Opis:
Thick-walled cylinders are widely used in various engineering applications. In an optimal design of pressurized thick-walled cylinders, an increase in the allowable internal pressure can be achieved by an autofrettage process. In the paper, analysis is carried out to develop a procedure in which the autofrettage pressure is determined analytically. The obtained equivalent stress distribution is compared with those of the conventional solid wall and of several multi-layer vessels. The results of the analytical approach are verified by FEM modelling. Tensile tests have been carried out to determine the real mechanical properties of the material of the vessel and to create a material model. The presented example illustrates the advantages of the autofrettage technique.

In the paper, the static sensitivity of complex structures with respect to random design parameters is presented. Using the adjoint system method, based on the mean-point second-order perturbation method, the first two probabilistic moments of time-independent sensitivity are formulated with means and cross-covariances of random design parameters as the input data. It enables one to obtain the second-order accuracy of the solution. The presented formulations are illustrated by a number of numerical examples. The influence of finite element mesh density for the obtained results is discussed using the analysis of the spatial bar dome.

This paper investigates the static behavior of bolted joints and the extent of its control in the design of assembled structures. An analysis method is thus first developed highlighting stresses distribution in the junction to dimension the functional performance area. A description of the joint characteristics is presented. Numerical simulations, comparing the complete and simplified finite element models relevance, are then carried out. The integration of results of this analysis in the design of multiple bolted joints structures in finally presented. Experiments on a testbed, where a viscoelastic material is introduced in joints interfaces to enhance global damping, validate the approach developed.

Opis:
Riveted joints are a common location of fatigue cracks in aircraft metal structures. Fatigue life of such joints as well as a place of cracks nucleation is strongly influence by a stress distribution in sheets, which is a result of residual stresses (mainly after riveting) and stresses induced by external loads. Stress distribution in two-row lap joint was investigated with the use of Finite Element Method. The joint consist of two 1.5 mm sheets and two protruding rivets with diameter equal to 4 mm, made of 2024 T3 (sheets) and 2117 T4 (rivets) aluminium alloys. The simulations covered a riveting process and tensile stages. The 3D models of joint with the universal rivets and with the brazier, rivets with a compensator were prepared. Elastoplastic material properties as well as geometric nonlinearity and contact phenomena were included. The results of simulations show that the residual stress distribution after release of tensile loading varies significantly from the distribution after riveting only. This fact should therefore be taken into account in a fatigue life estimation of such joints performed based on a FE calculation. The paper presents also the influence of the analysed rivet geometry on the stress distribution at the sheets faying surfaces.

Effective machine tool design needs to take into account various kinematic configurations and possible combinations of structural parts, which meet the requirements of both the structural properties on one hand and technology and cost limitation on the other hand. Prior to a detailed developing a certain machine tool structure, an expert based decision on the machine tool conception needs to be performed. A high number of design variants should be explored in a short time. Fulfilling those demands leads to developing a machine tool modular models, enabling easy changing the kinematic configuration or various structural parts. In the paper the techniques for effective component coupling and model order reduction using mode truncation or Krylov subspace based technique for creating the machine tool coupled models are introduced. Case studies considering real machine tool structures are given. High quality of Krylov subspace reduction technique in connection with multipoint constraint surface coupling is shown both in terms of dynamic properties of the reduced multibody model and a very low time demands at the same time.

A numerical computation-based analysis of the free vibration analysis of uniform beams with rectangular cross-sections is presented in this work using finite element analysis. The approach involves dividing the beam into segments at the crack section, which is then modelled for simulation for eigenfrequencies on the ABAQUS platform. The numerical simulation results are in excellent agreement with the findings of previous research, confirming the efficacy and applicability of the developed beam model. A sequential comprehensive approach towards analysis of the effects of the position and depth of the cracks on the natural frequencies are addressed in numerical results. The research findings confirm that the simulation model is suitable for the vibration analysis of beams or beam-like elements with different cross-sections.

The spherical bearing is widely used in highways, bridges and long-span structures. In order to study mechanical properties of a large-scale spherical bearing, a full-scale finite element model of the spherical bearing was established by using ABAQUS software, and the mechanical properties of the spherical bearing under four working conditions were simulated respectively when the upper bearing plate had different inclination angles. The ultimate bearing capacity of the spherical bearing under vertical tension was analyzed emphatically. The research results show that, in practical applications, the change in bearing capacity caused by the inclination angle of the upper bearing plate should be considered, and the wedge-shaped part should be strengthened.

The paper presents an attempt to investigate the influence of damping effects on the sensitivity response of structures from the point of view of dynamics. This means that one should answer not only the well-known question how dampers reduce vibration amplitudes, but also, and first of all, the question how the damping effects affect the structural sensitivity. Namely, whether a damped system is less sensitive to variations of design variables, such as cross sections, thickness or Young module of structural members. After the introduction, in the second section a variational formulation for structure dynamics is presented in the context of the finite element method. In the next section the time instant dynamic sensitivity is described. The system of ordinary differential equations obtained is numerically integrated by the mode superposition algorithm. In the fourth section a large scale complex truss-beam-shell system of 12822 degrees of freedom, Fig. 1, excited by a Heaviside impact is implemented and discussed in two options, damped and undamped. A number of graphs related to dynamic displacements, internal forces and sensitivity for elements is shown, Figs. 2 - 6. The concluding remarks are given with some suggestion to reduce sensitivity of some of types structures by using dampers.

