    Wittgenstein the saviour? The problem of rules in Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practiceThe text constitutes a thorough and exhaustive analysis of the impact of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophy on Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of practice and especially on his notions of practical sense and logic of practice. The author first considers both philosophers’ attitude to objectivism. Then she proposes a reading of Wittgenstein’s theory that might prove useful and inspiring in the sociological field. In the final section, the author analyses the other, partly oppositional in relation to Bourdieu’s, theories of practice, proposed by Anthony Giddens and Michel de Certeau, putting them in the light of Wittgenstein’s analyses. Wybawca Wittgenstein? Problem reguł w teorii praktyki Pierre’a BourdieuTekst stanowi dociekliwą i wyczerpującą analizę wpływu filozofii Ludwiga Wittgensteina na teorię praktyki Pierre’a Bourdieu, a zwłaszcza na wypracowane przez Bourdieu pojęcia zmysłu praktycznego i logiki praktycznej. Autorka rozważa stosunek do obiektywizmu obu filozofów. Następnie proponuje takie odczytanie teorii Wittgensteina, które mogłoby okazać się pożyteczne i inspirujące w polu socjologicznym. W ostatniej części artykułu autorka analizuje inne, po części opozycyjne wobec teorii Pierre’a Bourdieu teorie praktyki, zaproponowane przez Anthony’ego Giddensa i Michela de Certeau i stawia je w świetle analiz Wittgensteina.

    The article analyses how crucial the Irish origin and long-term busking experience were in shaping the artistic habitus of Glen Hansard. Using Pierre Bourdieu’s terminology and Benedict Anderson’s characteristic of “imagined communities”, the author presents the variety of ways in which Hansard’s “habitus of the Irish busker” reveals itself. Seen from the perspective of the sociology of art, the artist’s statements, lyrics, music videos, projects and social initiatives reflect the point of view of a niche artist, strongly dissociating himself from the “entertainment” sector. They also show how grounded Hansard’s position in the artistic field was before his unexpected 2007 Oscar win for Best Original Song.

    Social construction of the body and the performative magic: Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory in performance studiesPerformance studies are a developing field of social science which draws on the insights of sociology, ethnography, cultural studies, cultural anthropology, theatre studies and communication studies. The object of performance studies is human activity seen as expression which constitutes the process of production and reproduction of subjectivity. In this text the author analyses Pierre Bourdieu’s sociological theory from the perspective of performance studies: of questions about social agency, understood as constructing the subject within a specific field of power. The author focuses particularly on the following aspects of individual and collective practices as described by Pierre Bourdieu: spatial practices, bodily practices, and masculine domination. Społecznie konstruowane ciała i performatywna magia: Teoria socjologiczna Pierre’a Bourdieu w badaniach performatywnychPerformatyka jest rozwijającą się dziedziną badań społecznych, która korzysta z dorobku socjologii, etnografii, studiów kulturowych, antropologii kulturowej, teatrologii, studiów nad komunikowaniem. Przedmiotem badań performatywnych jest aktywność ludzka rozumiana jako ekspresja, która stanowi proces wytwarzania i reprodukowania podmiotowości. W niniejszym tekście autorka analizuje teorię socjologiczną Pierre’a Bourdieu w perspektywie performatyki: pytań o społeczną sprawczość rozumianą jako konstruowanie podmiotu w określonym polu władzy. Szczególnemu namysłowi autorka poddaje następujące aspekty indywidualnych i zbiorowych praktyk opisane przez Pierre’a Bourdieu: praktyki przestrzenne, praktyki cielesne, męska dominacja.

    The article is an attempt to capture the chivalric culture on the basis of various activities of the nobility, as reconstructed by an analysis of written records as well as artefacts discovered mainly in Silesian castles during archaeological research. In order to objectify the results of this research, the concept of habitus proposed by sociologist of culture Pierre Bourdieu and his continuators was used. This approach redirects focus to the question of a range of capitals – economic, social, cultural, and others – which were at the disposal of the lord of the castle, discernible on the basis of the analysis of archaeological materials and written records. The possibility of converting them into symbolic capital is identified here with the culture of chivalry.

    Jeden z fundamentalnych sporów na temat natury rzeczywistości spo- łecznej stanowi debata, którą najczęściej określa się współcześnie mianem agency and structure (sprawstwo podmiotowe a struktura). Pierre Bourdieu próbował prze- zwyciężyć tę klasyczną opozycję („konstruktywistyczny strukturalizm”) i w efekcie stworzył bardzo ciekawą i oryginalną teorię pola społecznego. Jego koncepcja stała się dla mnie inspiracją do myślenia o praktyce poradniczej właśnie w kategoriach pola. W artykule przywołuję argumenty i racje na rzecz aplikacji oraz uprawomoc- nienia teorii tego wybitnego socjologa na gruncie poradoznawstwa. Z racji objętości tekstu czynię to tutaj jedynie w sposób uproszczony. Jest to zaledwie wstępna próba przedstawienia praktyki poradniczej jako fenomenu działania pola.
    One of the fundamental disagreements about the nature of social reality is a debate which is commonly referred to nowadays as agency and structure. Pierre Bourdieu attempted to overcome this classical opposition (“constructivist structu- ralism”) and as a result has created a very interesting and original theory of the social field. His concept became an inspiration for me to think about the counselling practice just in terms of the field. In the article I rehearse the eminent sociologist’s major concepts and provide arguments for applicability of his theory as a legitimate framework for counsellogy. Given the limits of my paper, this account is here so- mewhat simplified. It is just a preliminary attempt to present the counselling practice as the phenomenon of field operation

