family sources of support, (husband, wife, children, parents, siblings, relatives), a role of friends, acquaintances and neighbors is emphasized. Purpose: To assess types and level of support that parents receive from specific social groups. Materials and methods: The study included 108 mothers and 108 fathers of intellectually disabled children. We used the original questionnaire and the standardized scale of Social Support by KmiecikBaran. Results: There were differences between the parents in emotional support (standard deviation 3.519), the lowest in informative support (deviation 2.744). General support was poor in the opinion of 34.6% of the parents. Average institutional support related to 42.9% of the parents, strong evaluative support – 37.1% and strong emotional support – 41%. The parents received the strongest informative, institutional, evaluative and emotional support from nurses and physicians. Spouses of the examined gave them poor informative, emotional and institutional support and average evaluative support. Statistically, the fathers received significantly stronger evaluative and emotional support – by more than one point, and by more than 3 points in case of general support than mothers. Conclusions: The parents received average social support, however, it was below the average for the Polish adult population. The spouses gave them poor informative, emotional and institutional support and average evaluative support; teachers, physicians and nurses – average support in all categories, however, in case of the two latter – institutional and evaluative support was close to the above-average values. The fathers enjoyed moderately stronger evaluative, emotional and general support from teachers, physicians and nurses than mothers.

child's maturity
Opis:
The religious freedom of a child was first proclaimed in secular law in 1989, when the UN General Assembly created the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The benefits that a child derives from this convention are subject to the degree of the child's maturity. He or she was able to benefit from their religious freedom only as a member of a church or religious group – before the Convention was ratified by Polish legislators. The Convention states that the child is the subject of religious freedom due to self-respect. In Polish legislation, the child's freedom correlates with their parents' rights. The parents are given the right to raise their children in accordance with their beliefs. However, some oversights have been made by the legislators. It is not explained how to combine children's needs with the needs of their parents in case there are some conflicts regarding religious freedom.

In this paper I analyze the phenomenon of parents’ managing the stigma of their child’s disability. Using Erving Goffman’s concept of stigma, I point to its usefulness in understanding the management of stigma by parents of children with intellectual disability. I also stress the usefulness of the category of stigma in the context of how the parents work on their identity. The results of research indicate that the parents of children with a disability live with a sense of stigma in regard to their children. Parents adopt various ways of managing this stigma in connection with whether their child’s disability is visible or not. Managing stigma may involve revealing or concealing a child’s disability. In the research, qualitative techniques were used, with special emphasis on an unstructured interview. Data analysis was performed in accordance with the procedures of grounded theory.

The article is devoted to the phenomenon of sharenting, meaning the sharing of content about their children by parents on the internet. Its emergence is associated with the development and popularization of social media, which have become an integral part of the modern world. A part of society, especially young people, can see sharenting as one of the dimensions of modern parenting. On the other hand, the phenomenon of parents publishing children’s images and other information about them online has many potential negative consequences. The article presents the essence and scale of sharenting as well as its causes and consequences. The author attempted to answer the question: should sharenting be viewed in terms of a threat to children’s privacy or as one of the sides of modern parenting? The article points out that sharenting is one of the significant problems of the current reality, in which considerable activity of parents is observed in social media. It also suggests some measures that could reduce the negative effects of this phenomenon.

The study aimed to determine the relationship between parents’ family aspirations towards their children with disabilities and selected parental psychosocial resources, such as self-image, self-perception, perceived social support, and styles of coping with stress. The instruments included the Parental Aspirations Questionnaire by Kirenko (2012), The Tennessee Self Concept Scale by Fitts (1965), The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire by Norbeck (1984), and Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations by Endler and Parker (1999). 361 mothers and fathers bringing up children with physical, sensory, and intellectual disabilities participated in the study. The results suggest a positive role of adaptive competences, such as adaptive coping, positive properties of self-image, as well as the negative role of maladaptive competencies such as self-criticism in mothers and fathers. Neither the positive contribution of social support nor the negative role of avoidance-oriented coping in fathers has been confirmed. Parental aspirations are part of adaptation to living with a child with a disability and will be important to support parents in recognizing the child’s potential correctly and strengthening it at all stages of development until adulthood.

