Celem artykułu jest próba reinterpretacji pojęcia tożsamości pogranicza jako kategorii socjologii pogranicza. Przedstawiona koncepcja, w nawiązaniu do istoty tożsamości oraz pogranicza, uwzględnia łącznie zarówno tożsamość większości, jak i mniejszości kulturowych zamieszkujących na pograniczach. Została tak przedstawiona, aby mogła mieć zastosowanie do realizacji badań empirycznych. W zakończeniu Autor wyróżnił trzy typy tożsamości zbiorowych, określanych jako tożsamości pogranicza: tożsamość wiążącą, tożsamość pograniczną oraz tożsamość intergraniczną.
The aim of the article is an attempt to reinterpret the concept of borderland identity as a category of borderland sociology. The presented concept, in reference to the essence of the identity and the borderland, takes into account both the identity of the majority as well as cultural minorities living on the borderlands. It has been presented so that it could be applicable to the implementation of empirical research. In conclusion, the Author distinguished three types of collective identities defined as borderline identities: binding identity, borderland identity and inter-border identity.

In the paper, the relation between a borderland region and the social identity of borderland inhabitants is considered. A question is posed whether the borderland has a stronger impact on the social identity of its inhabitants or the direction of the impact is opposite. The answer to this question is sought in the studies of borderland theoreticians and researchers, and in a reconstruction of how this relation is contemplated by them. The analyses lead to the conclusion that the borderland, its characteristics and properties undoubtedly have a stronger impact on the identity of its inhabitants than their identity and its specificity affect the borderland. In the conclusions, a thesis is formulated about the borderland effect, which is a sociological unobservable variable, whose impact, among others, is manifested in specific social identity profiling of its inhabitants.

W ostatnich dekadach powstało kilka subdyscyplin różnych dyscyplin naukowych, dla których pogranicze jest głównym przedmiotem rozważań - należą do nich socjologia, antropologia i pedagogika. Mogły one powstać dopiero wtedy, gdy znawcy tej problematyki uporali się z definicją pogranicza, dla której za punkt wyjścia należałoby uznać filozoficzne, szerokie do tego problemu podejście. Tu pogranicze jawi się jako słowo-klucz współczesnej humanistyki i dotyczy wielu paradygmatów współczesnej nauki: to spotkanie „Ja” - czyli jednostki, grupy, kultury - z innym: nieuniknione i stanowiące o sensie życia. Pogranicze to spotkanie dwóch różniących się paradygmatów podmiotów, to każdy dyskurs dotyczący relacji Ja-Ty (Inny). Przedmiotem rozważań w niniejszym opracowaniu jest kształtowanie się wiedzy o pograniczu na styku dwóch podejść: edukacji międzykulturowej jako subdyscypliny pedagogicznej oraz antropologii pogranicza jako subdyscypliny antropologii kulturowej. Te kierunki poszukiwań wydają się dosyć odległe od siebie, a jednak w określonym kontekście podobieństwa między nimi rysują się dosyć wyraźnie. Kontekst ten to miejsce uprawiania nauki: między innymi w zamiejscowej jednostce Uniwersytetu Śląskiego ulokowanej w Cieszynie, a więc w sercu polsko-czeskiego i tym samym czesko-polskiego pogranicza. Obecne tu pedagogika i etnologia jako kierunki studiów wypracowały w procesie współpracy i wzajemnych inspiracji oryginalną wiedzę, która stała się podstawą kształtowania się nowych kierunków badań nad pograniczem. Obydwie dyscypliny wyrosły z jednego źródła, ich geneza i drogi rozwoju są nie tylko podobne, ale można powiedzieć pokrewne. Dlatego warto tym aspektom kształtowania się wiedzy o pograniczu poświęcić czas i miejsce w publikacji naukowej.
Over the last decades, a few subdisciplines of some scientific disciplines have come into being which mostly explore borderlands - e.g. sociology, anthropology, and pedagogy. They could originate only when the specialists in this field had finished their work on the definition of borderland, in which the starting point should be the broad philosophical approach to this problem. Here, the borderland appears as a keyword for modern humanities, referring to many paradigms of contemporary science - it is the meeting of “me” (an individual, group, culture) with the Other, an inevitable encounter which determines the sense of life. The borderland is a meeting of two different paradigms of subjects and every discourse pertains to the relationship Me - You (the Other). The presented study is focused on the shaping of the knowledge concerning the borderland in the contact site between two approaches: of intercultural education as a pedagogical subdiscipline and of anthropology of borderland as a subdiscipline of cultural anthropology. These research orientations seem to be far away from each other - however, in a particular context, the similarities become quite clear. This context is the place where science is practiced - in the unit of the University of Silesia which is located in Cieszyn, in the heart of the Polish-Czech and, therefore, of the Czech-Polish borderland. Education and ethnology as university courses have elaborated - in the process of collaboration and mutual inspiration - original knowledge and interesting research orientations which stem from it. Both disciplines have originated from the same source, their genesis and developmental paths are not only similar but also related. Thus, these aspects of shaping the knowledge of the borderland are worth devoting time and space in a scientific publication.

