Opis:
This article deals with the vibrations of a nonprismatic thin-walled beam with an open cross section and any geometrical parameters. The thin-walled beam model presented in this article was described using the membrane shell theory, whilst the equations were derived based on the Vlasov theory assumptions. The model is a generalisation of the model presented by Wilde (1968) in ‘The torsion of thin-walled bars with variable cross-section’, Archives of Mechanics, 4, 20, pp. 431–443. The Hamilton principle was used to derive equations describing the vibrations of the beam. The equations were derived relative to an arbitrary rectilinear reference axis, taking into account the curving of the beam axis and the axis formed by the shear centres of the beam cross sections. In most works known to the present authors, the equations describing the nonprismatic thin-walled beam vibration problem do not take into account the effects stemming from the curving (the inclination of the walls of the thin-walledcross section towards to the beam axis) of the analysed systems. The recurrence algorithm described in Lewanowicz’s work (1976) ‘Construction of a recurrence relation of the lowest order for coefficients of the Gegenbauer series’, Applicationes Mathematicae, XV(3), pp. 345–396, was used to solve the derived equations with variable coefficients. The obtained solutions of the equations have the form of series relative to Legendre polynomials. A numerical example dealing with the free vibrations of the beam was solved to verify the model and the effectiveness of the presented solution method. The results were compared with the results yielded by finite elements method (FEM).

Opis:
This paper presents the free vibration problem of beam with additionally attached mass element. The considered system can be treated as simplified to twodimensional model of the bridge crane. In this model the displacement of the hoist along the girder is analyzed and the longitudinal motion of the bridge crane does not occur. Based on the Hamilton’s principle, the boundary problem for this system has been formulated. On the basis of numerical simulations the influence of the position of the mass element (representing the hoist and mass of the load) on the free vibration frequencies of the system has been presented. The accepted mathematical model has been verified by the experimental studies.

Opis:
The paper deals with free vibrations of a uniform asymmetric shaft. As an example of asymmetry, a shaft of rectangular cross section is chosen. It is assumed that the shaft is simply supported in two bearings and rotates with constant angular velocity, and that the damping forces can be neglected. Bending vibrations of the shaft caused by an initial disturbance of its equilibrium position are considered. For their description the co-rotating coordinate system and the fixed coordinate system are used. The Euler-Bernoulli theory of bending of beams is utilized.

Opis:
The paper deals with free and forced vibrations of a horizontal thin elastic plate submerged in an infinite layer of fluid of constant depth. In free vibrations, the pressure load on the plate results from assumed displacements of the plate. In forced vibrations, the fluid pressure is mainly induced by water waves arriving at the plate. In both cases, we have a coupled problem of hydrodynamics in which the plate and fluid motions are coupled through boundary conditions at the plate surface. At the same time, the pressure load on the plate depends on the gap between the plate and the fluid bottom. The motion of the plate is accompanied by the fluid motion. This leads to the so-called co-vibrating mass of fluid, which strongly changes the eigenfrequencies of the plate. In formulation of this problem, a linear theory of small deflections of the plate is employed. In order to calculate the fluid pressure, a solution of Laplace’s equation is constructed in the doubly connected infinite fluid domain. To this end, this infinite domain is divided into sub-domains of simple geometry, and the solution of the problem equation is constructed separately for each of these domains. Numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the formulation developed in this paper.

In this paper, the issue of shape optimization of a column subjected to the generalized load with a force directed towards the positive pole (L. Tomski’s load, specific load) was considered. Based on the Hamilton’s principle, the differential equations of movement and boundary conditions describing the system were formulated. Taking into account a kinetic criterion of stability loss and a condition of constant total volume, the scope of changes in natural frequency as a function of an external load was determined with selected geometrical and physical parameters of the loading structure. On the basis of obtained results, values of geometrical parameters of individual column segments were determined, at which the maximum critical load value was obtained. In order to find the maximum critical force, which is a function of many variables, the simulated annealing algorithm was used.

