    This paper has two parts to it. The fi rst part is about the presence and possible impact of Hindi and Polish as foreign words in the contemporary English language. This is measured via the proposed tool of CRAC (Cumulative Average Relative Count). The research is done on the basis of the British National Corpus (2001, 2007) and Longman Pronunciation Dictionary (2004, 2009). The focus is laid on the overriding heuristic metaphor LANGUAGE LAWS are PHYSICAL LAWS, where laws of lexical assimilation are viewed as analogous to physical laws of gravity. The second part marks the transition from a theoretical-descriptive perspective into a more practical, intercultural dimension. It is about translation of foreign proper names from the viewpoint of legal (certified) translation. This is a significant issue as many foreign words are actually proper names in English. This part relates then to specific controversies and proposed solutions concerning translation of Polish and Hindi proper foreign names in view of the presence and absence of their diacritic forms in English. The framework for adoption of the argument are institutionally established standards of certified translation practice in Poland.

    The aim of this article is to illustrate the most frequent conceptualisations of depression in the contemporary Italian media discourse. The analyses presented in the paper are mainly based on the cognitive theory of metaphor by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson and form a part of a wider research topic regarding the differences in conceptualisation of depression depending on such factors as the language, the type of the discourse and the personal experience of the author concerning the state of depression. The study revealed that depression is represented the most frequently in the analysed corpus through the frame of disease, and by the metaphors DEPRESSION IS AN ENEMY and DEPRESSION IS A LOCATION, often situated down and taking the form of a container. Less numerous and regular were other kinds of its personifi cations and representations of depression as an object or danger.

    This article proposes a more inclusive approach to the concept of gender, identity, and non-normativity. Gender is often used in research as a binary category, leading researchers to misrepresent the more complex reality. Taking a more inclusive perspective on how people differ in terms of their body and body perceptions and accepting gender as a fuzzy category make research in linguistics more inclusive in terms of the communities we study and the methodologies we use. Queer Cognitive Linguistics (QCL) proposes a non-reductive approach to language and cognition, recognising the complexity of the human conceptual system. QCL treats universality in human cognition with caution and posits, after Embodied Sociolinguistics, the two-way embodiment, where the interactions between body and language are both bidirectional and intertwined.

    Emotions are one of the most fascinating and difficult aspects of human experience, and have received significant attention in biblical studies. This paper explores how one Hebrew lexeme, rûaḥ, provides a point of entry into the complex world of how emotions are expressed in ancient texts. Drawing from some insights of Cognitive Linguistics, it examines the use of rûaḥ to express the experience of impatience and patience, and arrogance and humility. This paper then challenges a long-held but simplistic equation of rûaḥ with anger, and argues that a more nuanced and complex relationship exists between lexeme and emotion than most citations in scholarship suggest.

    This article is devoted to the study of the functioning thorough conceptual metaphor in journalistic discourse in the early 21st century. Metaphor is one of the most powerful instruments of knowledge, conceptualizing and categorizing of reality. Purpose. The purpose of the study is to identify pragmatic communicative and cognitive specifics conceptual metaphor in the journalistic discourse of the early 21st century. Methods include: method metaphorical modeling of conceptual metaphor; method of linguistic description; method of conceptual analysis. Results. The article examined and described pragmatic communicative and cognitive specific of conceptual metaphor in Ukrainian journalistic discourse. There were characterized different types of metaphors that operate in the language of political communication. Much attention is paid to the metaphor with conceptual sphere of nature. With their help journalists/reporters portray social and political life of the country. There were characterized different types of metaphors of nature, metaphors of natural disasters, water and land; fitomorphic and zoomorphic metaphors.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie opiniotwórczej siły  metafor w kontekście społecznego postrzegania osób czarnoskórych. Metafory odnoszące się do koloru czarnego to jedna z najczęstszych figur retorycznych występujących w wypowiedziach na temat przybywających do Europy Afroamerykanów czy imigrantów z Afryki. Wychodząc z założenia, że język wpływa na światopogląd mówiącego, autorki podejmują próbę wykazania, w jaki sposób „metafory czerni” mogą wpływać na kształtowanie się negatywnego nastawienia do osób czarnoskórych, a w konsekwencji wzmacniać zjawisko rasizmu. Autorki odwołują się do teorii metafor pojęciowych i procesów poznawczych, badanych przez językoznawstwo kognitywne,  oraz zagadnień międzykulturowych. Ponadto wskazują na konieczność wyeliminowania pewnych wyrażeń z języka potocznego, gdyż pejoratywne słowa opisujące Innych (np. „metafory czerni”) mogą wpływać na kształtowanie się utartych wzorców  myślenia u dzieci na temat osób odmiennych kulturowo.
    The aim of this article is to explore the issue of opinion-forming potential of metaphors in the context of social perception of black people. Metaphors concerning black colour are one of the most common figures of speech that are present in statements on Afro-Americans or black immigrants from Africa arriving in Europe. Drawing on the assumption that language affects its speaker’s worldview, the authors attempt to show how ‘black metaphors’ may result in developing a negative attitude towards black people and, consequently, enhance racism. The authors refer to metaphor and cognitive processes theory as well as intercultural issues.The authors point to the necessity of eliminating certain expressions from everyday language. Pejorative words describing the Others (e.g. ‘black metaphors’) are likely to influence children’s thinking patterns on culturally different persons.