Polish musicologist and author Danuta Gwizdalanka, titled her publication Mieczysław Wajnberg: Composer from Three Worlds (Poznań, 2013). Wajnberg (1919–1996) was a Polish composer with Jewish roots who spent most of his life in USSR. Without any doubt, Wajnberg can be named “the composer from the borderland” due to his “hybrid identity”, which was one of the most important reasons preventing appreciation of Wajnberg’s creative activity both during life and after death. The main ideas of the paper are focused on the “category of borderland” and its representation in Wajnberg’s biography and output. According to the typology proposed by Krzysztof Zajas, Wajnberg’s live and works can be considered in the frame of following types of borderland: interdisciplinary, spatial, psychological, existential, sociological and mythological. Through the prism of “borderland’s category”, Wajnberg’s creative activity shows itself as a very individual and invaluable testimony of his times (far away from eclectic and epigonic in relation to music of Dmitri Shostakovich), unique on the scale of world music literature.

Artykuł przedstawia tematykę związaną z realizacją projektu badawczego podejmującego zagadnienie podmiotowości i tolerancji wśród młodzieży na pograniczu kultur. Młodość jest czasem określania swojej tożsamości, która jest trudna do określenia w okresie zmian globalnych i lokalnych. Przedstawiono wartości preferowane przez młodzież wiejską regionu oraz ich wizję świata i próby określenia własnego miejsca w społeczeństwie. Badania były wspólnym projektem polsko-czeskim, w którym badano młodzież i lokalnych liderów wiejskich.
The article brings up an issue (related to research project), which concentrates on the problem of subjectivity and tolerance among the young people on the borderland of cultures. The youth is the time of defining people’s own identity, however nowadays this process is difficult to be conducted in the face of global and local changes. Carried out research shows values preferred by the young people of the country region, their vision of the world and their attempt to define their own place in the society. Research was a common Polish-Czech project. The investigation group consisted of young people and local country-leaders.

