    W 2013 r. Stowarzyszenie Historii Mówionej obchodziło swoją czterdziestą rocznicę istnienia. Odegrało ono bardzo znaczącą rolę w rozwoju dziedziny historii mówionej (oral history), szczególnie w Wielkiej Brytanii. Artykuł przedstawia ten rozwój i rozpatruje go w szerszym kontekście, jednocześnie poddając analizie zmieniający się skład osobowy Stowarzyszenia, który uczestniczył w tym procesie. W analizie historii dziedziny badawczej historii mówionej autor stosuje raczej koncepcje kolektywnego myślenia Ludwika Flecka niż model zmiany paradygmatu przyjmowany we wcześniejszych interpretacjach tej historii. To umożliwia rozumienie historii samego Stowarzyszenia, jak również rozwoju historii mówionej w szerszym kontekście zmian społecznych wraz ze źródłami i całą gamą wpływów intelektualnych. Można również stwierdzić, że podczas gdy samo Stowarzyszenie na pewno będzie wciąż odgrywało dużą rolę w przyszłości, to jednak rola ta będzie prawdopodobnie ulegała zmianom, a do tego będą w niej pojawiać się istotne napięcia  wynikające ze ścierania się różnych koncepcji kolektywnego myślenia.

    The article is a review of the most significant projects carried out using the oral history  method by the Institute of Contemporary History at the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (ÚSD AV ČR) between 1996–2012. It is presented from the perspective of Czech historiography with regard to thematic and historical trends. The author also presents the methodological aspects of those projects along with the reactions provoked by such initiatives by both experts and society. The author states that contemporary oral history  is a well-known concept within Czech culture, drawing on the universal „expansion of remembrance” and a growing interest in the retention of peoples’ accounts, though the term was hardly known in the Czech Republic twenty years ago. Today, the Czech Republic has a broad spectrum of both completed and on-going oral history  projects, as well as better institutional, methodological and technical bases, which, together with internationally recognised spokespersons, makes them one of the world leaders in this research category. The author presents Czech oral history  in a basic (chronological, thematic and institutional) framework and compares it not only with its immediate neighbours but also with more distant countries. This not only helps distinguish common features within the oral history  world but also defines those characteristics unique to the Czech model.

    What makes oral history different from any other history research method is the fact that a historian is actively involved in gathering information about events from the past. A category of performance borrowed from anthropology and ethnology shows that not only may a researcher influence a person narrating their story (e.g. by asking particular questions), it is also the storyteller who may influence the researcher, both in an existential as well as an epistemological dimension. The article discusses the problem of oral history research experience on the basis of an interview that the author carried out with the eighty-three-year old Kazimierz on the topic of the history of Międzyrzec Podlaski. The author presents the influence this interview had on her practicing oral history method as well as the history itself in a wider context.  A reflection on the experience of oral history understood as a kind of research intuition (J. Huizinga) and a form of experiencing a research situation (F. Ankersmit), allows for a closer look at the issue of a researchers’ self-awareness and as a result on factors influencing their way of gathering information and the process of constructing history narration.

    Through historical analysis and interpretation of memories of Czech/Czechoslovak firefighters who have been professionally active since 1960s until 1990s (and/or beyond), his paper aims to analyze the ways in which his socio-professional group has been behaving during the last 40–50 years. Given that only very little historical research has been done on members of this group, the paper represents a first pioneer attempt. The research is a continuation of previous research projects conducted by Czech oral historians focused on working class members and on changes of their opinions, attitudes and behavior before and after 1989. The author’s ambition is to contribute to the current knowledge of the nature and specifics of the mentioned „normalization” regime (1969–1989) as well as the „transformation-to-democracy” era (1990s) in Czechoslovakia. In the present paper the author outlines the current state of research (20 conducted interviews with 10 firefighters as to the end of 2012), comments on some methodological problems associated with oral-historical research of this group and offers her interpretations of selected topics.

