The research results presented in this article are an answer to the controversial theses questioning the validity of traditional recycling methods. The voices of scientific circles which have appeared recently indicate that irrational waste management and energy-intensive recycling of selected products bring more harm than benefits to the environment. This paper is devoted to the assessment of selected environmental effects of traditional recycling processes for container glass. The environmental impact of collection, segregation, transport and remelting of glass waste was analysed using the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method and available databases. The environmental impact of the processes described was assessed in terms of selected criteria: climate change, energy depletion, air emissions, toxicity and depletion of natural resources. Two methods were used for the calculations: the method of the Institute of Environmental Engineering of Leiden University–CML and the Ecological Scarcity Method (ESM). The calculations were carried out for an exemplary city located in eastern Poland. The study showed that, compared with purely natural glass production, the production of recyclates was more favourable in terms of all the above-mentioned factors. Additional calculations made it possible to estimate the waste transport distance, for which the environmental impact of transporting recyclate to the glassworks made the glass recycling process by re-melting less favourable than the production of packaging from natural resources.

This paper is devoted to the topic of obtaining substitutes for natural aggregates in the city mining system. An article draws attention to the adverse effects of natural aggregate mining on the environment and presents its alternative based on processing waste mineral materials into aggregate form. Referring to the examples presented in the literature, technical possibilities of producing recycled aggregates from waste concrete, ceramic and glass materials were indicated. The system of collecting waste directly from potential users was also presented and the adaptation processes which waste must undergo were described. The research part of the study consisted of analyses of the environmental impact of the processes of obtaining natural aggregates and production of their substitutes from waste in the city mining system. The LCA (life cycle assessment) method was used to carry out the analyses. Using the available databases, calculations of the environmental impact of both processes were performed. The comparison of the obtained results proved that despite the unfavourable additional environmental effects caused by the adaptation processes required for waste, the environmental impact of the rational production of aggregates from recyclates is favourable, and such activities should be recommended for implementation in the industry.

A technological quality method was used to compare two methods of sodium tripolyphosphate (STPP) production. The first method was the classic spray method (CM) and the second was a dry single-stage method (DSM). The assessment criteria were environmental, based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) evaluation and economic, based on production costs. The technological quality assessment of CM was 6.5% lower in comparison to DSM. LCA environmental analyses showed that the partial environmental quality of DSM was lower by only 4.4% compared to CM. Partial economic quality was lower by 10.3%, mainly due to the lower energy costs (on average 52%) for DSM. The advantage of the new DSM method is the technological progress achieved, mainly due to the application of new technology, design, and apparatus solutions; thus, the basic elements of the activities proposed in the methodology allow for cleaner STPP production.

Opis:
In connection with the ongoing activities of the European Commission (EC) for the unification of the product market and the development of common methods for measuring environmental performance over the life cycle of products and organizations, guidelines for the environmental footprint methodology are being developed. Among the guidelines developed so far at European level, there are no guidelines for the energy sector, including the hydrocarbon extraction sector. Despite the lack thereof, it is necessary to start the preparatory stage now for their possible future introduction due to threats to the competitiveness of Polish enterprises and the competitive position of a given product on the market. In the 2013 Communication, the European Commission proposes two methods for measuring environmental performance. One concerns the environmental assessment of products, while the other concerns the environmental assessment for the organization. The article discusses the possibility of using the Life Cycle Assessment method (LCA) to assess the products environmental footprint (PEFs) and organizations (OEFs) related to oil and gas sector. LCA is considered to be one of the most objective and accurate methods of environmental assessment and its main purpose is to reduce negative environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle. The traditionally understood product life cycle includes stages, ranging from obtaining raw materials, through processes related to transport, production, to the use and post-use phase of a given product. Currently in Poland, LCA is not a widely known (practiced) tool, which is why there is a need to increase the involvement of the science sector (research, R&D and consulting centers) in order to encourage Polish enterprises to become interested in the issue of environmental life cycle assessment. Thanks to the LCA method, it is possible to assess the ecological effect of changes planned in the organization in various areas of its activity (technological, administrative, infrastructural). LCA may also be part of a strategic, multi-faceted analysis of the efficiency of the Polish oil and natural gas production sector.

