Opis:
The paper analyzes the results of survey conducted in 2013 on a random group of 1000 Polish individuals with regard to bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) and selected species of mushrooms harvest. The research also evaluated the annual harvest value of selected non−timber forest products in Polish forests. The survey included questions on berry and mushroom harvest and also on harvested quantities of those non−timber forest products. The value of harvested non−timber forest products was estimated based on popular published sources of information related to prices in 2013. The harvest of bilberries was indicated in the survey by 180 respondents (18.0% of all respondents), who harvested 844 kg (on average 4.69 kg/respondent). The harvest of bilberries from the whole territory of Poland was estimated to 26.2 thousand tones and about 340.6 million PLN. Harvest of mushrooms was declared by 541 respondents (54.1% of total surveyed). They estimated their harvest to 2306 kg, which equals to 4.26 kg/person. In relation to the whole population of adults in Poland, the volume of mushrooms harvested in 2013 is estimated to about 71.4 thousand tones. The value of wild mushrooms harvested in Poland was evaluated to 763 million PLN. The value of non−timber forest products estimated per forest area was about 121 PLN/ha, which is about 13% of the mean harvested timber value in 2013. The research indicates large differences between published statistical data on purchased volumes of non−timber forest products and amounts estimated from public surveys. The lack of knowledge about the scale of non−timber forest products use hinders estimation of their real significance for people and economy. However, obtained research results show that this significance is high.

Opis:
The increasing social demand for food products collecting from the forests has beem observed currently. It should be assumed that one of the more and more important non−wood forest products in Poland is silver birch sap. Research in this area should concern not only the proper methods of its collection and yield, but also the rules of selecting forest stands and trees for its collection, as well in the context of protection of forest ecosystems, especially the quality of the obtained product and the safety of its consumption. The aim of this study was to examine the influence of air temperature on the daily volume of collected birch sap, determine the dependence of the volume of sap obtained on the selected physical parameters of the sap, as well as determine if there are changes in the values of the parameters tested as a function of time. It was not proved that the volume of the daily sap leak is related to the parameter of the refractive value, dry matter and electrolytical conductivity. It was found that the volume of the sap obtained is not significantly affected by the temperature on the day of the collection nor at the night immediately preceding the leak, while the relation between the intensity of the leak and thermal conditions several tens of hours earlier was indicated. Moreover, it was not shown that there was an optimal, determinable term in which birch sap is characterized by the most favorable parameters in terms of suitability for the production of birch syrup. It was also found that in the case of commercial birch sap harvesting on large scale, it is advisable to harvest and combine the sap from as many trees as possible. The necessity of further studies on the food and industrial usefulness of birch sap, including geographical, habitat and age variability of birch stands was underlined as well.

Opis:
The article presents an analysis of the birch market in Poland in 2008−2012, including the acquisition (supply) of birch wood, the income structure, prices of birch wood, the structure of birch wood recipients and the volume of purchased timber. The necessary materials were obtained from the Forest Data Bank (BDL) and the State Forests Information System (SILP). The S2 wood assortment representing more than 54% of all assortment groups is most often harvested in Poland. Next come M1 representing 14%, as well as S4 and WC – each with share slightly exceeding 11%. The vast majority of the harvested and handled birch wood is in the group of medium−sized assortments S representing 66%, and in the group of small−sized assortments M representing 14%. Birch wood classified as large−sized W totals 20%. Similarly, timber assortments from group S2 also generate the largest portion of revenues (over 50% of total revenues from birch wood sales). High fluctuations in the prices of certain groups of birch wood assortments constitute a significant problem from the point of view of both the State Forests and wood consumers. A possible reduction in the supply of wood of this species in the future may deepen this phenomenon. Average sales prices of birch wood on the Polish market are lower than the prices obtained by timber producers in the neighbouring countries. The price differences in favour of foreign timber producers reach up to 20% and relate to roundwood in different quality and size classes. The exceptionally high technical quality of birch wood in our country does not translate to higher prices per cubic meter of raw timber in the domestic turnover. The sharp increase in the demand for a special type of fibres for the manufacture of many products characterized by exceptional strength (i.e. products from polymers) and textiles with special insulating properties, as well as the production of certain grades of paper and board, will stimulate the consumption of birch wood in the future.

Opis:
The qualitative and dimensional variability of wood material affects its possible uses for industrial purposes. Attempts to order the rules of raw material classification contributed to the introduction of qualitative and dimensional standards approved by the Polish Committee for Standardization. Large−size softwood is the main raw timber material in Poland. The adjustment of requirements and rules of raw material sorting to changing market needs was caused by the necessity of prompt reaction to technological changes. Although standards were adjusted to the EU requirements, the State Forests National Forest Holding creates the rules of large−size wood classification through the corporation legal acts – the ordinances of the General Director. The article presents the beginning of the process of large−size softwood trade standardization in Poland. It indicates the rationality of meeting the requirements of qualitative, dimensional and purpose−related classification in the era of rapid changes in the demand of the industry. After the rebirth of the Polish state, there were attempts to improve rational use of wood. This goal was achieved by introduction of the rules of assortment classification for available forms of material. Verification of wood structure defects and properties in selection of large−size assortments resulted in consecutive amendments facilitating the procedures of selection of adequate quality and thickness classes in large−size wood. This enabled gradual adjustment of assortment classification to the needs of the wood industry, which is the recipient of wood material. Due to the increasing dynamics of changes it was necessary to develop new forms of wood division and classification. The role of product standards was gradually taken over by technical conditions developed by the State Forests, which is in charge of major material resources in Poland. This form of verification of the principles of wood division and classification guarantees prompt adjustment to the needs of clients on the wood market, which are changing at an increasing rate.