    Artykuł jest próbą usystematyzowania i sklasyfikowania wszystkich metafor pojęć wchodzących w skład pola semantyczno-leksykalnego miłosierdzia. W tekście Koranu wyróżniam siedem najczęściej występujących metafor: miłosierdzie to przedmiot, miłosierdzie to wyżej, miłosierdzie to substancja miłosierdzie to żywa istota, miłosierdzie to zamknięta przestrzeń, miłosierdzie to pożywienie, miłosierdzie to proces oraz kilka innych, pojedynczo użytych metafor. Artykuł opisuje użycie wszystkich metafor w tekście i powiązanie danej metafory z poszczególnymi znaczenia pojęcia miłosierdzia.
    The aim of the article is to present metaphors depicting concepts from the semantic field of MERCY in the Quran. The theory of metaphors developed by cognitive linguistics was applied to examine types of metaphors. As a result, seven types were distinguished: MERCY IS AN OBJECT, MERCY IS UP, MERCY IS A LIVING CREATURE, MERCY IS A CONTAINER, MERCY IS A SUBSTANCE, MERCY IS A PROCESS, MERCY IS FOOD. The article analyzes the ways in which these metaphors were used in the Quran. Furthermore, relations between different types of metaphors and the relevant concepts, as well as relations between metaphors and different meanings of the concepts in the semantic field of mercy have been presented.

    The aim of this paper is to present some reflections concerning the multimodal metaphor, which has recently turned into a topic of growing scientific interest. The mono modal metaphor presents itself only as one means of representation (for example, verbal metaphor), while the multimodal metaphor consists of connections among domains belonging to different modes of representation. First of all, the concept of the multimodal metaphor introduced by Forceville (1996, 2008, 2009) and the possible modes of representation are explained. Th e second part of the paper concentrates on the structure and the characteristics of verbo-visual multimodal metaphors, that is, those that come as a result of interaction between linguistic (verbal narration) and iconic (visual narration) elements. Afterwards, the author discusses the newspaper cartoon, in other words, a type of opinion journalism which encodes verbal and visual discourse that intends to provide a critical and/or humorous vision of an aspect of political, social or cultural life. Th e analysis leaves no doubt that the verbo-visual genre, represented by newspaper cartoons, is a great example of the multimodal metaphor. Therefore, the paper presents a detailed description of ten newspaper cartoons taken from the opinion section of the digital version of the El País giving also emphasis to the representation of the source and target domains in terms of metaphorical-metonymical interaction.

