The aim of the article is to provide a general overview of main issues related to contemporary migration processes. In the first section, the author introduces definitions and discusses methodological challenges related to migration studies. Next, the brief history of migration and modern migration trends are presented. Although the phenomenon of migration has been a constant in human history, academics identify some patterns which have been characterizing migration only since 1945, including its globalization, acceleration, differentiation and politicization. The last section covers three generations of migration theory, namely ‘push‑pull’ theories, the centre–periphery model and the theory of transnational social spaces.

The article analyses the environmental aspects of migration in the context of their environmental causes and effects, focusing, however, on the effects. It was recognized that negative changes in the environment are becoming a more and more frequent cause of migration and may lead to a very wide range of migration, which would be very difficult to control. This will, among other things, have environmental effects in countries targeted by migrants. These effects are considered, using the example of Poland and the need to provide migrants with appropriate living conditions, based on legal regulations relating to the provision of drinking water, sewage disposal and municipal waste management. Such situations should be considered by the state by preparing appropriate action strategies, determining the sources of their financing, and introducing the necessary legislative changes.
Artykuł analizuje aspekty środowiskowe migracji w kontekście środowiskowych przyczyn i skutków migracji. Uznano, że negatywne zmiany w środowisku stają się coraz częstszą przyczyną migracji i mogą prowadzić do migracji o bardzo szerokim zasięgu, bardzo trudnych do kontrolowania. Spowoduje to m.in. skutki dla środowiska w krajach dla emigrantów docelowych. Skutki te są rozpatrywane na przykładzie Polski i konieczności zapewnienia migrantom odpowiednich warunków bytowych na podstawie regulacji prawnych odnoszących się do zapewnienia wody do picia, odprowadzania ścieków i postępowania z odpadami komunalnymi.
В статье анализируются экологические аспекты миграции в контексте экологических причин и последствий миграции. Признано, что негативные изменения в окружающей среде становятся все более частой причиной миграции и могут привести к очень широкому масштабу миграции, очень трудно поддающейся контролю. Это вызовет, помимо прочего, влияние на окружающую среду в странах назначения. Эти последствия рассматриваются на примере Польши и необходимости обеспечения мигрантам адекватных условий жизни на основе правовых норм, касающихся обеспечения питьевой водой, удаления сточных вод и обращения с бытовыми отходами.

Key theories of international migrations: overview, critique and perspectivesThe article aims at critical review of the key theories of international migration. The starting point is the assumption that a critical review of theoretical literature is a necessary component of the research process, especially regarding such rapidly growing field as migration studies. The authors analyze the most important theories developed in migration studies (economic theories, structural-historical theories, migration networks and transnationalism) by pointing out their historical contexts, drawbacks and limitations. At the same time they indicate the new research perspectives, which include relations between migration theory and a broader social context as well as the dialectic of mobility and immobility. Główne teorie migracji międzynarodowych: przegląd, krytyka, perspektywyArtykuł ma na celu krytyczny przegląd głównych teorii migracji międzynarodowych. Punktem wyjścia jest założenie, że krytyczne przeglądy teoretycznej literatury stanowią niezbędny element procesu badawczego, zwłaszcza w tak żywiołowo rozwijającej się dziedzinie jak studia migracyjne. Autorzy analizują najważniejsze koncepcje wypracowane w ramach badań migracyjnych: teorie ekonomiczne, strukturalno-historyczne, sieci migracyjnych i transnacjonalizmu. Polacy należą do narodów bardzo mocno osadzonych w procesach migracyjnych. Migracje z ziem polskich znane były od dawna. Jednak istnieje pewna różnica pomiędzy migracjami w przeszłości a obecnymi. Z uwagi na ich niespotykaną dotąd liczbę wprowadzono termin „feminizacja migracji”. To ona symbolizuje migracje końca XX i początku XXI wieku. Migracja kobiet odciska swoje piętno na rodzinie i społeczeństwie. Jednym z najbardziej dotkliwych skutków jest deficyt usług opiekuńczych w kraju migrujących kobiet. Deficyt obejmuje zarówno dzieci, jak i starszych członków rodziny, zwłaszcza rodziców. Artykuł zwraca uwagę na zjawisko feminizacji migracji, przemiany na przestrzeni lat i skutki.
People from Polish belong to nations very strongly embedded in migration processes. Migrations from Polish lands have been known for a long time. However, there is a difference between past and present migrations. What makes them the most different is the categories of people who migrate because of their gender. Once only men were migrating, while the dominant group is women. Due to their unprecedented number, the term “feminisation of migration” has been introduced. It symbolizes the migration of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. Migration of women impresses its mark on the family and society. One of the most severe effects is the deficit of care services in the country of migrant women. The deficit covers both children and older family members, especially parents. The article draws attention to the phenomenon of feminization of migration, changes over the years and effects.

