The fusion behaviour of biomass ash-forming materials is an important factor in assessing the propensity to form undesirable slag and fouling deposits in the boiler. The characteristics of the fuel used affect the extent and severity of the problem, thus growing efforts are put on finding reliable methods for its characterization. Combustion and co-combustion of biomass have gained popularity in combating climate change and reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. Nevertheless, biomass encompasses a wide range of different types and its use increases operational risks due to the diversity of the chemical composition. This study is based on characterising the mineral phase transformations of two kinds of biomass (wood pellets and cereal pellets) using various laboratory-based methods on fuel ashes. Measurements of changes in the electrical properties of the ash during the sintering process (dielectric loss factor) were performed using a QuadTech Plus 7600 bridge in the frequency range 500Hz - 1MHz. Thermodynamic analyses were performed by means of FactSage™ modelling. The results were compared with those of standard tests, AFT and oxide index calculations, which were employed to predict slagging and fouling propensities. The observed changes in dielectric loss depend on the frequency and temperature of sintering. FactSageTM thermodynamic equilibrium calculations proved very useful in predicting the ash melting behaviour and the chemical changes occurring in the ash. The existence of a melt phase, occurring at even lower temperatures of those given by the AFT, is in accordance with the high slagging and fouling hazards predicted by empirical indices.

Manufacturing units, which use biomass for combustion and co-firing, are obliged to gradually increase the amount of biomass from agricultural sources in place of timber biomass from forests. Many different species of trees that grow on arable land, bushes, grasses or perennials can be used for energy purposes. A huge variety of plants that give biomass useful in the power industry, is connected with a large diversity of physical characteristics (hardness, specific gravity, moisture content, porosity) and chemical composition. It significantly affects not only the calorific value of biomass but also the condition of the boilers in which it is burnt. This paper presents the results of the research concerning the influence of the process of combustion biomass from seven plant species on the boilers fouling on the basis of ash chemical composition. The indicators used for the analysis were as follows: boilers slagging, the tendency of fuel to form impurities, sintering and agglomeration. A significant variation in the content of alkalies was shown that cause the formation of sediment on the boilers heating surfaces. The smallest risk of heating boilers fouling is associated with perennial grasses incineration, especially the ones from the Miscanthus species that contain significant quantities of silicon monoxide, which is responsible for the heating surfaces erosion. The usage of polycarpic plants, such as Virginia mallow or Jerusalem artichoke, may cause pollution deposition and reduce the efficiency of boilers to the greatest degree. Because the biomass of different plant species exhibits the diversity of energy parameters and tendencies to foul boilers, there is a need to select the material to the combustion carefully. Moreover, blends of biomass raw materials (or biomass with coal) should be composed so that they are adapted to the boiler parameters and to the conditions of the combustion process.

The application of microgranular adsorptive filtration (μGAF) has been successfully used in conjunction with membrane filtration. It proves to be efficient not only in removal of natural organic matter (NOM) but also it significantly reduces the extent of fouling. There are a few mathematical models evaluated to understand the underlying mechanism of fouling. This paper describes a method of predicting filtration capacities using constant flow datasets collected when μGAF was applied. The results suggest that the behaviour of fouling in microgranular adsorptive filtration system varies between different filtration operations and natural water quality. In analysed case the mechanism of pores blocking can be described by the complete blocking mechanism.
Mikro-ziarnowa adsorpcyjna filtracja (μGAF) jest z powodzeniem stosowana w połączeniu z filtracją membranową. Metoda ta jest skuteczna nie tylko w usuwaniu naturalnych substancji organicznych (NOM), ale również znacznie zmniejsza stopień zatkania się podczas filtracji porów membrany (proces foulingu). Aby zrozumieć zjawisko foulingu, opracowano kilka modeli matematycznych. W niniejszej pracy opisano mechanizm blokowania porów podczas μGAF filtracji. Uzyskane wyniki dają podstawy do przypuszczeń, że w zależności od zastosowanego systemu oraz właściwości chemicznych i fizycznych filtrowanej wody różne modele matematyczne mogą mieć zastosowanie. W analizowanym przypadku mechanizm blokowania porów najlepiej opisuje model całkowitego zatykania porów.

In this paper a problem is discussed of thermal degradation of shell-and-tube recuperative feed-water heaters due to heat transfer surface fouling. Application (to an example steam cycle of power plant) of DIAGAR software system intended for the analysing of impact of degradation of a particular heat exchanger on whole recuperative system performance, is presented. On the basis of the systematically performed simulative calculations it was concluded that the degradation of feed-water heaters of the lowest extraction pressure results in an additional load imposed on the heaters of higher extraction pressures, moreover it was estimated that the degradation of the heaters due to presence of sediments of the thermal resistance reaching 5*10-4 m2*K/W, has resulted in the drop of turbine set efficiency by about 0.3%. Such drop depends on a given configuration of degree of degradation of particular feed-water heaters applied in a considered turbine set.