    The author, from the perspective of a contemporary history researcher, indicates the potential common foundations, but also the differences in using the oral history method in an interdisciplinary perspective. Based on practical experience, he concludes that the assumptions of oral history and other disciplines for which research material is a conversation are very similar. The difference between the particular fields lies in specific methods. This article is a reflection on certain current oral history problems. The author's starting point is the current situation, where on the one hand there is an increasing interest in oral history, because of a human need for stories, but on the other hand, people are losing their ability to tell stories or listen to them intently more and more every day. On this occasion, he introduces the issue of the speed of life in today's times, striving for simplicity and conciseness in the context of a narrative relationship. The author continues to deal with some methodological issues that have not been given special attention to in the past. This is particularly true about the problem of subjectivity, memory and its role in the construction of biographical narratives, the issue of social and political context (both past and present) in which interviews are carried out. In the end, the author indicates how the study of oral history helps to learn and understand not only the past but also the present. In fact, this is the great strength of this method, in this aspect it is an inspiration for researchers in other fields of social sciences, for which conversation is the basic source.
    Autor z perspektywy badacza historii współczesnej wskazuje nie tylko potencjalne wspólne podstawy, lecz także różnice w wykorzystywaniu metody oral history w perspektywie interdyscyplinarnej. Na podstawie praktycznego doświadczenia dochodzi do wniosku, że założenia oral history i innych dyscyplin, dla których materiał badawczy stanowią rozmowy, są bardzo podobne. Różnica między poszczególnymi dziedzinami leży w konkretnych metodach. Artykuł jest refleksją nad pewnymi aktualnymi problemami oral history. Punktem wyjścia autora jest obecna sytuacja, kiedy to z jednej strony wzrasta zainteresowanie oral history, bo przecież ludzie potrzebują opowieści, a z drugiej strony z każdym dniem coraz bardziej tracą zdolność opowiadania historii życia czy ich chętnego słuchania. Przy tej okazji wprowadza kwestię „zabiegania” w dzisiejszych czasach, dążenia do uproszczenia i skrótu w kontekście relacji narracyjnej. Dalej zajmuje się pewnymi kwestiami metodologicznymi, którym w przeszłości nie poświęcano szczególnej uwagi. Chodzi tu szczególnie o problem subiektywności, pamięci i jej roli w konstruowaniu narracji biograficznych czy  kwestię kontekstu społecznego i politycznego (zarówno przeszłego, jak i współczesnego), w którym realizowane są wywiady. W zakończeniu wskazuje, w jaki sposób badaniom oral history pomaga poznanie i zrozumienie nie tylko przeszłości, lecz także współczesności. W tym właśnie bowiem tkwi wielka siła tej metody, która jest inspiracją dla badaczy innych dziedzin nauk społecznych, dla których podstawowym źródłem jest rozmowa.

    W artykule zdiagnozowana została potrzeba stworzenia przestrzeni do wspólnej analizy wywiadów w ramie historii mówionej, która jako praktyka badawcza i aktywność obywatelska jest już od dawna obecna zarówno w polskiej historiografii, jak i szerzej w polskiej kulturze. Po wielu latach doskonalenia warsztatu metodologicznego w zakresie prowadzenia wywiadów, ich opracowania i archiwizacji, a także pogłębiania refleksji etycznej, przyszedł czas na upowszechnianie źródeł ustnych oraz podejmowanie pracy analitycznej zarówno istniejących już materiałów, jak i nowo pozyskiwanych wywiadów. Tekst jest zachętą do udziału w Seminariach Historii Mówionej, których celem poza kolektywną interpretacją źródeł będzie namysł teoretyczny, metodologiczny i etyczny nad oral history, do którego zaproszeni są przedstawiciele różnych dyscyplin, ośrodków i organizacji praktykujących historię mówioną w Polsce.
    The article diagnoses the need to create a space for collaborative analysis of interviews in the frame of oral history, which as a research practice and civic activity has long been present both in Polish historiography and in Polish culture. According to the author, after many years of improving methodological skills of interviewing, processing and archiving oral accounts, advancing ethical reflection, the time has come to disseminate oral sources, as well as to undertake analytical work on both existing material and newly collected interviews. This text is an encouragement to participate in the Oral History Seminars, which will aim to bring together theoretical and methodological reflection from representatives of various disciplines, centers and organizations that practice oral history in Poland.

