Opis:: Theis article presents the views and opinions expressed in two London periodicals published in the 1950s and 1960s by Polish students living in exile, namely Życie Akademickie and Kontynenty, focusing on the problem of preservation of “Polishness” among Polish emigrants of the younger generation. In the first part of the text, the views presented, include those of the members of the older generation of emigrants and refugees (e.g. Czesław Miłosz or Witold Gombrowicz), giving advice to the young, as well as of the young themselves (e.g. Wiktor Poznański or Wojciech Gniatczyński). The second part of the article refers to the notion of patriotism and the problem of national vices, which were also subject to a discussion which went on in the émigré press. The aim of the article is to illustrate the discrepancies between the attitudes of two – or even three – generations of Polish emigrants, concerning the issue of Polish national identity.

Opis:: The article presents an analysis of the relationship between the degree of declared religiosity and the sense of national identity among Poles. By adopting the perspective of the sociology of nation and drawing on its achievements, it aims to answer two questions: what is the place of Catholicism in the socially defined criteria of belonging to Polishness, and determine the extent to which the degree of declared religiosity influences the sense of national identity in Poles. Empirical data for the analysis originates from representative polls on the social criteria of Polishness conducted by CBOS and Kantar Public (formerly OBOP, TNS) between 1988 and 2018. In theoretical terms, the study draws on the model of public opinion proposed by Zbigniew Bokszański to conceptualize and research collective national identity. The conducted analysis demonstrates for instance that the Catholic faith is at the bottom of the hierarchy of social criteria of Polishness; it also reveals an increasingly conspicuous polarization of attitudes of people admitting varying degrees of religiosity towards the preferred model of national identity.

Opis:: Niniejszy artykuł jest owocem trwających ponad 10 lat badań nad twórczością polskiego, mało znanego kompozytora Ottona Mieczysława Żukowskiego (1867–1942). W tym czasie udało się zebrać wiele nieznanych jego utworów, przechowywanych między innymi w archiwum prywatnym wnuczki kompozytora i w Bibliotece Naukowej we Lwowie. Udało się również ustalić autorstwo innych utworów Żukowskiego, a w niektórych przypadkach autorstwo to zakwestionować. Ponadto na podstawie państwowych dokumentów do publicznej wiadomości podano właściwą datę śmierci kompozytora wobec błędnie podawanej przez liczne słowniki i encyklopedie. Prezentowany artykuł jest pierwszą próbą uporządkowanej prezentacji twórczości tak muzycznej, jak i publicystycznej Ottona Mieczysława Żukowskiego według stanu wiedzy autora na 2018 rok.
The following article is the outcome of more than 10 years of study of the works of the little-known Polish composer Otton Mieczysław Żukowski (1867–1942). During those ten years, many of his unknown songs, kept mainly in the private records of the composer’s granddaughter and in the Lviv National Scientific Library, were collected. Also, the authorship of other of Żukowski’s songs was established, while in other cases it was possible to question this authorship. Furthermore, based on the national documents, the correct date of the composer’s death was revealed to the public, correcting the wrong date given by various dictionaries and encyclopedias. The article is the first attempt at an organized presentation of the musical as well as publishing work of Otton Mieczysław Żukowski, according to the author’s knowledge as of 2018.

Opis:: The study deals with the problem of the significance of history and history attributed to contemporary Polish society in the context of national identity. On the basis of representative surveys from recent years, the author tries to answer the following questions: To what extent Poles are interested in the history of their own country? How much is the history of the national community the source of pride or shame? To what extent is knowledge of history in postulated patriotic attitudes and is at all an important criterion for recognizing someone as a Pole? The conducted analysis leads to the conclusion that the common past is one of the key elements of the contemporary national identity of Poles.
Opracowanie podejmuje problem znaczenia przypisywanego przeszłości i historii przez współczesne społeczeństwo polskie w kontekście tożsamości narodowej. Na podstawie reprezentatywnych badań sondażowych z ostatnich lat autor stara się odpowiedzieć na pytania: W jakim stopniu Polacy interesują się historią własnego kraju? Na ile dzieje własnej wspólnoty narodowej są źródłem dumy bądź wstydu? W jakim stopniu znajomość historii mieści się w postulowanych postawach patriotycznych i w ogóle stanowi istotne kryterium uznania kogoś za Polaka? Przeprowadzona analiza prowadzi do konkluzji, że wspólna przeszłość jest jednym z kluczowych elementów współczesnej tożsamości narodowej Polaków.

Opis:: Who am I? Meanders of National Identity on the Example of the Fate of an Ethnic Pole Ivan Iosifovich Osinsky. The article presents the profile of an ethnic Pole Ivan Iosifovich Osinskiy, professor at Buryatia State University. It presents the process of formation of his national identity, the influence of individual elements (family, local community, professional environment, among others) on its formation. Emphasising Osinski’s sense of national identification is based on the model of the triad of identity: inherited, acquired, presented.
Kim jestem? Meandry tożsamości narodowej na przykładzie losów etnicznego Polaka Ivana Iosifovicha Osińskiego. Artykuł przedstawia sylwetkę etnicznego Polaka Ivana Iosifovicha Osinskiego, profesora Buriackiego Uniwersytetu Państwowego. Prezentuje proces tworzenia się jego tożsamości narodowej, wpływ poszczególnych elementów (między innymi rodziny, społeczności lokalnej, środowiska zawodowego) na jej kształtowanie. Podkreślanie poczucia identyfikacji narodowej Osińskiego oparto na modelu triady tożsamości: dziedziczonej, nabywanej, prezentowanej.