Opis:
A formulation for eliminating beat effects by using additional lumped masses or/and changing damping coefficients is presented in the paper. The Rayleigh's model of viscous damping, being a linear combination of the system mass and stiffness parameters, is adopted in the equations of motion. As an example, a truss dome system, treated as a lattice shell, is considered. Input data of geometrical and material properties, as well as of an assumed impulse excitation, are given. Numerical results are verified alternatively by the mode superposition method and direct step-by-step integration one. Analytical and computational aspects of the problem at hand are discussed and compared through obtained illustrative results. It is turned out that, for such a class of structures, the application of lumped masses should be much more efficient rather than the change of damping properties.

Opis:
In this work, a finite element study is proposed by using the Comsol Multiphysics software to evaluate the effects of microcrack shape, size and direction on the poroelastic behaviors of a single osteon. Methods: This finite element model is established by using the Comsol Multiphysics software, and we just focus on the comparison of the influences of those microcrack geometric parameters on the osteonal fluid pressure and velocity. Results: The results show that: (1) microcracks in the osteon wall can induce a release of the fluid pressure, but enlarge the velocity in this region; (2) equal-area microcrack with ellipsoid-like shape produced a larger fluid pressure and velocity fields in the osteon than that of rectangular shape; (3) in the elliptic microcracks, the longer of the length (major semi-axis) induces a smaller fluid pressure and velocity amplitudes, whereas the width (minor axis) has little effect; (4) the direction of the microcracks (major axial direction) has an limited influence area around about 1/15 of the osteon cross-sectional area. Conclusions: This model permits the linking of the external loads and microcracks to the osteonal fluid pressure and velocity, which can be used for other purpose associate microcracks with the mechanotransduction and bone remodeling.

In order to solve the support problem of a fully mechanized coal face under rock burst and with the goal of safe and efficient coal mining, the present study hasenvisaged a hexagon periodic arrangement energy absorption structure. Based on the shell theory, the mechanical model of the impact resistant structure and hydraulic support was constructed using the finite element method. The mechanical properties of the hydraulic support under a full impact and a partial load impact of the roof were analysed, and the impact resistant structure was designed to prove the reliability of the structure. The results showed that the anti-impact structure reduced the stress and stress fluctuation of the column and effectively reduced the shape variable of the weak link of the hydraulic support. Furthermore, a delay in the time was observed, when the pressure of the hydraulic cylinder reached the yield strength, and there was a gain in the time for the opening of the large flow safety valve. Especially, under the action of partial load, the column did not bend, and the hydraulic cylinder was in the elastic range. Our results can provide new insights in the support of rock burst working face, which is of great significance concerning safety in the coal mining.

Thermo-chemical treatments are known to increase the fatigue life of industrial parts. Due to the imprecise consideration of residual stresses in predicting the durability of components subjected to cyclic loading and their effect on the fatigue life, the authors developed a numerical model combining the influence of residual stresses with stresses caused by bending. The authors performed the numerical simulation with the use of Finite Element Method to analyse material behaviour during cyclic loading. The residual stress state developed during nitriding was introduced onto cross-section of the numerical specimen. The goal of this work was better understanding of the real conditions of the nitride steel fatigue processes and improving the knowledge about numerical predicting of the fatigue life for parts with residual stresses. The results of simulation were compared with plane bending fatigue tests. The presented method indicates the possibility of increasing the accuracy of the fatigue analysis of elements after surface treatment, increasing its certainty and the ability to perform better optimization of service life.

The problem of dynamic sensitivity of damped systems in the finite element context is presented in the paper. MDOF systems with Rayleigh's damping effects are considered, modal damping factors being obtained by the superposition method. Material and geometrical input data for an exemplary system of suspended cable-stayed bridges, modelled basing upon a real object are introduced. An excitation of the Heaviside form, acting on the pylon top and parallel to the bridge longitudinal axis, is assumed. The dynamic sensitivity response of displacements with respect to cross-sectional areas of structural members is discussed. Technological and computational aspects of the complex cable-beam-shell system are analysed and illustrated in detail by numerical results. It is shown that for this kind of structures subjected to dynamic loads the most sensitive elements are main cables.

The objective of this work is to show the influence of dynamic characteristics of Active Magnetic Bearings (AMBs) on the stability and dynamic response of an asymmetric and unbalanced rotor. Indeed, AMBs have been successfully applied in several industrial machinery facilities. Their main advantages are the contactless working principle, frictionless suspension and operation in very high speeds. Firstly, the AMBs dynamic support parameters have been obtained through electromagnetic theory. Then, a generalized system equations of motion have been derived using the finite element method. The motion of a rotor the shaft cross-section of which is asymmetric is generally governed by ordinary differential equations with periodic coefficients. Floquet’s theory is used to investigate the stability of this system of equations. Finally, numerical simulation results are presented and discussed.

Opis:
This paper presents an application of the grid convergence index (GCI) concept based on the Richardson extrapolation to a selected simple problem of a cantilever beam loaded with vertical forces at the tip end. The GCI method, popular in computational fluid dynamics, has been recently recommended for finite element (FE) applications in solid and structural mechanics. Based on the results obtained usually for three meshes, the GCI method enables one to determine, in an objective manner, the order of convergence to estimate the asymptotic solution and the bounds for discretization error. The example shows that the characteristics of the convergence depend on the selection of the quantity of interest, which can be local or a global functional such as the deflection considered here. The results differ for different FE formulations, and the difference is bigger when the nonlinearities (e.g., due to plastic response) are taken into account.