Opis:
The research concerned the implementation of tasks in the field of harvesting timber in 2008−2012 in pure pine stands aged 10−140. Numerical data from the SILP database were used for calculating the average price of timber in the intermediate harvest. The data on the volume harvested covered late cleaning, early thinning and late thinning. The assortment structure concerned the following groups of large− (WA0, WA1, WB0, WB1, WC0, WC1 and WD), medium− (S10, S11, S2A, S2B, S3A, S3B and S4) as well as small−sized (M1 and M2) assortment groups. The data on the size and value of wood assortments sold across the country concerned the year 2011 and were used to calculate the average price of wood in age subclasses according to the site quality described with site index class. Subsequently, for each site quality class polynomial equations of the trend line was determined and average timber price for each age subclass was calculated for small−, medium− and large−sized assortments. The analysis showed that S2 is the most frequently harvested assortment in the intermediate cuts in Scots pine stands, whose share depending on the site quality class is at the level of 65.7−72.7% of total harvest. The share of small−sized assortments decreases with age in all site quality classes. The opposite tendency is seen for large−sized assortments, whose share decreases with the deterioration of the site quality. Fraction of medium−sized assortments reaches its peak at the age of ca 45 in IA site index class and the shift in the peak with age is associated with the deterioration of the site quality. The higher the site quality, the higher the prices of assortments in the intermediate harvest. This trend occurs in all age subclasses.

Opis:
The State Forests in Poland operate according to the principles of sustainable forest management combining and fulfilling diverse functions. Wood production is one of them. In this context, the question arises whether the species composition of forest stands has a greater impact on timber sales than the optimization of the assortment structure of harvested timber. The aim of the paper is to present the dynamics of prices, volume and value of timber sold by the State Forests and to examine the impact of the price and volume on the value of timber sales. The analysis of the dynamics measures was based on the data in the financial reports published annually on the websites of the State Forests as well as on the announcements of the Central Statistical Office in Poland on the average price of timber, calculated from the average price of timber sold by forest districts in the first three quarters of the year. The aggregate indices were calculated using the data on the volume, prices and value of the sold timber included in the State Forests Information System. The data were obtained by dividing wood assortments and species into groups. The analysis focused on years 2012−2014. It included seven tree species: pine, spruce, fir, oak, beech, alder and birch as well as the most common groups of wood assortments: WA, WB, WC, WD, WBCK, WCK, S1, S2, S4, M1 and M2, for which the weighted average price of timber and the amount of timber sold were calculated in individual years. Of the analysed characteristics (price, volume, value), the average rate of changes in timber prices was the lowest and amounted to 1.9% per year. The volume of timber offered on the market increased by 3.01% annually. The cumulative effect of the increase in the price and volume of timber offered for sale was 5.94% of the annual value of timber sold.

Opis:
The objective of the study was to determine the quantitative and valuable potential of wood resources of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) and Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in individual regional directorates of the State Forests (RDSFs) in Poland. We used data from the State Forests Information System database (values for the end of 2014) to determine the amount of the resources of the analysed species in forests under the State Forests management. The monetary value of black locust and Douglas fir resources was determined using both the indicator method and on the basis of sales prices of individual assortments. The occurrence, and hence the resources of black locust and Douglas fir in our country are characterized by considerable spatial diversity. Generally speaking, studied tree species are of minor importance in Polish forests as far as area and volume are concerned, but both species can the most often and in the large abundance be found in the western and northern Poland. The average sale price of wood of the tested species varied a lot in individual regional directorates of the State Forests (fig.). In the case of black locust the average sale price ranged from 99 PLN/m3 in RDSF Szczecinek to 151 PLN/m3 in RDSF Krakow, while for Douglas fir the values from 59 PLN/m3 in RDSF Łódź to 277 PLN/m3 in RDSF Katowice were obtained. The total value of black locust timber resources was assessed by the sale price method at PLN 262.4 million, and by the indicator method at PLN 186.4 million. In the case of Douglas fir timber, these values were much higher and amounted to PLN 375.0 and 309.2 million, respectively. The highest value of the studied species stands was noted in the RDSF with the largest amount of their resources.

The article depicts the methodology of long−term financial and economic forecast for the State Forests. The method of forecasting Polish raw timber requirement was confined to determining the demand for timber materials whose use depends on the demand for final timber products. Timber price forecasts were carried out with the application of several methods and their reliability was evaluated using an expert’s method. The methods of assessing the timber harvest potential in the State Forests NFH in the forecast period were based on the forest management planning guidelines. Forest administration cost forecast variants were prepared. The forecasted income and expenses, as well as the financial result of the State Forests NFH were included in Excel forecast spreadsheets. The completed forecast was used in 2007 by the management of the State Forests NFH for salary negotiations with trade unions and for negotiating prices of services with forest companies.