A biotechnological synthesis generated a fermentation broth containing the dissociated forms of organic compounds and residual mineral salts. An effective method of selective removal of the ionic species and organic compounds from solutions comprises nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. Ultrafiltration (UF) was used in this work as a pre-treatment method for the preparation of feed for these processes. The UF study was carried out with a real broth, which was obtained using Citrobacter freundii bacteria for the fermentation of glycerol solutions, resulting in the UF permeate with turbidity below 0.1 NTU. However, a significant decline of the permeate flux was observed during the UF process. The influence of the transmembrane pressure on the fouling intensity of used ceramic membranes was investigated. A periodical membrane cleaning was carried out by rinsing with water and a 1 wt % solution of sodium hydroxide. The applied cleaning procedures permitted to restore the initial permeate flux.

Celem niniejszej pracy było zastosowanie procesu nanofiltracji do usuwania mikrozanieczyszczeń z rzeczywistych ścieków komunalnych oczyszczonych metodą osadu czynnego. Zastosowane membrany różniły się graniczną masą molową i polimerem, z jakiego je wytworzono. Filtrację membranową realizowano w ciśnieniowym urządzeniu przystosowanym do prowadzenia procesu w układzie filtracji jednokierunkowej (dead-end), na membranie o powierzchni czynnej 144 cm2. W zależności od parametrów operacyjnych procesu (ciśnienie transmembranowe) i rodzaju polimeru membranotwórczego współczynniki retencji badanych związków kształtowały się w zakresie wartości 10-90%. W badaniach analizowano również wpływ zjawiska foulingu membran na zmianę ich właściwości powierzchniowych i charakteru kwasowo-zasadowego.
The aim of this study was to the remove micropollutants with biological estrogenic activity from real effluent. Four types of nanofiltration membranes were used, differ in molecular weight cut-off and polymer material. The nanofiltration process was carried out in pressure installation enabling conduction of the process in the dead-end mode on membrane area of 144 cm2. In dependence of operational parameters of the process (the transmembrane pressure), and type of membrane, retention coefficients of the tested compounds were in the range 10-90%. The study also determined the impact of the fouling phenomenon of membranes on change their surface characteristics.

In this work a fouling study of polypropylene membranes used for microfiltration of glycerol solutions fermented by Citrobacter freundii bacteria was presented. The permeate free of C. freundii bacteria and having a turbidity in the range of 0.72–1.46 NTU was obtained. However, the initial permeate flux (100–110 L/m2h at 30 kPa of transmembrane pressure) was decreased 3–5 fold during 2–3 h of process duration. The performed scanning electron microscope observations confirmed that the filtered bacteria and suspensions present in the broth formed a cake layer on the membrane surface. A method of periodical module rinsing was used for restriction of the fouling influence on a flux decline. Rinsing with water removed most of the bacteria from the membrane surface, but did not permit to restore the initial permeate flux. It was confirmed that the irreversible fouling was dominated during broth filtration. The formed deposit was removed using a 1 wt% solution of sodium hydroxide as a rinsing solution.

Ultrafiltration (UF) is one of the membrane processes which is mostly used in the dairy industry for the separation and concentration of whey components or fermentation broth. Fouling of UF membranes in the food industry is primarily due to a deposition of microorganisms, proteins, fats and minerals on the membrane surface. Thus, cleaning of the membranes is an essential step of UF separation. The results from investigations of chemical cleaning of a ceramic UF membrane fouled by precipitation of whey components and yeast contained in the fermentation broth are presented. The effect of cleaning procedure on the degree of permeability restoration by the fouled membrane was studied. The results demonstrated that a combination of sodium hydroxide, phosphoric acid and sodium hypochlorite as a disinfectant could be successfully used to achieve an optimum recovery of the membrane properties.

Membrane techniques are an alternative water treatment method for classical processes. However, mostly their capacity and membrane lifetime are limited by the phenomenon called fouling, ie the accumulation of organic and/or inorganic substances on the surface and into the pores of the membrane. The results of the study presenting the dependence of water properties such as pH, kind of organic matters and ionic strength on membrane fouling are discussed in this article. Unified Modified Fouling Index (UMFI) was used to describe intensity of fouling. Also the influence of water properties on fouling mechanism are shown.
Alternatywną metodą oczyszczania i uzdatniania wody w stosunku do metod klasycznych są procesy membranowe, którym towarzyszy nieodłącznie zjawisko foulingu, związane z obniżeniem wydajności i z akumulacją substancji organicznej bądź nieorganicznej na powierzchni membrany. W artykule omówiono wyniki badań wpływu właściwości wód (pH, rodzaj substancji organicznej, siła jonowa) na intensywność foulingu, wyrażoną za pomocą jednostkowego indeksu foulingu UMFI (Unified Membrane Fouling Index) i na mechanizm zjawiska.