    The purpose of this article is to offer a description of how to conceptualize the joy in French and Spanish. The analysis is based on the concept of a metaphor developed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson. In the assumptions of cognitive linguistics, metaphor is the main and the most important carrier of thinking and understanding.In the initial part of this article, in order to reflect on the readable image of joy completely, it was considered important to discuss it within the linguistics and psychological perspectives. The analysis reveals that there are a number of expressions that indicate the initial moment of joy. This feeling may appear gradually or occur suddenly. However, most psychologists describe the joy as a dynamic sensation as a result of stimulus.Our analysis shows that metaphorical expressions are common for French and Spanish, which represent joy as a light, a living organism or disease. On the other hand, the differences concern, for example, the consequences resulting from the disease state. In French, a subject experiencing emotions of joy can seem or behave irrationally. In contrast, in Spanish, joy is seen as a contagious disease.
    Celem niniejszej pracy jest opis sposobu konceptualizacji radości w języku francuskim i hiszpańskim. Analiza opiera się na koncepcji metafory opracowanej przez George’a Lakoffa i Marka Johnsona. W ujęciu językoznawstwa kognitywnego metafora jest najważniejszym narzędziem poznania i rozumienia pojęć abstrakcyjnych.W części wstępnej artykułu, w celu ukazania w pełni czytelnego obrazu radości, emocja ta została przedstawiona z perspektywy językowej i psychologicznej. Istnieje wiele zwrotów i wyrażeń, które wskazują na początkowy moment radości. Uczucie to może pojawiać się stopniowo bądź wystąpić nagle. Jednakże większość psychologów opisuje radość jako uczucie dynamiczne, występujące na skutek bodźca.Analiza pokazuje, że wspólne dla języka francuskiego i hiszpańskiego są wyrażenia metaforyczne, które przedstawiają radość jako światło, żywy organizm lub chorobę. Natomiast różnice dotyczą na przykład następstw wynikających ze stanu chorobowego. W języku francuskim podmiot doznający emocji radości może majaczyć lub zachowywać się irracjonalnie. Natomiast w języku hiszpańskim radość jest postrzegana jako zaraźliwa choroba.
    Cet article a pour objectif de décrire les ressemblances et les différences dans la conceptualisation de la joie en français et celle de alegría en espagnol. Dans notre recherche, nous nous appuyons sur la théorie de la métaphore proposée par G. Lakoff et M. Johnson. Dans la linguistique cognitive, la métaphore est un des outils les plus importants pour essayer de comprendre le domaine abstrait de notre expérience.D’abord, nous étudions la joie vue comme un concept psychologique pour passer ensuite à la description d’une série de métaphores conceptuelles et de métonymies de la joie. Les exemples analysés sont tirés de la presse et d’oeuvres littéraires françaises et espagnoles.Notre analyse montre que les expressions métaphoriques communes pour le français et l’espagnol sont celles, qui représentent la joie comme une lumière, un organisme vivant ou une maladie. D’autre part, les différences concernent, par exemple, les conséquences résultant de l’état pathologique. Ainsi, les Français qui éprouvent une grande joie peuvent se comporter de manière irrationnelle. En revanche, en espagnol, la joie est représentée comme une maladie contagieuse, c’est-à-dire une émotion qui se communique d’une personne à l’autre.

    Artykuł ma na celu refleksję nad sposobami konstruowania, typami i funkcjami metafor konceptualnych oraz nad powiązaniami metafory konceptualnej z jej językową realizacją (m. in. przez zjawisko rozkładalności znaczenia). Badania prowadzone są z perspektywy kognitywistycznej. Nacisk zostaje położony na teorie dotyczące metafory konceptualnej, takie jak teoria interakcji metafor, teoria interakcji domen, teoria metafory konceptualnej w propozycji Lakoffa i Johnsona oraz amalgamat pojęciowy. Uwzględnione zostają też metonimia oraz sieciowy model znaczenia. W prowadzonej analizie, która ma charakter jakościowy, następuje próba wskazania na metafory poznawcze obecne w internetowych tekstach tematyzujących konflikt zbrojny w Ukrainie. Korpus tekstowy pochodzi z portalu informacyjnego Onet.pl, który jest jednym z największych portali internetowych w Polsce o znacznym wpływie opiniotwórczym i może służyć jako źródło do wyciągania wniosków lingwistycznych o bardziej ogólnej naturze.
    This article discusses conceptual metaphors – their types, functions and the ways in which they are created. It also reflects on the connection between conceptual metaphors and their linguistic realisation. The research is carried out from the cognitive point of view. Theories related to conceptual metaphors e.g. interaction theory of metaphor, domain interaction model, theory of conceptual metaphor proposed by Lakoff and Johnson; conceptual blending are highlighted. Metonymy and radial structure of meaning are also taken into consideration during the research, which has qualitative character. In the analysis an attempt is made to determine which conceptual metaphors have been used in digital texts devoted to the war currently taking place in Ukraine. Text corpus is based on material gathered from Onet.pl that can be viewed as one of the most influential news websites in Poland and can serve as a representative source to draw more general conclusions.

