    Even if the derivation of the meaning ‘scamp, scallywag, imp’ < ‘will-o’-the-wisp’ is generally imaginable (albeit not self-evident) it is assumed here that this change is actually based on addition of a foreign meaning to a German one, rather than on semantic evolution.

    The status of Albanian in relation to the other Balkan languagesAlbanian has been in contact with other languages almost in all areas in which it is spoken, whereas the relationship with each of them differs from place to place. This study aims at describing the status of Albanian depending on its place of use and on the contacts it has with other Balkan languages. Status języka albańskiego w porównaniu z innymi językami bałkańskimiJęzyk albański pozostaje w stałym kontakcie z innymi językami niemal na całym swoim terytorium. Natomiast relacje międzyjęzykowe są różne w zależności od konkretnego miejsca. W tym artykule omówiono status języka albańskiego, w poszczególnych lokacjach jego użycia oraz jego relacje z innymi miejscowymi językami.

    Slavic‑Turkish linguistic relations are generally only discussed unilaterally, focusing on the Turkish influence on Slavic and neglecting the opposite direction. Thus far, no more than two relatively extensive essays (the larger one counting 44 pages) have been devoted to Slavic loanwords in Turkish. The present paper aims to outline the state of research on this topic. It begins with a comparison of the two essays, then it examines several of somewhat atypical words, as well as a handful of suffixes, and it closes with a very brief presentation of the Slavic influence on case government of Gagauz verbs.

    Opis:
    The origin of Proto-Slavic palatal(ized) consonants has interested many linguists. Some of them have tried to connect palatality and velarity of Slavic consonants with the influence of Turkic consonant palatalization or velarization dependent on vowel harmony. This paper is a first study allowing for Turkological point of view and striving to show that there still are many doubts about the Proto- -Turkic influence on Proto-Slavic.

    Opis:
    Semantic interference of languages and translator’s “false friends” This contribution deals with lexical and semantic interferences leading to transfers and borrowings from the source into the target language. We analyse the linguistic and extra-linguistic factors of language contact and language interference, especially in the context of bilingualism / multilingualism, produced by globalization. Positive and negative interferences are established in relations between French, English and Ukrainian. A particular attention is drawn to the problem of “false friends” in translation, and some recommendations are given to identify them. Stress is laid on using semantic, stylistic, pragmatic, distributional and formal criteria to distinguish international words.

    Opis:
    The archive numbers of the German paper Lodzer Zeitung, which was issued in Łódź between 1863–1915, allow presumptions regarding the life in the city of Łódź in the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The paper prints official announcements and implements this way the plans of the current authorities in the city. The texts show at the same time the multicultural nature of the society in Łódź, which has build the industrial metropolis in the 19th century.The issues of the Lodzer Zeitung are furthermore an important witness to political events in Europe and the world, as well as express the bond of the Germans in Łódź towards their heritage and the city they have devoted their lives to.
    Archiwalne teksty niemieckojęzycznej gazety „Lodzer Zeitung” wydawanej w Łodzi w latach 1863–1915 pozwalają snuć przypuszczenia dotyczące życia w tym mieście w drugiej połowie XIX i na początku XX w. Gazeta realizowała założenia ówczesnych władz miasta poprzez publikację obwieszczeń urzędowych. Wiele tekstów pokazuje multikulturowy charakter społeczeństwa łódzkiego, które swym życiem i pracą budowało w XIX w. metropolię przemysłową. Wydania „Lodzer Zeitung” są ponadto archiwalnym świadectwem ważnych wydarzeń politycznych w Europie i na świecie, a także wyrazem przywiązania łódzkich Niemców tak do kultury, z której pochodzą, jak i miejsca, z którym związali swoje życie.