Presja migracyjna jest mechanizmem powszechnym, wskazującym dynamiczność egzystencji ludzkiej. Złożoność migracji przyczynia się do powstania szeregu pozytywnych i negatywnych konsekwencji, szczególnie związanych z bezpieczeństwem międzynarodowym. Celem poniższego artykułu jest ukazanie problematyki pojęcia migracji oraz kryterium przeludnienia ludności. W identyfikacji współzależności nielegalnych migracji niebagatelne znacznie mają czynniki makroekonomiczne. Na podstawie wybranych państw członkowskich Unii Europejskiej przedstawiono także proces migracyjny, z uwzględnieniem różnych strategii o podłożu ekonomicznym, społecznym i politycznym. Wskazano metody blokowania nielegalnych migracji, procedury postępowania wobec przemieszczającej się ludności oraz sposoby ujednolicenia systemu politycznego państwa.
Migratory pressure is a universal mechanism, indicative of the dynamism of human existence. The complexity of migration contributes to a range of positive and negative consequences, particularly related to international security. The aim of the following article is to show the problematics of the concept of migration and the criterion of population overpopulation. Macro-economic factors play a significant role in identifying the interdependence of illegal migration. On the basis of selected EU Member States, the migration process is also presented, taking into account various strategies with economic, social and political background. Methods of blocking illegal migrations, procedures for dealing with the moving population and ways of unifying the political system of the state were indicated.

Elementy do mozaiki czerpać należy przede wszystkim z Pisma Świętego, tradycji, dorobku myśli teologicznej, nauczania Magisterium, katolickiej myśli społecznej czy personalizmu chrześcijańskiego. Każde z tych źródeł wnosi nowe aspekty.
The article presents the essential elements of the theology of migration. It resembles piecing together the jigsaw puzzle (mosaic), which when put together, can become the normative foundation for the Christian migration ethics. Most of all the elements for that mosaic can be taken from the Bible, the Tradition, the whole of achievements of theological thought, the Church Magisterium, the catholic social teaching and from the content of Christian personalism. Each one of these sources delivers new aspects.

In this article, the history of emigration from Germany and the immigration to Germany especially in relation to its changing borders in the 20th century is discussed. After 1945 Germany was confronted with the integration of a million German refugees. Starting in the 1950s, Germany intentionally attracted foreign workers, and integrated them fairly well. The article analyses the current discussions in Germany in relation to the impact of massive immigration of refugees from non-European areas around 2015. It concludes with a position that in the time of globalisation migration needs a society-focussed and political learning process which has not yet ended and will require more learning. But countries with a declining population are well advised to see immigration as an opportunity for future growth and social diversity.