Opis:
The text takes up the problem of the role of names in human life. The author refers to the identifying and ordering role of each person’s name in legal relations; she recognizes that the surname is a personal right and, moreover, that it is part of the marital status disclosed in marital status records. The surname also indicates the particular familylegal relationship of a person, both in terms of being married and being descended from certain parents. The text relates first of all to the method of establishing the surname for a child coming from spouses, and then to the child’s situation in the face of their parents’ divorce and of using the possibility of returning to the surname before marriage. The choice of the child’s name is not arbitrary. The Act regulates in detail the method and timing of selecting a child’s name. As a rule, in the case of a spouse’s child, the child’s surname remains associated with the presumption of descent from the mother’s husband. The article goes on to deal with the issue of the surname being changed by the parents following a divorce and the lack of influence of this decision on a change in the child’s surname. When a parent decides to return to their pre-marriage surname, they exercise their own right, the effects of which do not extend to the child. The author analyzes the impact of changing the parent’s surname in connection with entering into a new marriage, as well as the admissibility of changing the surname under administrative procedure, extending these effects to the situation of the minor’s surname. The text indicates a number of factors from which the law makes it possible to change a child’s surname. In the discussion, the author comes to the conclusion that changing a surname in the administrative mode remains independent of the situations indicated in the Family Code, which means that it should take place only exceptionally and solely for important reasons.

The article deals with the field of gifted children, who are considerably neglected from the point of view of programmatic and legislative approaches in the field of education in the Republic of Slovenia. The substantive research focus is therefore mainly on understanding and detailing the role of parents in discovering characteristics of potential giftedness and the role that parents have in promoting the child’s potential in one of the areas of giftedness. In the empirical part of the paper, we examined the extent to which parents perceive potential giftedness in their preschool children and whether they encourage them in developing their potential in different areas of giftedness. We used a descriptive, noncausal, and nonexperimental method. The survey sample included 201 parents of preschool children in the developmental period of early childhood from 4 to 6 years. Data were obtained using a questionnaire developed based on Giftedness Rating Scale to identify gifted children in elementary school and adapted to survey participants. Based on the established hypotheses, we reviewed the differences in the perception and promotion of different areas of potential giftedness in relation to the child’s gender and age, the parents’ educational level, and the outstanding strong area subjectively assessed by the parents. We also examined the relationship between the variables of perception and promotion of potential giftedness. The results of the study are relevant to the field of potentially gifted preschool children and the further recognition and promotion of their potential in kindergarten and in the family.

Opis:
Background. Deletion syndrome 22q11.2 is a frequently occurring genetic disorder effecting not only malfunctions of the structure and function of many organs and systems, but also a number of psycho-social problems in patients of all ages. Objectives. The aim of the study was the evaluation of psycho-social problems experienced by people with confirmed 22q11DS observed by their parents/caregivers. Material and methods. A group of 32 parents’/caregivers’ children with 22q11DS diagnosis (confirmed by FISH or MLPA analysis) were examined. The age of patients at the moment of examination was from 3 months to 23 years. To identify the most frequent problems a questionnaire survey was used with the use of the authors’ questionnaire. Results. On the basis of the acquired data analysis it was stated that the most frequent problems in children reported by the questioned parents/caregivers were problems with speech development, problems with focusing attention, problem in relations with peers, and school difficulties. The questioned parents also emphasized excessive anxiety of the children and frequent behavior disorders. Moreover, many parents are concerned with their children’s adult lives, and emphasize the necessity of professional support (including psychological) in different stages of the sick child’s upbringing. Conclusions. Patients with 22q11DS experience many psychological and social problems and require, with their families, psychological support in different stages of life. The child’s condition, in many parents’ opinion, is a factor significantly influencing functioning in life and determining the occurrence of problems in the future. The task of primary care physicians is not only to identify patients suspected of 22q11DS and to lead them to genetic diagnostics, but also to provide support to the patients and their families in different stages of life in cooperation with many other specialists.

This paper aims at presenting selected elements that constitute the relationship between professionals (physicians) and an ill child as well as the child’s parents. The discussion is based on the following assumption: All actions undertaken when a child is ill should be performed with two subjects participating in them: the child and the child’s parents, because the exclusion of one of them disturbs the fulfillment of specific goals and tasks. In interactions with specialists, intelligible tripartite communication is undoubtedly of key importance since the course and final outcome of treatment depend on appropriate cooperation between all subjects involved (and in the case of a small child, this includes parents).
