The article deals with the relation between films and the concept of the national identity. These issues are discussed on the example of Serbian cinema in the 1990s. Using Anthony Smith’s approach to the visual representation of national identity, the ways in which films in Serbia construct national identity is discussed. After that, several films are analyzed that critically question the concept of nationalism. This analysis demonstrates how ideology, in this particular case, nationalistic ideology, at the semantic level can be related to films, one of the most influential segments of popular culture.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of the surface microstructure of chitosan films on the contact angle. Films without plasticising additives made of chitosan or regenerated chitosan were selected for the tests. A sessile drop method based on the European Pharmacopoeia was used to determine the contact angle. Due to the method of film production, the contact angle measurements were made on both the top and bottom surfaces of the film. For chitosan or regenerated chitosan films, the method of preparation slightly affected the difference in wettability between the top and bottom of the films, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. On the other hand, the wettability of the top and bottom of cellulose films varied greatly depending on the side of the film. Both chitosan and cellulose films had a homogeneous structure. There were differences in the microstructure between the top and the bottom of the sample in the cellulose film, a factor that affected the contact angle and thus the wettability of the surface.

This research aims to study the application of using films in teaching the Arabic language to Korean students. Recently, level based classes and developing communication skills are becoming important goals in foriegn language education. The most effective way to develop the student’s communication skills is to expose them to real life situations and related resources. Films are replicas of real life situations and thus are effective especially in teaching spoken language. This research implies the following things to Arabic education. First, it is best to provide realistic data to students to improve their communication skills. Selecting films that contain conversations and expressions that are used every day, while avoiding violence or contents of too much slang, will allow students to continuously remain interested and focused. Second, a program that connects films to CD-ROM for textbooks needs to be created. Additionally, there is a need to increase the understanding of spoken language through various study programs for Korean teachers. Finally, using interesting films to motivate students will have positive effects and will allow them to approach Arabic through understanding of the language rather than pure memorization.

In my paper I have concentrated on the negative aspects of globalization and have examined them in the films created in English-speaking countries, The United States of America and the United Kingdom. Based on the analysis of the following films, (Gury Burns, Waydowntown 2000), TV series (The Apprentice, 2003–6, TV documentary series), Wall Street (Oliver Stone, 1987) Bigger than Enron (Marc Shaffer, 2002), Darwin’s Nightmare (Hubert Sauper: 2004) and The Future of Food (Deborah Koons Garcia, 2005), I have concluded that although globalization is considered one of the most awe-inspiring phenomena both in economy and culture, it has also created negative indices, such as victimization of human subjects as unsuspecting targets of globalization.
W moim eseju koncentruje się na negatywnych aspektach globalizacji wyraźnie pokazanych w filmach pochodzących z krajów anglosaskich: Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki oraz Wielkiej Brytanii. W oparciu o analizę następujących filmów, (Gury Burns, Waydowntown 2000), TV series (The Apprentice, 2003–6), TV documentary series, Wall Street (Oliver Stone, 1987) Bigger than Enron (Marc Shaffer, 2002), Darwin's Nightmare (Hubert Sauper: 2004) and The Future of Food (Deborah Koons Garcia, 2005). Wyciągam wniosek, że globalizacja stworzyła negatywne zjawiska szczególnie w zakresie traktowania jednostek ludzkich. Mimo że globalizacja uważana jest za zjawisko pozytywne w ekonomii oraz w kulturze (szczególnie jeśli chodzi o rozpowszechnianie zjawisk kulturowych na całym globie ziemskim), traktuje ona jednostki ludzkie w sposób stereotypowy i bezduszny. Bohaterzy wyżej wymienionych filmów nie są pokazani jako indywidualne charaktery ale raczej jako przedstawiciele bezosobowej i stereotypowo traktowanej masy ludzkiej.

Opis:
The cornstarch: poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) films characterized by the alternating ratio of starch:PVA (100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80, and 0:100) and containing 30% of glycerol were prepared by solution casting. The films were irradiated with an absorbed dose of 25 kGy with gamma rays in a vacuum and with fast electrons in the air. The films characterized by a high content of starch appeared stiff, while the films characterized by a high content of PVA were highly flexible. The tensile strength and flexibility, as well as swelling and hydrophilicity, increased with the increase in the PVA content in the films. However, the tensile strength and wetting angle values achieved a minimum at an intermediate composition. It was found that irradiation enables to reduce hydrophilicity of the films accompanied by a decrease in their flexibility. No general conclusion concerning the effect of irradiation on tensile strength and swelling behavior can be derived. An increase in the homogeneity of the films and an increase in the compatibility of their components was found by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Strong interactions of the starch and the PVA components were discovered by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Degradation was found to be the prevailing process occurring in the films under the infl uence of irradiation. The possible accompanying crosslinking is discussed in terms of the gel content in the samples. Creation of various oxidation products in the films characterized by the modified composition was observed under the influence of irradiation carried out in the air. Basing on the obtained results it can be supposed that the selected starch-PVA compositions might appear useful as packagings of the products predicted for radiation decontamination.