Opis:: Der Artikel beschäftigt sich mit dem Thema Patriotismus in polnischen Einwandererfamilien im Kontext soziokultureller Verhältnisse in Deutschland. Ziel der Studie war es, den in Familien kultivierten Patriotismus kennenzulernen und die Frage zu beantworten: Handelt es sich um einen Wert, der die Wahrung der nationalen Identität ermöglicht? In dem Artikel verwendete man die Ergebnisse einer soziologischen Studie (Umfrage), die bei der polnischen Mission in Deutschland durchgeführt wurde. Das zusammengetragene bibliografische Material wurde für die kritische Analyse der Studie verwendet. Basierend auf den Forschungsergebnissen stellt man fest, dass der polnische Patriotismus, der von der deutschen Sozialkultur und Religion unter Berücksichtigung der herkömmlichen Umstände verifiziert wurde, bewahrt seine Authentizität und schützt vor nationalistischen Einstellungen. Daher bleibt der Zusammenschluss von Glauben und Polentum tief im polnischen Patriotismus verwurzelt, das authentische und universelle Erbe, das in polnischen Familien an nachfolgende Generationen weitergegeben wurde, vertretend. Aufgrund der durchgeführten Untersuchungen lässt sich bestätigen, dass Patriotismus in polnischen Familien in Deutschland gepflegt wird. Patriotismus sollte vor allem in der Familie eingeimpft werden, deswegen sollten Eltern die religiösen (Glaubenserziehung) und nationalen Traditionen (polnische Bräuche und Kultur) verbinden.
The article discusses the subject of patriotism within Polish immigrant families in the context of socio-cultural conditions in Germany. The aim of the research was to learn about the patriotism cultivated within families and to answer the question: does it is a value and enables retaining national identity? The article uses the results of a sociological survey conducted in the Polish Mission in Germany. The collected bibliographic material was used for their critical analysis. Based on the results of the research, it be concluded that Polish patriotism, which has been verified by German social-cultural along with religious and relating to customs circumstances, preserves its genuineness and protects against nationalistic attitudes. Hence, combination of faith and Polishness remains deeply ingrained in Polish patriotism, representing authentic and universal heritage passed within the Polish families onto the next generations. Based on research done it could be confirmed that patriotism is cultivated within Polish families in German. Patriotism should be primary instilled within family, thus parents shall combine both religious (education in faith) and national (culture and Polish customs) traditions.

Opis:: Celem prezentowanego szkicu jest dostrzeżenie i wyróżnienie bardzo ważnego nurtu w polskiej powojennej prozie emigracyjnej. Nurt „powrotu do małych ojczyzn”, bardzo istotny w polskiej prozie powojennej, zaowocował wieloma dziełami wspomnieniowymi. Najważniejsze z nich poświęcone zostały ziemiom ukraińskim i białoruskim. Wspomnienia i powieści na temat życia na ziemiach białoruskich włączane są zwykle do nurtu litewskiego z powodu ich historycznej przynależności do Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego. Prezentowany szkic stanowi próbę ustanowienia właściwej hierarchii. Autorowi tekstu zależy na oddaniu ważności kultury białoruskiej dla polskiej literatury emigracyjnej, ale także na ujawnieniu budzenia się białoruskiej tożsamości narodowej. Albowiem w nurcie białoruskim napięcie między polskością i białorosyjskością odgrywa ważną rolę. I ten aspekt nie może zaginąć w refleksjach nad literackimi wspomnieniami polskiego życia na ziemiach białoruskich.
The aim of this paper is to distinguish an important trend of memoir literature in the Polish emigration prose. The trend of „returning to small homelands”, very important in the post-war Polish literature, resulted in many memoirs. The most important works were devoted to the lands of Ukraina and Belarusia. However, memories and novels devoted to life in the Belorussian territories usually are included in the Lithuanian trend because of their historic affiliation to the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The presented paper is an attempt to establish the proper hierarchy. The author of the text is interested in devoting the importance of the Belarusian culture to the Polish emigration literature, he is also interested in revealing the awakening of the Belarusian national identity. For the tension between Polishness and Belarusianness plays an important role in the Belarusian trend. And this aspect cannot be lost in reflections on the literary memories of Polish life in the Belorussian territories.

Opis:: Prezentowany artykuł przybliża sześć pieśni do Matki Bożej Częstochowskiej, pochodzących ze Zbioru pieśni nabożnych katolickich do użytku kościelnego i domowego, który został opublikowany w 1871 roku. W warstwie semantycznej pieśni te ukazują głębokie powiązanie postawy religijnej, katolickiej, ze sprawami narodowymi, polskimi. Pątnicy wykonujący te utwory przedstawiali bowiem swe intencje Matce Najświętszej, prosząc o pomyślność dla nieobecnej na mapach Europy Polski, o jej niepodległość, a także o spokojne, szczęśliwe życie osobiste.
The presented study describes six songs devoted to the Holy Mother of Częstochowa, from the Collection of Religious Catholic Songs to Be Sung in Church or at Home which was published in 1871. In the semantic layer, these songs show a strong relation between the religious Catholic attitude and Polish national matters. The pilgrims, while singing these songs, committed their intentions to the Holy Mother, praying for the prosperity of Poland, which did not exist on the maps of Europe, for its independence and also for their peaceful and happy personal life.