    W artykule rozpatruje się ukraińską elitę polityczną w świetle teorii praktyk, habitus, pola i kapitału, opracowanej przez francuskiego socjologa Pierre’a Bourdieu. W centrum uwagi znajdują się praktyki społeczne elit politycznych, które kształtują się pod wpływem wielu czynników, w tym instytucjonalne reguły, warunki gry, format walki politycznej, sposoby konkurencji, wartość różnych kapitałów w ukraińskim polu politycznym na różnych etapach rozwoju procesu politycznego w kraju. Oprócz tego, analizie poddano rzeczy mniej oczywiste i rzadko przyciągające uwagę badawczą, takie jak logika pola politycznego, habitus elit politycznych jako produkt poprzednich doświadczeń. Zwłaszcza, habitus ma tendencję do generowania dotychczasowych praktyk i jest odpornym na zmiany. Doświadczenia i realia świata społecznego, szczególnie w politycznych oraz biznesowych środowiskach wraz z praktykami, nasadzonymi przez poprzedni reżim, tworzą u aktorów politycznych specjalny tryb myślenia oraz percepcji (zarówno świadome jak i nieświadome) w odniesieniu do polityki i biznesu. Inaczej mówiąc, chodzi o obserwowane działania, zakorzenione w kulturze, które wytwarzają półautomatyczne, nie do końca uświadomione motywy i style zachowania. Zrozumienie tych mechanizmów i badania ich wpływu na praktyki społeczne elit politycznych prowadzi do głębszego zrozumienia procesu politycznego na Ukrainie.
    The article analyzes political elites in Ukraine with regard to the theory of practices, habitus, field and capitals, developed by a French thinker Pierre Bourdieu. The author focuses on the social practices of political elites under the influence of such factors as institutional conditions, rules of the game, the scope of political struggles, the level and ways of maintaining competition, the value of different kinds of capitals in the field of Ukrainian politics at the different stages of the development of political process in the country. In addition, the article analyzes and takes into consideration such less evident and rarely noticeable issues as the logic of the Ukrainian field of politics, and habitus of political elites, which is the product of the social experiences of the past and is continuously generating previous practices and resistance to changes. Experience and realities the political actors face, particularly in the political and business environments, along with the practices generated by the previous regime, have planted certain settings and perceptions (both conscious and unconscious) concerning business and politics. One should not underestimate the influence of such settings, as they are constantly imposing impact on the practices. The understanding of the mechanisms and discovering the influence they have on social practices of political elites, leads to the deeper understanding of the peculiarities of political process in Ukraine in general.

    Artykuł dotyczy komedii Molière’a Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (Mieszczanin szlachcicem) z 1670 roku i wybranych aspektów jej dramatoznawczej i artystycznej recepcji. Tok wywodu organizują dwa zagadnienia: możliwości interpretacji społecznych sensów utworu i wyzwania poetyki comédie-ballet dla tłumaczy i inscenizatorów. Autor przedstawia stan badań nad tematyzowanym w Mieszczaninie obrazem niemożliwego awansu klasowego i wskazuje nowy kierunek interpretacji tego problemu, odwołując się do kategorii zaczerpniętych z socjologicznej teorii Pierre’a Bourdieu. Omawia także sposoby podejścia do charakterystycznych dla tej sztuki strukturalnych elementów komediobaletu w jej adaptacjach, tłumaczeniach i inscenizacjach (teatr stanisławowski, Jerzy Gruza, Jerzy Stuhr, Benjamin Lazar). Stawia tezę, że oba wątki ujęte w perspektywie transhistorycznej ilustrują to samo zjawisko: w dotychczasowej pracy interpretacyjnej i praktykach scenicznych narosłych wokół Mieszczanina szlachcicem aktualność odkrywana jest nie poprzez uwspółcześnienia czy wydobywanie nowych sensów, ale dzięki refleksji nad historycznymi uwarunkowaniami kultury czasów Molière’a.
    This article concerns Molière’s 1670 comedy Le Bourgeois gentilhomme (The Bourgeois Gentleman) and selected aspects of its scholarly and artistic reception. The argument is organised around two problems: the possibility of interpreting the social meanings of the work and the challenges that comédie-ballet poetics poses to translators and theater-makers. The author presents an overview of research on the image of impossible class advancement as thematized in The Bourgeois Gentleman and indicates a new interpretive direction, referring to categories drawn from the sociological theory of Pierre Bourdieu. He also discusses how the structural elements of comédie-ballet characteristic of Molière’s play have been approached in its Polish adaptations, translations, and stagings (18th-century court theater, Jerzy Gruza, Jerzy Stuhr, Benjamin Lazar). He argues that taken from a transhistorical perspective, both the interpretative work and stage practices concerning The Bourgeois Gentleman illustrate the same phenomenon: the play’s relevance is discovered not through modernization or revealing new meanings, but rather thanks to a reflection on the historical conditions of culture in Molière’s time.