W pracy zbadano możliwość recyklingu materiałowego folii papieropodobnych oraz podano charakterystykę właściwości użytkowych końcowego produktu wytworzonego przy użyciu regranulatu. Właściwości mechaniczne folii określono przy użyciu maszyny wytrzymałościowej na drodze prób statycznego rozciągania. Wyznaczono również wartości współczynnika tarcia oraz oceniono wytrzymałości zgrzewów. Wykazano, że możliwe jest pięciokrotne przetwórstwo odpadowych folii papieropodobnych bez wyraźnego pogorszenia ich właściwości wytrzymałościowych. Powstałe regranulaty można wykorzystywać dalej, jako dodatek do świeżego tworzywa lub w całości przerabiać na nowy, gotowy produkt.
Possibility of recycling paperlike composite foils and performance characteristics of the final product manufactured using regranulate were investigated. Mechanical properties of the foils were determined by the static tensile test in a strength machine. Also the friction coefficient and strength of welds were measured. It was shown that fivefold recycling process of paperlike foils without a significant degradation of their strength properties was possible. Obtained regranulates can be subsequently used as an additive to the fresh material or remanufacture into anew final product.

The present thesis aims at presenting wordplay in selected films by an American director Mel Brooks and comparing the original items with their Polish translations found in the dialogue lists prepared for the needs of Polish television and DVD edition by Elżbieta Gałązka-Salamon (TV version of both films), Janusz Kiezik (the DVD edition of “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”) and Gelula and Co., Inc. (DVD edition of “Spaceballs”). The films chosen for the needs of the analysis are “Spaceballs” released in 1987 and “Robin Hood: Men in Tights” released in 1993. The first one is a science-fiction story of a space pilot and his crew fighting against evil creatures in order to save a peace-loving planet and its beautiful princess. The main plot is enriched by witty observations on the problem of merchandizing and cowardly presidents of the whole nations as well as popular motives of power, friendship and love. The other film exploits an ageless story of a famous English hero of Sherwood who defended the poor, robbed the rich and opposed Prince John the Lackland’s brutal policy. Although the story follows well-known legends and stories along with Maid Marian and a famous fight over the toll, it is somehow twisted to suit contemporary viewers’ tastes by removing dark features of mediaeval times such as cruelty, religious intolerance or overwhelming dirt and introducing characters not commonly associated with Robin Hood like Arab exchange students or a witch called Latrine. Apart from the name of the director and the screenwriter Mel Brooks, both of the discussed films have several other features in common. Firstly, they are parodies of certain types of popular films and therefore present a lot of verbal and situational humour. This generic feature makes them a reasonable choice as it is the word games that mostly contribute to the idea of verbal humour and a lot of such structures can be found in those two films. Secondly, the films selected as the basis of Mel Brooks’ parodies were huge blockbusters at certain times and the majority of movie-goers will probably be familiar with them. This can be noticed in the case of the jokes which make fun of George Lucas’ “Star Wars” or Ridley Scott’s “Alien” in “Spaceballs” or Kevin Costner’s “Prince of Thieves” which is the foundation for “Robin Hood: Men in Tights”. Finally, the majority of Mel Brooks’ works follow the same pattern when forming puns or other types of jokes. Thus, the choice of the films can be considered justified. The author of the present thesis is going to examine the most representative examples of word games selected from the two films and compare them with their Polish equivalents focusing on the translation strategies and the differences between voice-over and subtitles forms of the same wordplay. The author’s reasons for choosing this topic are twofold. Firstly, it is the scientific motive as not too much literature concerning the issue can be found in Poland. Although the name of Mel Brooks and the titles of his most famous films are easily recognizable as they have been shown on TV several times, no study on the difficulties a translator can encounter while working on humour-based items in the discussed productions has been found by the author. Therefore, one can hope the thesis will help to call scholars’ attention to the problem. Secondly, it is an opportunity to analyze various types of wordplay and discuss the proficiency of Polish professional translators at remaining true to the original literal meaning of the item but simultaneously evoking the same joyful reaction from Polish viewers as it is in the case of source language ones. The personal reasons for choosing the topic of translating word games in Mel Brooks’ films are simple. Comedies are meant to be funny and make people laugh, but the reactions certain films evoked in different cultures, which the author had opportunity to observe, made her wonder how much the translation strategies applied for the needs of particular word games change the implicit meaning of the discussed items and consequently trigger different responses. The character of the following thesis will be strictly descriptive. The theoretical part is going to be divided into two chapters. The first chapter will be devoted to the notion of audiovisual translation. As the features of various types of AVT greatly influence the way the translation is carried out, voice-over, subtitling and dubbing will be circumstantiated, focusing on their advantages and constrains. The next chapter will deal with the issue of wordplay. The author is going to concentrate on the definition and numerous classifications found in the literature pointing out their use for the needs of the present thesis. This will be promptly followed by the notion of untranslatability and the strategies applied for translating wordplay as they are presented in numerous works by prominent linguists and theoreticians of translation. Those two chapters are to form a theoretical background needed for the next section. The third chapter will introduce a detailed analysis of selected word games focusing on their meaning to the plot, the techniques used for creating a humorous effect on source language viewers and then comparing them with the Polish translation. As two types of audiovisual translation will be discussed here, the differences between subtitles and the voice-over version will be considered as well. Finally, the conclusions will be drawn based on the previous discussion along with the brief summary of the findings. It will also provide an opportunity for the author of the thesis to reflect on the value of good film translation and to attempt the comparison of the works of Polish specialists in the field of AVT.