    Artykuł poświęcony jest językowemu obrazowi wiary w Boga rozumianej przez pryzmat potrzeby bezpieczeństwa. Na podstawie zebranego materiału-wypowiedzi pochodzących od osób wierzących, wyodrębniłam warianty metafory WIARA W BOGA TO ŹRÓDŁO POCZUCIA BEZPIECZEŃSTWA wraz z profilami semantycznymi. Z materiału wynika, że badani postrzegają wiarę w Boga jako element życia zapewniający im spokój, gwarantujący zdrowie psychiczne, dający nadzieję, chroniący przed zagrożeniami oraz pocieszenie.
    In the paper author discusses the linguistic view of the interplay between the notion of faith in God and the safety need. Main concern is focused on analysing metaphorical extensions of the concept of faith in God as the source of safety. Based on the interviews among Christians, author analyses the problem in question with respect to particular semantic profiles of the metaphor FAITH IS A SOURCE OF SAFETY. In many cases faith is presented as the element that secures human life, guarantees peace, hope, offers protection and consolation. In other words, the picture of faith that emerges from the interviews portrays it as a fundamental notion in life, a source of safety, rescue or even the last resort.

Three practical tasks have been fulfilled: a sample of metaphorical expressions from authentic sources has been made and analyzed, and a sequence of the learning process stages and appropriate sources of information for use as a means of studying metaphor has been determined. A complex of research methods was applied, including linguistic analysis as well as linguodidactic methods of modelling, experimental teaching and questioning surveying. As a result of the study, a model of communicative-oriented teaching / learning of conceptual metaphor within ESP process has been elaborated.
    Celem artykułu jest ukazanie, w jaki sposób ustalenia językoznawstwa kognitywnego mogą znaleźć zastosowanie w nauczaniu i uczeniu się wyrażeń figuratywnych oraz w opracowaniu zorientowanego na komunikację modelu nauczania angielskiego języka specjalistycznego. Rozważania teoretyczne i praktyczne zastosowania dotyczą metafory konceptualnej, naświetlonej z punktu widzenia językoznawstwa kognitywnego oraz teorii komunikacyjnego nauczania języków obcych. W artykule przedstawiono analizę wyrażeń metaforycznych pochodzących z autentycznych źródeł, określono sekwencję etapów procesu nauczania oraz wskazano odpowiednie źródła informacji do wykorzystania w badaniu metafory. Tym samym zastosowano kilka metod badawczych, między innymi analizę lingwistyczną oraz metody dydaktyczne: modelowania, nauczania eksperymentalnego i ankietyzacji. W wyniku przeprowadzonych badań opracowanomodel zorientowanego na komunikację nauczania i uczenia się metafory konceptualnej w procesie nauczania angielskiego języka specjalistycznego.

    The article presents the study of the influence of professional competence of EFL learners on their academic writing. The task was approached through analyzing learners’ competence in specific knowledge domains - knowledge of terms and specific concepts, represented as conceptual metaphors. Conceptual metaphor models were analyzed in the English written texts produced by Russian students with different competences in economics – at both non-professional and professional levels of academic discourse (NPAD and PAD respectively). Metaphor Identification Procedure VU University Amsterdam (MIPVU) was applied to metaphor identification, and alternative metaphor and preferential conceptualization analysis was performed to compare the scope of source and the range of target in NPAD and PAD. Findings highlight the areas of commonality as well as divergence in terms of students’ professional competence represented in conceptual metaphors in L2 writing. The main differences in the scope of the source analysis are quantitative rather than qualitative. The range of target comparison between NPAD and PAD indicates a significantly larger range of targets for the professional level students, a lower level of metaphorization for the non-professional level, and inclusive strategies across the two levels. Practical recommendations suggest an improved research methodology for studying metaphor production in EAP and ESP as well as a deeper understanding of ESP content and its structure.

