The author of the article presents the concept of experience and experiencing in the field of Polonistic education. According to the scholar, Hans¬ Georg Gadamer’s philosophical her-meneutics can serve as an inspiring context in research and educational work of a teacher. Gadamer’s hermeneutics has been one of the influential ideas in philosophy and social sci-ences in recent years. The type of experience presented by the philosopher, that is more like a meeting, a talk than only a live stream, and whose task is to activate and rationalize what is primary in the process of common experiencing the world, can be used in school education in many ways.

The article Facets of Transfictionality delivers a concise analysis of the newly-introduced narratological concept of “transfictionality” (put forward by Richard Saint-Gelais in the early 2000s). The author discusses the phenomenon as emerging on the border between the text-centred poetics of classical narratology and the world-centred poetics of postclassical narratology by use of Jan-Noël Thon’s and Marie-Laure Ryan’s project of “media-conscious narratology”. Defined as such, transfictionality allows the contemporary phenomena of retelling or cross-over to be described without the necessity of reproducing fan-made concepts and terms of such ilk, and instead rooting them in established theoretical constructs, such as narrative metalepsis. Consequently, the article illustrates the postclassical theory of narrative and the theory of literature with examples more common to media studies, with the aim being to emphasise Ryan’s thesis that transmediality is only a specific case of transfictionality, and that the latter is a far older and better acknowledged concept what is generally understood as the theory of fiction. Moreover, the text follows up on Saint-Gelais’ inspirations derived from Umberto Eco’s cultural semiotics and proposes to introduce an Eco-inspired concept of “xeno-encyclopaedic competence” in order to determine a specific recipient’s competence that allows them to move across not only media or texts but also imaginary worlds, which consequently become their fictional habitats.

Time travel is one of the most popular themes in science fiction. Usually it is discussed from a perspective of technological and scientific possibilities for the realization of fantastic visions. Researchers focus on logical paradoxes implied by traveling back in time. The author of this article, inspired by David Wittenberg’s Time Travel: The Popular Philosophy of Narrative, draws attention to metanarrative functions of time travel theme, which becomes a challenge for writers and narrative techniques.

The article investigates the structure of romance and grief narrative included in Bobbie Ann Mason’s “Shiloh,” on the basis of Patrick C. Hogan’s th eory of literary universals and his work on aff ective narratology. Following Hogan, I argue that emotions are deeply embedded in stories and that stories are typically designed so as to manipulate the aff ective responses of their readers. I will focus on the way the story depicts prototypical stages of romance and grief and where it deviates from universal narratives involving concerning grief, separation, attachment, and romantic love, arguing that the aff ective and aesthetic potential of the story lies precisely in where it departs from these prototypical narratives. At the same time, I shall speculate on how discourse organization manipulates the formation of aff ective schemata and empathic alignment in readers.

Posługując się tematyką sentymentu odsłaniamy kontrast między pisarstwem Milana Kundery i Bohumila Hrabala, przy czym odwracamy powszechnie przyjęte charakterystyki. Chociaż Kunderze przyczepia się etykietkę autora cynicznego, nieromantycznego, antysentymentalnego, Hrabal zaś bywa klasyfikowany jako autor wrażliwego zrozumienia, to jednak przez tematykę domu można pokazać, że jest właściwie odwrotnie. Argumenty znajdujemy na poziomie écriture: Pisanie Kundery odznacza się dystynktywnością, znaczeniowym dookreśleniem i specyficzną wewnętrzną fokalizacją. Tymi rysami wpisuje się w tematykę potępienia, renegacji, polaryzacji alternatywy dom – obczyzna. Każdy z autorów proponuje inną odpowiedź na pytanie o tęsknotę za domem: Hrabal stosuje figurę cynicznie akceptowanej bezdomności, podczas gdy u Kundery znajdujemy tłumiony sentyment, z którego wywiera tęsknota za domem.
By means of using the topic of sentiment, the contrast between the writing of Milan Kundera and Bohumil Hrabal is shown. All the typically acknowledged characteristics are reversed. Although Kundera is assigned a label of a cynical, unromantic and antisentimental author and Hrabal is often classified as an author of sensitive understanding, it is through the topic of the home that the reversed can be shown. The arguments can be found on the level of écriture: Kundera’s writing is distinctive, semantically detailed and possesses internal focalisation. These characteristics allow him to enter the topic of condemnation, renegation and the polarisation of the alternative between the home and the foreign. Each of the authors proposes a different answer to the question on homelessness: Hrabal uses the figure of cynically accepted homelessness whereas Kundera a suppressed sentiment which emanates with homelessness.