The Arrhenius method was used to investigate the effect of accelerated aging conditions on the physical and mechanical properties of polymer films for technical, medical, food and office applications. Temperature and UV radiation were taken into account as environmental factors. It was shown that the tested films are more sensitive to thermal degradation than UV radiation. The reduction in tensile strength after thermal aging does not exceed 40%, and in the case of UV radiation, 14%. The estimated lifetime of the tested films is over 5 years.
Metodą Arrheniusa zbadano wpływ warunków przyspieszonego starzenia na właściwości fizyko-mechaniczne folii polimerowych do zastosowań technicznych, medycznych, spożywczych i biurowych. Jako czynniki środowiskowe uwzględniono temperaturę i promieniowanie UV. Wykazano, że badane folie są bardziej wrażliwe na degradację termiczną niż promieniowanie UV. Zmniejszenie wytrzymałości na rozciąganie po starzeniu termicznym nie przekracza 40%, a w przypadku promieniowania UV, 14%. Oszacowany czas życia badanych folii wynosi ponad 5 lat.

The article focuses on the phenomenon of historical memory in Spain and the proces of its recovery. The author chose cinema as a medium for passing memory and presented three movies, that refer to the period of Spanish Civil War and Franco’s regime: ¡Ay, Carmela! by Carlos Saura, La hora de los valientes by Antonio Mercero and La hora de los valientes by José Luís Cuerda. A characteristic feature of those films is nostalgia for the lost paradise embodied by the Second Republic and repugnance for Franco’s regime. They also reflect dominant conviction about Spain divided into two opposing worlds where communication is impossible. There is a clear tendency to divide the memory and history in Spain into black and white and people into just and unjust depending on their attitude towards the regime of Franco. We can observe that especially one memory in Spanish cinema is highlighted – the memory of the republicans

The paper presents the results of the investigation into the themo-mechanical, rheological and structural properties of films made from recycled polyethylenes in the “foil-to-foil” system, the comparative material were films made from primary raw materials. The films were prepared by melt mixing technique in a single screw extruder. Primary polyethylenes, recyclates and their blends were used. The aim of the research was to determine the quality of the materials derived from the closed process of the recycling of polyethylene film in comparison to virgin plastics. The mechanical properties of the films were measured by tensile test and puncture test. The morphology was studied using polarized light microscopy (POM) and FT-IR measurements. DSC and shrinkage were used to determine thermal behavior and the degree of crystallinity. The results showed that the obtained recycled blends rLDPE/rLLDPE are high-quality material with good processing properties susceptible to the production of thin films. Studies on the mechanical properties of the recycled blends showed an increase in tensile strength and elongation. An increase in the melting temperature and heat of fusion, as determined from DSC, was observed with an increase in the recycled blends. Puncture results demonstrated that the post-consumer recycled film was more strength than the film made from virgin plastics. Thus, these materials may serve as valuable recycled plastics useful for packaging applications.