Opis:
The paper deals with free vibrations of a horizontal thin elastic circular plate submerged in an infinite layer of fluid of constant depth. The motion of the plate is accompanied by the fluid motion, and thus, the pressure load on this plate results from displacements of the plate in time. The plate and fluid motions depend on boundary conditions, and, in particular, the pressure load depends on the gap between the plate and the fluid bottom. In theoretical description of this phenomenon, we deal with a coupled problem of hydrodynamics in which the plate and fluid motions are coupled through boundary conditions at the plate surfaces. This coupling leads to the so-called co-vibrating (added) mass of fluid, which significantly changes the fundamental frequencies (eigenfrequencies) of the plate. In formulation of the problem, a linear theory of small deflections of the plate is employed. At the same time, one assumes the potential fluid motion with the potential function satisfying Laplace’s equation within the fluid domain and appropriate boundary conditions at fluid boundaries. In order to solve the problem, the infinite fluid domain is divided into sub-domains of simple geometry, and the solution of problem equations is constructed separately for each of these domains. Numerical experiments have been conducted to illustrate the formulation developed in this paper.

In this note free vibrations of plate bands with functionally graded properties, resting on an elastic foundation, are investigated. On the micro-level, these plate bands have a tolerance- -periodic structure. It can be shown that in dynamic problems of those objects, the effect of the microstructure size plays a role. This effect can be described in the framework of the tolerance model, which is presented here for these bands. Obtained results are evaluated introducing the asymptotic model. Both fundamental and higher free vibration frequencies of these plate bands are calculated using the Ritz method. The effects of differences of material plate properties in the cell on the microlevel and of the foundation are shown.

The subject of the results of theoretical and numerical studies measures to designate the effect of pre-stress on the vibration of geometrically non-linear column exposed to the load force directed to the positive pole. Considering the total mechanical energy of the system the equation of motion and the boundary conditions necessary to solve the boundary problem were determined. Based on the kinetic stability criterion the range of values of internal compression forces was determined in which the growth of critical load of the column above the local loss of stability was achieved. In the research the geometrically non-linear system was analysed with variable asymmetry of bending stiffness and at selected values of geometrical parameters of the head realizing the load.

Depending on the mutual relation between external load, tendon’s length parameter resulting from the direction of loading force and the free vibration frequency parameter, the slope of characteristic curves of a considered column subjected to force directed towards the positive pole can take the negative, zero and positive value. The purpose of this paper is to determine the criterion that allows for classification of an analysed structure to divergent or divergent pseudo-fluttering type of system. On the basis of obtained formulas, the ranges of parameters describing the Winkler elastic foundation for which the considered system may be classified as one of the abovementioned types were determined.

Opis:
The linear and geometrically nonlinear free and forced vibrations of Euler-Bernoulli beams with multicracks are investigated using the crack equivalent rotational spring model and the beam transfer matrix method. The Newton Raphson solution of the transcendental frequency equation corresponding to the linear case leads to the cracked beam linear frequencies and mode shapes. Considering the nonlinear case, the beam transverse displacement is expanded as a series of the linear modes calculated before. Using the discretised expressions for the total strain and kinetic energies and Hamilton’s principle, the nonlinear amplitude equation is obtained and solved using the so-called second formulation, developed previously for similar nonlinear structural dynamic problems, to obtain the multi-cracked beam backbone curves and the corresponding amplitude dependent nonlinear mode shapes. Considering the forced vibration case, the nonlinear frequency response functions obtained numerically near to the fundamental nonlinear mode using a single mode approach show the effects of the number of cracks, their locations and depths, and the level of the concentric harmonic force. The inverse problem is explored using the frequency contour plot method to identify crack parameters, such as the crack locations and depths. Satisfactory comparisons are made with previous analytical results.

The possibilities of application of the perturbation method to the analysis of strongly non-linear free vibrations of beams are discussed. The geometrical non-linearity is taken into account. The finite element method is used for the description of the dynamic behaviour of beams. The first order perturbation equation is solved and the obtained solution is compared with the solution found with the help of the harmonic balance method which is widely used and applicable to the analysis of strongly non-linear dynamic systems. It was proved that both solutions are almost identical and differences are negligibly small. The numerical procedure enabling determination of backbone curves is also briefly described. Theoretical results are supplemented by a description of the results of typical calculations.