Artykuł stanowi wprowadzenie do feministycznej narratologii filmowej: zarysowuje jej cele i wyzwania, wymienia narzędzia, nakreśla wstępnie możliwości operacjonalizacji i mapuje użyteczność analityczną. Feministyczna narratologia filmowa rozumiana jest tutaj jako subdyscyplina narratologii badająca zarówno narracje tworzone przez kobiety, jak i narracje o kobietach. Podkreślony jest jej aspekt metakrytyczny i rewizjonistyczny jako refleksji służącej zdemaskowaniu złudnego (męskiego) uniwersalizmu w tradycyjnych i strukturalistycznych propozycjach teorii opowiadania. Narratologia feministyczna osadzona zostaje w kontekście innych narratologii, przede wszystkim korporalnej (Punday, Stańczyk), naturalnej (Fludernik), kognitywnej (Bordwell, Branigan), transmedialnej i postklasycznej (Herman). Jedną z głównych kategorii stosowanych w tekście jest pojęcie doświadczeniowości (Fludernik), zgodnie z którym narracja jest w stanie reprodukować rzeczywiste ludzkie doświadczenia.
The article serves as an introduction to feminist film narratology, outlining its goals, challenges, analytical tools, and the initial operationalization and analytical utility. Feminist film narratology is understood as a sub-discipline of narratology which concerns both narratives created by women and narratives on women. The metacritical and revisionist aspect of feminist film narratology is emphasized as a critical reflection serving to expose the illusory (male) universalism in traditional and structuralist propositions of narrative theory. Feminist film narratology is set in the context of other variations of narratology, primarily: corporeal (Punday, Stańczyk), natural (Fludernik), cognitive (Bordwell, Branigan), transmedial, and postclassical (Herman). One of the main categories used in the text is the concept of experientiality (Fludernik), according to which the narrative is capable of reproducing actual human experiences. This includes specifically women’s experiences related to socio-cultural inequality and bodily affect.

The article uses narrative techniques to explore the role of a fact in literary works. A. Adamovich’s autobiographical novel “Vixi” that serves as illustrative material has been analyzed. The purpose of the article is to examine a literary work at several textual levels: “event – naration – discourse”, “events in the novel – historical context (internal and external chronotope)”, the relationship of “author – narator – reader”. It is argued that the fact in the process of a narrative story cannot remain unchanged – a subjective interpretation of the writer expressed by narrator’s words changes it explicitly. It is emphasized that the fact can be used as a trigger for deploying the main action or changing the style of writing. For A. Adamovich self-reflection as the way of understanding reality is a means to create the world model which represents clear polarization.

We present a framework of story beats, defined as microunits of dramatic action, as a tool for the ludonarrative analysis of videogames. First, we explain the Goal - Action - Reaction - Outcome model of the story beat. Then, we present six types of story beats, Action, Interaction, Inaction, Mental, Emotion, and Sensory, providing videogame examples for each category. In the second half of the paper, we contextualise this framework in the classic game studies theory of videogame narrative and player action: unit operations, gamic action, anatomy of choice, and game design patterns, wrapping it up in the most recent trends in cognitive narratology. Ultimately, we present the story beat as a ludonarrative unit, working simultaneously as a ‘unit operation’ in the study of games as systems, and as a microunit of character action in narrative analysis. The conclusion outlines prospective directions for using story beats in formal, experiential, and cultural game research.

Celem artykułu jest opisanie i sproblematyzowanie fenomenu wstecznej narracji filmowej. Filmy takie jak Happy End, Zdrada, Dwie przyjaciółki, Miętowy cukierek, Memento, 5x2 czy Nieodwracalne w różny sposób funkcjonalizują chwyt odwróconej chronologii sekwencji. Jego rolą jest nie tylko stymulowanie aktywności odbiorczej, lecz także redefinicja, czy też dekonstrukcja konwencji gatunkowych oraz form identyfikacji widza z bohaterem. Nowatorstwo strukturalne i samozwrotność tych filmów sprawiają, że ich interpretacja musi uwzględniać także fikcyjne doświadczenie czasowe (Ricoeur). Autorka bada wsteczną narrację z perspektywy poetyki historycznej i form recepcji. Artykuł zawiera analizę sposobów, w jakie odwrócona chronologia sekwencji przedstawia kwestie epistemologiczne oraz opozycję przyszłości i przeszłości. Kontekstem analitycznym artykułu są narzędzia wypracowane przez narratologię (Mieke Bal) i teorię neoformalno-kognitywną.
The aim of the article is to describe and problematize the phenomenon of reverse film narration. Films such as Happy End, Betrayal, Two Friends, Peppermint candy, Memento, 5x2 or Irreversible use the technique of the reverse sequence of events in different ways. Its role is not only the stimulation of the reception by the audience, but also a redefinition, or perhaps deconstruction of genre conventions and forms of viewer’s identifications with the protagonist. The structural innovation and self reflexivity of these films mean that their interpretation must also consider fictitious experience of time (Ricoeur). The author reflects on reverse narrative from the perspective of historical poetics and forms of reception. The article contains an analysis of ways in which reverse sequence chronology presents epistemological matters and the opposition between the future and the past. The analytical context for the article is provided by the tools developed in narratology (Mieke Bal) and neoformal-cognitive theory.