The article presents the tools and methods for the study of new media. The author describes the programs created by the new trend in science called digital humanities. The main thesis is that the biggest problem of the contemporary media studies is the study of the great collection of data – which is the big date. In the article presented new ways to study films on the example of analysis of Star Wars. The main method of interpretation and presentation of research results was the visualization.

Opis:
This article presents changes that have occurred in recent years on the market for polyamides (PA). Attention is given to the various factors which brought about the changes. Demand and production figures are shown and the biggest players in production and commerce are indicated. The share of polyamides is compared with other polymers, and the demand for polyamide resins from various segments of industry is enumerated. Various figures characterizing the market are quoted. While stability is observed in the production segment of classical polyamide fibres, much attention is given to the dynamic growth in the sector of polyamide resins. Impressive changes both in quality and quantity are taking place in the consumption of PA resins in many industry branches: the car industry, electrical and electronic appliances, civil engineering, packaging, and many others. Examples are given in the article of modern solutions and products put on the market as a result of close cooperation between R&D centers, industry and consumers. Most of the information contained herein is concerned with classical polyamides i.e. PA6 and PA66, yet other polyamides like aromatic-, long-chain-, and bio-polyamides are also highlighted.
W artykule przedstawiono zmiany, jakie zachodzą w okresie ostatnich lat na rynku poliamidów. Zwrócono uwagę na szereg czynników wpływających na te zmiany. Przedstawiono dane dotyczące wielkości zapotrzebowania, produkcji oraz wymieniono najpoważniejszych, światowych producentów poliamidów. Porównano udziały poliamidów w stosunku do innych polimerów w produkcji włókien i tworzyw oraz zestawiono procentowe udziały w zapotrzebowaniu poszczególnych gałęzi gospodarki na tworzywa poliamidowe. Podano także szereg informacji liczbowych dotyczących tego rynku. Przy dość stabilnej sytuacji dotyczącej klasycznej produkcji różnego włókien poliamidowych, dużo miejsca poświęcono prężnie rozwijającemu się rynkowi tworzyw poliamidowych. Dotyczy to zmian zarówno ilościowych jak i jakościowych w bardzo wielu dziedzinach w takich jak motoryzacja, przemysł elektryczny, przemysł elektroniczny, opakowania, budownictwo i w wielu innych. Opisano w artykule szereg nowoczesnych rozwiązań wprowadzanych na rynek oraz nowe produkty powstające w wyniku dobrej współpracy między ośrodkami badawczymi, a odbiorcami. Przedstawione informacje dotyczyły głównie dominujących w dalszym ciągu na rynku klasycznych poliamidów PA6 i PA66. Ponadto zawarto także szereg informacji dotyczących poliamidów długołańcuchowych, poliamidów aromatycznych i biopoliamidów.

Opis:
The present analysis is focused on the issue of interactions of individuals with mathematics in films and strives to show why the question of the accuracy of mathematical formulas is not crucial to films and, therefore, what their main functions in the creation of the diegetic and the outer world are. In order to achieve the set aim, I ground my reflection in the idea suggested in Math Goes to the Movies, i.e. that mathematics is not presented in films only as an abstract theory, but it also carries a creative potential. Good Will Hunting (1997), A Beautiful Mind (2001) and Pi (1998) are the films in which mathematics is a substantial driving force, influencing both the gradual development and consolidation of characters. In this work, the films serve as the research material.
Niniejsza analiza koncentruje się na problematyce interakcji jednostek z matematyką w filmach i stara się pokazać, dlaczego kwestia ścisłości formuł matematycznych nie jest kluczowa dla filmów oraz jakie są ich główne funkcje w tworzeniu świata diegetycznego i zewnętrznego. Aby osiągnąć wyznaczony cel, autorka opiera swoje refleksje na tezie zaproponowanej w Math Goes to the Movies, czyli na tym, że matematyka nie jest prezentowana w filmach tylko jako abstrakcyjna teoria, ale ma też potencjał twórczy. Buntownik z wyboru (1997), Piękny umysł (2001) i Pi (1998) to filmy, jakimi autorka posługuje się jako materiałem badawczym a w których matematyka jest istotną siłą napędową, wpływającą zarówno na stopniowy rozwój, jak i na umocnienie postaci.