The publication aims to assess the environmental performance of meat product and to point out the possibilities of improving the product quality in terms of its environmental impact. The research was performed within the CIRC4Life project on the example of ALIA company, Spain. The Life Cycle Assessment method and literature study were used for this purpose. The LCA was carried out for subsystems: feed production, pig housing, slaughtering, meat processing. Two scenarios: basic and improved were compared using the ReCiPe method. In the basic scenario, the highest impacts are attributed to agricultural land occupation 29%, climate change 34%, natural land transformation 11% and fossil depletion-11%. Animal feed production is the most critical phase. Comparative analysis of the scenarios showed that there is a potential for beneficial trade-offs between different impact categories by changing the processes and materials for feed production.

Opis:
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to analyse the possibilities of using life cycle assessment in circular economy. Direct applications of LCA are being considered, including product development and improvement, strategic planning, public policy making and marketing. Design/methodology/approach: Literature research of the subject was carried out. Findings: The possibilities and challenges of applying LCA were indicated. This methodology, in accordance with the provisions of the new circular economy action plan, is becoming increasingly important. Practical implications: A comparison of two or more products in terms of environmental impacts in the life cycle, desired by both companies and customers (in both business-to-business and business-to-client relations), is also difficult to do at the same time. First of all, it requires the use of uniform analytical assumptions. The article contains tips on how to solve this problem. Particular hopes can be associated with the implementation of the environmental footprint being developed by the European Commission. Social implications: The LCA can make a valuable contribution to public policy formulation because it allows policymakers to take into account potential unintended environmental consequences that otherwise cannot be predicted. Originality/value: An analysis of applying LCA was made in relation to the new circular economy action plan (issued in March 2020). Great emphasis was placed on the quantitative approach to the results obtained, which determines the relevance of the article.

Opis:
The article presents results of an input-output data inventory and life cycle assessment (LCA) for individual wastewater treatment plants (IWWTPs), considering their whole life cycle, including the stage of construction, use and end-of-life. IWWTPs located in the area of a medium-sized town in Poland, were assessed from a systemic perspective. The research was conducted basing on actual data concerning performance of 304 individual wastewater treatment plants in Żory. Environmental assessment was conducted with ReCiPe and TRACI methods. Greenhouse gases (GHG) emission, eutrophication, fossil fuel and metal depletion were calculated. The LCA was conducted basing on ISO 14040 standard with SimaPro 8 software and Ecoinvent 3 database. The system boundary ranged from cradle to grave. It was shown that, at the construction stage, GHG emission depends on the amount of used cement, polyethylene, concrete, PVC and polypropylene. At the use stage, the GHG emission is determined by the sewage treatment technology and application of a bio-reactor in IWWTPs. At the construction stage, the fossil fuel depletion is determined by the amount of used polyethylene, PVC, cement, polypropylene and concrete; while the metal depletion is determined by the amount of used stainless steel, copper and cast iron. Data inventory and LCA of IWWTPs are presented for the fi rst time. Conclusions of the work may support decisions taken by local governments concerning wastewater management in their area and promote and support solutions of high ecological standards.

This paper presents the results of an investigation carried out on the impacts of cobalt extraction process using a life cycle assessment by considering a cradle-to-gate system. Life cycle inventory data was collected from the EcoInvent and Australian Life cycle assessment database (AusLCI) and analysis were performed using SimaPro software employing the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD) method, and Cumulative Energy Demand method (CED) for per kg of cobalt production. Several impact categories are considered in the analysis i.e. global warming, ozone depletion, eutrophication, land use, water use, fossil fuels, minerals, human toxicity, ecotoxicity, and cumulative energy demand. The analysis results indicate that among the impact categories, eutrophication and global warming impacts are noteworthy. Medium voltage electricity used in cobalt production and the blasting operation appears to be causing most of the impact and emission into the environment. The sensitivity analysis was carried out using three different case scenarios by altering the electricity generation sources of UCTE (Synchronous Grid of Continental Europe) to investigate the proportional variation of impact analysis results. Furthermore, the impacts caused by cobalt production are compared with nickel and copper production processes to reveal their relative impacts on the environment and ecosystems.