The object of our deliberations is structuralism in literary studies, whose beginnings in Poland can be traced back to the thirties of the 20th century. It was developing at two centres at the time: at the Stefan Batory University in Vilnius, around Professor Manfred Kridl, and at the University of Warsaw. Structuralism was reborn in Poland in the sixties and it impacted all of literary studies; its main centres were: the Institute of Literary Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Focusing on the analysis of literary systems, it combined them with theory of text and interpretation of individual works, emphasizing their broadly understood linguistic, discursive and rhetorical properties. In the culmination stage of its advancement, it tackled the fundamental problems of our discipline, including those that were only starting to emerge, such as reception of literary works as intended by its structural properties, or intertextuality. Structuralism had (and still has) a strong impact on the entirety of literary studies in Poland. It also became a sphere of reference for researchers of the younger generation, who prefer newer methodological tendencies.

In the article I analyse different types of reading Henryk Sienkiewicz’s various historical characters at school. The reading of Sienkiewicz’s works is frequently too general and schematic, therefore I suggest an attempt to read this writer with the use of poststructural theories. Marie-Claire Blais seeks to innovate, throughout her career, her 'antimimétique' writing. Her extensive pentalogy - Soifs (1995), Dans la foudre et la lumière (2001), Augustino et le choeur de la destruction (2005), Naissance de Rebecca à l’ère des tourments (2008), Mai au bal des prédateurs (2010) – offers a complex existential questioning of the actual situation of the man. The problem of Evil and Good, which is in the heart of questions and answers, is treated with an original narration, transforming Virginia Woolf’s stream of consciousness. This innovation, however, is rooted in the tradition, namely its baroque poetics and its community orientation, both attached to the affirmation / negation of the catholic heritage that marked Quebec.

Autorka koncentruje się na „znaczących ujęciach” w popularnym (w opozycji do bieguna heavy weight) wariancie puzzle films. Ujęcie jest identyfikowane jako znaczące, jeśli pełni uprzywilejowaną rolę w strukturze tekstu filmowego. Aby uchwycić znaczenie (w aspekcie wytwarzania sensów) analizowanego ujęcia, autorka skupia się na jego dwóch fundamentalnych funkcjach: rozpoznania (prowadzącego do „od-opowiedzenia” i rekontekstualizacji fabuły) i zawieszenia (otwierającego tekst na ambiwalentne i sprzeczne interpretacje). Artykuł został zainspirowany pracami Kristin Thompson poświęconymi dominancie definiowanej jako element jednoczący wszystkie aspekty dzieła. Według Thompson niespodzianka rządzi formą – od całościowego kształtu opowiadania aż po poziom pojedynczego zdania. Autorka dowodzi, że „niespodzianka” stanowi dominantę w puzzle films, a „pojedyncze zdanie” – na poziomie metaforycznym – może być postrzegane jako ekwiwalent ujęcia filmowego. Wybrane filmy zostały umieszczone w kontekście kognitywizmu (Bordwell, Thompson) i narratologii (McHale).
The article focuses on the “significant shot” in the popular (as opposed to heavy weight) variant of puzzle films. The shot is identified as significant if it performs a prominent role in the structure of a film text. To capture its significance (in the aspect of meaning-making), the author focuses on its two fundamental functions: recognition (leading to “re-telling” and re-contextualisation of the story) and suspension (opening the text to ambivalent and contradicting interpretations). The text has been inspired by Kristin Thompson’s writings on the dominant defined as an element that unifies all aspects of a work. According to Thompson, surprise governs form – from the overall shape of the plot to the level of the individual sentence. The article argues that “surprise” is the dominant in puzzle films and “the individual sentence” – on the metaphorical level – may be perceived as the equivalent of the film shot. Selected films are positioned in the theoretical frameworks of cognitivism (Thompson, Bordwell) and narratology (McHale).