Polska jako kraj graniczący ze strefą wojny stał się głównym miejscem ucieczki uchodźców z Ukrainy. Nagła fala migracji była dużym wyzwaniem dla władz oraz samorządów lokalnych, które musiały podjąć kosztowne działania zmierzające do zażegnania kryzysu. Poniesione wydatki w przyszłości mogą przynieść korzyści polskiej gospodarce pod warunkiem, że imigranci pozostaną w kraju nawet po zakończeniu wojny w Ukrainie. Młodzi ludzie podejmując pracę mogą zapełnić luki na rynku pracy, zwiększyć wpływy z podatków oraz poprawić sytuację demograficzną. Celem pracy była ocena wybranych skutków kryzysu migracyjnego dla Polski oraz porównanie działań podjętych na rzecz uchodźców i źródeł ich finansowania przez wybrane miasta aglomeracji śląskiej. W pracy dokonano analizy danych, które dostarczyły informacji o poziomie bezrobocia dla Polski oraz wybranych miast. Dokonano analizy porównawczej działań podejmowanych przez Katowice i Bytom oraz poniesionych nakładów pieniężnych na pomoc uchodźcom. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że przyjeżdzający do kraju imigranci z Ukrainy szybko zostali wchłonięci przez rynek pracy, a ich obecność nie wpłynęła negatywnie na poziom płac w gospodarce. Pomoc oferowana przez Katowice i Bytom umożliwiła dostosowanie się migrantom do nowej rzeczywistości. Oba miasta prowadziły bardzo podobne działania w postaci zapewnienia zakwaterowania, wyżywienia czy pomocy medycznej. Wsparcie udzielone migrantom było sfinansowane z budżetu miasta oraz funduszy zewnętrznych.
Poland, as a country bordering the war zone, became the main escape destination for refugees from Ukraine. The sudden wave of migration was an enormous challenge for the authorities and local governments, which had to take costly measures to deal with the crisis. The expenses incurred may bring benefits to the Polish economy in the future, providing the immigrants remain in the country even after the end of the war in Ukraine. By taking up employment, young people can fill the gaps in the labour market, increase tax revenues and improve the demographic situation. The aim of the study was to assess selected effects of the migration crisis for Poland, and compare the measures taken to assist refugees and the sources of their financing by selected cities of the Silesian agglomeration. The work analyses the data on the level of unemployment for Poland and selected cities. A comparative analysis of the activities undertaken by the cities of Katowice and Bytom and the financial outlays incurred for this purpose was carried out. The research shows that refugees arriving in the country were quickly absorbed by the labour market, and their presence did not negatively affect the level of wages in the economy. The assistance offered by the cities of Katowice and Bytom enabled the migrants to adapt to the new reality. Both cities carried out very similar activities, such as providing accommodation, food, and medical assistance. The support provided to migrants was financed from the city budget and external funds.

The article aims to evaluate the scale and consequences of the emigration of Ukrainians triggered by the military aggression of the Russian Federation. The paper also attempts to determine the composition of the refugees. The first weeks of the military aggression saw the most active departure of the population from Ukraine, after that the number of those seeking refuge decreased. According to the estimation of the Ptukha Institute for Demography and Social Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine based on the data from the State Border Guard Service, the number of ‘refugees from the war in Ukraine’ reached 3 million as of the end of June 2022. The emigrants are mainly residents of Kyiv and Kharkiv, which results in a much higher specific weight of people with higher education than the national average. This fact combined with an orientation towards employment rather than social assistance (a mentality that is relatively close to Europeans), suggests a high probability (especially compared to the same emigrants from other countries, including Syria and Afghanistan) for most Ukrainian women to successfully adapt to life across the border. This is especially true for those who came to Poland, due to the minimal linguistic and cultural differences between the countries. The potential amount of irreversible migration losses, depending on the military and economic factors, ranges from 600–700 thousand to 5–5.5 million people. Considering the fact that approximately 3 million Ukrainians had already been staying (working) abroad before 2022, the war is likely to result in a demographic catastrophe for Ukraine, whose demographic potential has been utterly exhausted.

Sine Agergaard, the author of “Rethinking sports and integration. Developing a Transnational Perspective on Migrants and Descendants in Sports”, is well known for her work in researches of migration, integration and social participation, especially in and by sport. In her previous researches she had used sport-based perspective to examine how migrants had integrated within hosting society, in what ways relations between newcomers, local communities and state institutions were established, and what were the social processes of migration with special focus on professionals as an actors and objects of these phenomena (Agergaard and Tiesler 2014; Agergaard et al. 2018; Agergaard 2017; Agergaard and Botelho 2014; Agergaard and la Cour 2012). She is also the co-founder and currently head of the International Network for research in Sport and Migration Issues. (spomi-net) In the mentioned works, Agergaard used different approaches and methods to examine both particular cases (like a problem of women professionals’ integration, ethnic minority into the field of Danish football) and transnational relations. Problems researched by the author refer to broader mosaic of interests tied up by the question: “How one can establish perspective on locally occurring but internationally connected migration-related phenomena in field of sport?” Summary of work (books and articles) establish Agergaard’s position as an expert in the field of migration and sport.

The aim of this text is an attempt to show different perspectives of the aspect of childhood spent as an emigrant, in this case in Norway. The stereotype describing this Scandinavian country as not very different culturally from Poland is a subject worth going into more deeply. Childhood spent outside the home country may have different faces. International migrations are one of the most important social phenomenon in the modern world and modern Poland. Article presents the essence of contemporary migrations Poles to United Kingdom and most of all it shows readiness of young people to move abroad.