Ceramic membranes are among one of the most promising candidates for membrane applications, owing to their excellent resistance to mechanical, chemical, and thermal stresses. These advantages make them an attractive filter material. An additional benefit which is extremely important for the industry, is their possibility of continuous operation at high efficiency while maintaining constant transmembrane pressure. Due to the inorganic material from which they are made, ceramic membranes have the possibility of being cleaned by steam sterilization and are resistant to micro-organisms. Although, due to low production costs, ceramic membranes are one of the most cost-effective membrane filtration technologies they are prone to substantial fouling. When used, a layer of contaminants is formed on the active surface, often reducing or completely filling the membrane pores resulting in fouling and concentration polarization. These phenomena cause a decreased efficiency of the process, which leads to the need for the membrane to be replaced with a new one. However, ceramic membranes have the possibility of being regenerated through a series of activities and the use of various chemical agents. The use of regenerated membranes would provide the opportunity to reduce exploitation costs. Although membrane regeneration does not guarantee a return to the initial parameters, it does allow for the recovery of high permeation flow. The aim of the research was to compare operating parameters of the ceramic membranes after multiple use and longtime storage with different condition of storage.

W pracy przedstawiono systematyczną i zintegrowaną metodologię modyfikacji przemysłowych sieci wodnych w celu minimalizacji zużycia wody i zrzutu ścieków. Opracowano procedurę algorytmiczną, którą zastosowano do analizy wybranej części sieci wodnej cukrowni z pojedynczym zanieczyszczeniem. Opracowana procedura składa się z algorytmu alokacji strumieni i prostego systemu eksperckiego wyboru metody oczyszczania. Uzyskano rozwiązania, w których w wyniku alokacji strumieni oraz zastosowaniu mikrofiltracji jako dodatkowego procesu oczyszczania, zredukowano zużycie wody, odpowiednio o 79% i 100%, w porównaniu z siecią przed modyfikacją.
A systematic and integrated approach in modification of water networks in process industries is presented in the paper. An algorithmic procedure was developed and tested for a selected part of sugar plant water network with single contaminant. The developed procedure consisted of water stream allocation algorithm and a simple expert system for the selection of wastewater treatment method. The use of water streams allocation and incorporation of microfiltration as the additional treatment process enabled the fresh water intake reduction of 79% and 100% respectively, comparing to the system before modification.

Propeller performance is typically considered under clean conditions, despite the fact that fouling is an inevitable phenomenon for propellers. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effects of roughness due to fouling on the performance of a propeller using a CFD simulation in conjunction with the roughness function model. A simulation of a clean propeller is verified for a five-blade propeller model using existing experimental results. A roughness function model is then suggested based on existing measured roughness data. The simulations are extended for the same propeller under varying severities of roughness. Initially, it is concluded that KT and ηo gradually decrease with increasing fouling roughness, while KQ increases, compared to smooth propeller. For instance, at J=1.2 for medium calcareous fouling, KT is reduced by about 26%, KQ increases by about 7.0%, and ηo decreases by 30.9%. In addition, for the rough propeller, the extra power required is defined as the specific sea margin (SSM) to compensate for the power loss. A slight roughness causes a large decrease in ηo. A propeller painted with foul-release paint and an unpainted propeller are found to require 2.7% SSM and 57.8% SSM over four years of service, respectively. Finally, the use of foul-release paints for propeller painting is strongly advised.

The fouling presence on the heat transfer surfaces, both on the waterside and the steam side of the steam power plants heat recovery exchangers usually leads to the loss of their heat transfer capacities. This loss appears owing to the high value of heat resistance of fouling. Furthermore, these deposits are most often formed with irregularities in the surface layers. These textures are usually characterized by a varied, often stochastic and difficult to define, geometric structures. The most common measure of their inequalities is the roughness parameter describing the surface geometry. The fouling surface layer texture can, on one hand, cause enhancement of the heat transfer process, but on the other hand, it may contribute to an additional increase in thermal degradation of the heat exchanger. Many experimental studies have shown that the greater the unevenness of the heat transfer surface on the waterside of a given heat transfer device, the smaller increase in the thermal resistance of the impurities over time, thereby increasing the amount of heat transferred. It should be emphasized, however, that the rise in roughness results in an increase in the heat transfer coefficient, while simultaneously intensifying the flow resistance of the working medium. Taking into account the heat transfer surface by steam side, the increase in the roughness promotes the formation of a thicker condensate layer, thus impairing the condensate drainage organization. It can be explained by the fact that deposits settle in a sort of quasi-rib effect, although with undefined ribbed grid, it may lead to the overflow of inter-finned passages. The article shows the previously mentioned phenomena and also presents the descriptive quantities for the fouling surface layer texture, based on the results of the author’s own experimental research.

Opis:
In this work the studies were performed on the intensity of fouling of the membrane NF90 and NF270 depending on the value of dynamic contact angle, previously determined for these membrane. The NF membranes were used for the separation of broth obtained during the fermentation of glycerol by Lactobacilluscasei bacteria. The measurements of dynamic contact angle were carried out using the Wilhelmy plate method. Taped membranes samples (support layer to support layer), wetted for 2 days in deionized water prior to testing, were used to study the contact angle of top layer and its organic fouling. Using deionized water; the contact angle values equal to 27-30o and 53-57o for NF270 and NF90, respectively, were obtained. As a consequence of adsorption of organic compound on the membrane surfaces, the contact angle obtained for both fouled membranes was about 55-56o, and this value was closer to the contact angle of non-fouled NF90 membrane. Therefore, the NF90 membrane was more resistant to organic fouling during the separation of broth.
