The growing number of the elderly in many countries has made it necessary to develop a wellthought-out policy. In the European Union, the concept of lifelong learning is being promoted which includes third-age universities aimed to activate the elderly through education, learning, expanding knowledge and developing interests, as well as a way of actively spending free time and meeting new people. Third age universities (U3A) have been operating in Poland for over 40 years, but they are very rarely analysed. This article measures the efficiency of twenty U3As operating within state universities in Poland in the 2017/2018 academic year. A non-radial SBM model, which is a non-parametric DEA method, was used to analyse efficiency. The results show that seven U3As were 100% efficient. Two were in a quantitative (number of students) or a qualitative (number of classes) model, and five in both models simultaneously. However, most universities focused on the number of students rather than the number of classes offered to their students.

Remote teaching became one of the key topics in educational research due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our article looks at the other side of the story, i.e., in-person education during the pandemic. This aspect of teaching excellence has been overlooked because it seemed to be thoroughly studied. However, COVID-19 has profoundly changed in-person teaching. In our study, we focus on the Polish medical and technical universities as the studies they offer include solid practical components (labs or clinical classes). Our article examines how in-person classes were administered and organised during three consecutive semesters, starting in the Spring of 2020, when teaching at Polish HEIs was mostly conducted remotely. We build our analysis on internal legal acts issued by rectors and interviews with university staff who oversaw the teaching process. The legal documents describe the procedures related to in-person teaching or frontline teaching in person. The interviews complement this image by providing the rationale behind the regulations, their reception by the students and the faculty, or the backstage of in-person teaching. The LogFrame was applied to provide a conceptual framework to understand how universities could continue providing their services.

In this article I present the main assumptions and discuss issues of pedagogy as a science and the field of education during a special meeting of the Committee of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan. I focus on the institutional leaders in science teaching who are rectors and deans of Faculties of Education in Poland. Moreover, they are co-authors of relevant teaching and research solutions in science teaching. In the age of growing crisis in the academic community we can, as educators, discuss how no to be to be surprised by pathogenic processes and events, but how to be able to counteract them. Furthermore, how to show representatives of other academic disciplines and structures of learning, how to deal with common to us problems.

In the years 1945-1989 higher education establishment in Wrocław was developing without a proper base for conducting research and teaching activity. The base was generally too small and outdated. In the first post-war years buildings that had belonged to universities and German institutions before the war were used. Being too small compared to several times larger than before the war tasks in the area of education, they could be used only partially. Some universities built new facilities in the 1950s, but their building stock did not increase considerably (3-4 times) and modernize until the 1960s and 1970s. The investments concerned mainly technical university, agriculture university and economic university. In other universities the growth of size was much lower. However, at any university it did not keep up with the growing number of students. From the end of the 1970s because of the growing systemic economic crisis in the country the investments of Wrocław universities reined and in the 1980s they stopped almost completely. The process of enlargement and modernization of university base was diverse both in time and in relation to individual universities. Even during its greatest intensity it was not able to keep up both with tasks allocated as part of central plans and with demographic trends.

In recent decades, the concept of strategic management at universities has attracted more and more attention. There is a significant increase in the awareness of the importance of well-developed development concepts, both among university employees and management staff. Numerous research studies also discuss the need for changes in that presented area. Unfortunately, the analysis of the literature on the subject shows that more attention is paid to the strategy development phase than to its implementation. There are also few studies examining the influence of factors on the strategy implementation at universities. The area of research was related to factors influencing the process of strategy implementation. This article presents the detailed results of the survey of analysis, which covered the opinions of management and employees influencing the strategy implementation at universities in Poland. The main objective of the study was to measure the operational risk of factors influencing the process of strategy at universities and to specify the factors with the highest operational risk level. The study was conducted using the PAPI (Paper and Pencil Interview) technique, based on the research questionnaire. The method of collecting data in an open (explicit) and standardized manner was used there. For this purpose, a standardized research questionnaire was used.

This article addresses the issue of academic entrepreneurship, broadly understood as: (1) the process of establishing companies, (2) university entrepreneurship, (3) development of educational programs and entrepreneurial attitudes among students and academics, (4) creating institutions and programs that support setting up of companies, (5) intellectual property management and (6) entrepreneurial university management (Banerski et al., 2009). The goal is to examine the presence of academic entrepreneurship in the development strategies of eighteen Polish public universities. This study uses the content analysis method and is a part of strategic research. To answer the research question, the universities’ development strategies were analysed and in particular mission statements, strategic and operational goals, activities/tasks. Based on the research, it can be concluded that university authorities do not perceive academic entrepreneurship as a goal of the utmost importance and only to a small extent see the need to develop this concept by taking it into account in development strategies.

The constitutionally guaranteed principle of autonomy of universities, necessary for the implementation of the mission of the system of higher education and science means, among other things, that the authorities of higher education institutions must be left with the sphere of free decision on matters of internal organization. In view of the problems that occur in the life of academic communities, related, among others, to the implementation of the principle of equality and non-discrimination, the need to provide special protection for persons with disabilities, the authors reflect on the need to create ombudsman institutions in universities, indicating the principles on the basis of which such bodies could be created and operate in such a way that it could be reconciled with the principle of autonomy of universities.
Konstytucyjnie zagwarantowana zasada autonomii szkół wyższych, niezbędna dla realizacji misji systemu szkolnictwa wyższego i nauki oznacza m. in., że władzom szkół wyższych musi być pozostawiona sfera swobodnego decydowania o sprawach organizacji wewnętrznej. Wobec problemów, które występują w życiu społeczności akademickich, związanych m. in. z realizacją zasady równości i zakazu dyskryminacji, potrzeby zapewnienia szczególnej ochrony osobom z niepełnosprawnościami, autorzy zastanawiają się nad potrzebą utworzenia instytucji o charakterze ombudsmańskim w szkołach wyższych, wskazując zasady w oparciu o które tego typu organy mogłyby być tworzone i działać tak, by dało się to pogodzić z zasadą autonomii szkół wyższych.

