Opis:
The presented review concerns Krzysztof Siwczyk’s latest book of poetry. Jasnopis, published under the imprint of a5 publisher in 2016, refers to the subject matter that the poet has dealt with so far; however, clothing it a new, lighter, less complicated dress; following the current trends and at the same time resigning from all extravagance. The unpredictable world was closed in a quite predictable and tamed form. Yet, the present review focuses not only on the issues raised by the poems included in the volume, but also on the analysis of the poetic mechanisms employed by the author, the examination of the dialogue which Siwczyk establishes with other contemporary writers. Moreover, the reviewer attempts to situate the latest collection of the Silesian writer on the map of his previous poetic works.

Opis:
The classical definition of metaphor by Aristotle, though imperfect, survived many centuries. However, in 1980 the book of Mark Johnson and George Lakoff, Metaphors We Live By, has changed the view of metaphor and its role in the communication and poetics. One-shot metaphor, in the terminology of Lakoff, is a metaphor for single use which most often relates to the language of poetry. Poetry as a discourse is inherently subjective and highly creative and therefore, without any restrictions, may represent unique and surprising images, that are unusual in the everyday communication. In the cycle of poems Небесные стропы by Inna Lisnianskaya we are dealing with a creative combination of two metaphors LIFE IS A JOURNEY and MOVEMENT IS A CHANGE, where Lisnianskaya also used the picture of the angels hanging on the ropes in order to depict a man struggling with a number of cultural and emotional dependences.

The paper raises the question of the extent to which Wittgenstein’s philosophy can be read as a philosophy of culture. The answer aims at grasping the conceptual bonds between three aspects of Wittgenstein’s thought: first, his taking both language and thinking to be expressions of a ‘form of life’ (or culture); second, his taking philosophical theories to result from some disorders that occur in ‘language games’; and third, his critique and rejection of the scientific and technical civilization. The paper advances the thesis that the task of bringing words back from their metaphysical to their everyday use – recommended by Wittgenstein – can be understood as a critique of scientism and culture dominated by scientific and technical rationality.

In my paper I intend to uncover the relationship between ethics and literature. The aforementioned issue is connected to ’ethical turn’ — new orientation in literary studies, which was introduced in the nineties of 20th century. In order to uncover its source of inspiration, I refer to Lévinas’s works, such as Reality and its Shadow, The poet’s vision, Totality and Infinity, Otherwise than Being. I advocate the view that not only Lévinas’s concept of language, but also his account of poetry and responsibility underlie ethical criticism. Therefore, they are regarded as crucial to understand this new approach to literary studies. To illustrate my thesis, I attempt to interpret literary works, i.e. Wordsworth’s and Coetzee’s in light of Lévinas’s concepts.

Opis:
This study explores different variations on the theme of “memory” in Yves Bonnefoy’s poetry and translations. In his latest works, the poet bequeaths to his readers his childhood memories entrusting them with a mission with which he invests poetry: to celebrate, against oblivion, the “memory” of the experience shared with others. Moreover, memory is both the source and the process of poetic creation, as his practise as a translator also demonstrates. If the task of the translator, according to Bonnefoy, coincides with a search, an exploration of the depths of the sea that is every language, in order to bring forth from the dark the light of a restorative word, then, by translating the verses of other poets, Bonnefoy relives the experience of poetry through a new poetic act, recalling each time the intuition and the emotion.

Opis:
Polish poetry of the 1990s was shaped primarily by the works of Andrzej Sosnowski, an author who introduced the New York tradition into our language. The poet Adam Zdrodowski, who debuted in 2005, is often referred to as Sosnowski’s most capable student and it is for this reason that literary criticism fails to accord Sosnowski’s poetry the attention it deserves. In this paper I strive to demonstrate that Zdrodowski is first and foremost a student of John Ashbery; it should be noted that the author of Przygody, etc. reads the New York poetry in a very different way to Sosnowski.

Opis:
The essay investigates the notion of palpable language in Seamus Heaney’s poetry. It is here argued that Heaney’s particular imaginative strength lies in his ability to fuse the words and the world, whether it is the place that is being evoked, the animal or the material reality. The focus is here laid on Heaney’s celebrated poems of place names (Dinnseanchas) but also on his less critically appreciated lyrics that seek to unite the word with animals and, finally, on the few poems that envision what might be termed an incarnated language. As a result, Heaney’s life-long ideal, whereby “what survives translation [is] true,” is shown to develop towards a language that could become, as nearly as possible, a tangible presence in our experience of the world.

Opis:
The paper examines the liaison of key motifs and ways represented in the poetry of Taras Melnychuk through the concepts of trauma and violence. Body, home, and language are the main constituent elements of the indigenous space, and their dramatic destruction is a crucial motif in Melnychuk’s poetry. On the one hand, the poet appeals to the holistic, consistent, formulaic language of folklore and mythology as to a mirror of an idyllic and non-fragmented world. On the other hand, dismemberment and fragmentation conceptualized as an act of violence committed against holistic language become the only way of describing the perverse and violent world in circumstances with no language for its expression at all.

Opis:
The article is focused on the problems of national identity, self-representation, and memory re-articulation in Oksana Zabuzhko’s poetry. Language, speaking, and word as well as silence are conceptualized as key concepts in verse by the 1980s generation of Ukrainian poets to whom Oksana Zabuzhko belongs. Speaking and silence in 1980s poetry can be treated not only as concepts or metaphors but also as a literary strategy or even as the form of resistance in the late Soviet era. The article is structured as the gradation of motives from speaking to silence in Zabuzhko’s poetry. The analyses includes the following subthemes: non-verbal language represented by sounds, gestures, and poses, verbal language as existing between sacrum and profanum, speechlessness, and silence.

Opis:
This article argues that, strictly speaking, from its inception with the ancient Greeks and for all time, philosophy and science are identical and consist in an essential relationship between a specific type of understanding of the human person as possessed of an intellectual soul capable of being habituated and a psychologically-independent composite whole, or organization. It maintains, further, that absence of either one of the extremes of this essential relationship cannot be philosophy/science and, if mistaken for such and applied to the workings of cultural institutions, will generate anarchy within human culture and make leadership excellence impossible to achieve. Finally, it argues that only a return to this “common sense” understanding of philosophy can generate the leadership excellence that can save the West from its current state of cultural and civilizational anarchy.

Opis:
Since most pressing today on a global scale is to be able to unite religion, philosophy, and science into parts of a coherent civilizational whole, and since the ability to unite a multitude into parts of a coherent whole essentially requires understanding the natures of the things and the way they can or cannot be essentially related, this paper chiefly considers precisely why the modern world has been unable to effect this union. In so doing, it argues that the chief cause of this inability to unite these cultural natures has been because the contemporary world, and the West especially, has lost its understanding of philosophy and science and has intentionally divorced from essential connection to wisdom. Finally, it proposes a common sense way properly to understand these natures, reunite them to wisdom, and revive Western and global civilization.