This article discloses scientific, organizational, didactic and literary activity of the most outstanding Belarusian scientist, a professor of the University of Warsaw and, for many years, the head of the Department of Belarusian Studies – Alexander Barshchewski. What is focused on in the search for the mechanisms of constructing young people’s identity is the role and significance of the socio-cultural environment and formal and non-formal intercultural education, which supports individuals in the unceasing creation of their own Self, in understanding the world and organizing positive intercultural relations. In the theoretical framework of the undertaken considerations, the following concepts are referred to: J. Kozielecki’s concept of the multidimensional human, J. Nikitorowicz’s concept of constantly created identity, T. Lewowicki’s theory of identity behaviours, and M. Sobecki’s concept of identification profiles. The assumption is made that shaping the multidimensional identity of the young first of all requires cultural rooting, educational activities and the support of educational policy. Against the background of the research conducted systematically for 25 years among the youth from the Polish-Czech borderland, the dynamics is shown of shaping the young generation’s feeling of identity. Moreover, the intensity of identifications is diagnosed as well as young people’sidentification profiles, which provide information on interrelations between particularidentification dimensions in declarations of a person. The present-day conflict between Russia and Ukraine has lead to drastic changes both in official foreign policies and in the population’s attitude bringing the two nations to the point of a cultural and civilizational split. At the same time, the bordering regions were always known for their hybrid identities manifested, among other means, via specific axiological and behavioral patterns. In our paper we will study the changes of values across the Russia-Ukraine border to answer the question whether the borderlands witness the same cultural and civilizational split as the countries or whether we can talk about more stable and resilient border identities.
Artykuł dotyczy obecnego konfliktu między Rosją i Ukrainą, który doprowadził do drastycznych zmian zarowno w oficjalnych politykach zagranicznych, jak i postawach ludności, stawiając dwa narody w obliczu rozłamu kulturowego i cywilizacyjnego. Równocześnie obszary graniczące zawsze były znane z manifestowania hybrydowych tożsamości, między innymi przez specyficzne systemy aksjologiczne i wzory zachowań. W prezentowanej pracy autorzy przedstawią wyniki badań dotyczących zmiany wartości na pograniczu rosyjsko-ukraińskim. Odpowiadają na pytanie, czy pogranicze to stało się świadkiem takiego samego podziału kulturowego i cywilizacyjnego, jaki ma miejsce w obu krajach, czy raczej można mówić o bardziej stabilnych i elastycznych tożsamościach na pograniczu. Na podstawie badań, formułują tezę wskazującą na to, że reprezentacje wspólnych tożsamości stopniowo zacierają się w kolektywnych wyobrażeniach mieszkańców pogranicza rosyjsko-ukraińskiego, wykazując rozbieżności w zewnętrznych i wewnętrznych stereotypach dotyczących treści symbolicznej

The undertaken study is aimed at presenting the knowledge and research experiences concerning developmental tasks and the borderland, as well as stimulating the discussion which might result in a more conscious approach and application of these categories in the context of pedagogy. The author presents a report from some studies conducted in the Southern borderland. The text becomes a part of the debate on the tasks of pedagogy – the education aimed at supporting the development of youth. The research into fulfilling developmental tasks, shaping youth’s identity and its many determinants constitute an important field of pedagogy. These studies enable the recognition of the real barriers for individual development in the social and cultural dimension, as well as the efficient or inefficient strategies of overcoming them.
Tekst ten włącza się w debatę nad zadaniami pedagogiki, edukacji na rzecz wspierania rozwoju młodzieży. Jego celem jest prezentacja wiedzy i doświadczeń badawczych nad zadaniami rozwojowymi i pograniczem oraz pobudzanie do dyskusji, której rezultatem może być bardziej świadome ujmowanie i wykorzystywanie tych kategorii w pedagogice. Autorka przedstawia raport z badań młodzieży na pograniczu południowym. Wyniki tych badań, w dwóch okresach pomiarowych, wskazały z jednej strony na względne podobieństwo zadań rozwojowych, konstruowania tożsamości młodzieży żyjącej na pograniczu południowym, z drugiej zaś – na różnice w poziomie ich wypełniania. Wypełnianie zadań rozwojowych, konstruowanie tożsamości młodzieży i ich uwarunkowania to ważny obszar pedagogiki. Pozwala na rozpoznanie rzeczywistych barier rozwoju indywidualnego w płaszczyźnie społecznej i kulturowej oraz skutecznych czy też nieskutecznych strategii ich przekraczania.