Due to the changes taking place in the socio-economic sphere, including the expectations of members of the society, the idea of social responsibility is increasingly implemented at universities, including public ones. The creation of knowledge-based economy and cooperation in the conditions of globalization and economic integration led to changes in the labour market, which in turn led to changes in the situation of higher education in Poland. Adjusting teaching offer of Polish universities to demands of employers put on their future employees represents an embodiment of educational aspirations of future employees. The aim of this paper is to compare the processes of change which take place in the structure of fields of study at universities with changes visible on the labour market in Poznań and Greater Poland region. The study points the changes that occurred in the structure of specializations chosen by students, and in the structure of a functioning of labour market, and then focuses on the analysis of the intensity, speed and stability of the process of adaptation of these structures in 2008-2014.

Warunkiem rozwoju firm jest ich dobra współpraca z placówką edukacyjną. Z kolei rolą uczelni wyższej jest kształtowanie odpowiedzialnego podejścia biznesu do otoczenia. Celem artykułu jest prześledzenie kierunków i możliwości, jakie ma uczelnia, aby przyczyniać się do tworzenia zrównoważonych metasystemów logistycznych. Podstawowymi kierunkami są: edukowanie w temacie zrównoważonego rozwoju biznesu, prowadzenie i publikowanie badań dotyczących metod zrównoważonego zarządzania logistyką przedsiębiorstw, miast i regionów, współpraca przy tworzeniu nowych rozwiązań, definiowanie zintegrowanej koncepcji CSR i wprowadzanie standardów. Stan wiedzy na temat kształcenia studentów logistyki w duchu społecznej odpowiedzialności nie jest bogaty. Dotąd to duże, globalne przedsiębiorstwa inicjowały wykorzystanie koncepcji CSR w oparciu o szereg standardów i norm. Wdrażanie działań CSR w małych przedsiębiorstwach, rozwijanych przez absolwentów polskich uczelni, będzie wynikiem ich wykształcenia. Celem badawczym artykułu była analiza programów kształcenia i efektów kształcenia zawartych w Krajowych Ramach Kwalifikacyjnych, według których ocenia się wiedzę, umiejętności i kompetencje studentów kształconych w polskich uczelniach na kierunku Logistyka (specjalistów w dziedzinie nauk o zarządzaniu, kończących I stopień edukacji). W wyniku tych badań pojawił się postulat o to, aby nauczając logistyków społecznej odpowiedzialności eksponować CSR w programach kształcenia i przygotować kolejne efekty kształcenia do egzekwowania wiedzy i umiejętności z tego obszaru.

The purpose of this article is to trace the trends and opportunities that the university has in terms to contribute to sustainable logistics meta-systems. The main directions are: to educate about the sustainable business development, to maintain and publicise of researches regarding the sustainable management practices of logistics companies, cities and regions; to cooperate during the creation of new solutions, to define an integrated approach and implementation of CSR standards. The experience in developing logistics students' social responsibility regarding CSR is not rich as so far large global enterprises were initiated implementation of CSR based on various standards and norms. The implementation of CSR in small businesses TSL, which is developing by graduated from/of Polish universities reflect on their education. The aim of this article is to research and analyse educational university programs and their effectiveness based on National Qualification Norms; which are framework to knowledge, skills and competency of graduates from Polish Higher Education. This research focused on Logistics graduated specialised in management on Bachelors level. The research highlighted the importance of corporate social responsibility of business in teaching logistics students, as part of their educational process, as well as developing knowledge and skills of managers to be and existing managers of clustering logistics companies about the type of corporate social responsibility of business and enforce this knowledge and skills.

This paper reviews international rankings of scientific achievements and the standings that Polish science and academic institutions occupy. A survey of bibliometric methods and measures (publications, citations, patents, indices etc.) is presented. Next, the results of several recent rankings are given. Polish science taken as a whole ranks 20 in the world (8 in the European Union) according to the number of publications in the Thomson/Reuters data base. The exact sciences, especially physics, rank better. The criteria used to classify universities are more questionable and subject to criticism from the experts. Polish universities are classified far beyond the leading world institutions, but some departments compete successfully with their European and world counterparts.

Cooperation between the world of science (universities, scientists) and the socio-economic environment of the universities has been a subject of many developments and analyses for some time now. As for now, there has been no universal set of tools aimed at measuring effectiveness of science-business relationships (S-B). This paper presents selected expertise results conducted on the behalf of the Foundation for the Development of the Education System (FRSE). It allowed to assess the usefulness of the most popular measures of the science-business relationship. We have identified indicators, which were evaluated in a qualitative study based on a sample of 30 representatives of two universities.

The essay is a voice in the discussion about the activities of public universities in the context of the new Law on Higher Education and Science of 20 July 2018. Due to the unique character of this institution, the author thinks that the answer is not simple. However, the most important thing is that universities should retain priority in realizing the public goals for which they were established.
Esej jest głosem w dyskusji na temat funkcjonowania uczelni publicznych w kontekście nowej ustawy Prawo o szkolnictwie wyższym i nauce, z dnia 20 lipca 2018 roku. Nowe prawo skłania do postawienia wielu pytań, w tym w jakim kierunku będą się rozwijały. Z uwagi na wyjątkowy charakter tej instytucji odpowiedź nie jest prosta. Najważniejsze jest, aby uczelnie publiczne zachowały priorytet w realizacji zadań edukacyjnych, do których zostały powołane.