Opis:
The use of fossil fuel sourced diesel underground has various associated health and environmental hazards, and additional energy demand and costs associated with necessary ventilation. One way to reduce these impacts is by utilizing a biodiesel-blend, which generates lower levels of harmful emissions from underground equipment and can be produced regionally, reducing the impact of transportation. Furthermore, this would help allow use of existing machinery during transition towards more widespread electrification underground. Therefore, the concept of an integrated supply and use chain within the mining industry is examined based on biodiesel from acidophilic photosynthetic microalgae cultivated using CO 2 in smelter off-gas. A life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to compare the environmental impacts of production, transportation, and end-use of fossil fuel sourced diesel to biodiesel-blended fuel across four underground metal ore mine sites (Canada, Poland, Zambia, and Australia). The outcomes from assessing four key environmental impact potentials (global warming, eutrophication, acidification and human toxicity) demonstrate the advantages of using biodiesel-blends. The integration of biodiesel resulted in changes of -22.5 to +22.8% (global warming), -6.1 to +27.3% (eutrophication), -18.9 to +26.3% (acidification), and -21.0 to -3.6% (human toxicity). The results showed reduction across all potentials for two mines and reduction in human toxicity potential for all sites.

Opis:
The worldwide move to introduce more automation into underground metal ore mining is currently aimed at improving both operational productivity and safety. A comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) was used as a novel approach to determine the beneficial impacts automation can also have on environmental performance, using data collected on mine site productivity and energy consumption. The LCA looked at four impact categories: global warming potential, acidification, eutrophication, and human toxicity. When comparing automated equipment to their traditional manual counterpart, all four impact categories experienced a reduction with automation and a subsequent improvement in sustainability performance. Global warming potential, for example, decreased by 18.3% over the mine life period, or 3.7 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2 eq.) per tonne of ore extracted. Environmental impact reductions were due primarily to lower diesel fuel consumption in the loading and haulage processes as well as a 27% shorter operational mine life leading to less years of mine and mine camp maintenance.

Niniejszy artykuł dotyczy efektywności energetycznej klimatyzowanego budynku wielorodzinnego oraz wpływu, jaki wywiera on na środowisko w całym cyklu życia. Do określenia efektywności energetycznej rozpatrywanego budynku, wykorzystano dedykowany program Audytor OZC 6.8 Pro. We wspominanym programie wykonano analizę energetyczną obiektu, na podstawie, której wskazano źródła największych strat ciepła oraz zaproponowano działania mające na celu obniżenie energochłonności budynku. Dodatkowo w artykule przedstawiono możliwości, jakie daje wbudowane do programu Audytor OZC 6.8 Pro narzędzie świadectw charakterystyki energetycznej.
This article concerns the energy efficiency of an air-conditioned multi-family building and the impact it has on the environment throughout the whole life cycle. The dedicated software, which is Auditor OZC 6.8 Pro, was used to calculate the energy efficiency of the building in question. In the mentioned software, energy analysis of the facility was carried out, based on which the sources of the most significant heat losses were indicated. Moreover, activities aimed at reducing the energy consumption of the building were proposed. Additionally, energy performance certificate is described and presented as one of the embedded possibilities offered by the Audit OZC 6.8 Pro program. Using the energy performance certificates, two technical systems were compared to a trigeneration system (also called as a combined system) and separated system, where all essential products are produced individually. On the basis of the obtained results, the effect of energy production on the size of indicators of the energy performance of a building through trigeneration and the separated economy was demonstrated. The following indicators were calculated: 1) indicator of the annual demand for usable energy (EU), 2) an indicator of the annual energy demand for final energy (EK), 3)indicator of the annual demandfor non-renewable primary energy (EP), 4) unit emission of carbon dioxide (ECO2). Finally, the assessment of the full life cycle of the analyzed building was performed. The environmental impact in full life cycle was carried out in SimaPro software. The use of LCA analysis with energy indicators was proposed as a method supporting the selection of the best construction solutions as friendly to humans and safe for the natural environment.