Autorka punktem wyjścia swojej refleksji uczyniła cytaty z powieści Evy Tvardy i Horsta Bienka, które egzemplifikują trudne doświadczenia Ślązaków wynikające z politycznych decyzji wobec Śląska, które podejmowane były przez władze polskie, niemieckie i czechosłowackie. Przywołane z literatury cytaty konstruują kontekst, który pozwala zobiektywizować zasadnicze dla artykułu pytania: „Czyj jest Śląsk” i jak polityczna walka o Śląsk, którą w swojej historii toczyły Polska, Niemcy i Czechosłowacja, rekonstruuje tożsamość etniczną Ślązaków? Autorka korzysta z myśli Ivana Čolovicia, z której wyprowadza koncepcję pogranicza jako ziemi podatnej na amputację, a także koncepcję tożsamości posttraumatycznej jako tożsamości bolesnej. Na podstawie literacko opisanych doświadczeń śląskości Horsta Bienka autorka podejmuje próbę rekonstrukcji fenomenu śląskości, jako tego, co w efekcie konstruuje śląską tożsamość etniczną. Bezpośrednim przedmiotem analizy i interpretacji są teksty Horsta Bienka, „Brzozy i wielkie piece. Dzieciństwo na Górnym Śląsku” oraz „Podróż w krainę dzieciństwa”.
The starting point for the author’s reflections are quotes from the novels by Eva Tvrda and Horst Bienek, which illustrate the difficult experiences of Silesians resulting from the decisions of the Polish, German and Czechoslovak authorities pertaining to Silesia. Quotations from literature construct a context that allows to objectify the questions relevant to the article, namely “Whose is Silesia and how does the political struggle for Silesia that Poland, Germany and Czechoslovakia fought throughout their history reconstruct ethnic identity of Silesians? The author refers to the ideas of Ivan Čolović, from which she derives the concept of the borderland as a land prone to amputation, as well as the concept of post-traumatic identity as a painful identity. On the basis of the literary experiences of Silesia by Horst Bienek, the author attempts to reconstruct the phenomenon of Silesia, which in effect constructs the Silesian ethnic identity. The texts by Horst Bienek, “Birches and Blast Furnaces. Childhood in Upper Silesia” and “Journey to the Land of Childhood” are direct objects of analysis and interpretation.

Dążenia niepodległościowe Katalonii coraz silniej zwracają uwagę badaczy i obserwatorów europejskiej sceny politycznej. Ewentualny podział Hiszpanii może mieć konsekwencje dla całej Europy i Unii Europejskiej. Jednakże mówiąc o ewentualnym przyszłym państwie katalońskim, sprowadza się na ogół jego wyobrażenie do obszaru obecnej Wspólnoty Autonomicznej Katalonii. Tymczasem zarówno korzenie historyczno-kulturowe Katalonii, jak i aspiracje katalońskich nacjonalistów sięgają o wiele dalej. Katalońska doktryna narodowa, opierająca się na kulturowej koncepcji tzw. Krajów Katalońskich zakłada bowiem zjednoczenie wszystkich ziem katalońskojęzycznych. Choć nie należy spodziewać się realizacji tego postulatu w ciągu najbliższych dziesięcioleci, warto przeanalizować, w jaki sposób te podstawy doktrynalne wpływają na obecną politykę władz regionu oraz postawy społeczne. Tym bardziej, iż Katalonia pozostaje interesującym przykładem wykorzystania możliwości, jakie daje współpraca transgraniczna w zjednoczonej Europie oraz przyczynkiem do refleksji na temat tego, w jaki sposób polityka regionalna Unii Europejskiej już doprowadziła do zmiany ról poszczególnych aktorów na europejskiej scenie politycznej. W niniejszym artykule autorka przedstawi źródła koncepcji Krajów Katalońskich oraz jej współczesne konotacje, a także przeanalizuje obecne powiązania pomiędzy regionami, wchodzącymi w skład Països Catalans ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Wspólnoty Autonomicznej Katalonii oraz departamentu Pyrénées Orientales.
Aspirations dor independence of Catalonia are increasingly draw the attention of researchers and observers of the European political scene. Possibly division of Spain could have consequences for all of Europe and the European Union. However, visions of a possible future Catalan state, comes down generally the idea to the area of the current Autonomous Community of Catalonia. Meanwhile, both the historical and cultural roots of Catalonia and the Catalan nationalist aspirations date back much deeper. Catalan national doctrine, which is based on the cultural concept of so-called Catalan Countries, presupposes the unification of all the catalan-speaking lands. Although we should not expect to comply with this requirement in the coming decades, it is worth to consider how these doctrinal foundations influence the current policy of the regional authorities and social attitudes. What is more, Catalonia remains an interesting example of the use of the opportunities offered by cross-border cooperation in a united Europe and a contribution to the reflection on how the European Union regional policy has already led to changes in the role of different actors on the European political scene. In this article, the author will present the source of the concept of the Catalan Countries and its contemporary connotations, as well as analyze the current relationship between the regions belonging to the Països Catalans with particular emphasis on the Autonomous Community of Catalonia and the department of Pyrénées Orientales.