    This paper attempts to demonstrate, using Polish and German press reports concerning the end of the world predicted for 2012, how the Polish expression (koniec świata) and its German equivalents (Weltuntergang / Ende der Welt) are conceptualised in media discourse. Based on cognitivist concepts, the article presents the (linguistic) mechanisms of the media-based construction of reality and discusses the deregulation of a linguistic sign in discursive reality.
    W niniejszym artykule podjęta została próba ukazania na przykładzie polsko- i niemieckojęzycznych wypowiedzi prasowych dotyczących zapowiadanego w 2012 roku końca świata, w jaki sposób wyrażenie to (koniec świata) oraz jego niemieckojęzyczne odpowiedniki (Weltuntergang / Ende der Welt) konceptualizowane są w dyskursie medialnym. W oparciu o założenia kognitywistyki przedstawione zostały (językowe) mechanizmy konstruowania rzeczywistości przez media, jak również kwestia deregulacji znaku językowego w rzeczywistości dyskursywnej.
    In dem vorliegenden Beitrag wird der Versuch unternommen, am Beispiel der Presseberichterstattung zum angekündigten Weltuntergang im Jahr 2012 zu zeigen, wie dieser Ausdruck (Weltuntergang) und sein polnisches Äquivalent (koniec świata) im medialen Diskurs konzeptualisiert werden. Vor dem Hintergrund kognitiver Konzepte der Linguistik soll vor allem deutlich gemacht werden, auf welche (sprachlichen) Mechanismen sich die durch die Medien konstruierte Wirklichkeit stützt. In einem zweiten Schritt soll der Frage nachgegangen werden, wie sich die Beziehung zwischen dem sprachlichen Zeichen und seinem Referenten in der diskursiven Wirklichkeit verändert.

    Badanie procesów postrzegania i poznania świata przez pryzmat człowieka jest kluczową ideą współczesnego paradygmatu naukowego. Czołową pozycję w ramach paradygmatu antropocentrycznego zajmuje podejście kognitywne, skierowane na wyjaśnianie sposobów poznania świata, procesów myślenia, przechowywania informacji i jej opracowania, utworzenia struktur wiedzy i ich reprezentacji w świadomości człowieka i formach językowych. Rola języka w poznawczych procesach człowieka jest badana zarówno w zakresie językoznawstwa, jak i literaturoznawstwa. Badania tekstów artystycznych w aspekcie kognitywnym obejmuje poetyka kognitywna, która powstała w ciągu ostatnich dziesięcioleci. Odniesienie literatury do rodzajów sztuki i rozumienie utworów artystycznych jako współdziałanie tekstu i odbiorcy jest jednym ze sposobów twórczego poznania świata. Prowadzi on do wydzielania znaczącej pozycji obrazowych środków języka, wśród których metafora jako kognitywny mechanizm kształtowania konceptów znajduje się w centrum uwagi. Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badania kognitywnych aspektów metaforyzacji, związanych z procesem postrzegania i konceptualizacji emocji człowieka, na materiale tekstu artystycznego. Poddano analizie pojęciowe nasycenie konceptu miłość w powieści Sofii Andruchowicz, sposoby jego reprezentacji leksykalnej, a także właściwości indywidualistyczno-autorskiego obrazu świata i unikalnych właściwości specyfiki narodowej. Celem badania jest wyjaśnienie mechanizmów kognitywnych za pomocą semantyki znaków językowych, wpływających na wyznaczenie w odniesieniu do człowieka jego roli w społeczeństwie, podjęcie decyzji we własnych działaniach. Artykuł pokazuje jak działania człowieka zależą od jego interpretacji emocji i wydarzeń.
    Study of cognitive processes and human perspective in world perception is the key idea of the modern scientific paradigm. Leading position within anthropocentric paradigm belongs to cognitive approach that focuses on the ways of world perception, processes of thinking, information storage and processing, formation of knowledge structures and their representation in areas of human perception and linguistic units. The language role in human perception processes is being researched in the area of linguistics as well as in the area of literature. Studies of literary texts in cognitive aspect are encompassed by cognitive poetics, which has been formed in recent decades. Reference to literature as to an art and understanding of literary text in terms of an interrelation of a text and a reader represents one of the ways for creative perception of the world, leads to emphasizing on significant position of figurative devices of language, among which metaphor as a cognitive mechanism for creation of concepts is in the center of attention. The article is addressed to cognitive aspects of metaphorization related to perception and conceptualization of human emotions based on material of literary text. The research focused on informational content of the concept of love, described in the novel Felix Austria by Sopia An-drukhovych, its lexical representation, the specific features related to the author’s individual comprehension of the world as well as unique national features attracting interest from this perspective. The aim of the research is to explore cognitive mechanisms through semantic of linguistic signs, which influence the definition of human role in a society, decision making process, and, consequently, actions. The article shows how the actions of a person depend on his/her interpretation of emotions and events.