    The following article constitutes just another voice in a discussion on the social and cultural dimensions of remembrance and different relationships between different kinds of remembering and commemorating and biographical narration. On the basis of the subject literature and empirical materials, i.e. accounts of Macedonian refugees and re-emigrants from France who came to Lower Silesia after the Second World War, the author analyzes three levels of memory. They are the following: autobiographical memory seen from the angle of experience and narration, collective memory of a generation together with the concept of collective identity and the policy towards memory revealed mostly in different practices of commemorating.

     This article is about the situation in Ukraine, which allowed oral history to develop unrestrainedly in the post-Soviet period. The author distinguishes and analyses the development stages of this research approach and defines its distinctive features. Considerable attention is also paid to the analysis of numerous methodological strategies that were used by Ukrainian researchers to write papers based on oral history . The author also mentions numerous national and international projects organised by, or carried out with the participation of Ukrainian researchers. Furthermore, the research subjects undertaken by Ukrainian researchers have been ranked in order of priority. An institutional status is also described, along with the main trends and tendencies in the development of this research approach in Ukraine, which is also shown.

    Only recently has the contemporary witness become the subject of academic study. The emerging scholarship views this figure as belonging to a specific historical period, namely the post-Holocaust era. Today, the narrations of the contemporary witness are commonly understood as constructs, as stories developed synchronously in the course of the interview. The article takes a closer look at the formative period of the German Oral History studies around 1980, a field deeply informed by post-dictatorial sensibilities. It locates the figure of the contemporary witness, the interviewer and the interview methods employed within the historical context in which they emerged. Moreover, if we consider other Oral History approaches developed elsewhere and compare the German approach to Fritz Schütze’s narrative interview method for the social sciences, it can be identified as a genuinely historical, diachronically operating approach.  By letting the interviewees talk about their memories uninterrupted, they were encouraged to reflect on their lives as a whole. A the same time, pioneers of the field such as Lutz Niethammer and Alexander von Plato developed ways to verify the narrations’ plausibility and thus to evaluate the reliability of the interview as istorical source. This combination of empathy and skepticism, of unconditional interest in a person’s full life-story and its critical verification became the hallmark of German Oral history Studies, not least because emerged in a post-dictatorial society. Rather than studying memories as mere constructions of the past, they developed a methodology aimed at enabling historians to get access to the actual past experiences which they believed are contained in the retrospective testimonies of individual human beings.

     The article is about the relationship between two scientific fields – history and psychology – with a focus on their connections during the last 150 years and about the meaning of subjectivity in history. It addresses possibilities of cooperation, taking as an example the relationship of oral history  and psychoanalysis. The article emphasizes the problems regarding unconscious elements in history as well as the perception and “digestion” of history by the individual and the collective memory.

    The author presents the outcomes of oral history  research relating to the history of the Czechoslovak Maritime Shipping Company from 1959–1989 in the form of a case study. The interpretation of the accounts of seventeen former Czechoslovakian sailors focuses on two aspects: their professional and family lives.     The aim of the following article is to analyse the consequences of the Prague Spring on the Czechoslovak People’s Army on the strength of biographical accounts by direct participants of the events, and to compare them with surviving documents from that period. The research project has been carried out using the oral history method and refers to accounts of soldiers laid off from the army as a result of the so-called normalisation purges that took place from the late 1960s until the mid-1970s. The article presents the chronology of the normalisation methods used in the army and the way they were applied both at official and party level. It also discusses the consequences of these actions on the ordinary lives of the witnesses and thus how reflections of those events were later portrayed for the purpose of the study.
