Opis:
Precipitation and intensity of precipitation are the most important parameters of soil profile water balance. Precipitation values give the information about amount of water reaching the soil surface. Intensity of the precipitation determines the amount of water accumulated in a soil profile and the amount of runoff water. The aim of the paper was to show the importance of consideration of precipitation distribution approximation in water dynamics modelling in soil profile taking into account preferential water flow.

Opis:
We present the results of species distribution modeling conducted on macrobenthic occurrence data collected between 2002 and 2014 in Arctic fjord – Hornsund. We focus on species from Mollusca and Crustacea taxa. This study investigates the importance of individual environmental factors for benthic species distribution, with a special emphasis on bottom water temperature. It aims to verify the hypothesis that the distribution of species is controlled by low water temperatures in the fjord and that the inner basins of the fjord serve as potential refugia for Arctic species threatened by the climate change-related intensification of warmer water inflows. Our results confirm the importance of bottom water temperature in regulating the presence of benthic fauna in the Hornsund fjord. The distribution of studied species is clearly related to specific water mass – colder (<1°C) or warmer (>1°C); and the preferred temperature regimes seem to be species specific and unrelated to analyzed groups. This study supports the notion that inner basins of the Hornsund fjord are potential refugia for cold water Arctic fauna, while the outer and central basins provide suitable habitats for fauna that prefer warmer waters.

Opis:
Based on a monthly field sampling over a year in the Kochi backwaters (KBW), this study presents the larval ecology of black clam and discusses how an extensive saltwater barrage [Thannermukkom barrage (TB)] impacted the natural black clam resource distribution. Spatial variations in salinity were found minimal during the Southwest Monsoon (June—September) due to the predominance of the freshwater associated with heavy monsoonal rainfall. Conversely, significant spatial changes in salinity were evident during the Pre-Southwest Monsoon (March—May) and Post-Southwest Monsoon (October—February). Monthly sampling exercises revealed that the black clam stock in the KBW breeds throughout the year, as their larvae were found (8 indiv. m—3—494 indiv. m—3) in all the locations. This observation is the modification of the traditional belief that black clam in the KBW breeds only twice a year. Mesohaline condition (salinity 5—18) is the most conducive for peak spawning and larval production. There were two peaks of larval production in the KBW over a year, mainly associated with the prevalence of the optimum salinity conditions on different spatial scales. The closing of the TB after the Southwest Monsoon (September) causes shrinkage of the area of the oligohaline and mesohaline conditions, the most conducive environment for the peak spawning and larval production of black clam in the KBW. This study presents a clear case of how human alterations of the natural environment impact valuable biological resources, which may apply to many similar aquatic ecosystems across the globe.

Small water bodies are very diversified environmentally, and also characterized by a considerable variation range of environmental parameters. these two features are responsible for the fact that the fauna of water mites is characterized by a considerable species diversity and that eurytopic species are prevalent. Due to the eurytopic character of the species it is very difficult to define the rules governing their environmental distribution, which probably often has a local character. The present study is an attempt at analyzing this problem, focusing on water mite fauna of kettle holes in Rostock surroundings (Germany). The main factor diversifying the fauna of studied reservoirs is their trophism. Correspondence analysis distinguished three separate groups among the reservoirs. the isolation of the reservoirs was an important factor diversifying the water mite fauna.

Opis:
Marble powder is one of carbonate rock amendments that is used to improve soil reaction. We hypothesized that the powdered marble addition can cause favorable changes in hydraulic properties of sandy soils. Six levels of marble powder addition to an aridisol soil (0%; M0; 5%; M5; 10%; M10; 15%; M15; 20%; M20 and 25%, M25; by bulk volume) were analyzed in triplicate. The saturated hydraulic conductivity and soil water retention curves were obtained. Pore space properties were investigated using soil water retention curves, mercury intrusion porosimetry and scanning electron microscopy. The saturated hydraulic conductivity significantly decreased (between 83 and 97% for M5 and M25 respectively) and parameters α and n of the van Genuchten model significantly decreased in marble-amended soils. Both field capacity and permanent wilting point increased with the addition of marble powder. Plant-available water, increased significantly until 10% of marble powder application; higher percentages of application did not provide additional significant changes in the plant-available water. Pore space distributions from soil water retention curves parameters showed an increase in the pore size range and a decrease in the average pore size; pore space distribution from the scanning electron microscopy also showed the presence of a new family of dominant pore sizes which was not detected by the soil water retention curves parameters approach. It was concluded that the addition of marble powder can improve the ability of soil to store water providing an advantage for irrigation water management in water scarce environments. Further research will have to address the impact of marble powder amendment under field semi-arid conditions.

Opis:
The water conductivity of arctic zone soils derived in different micro-relief forms was determined. The greatest water conductivity at the 0-5 cm depth for the higher values of water potentials (> -7 kJ m-3) was shown by tundra polygons (Brunic-Turbic Cryosol, Arenic) – 904-0.09 cm day-1, whereas the lowest were exhibited by Turbic Cryosols – 95-0.05 cm day-1. Between -16 and -100 kJ m-3, the water conductivity for tundra polygons rapidly decreased to 0.0001 cm day-1, whereas their decrease for the other forms was much lower and in consequence the values were 0.007, 0.04, and 0.01 cm day-1 for the mud boils (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), cell forms (Turbic Cryosol (Siltic, Skeletic)), and sorted circles (Turbic Cryosol (Skeletic)), respectively. In the 10-15 cm layer, the shape of water conducti-vity curves for the higher values of water potentials is nearly the same as for the upper layer. Similarly, the water conductivity is the highest – 0.2 cm day-1 for tundra polygons. For the lower water potentials, the differences in water conductivity increase to the decrease of soil water potential. At the lowest potential the water conductivity is the highest for sorted circles – 0.02 cm day-1 and the lowest in tundra polygons – 0.00002 cm day-1.

Azolla filiculoides has been an ephemeral plant in Poland since the end of the 20th century. In the last 15 years this species appeared in 5 locations in south-west Poland. Habitat and plants of two populations became destroyed, three other still exist. A. filiculoides occurs in eutrophic or even polluted water where it forms dense mats, up to 10 cm thick. It stays sterile and propagates only in a vegetative manner. Frost resistance of Lower Silesia populations is higher than reported so far; fern may winter and rebuild the population after frost reaching 22oC. Size of the populations is changeable during the vegetation season. A. filiculoides occurs in water habitats and plant communities in which it substitutes Lemna minor.

Opis:
This study examines the performance of pelagic and benthic Malacostraca in two glacial fjords of west Spitsbergen: Kongsfjorden, strongly influenced by warm Atlantic waters, and Hornsund which, because of the strong impact of the cold Sørkapp Current, has more of an Arctic character. The material was collected during 12 summer expeditions organized from 1997 to 2013. In all, 24 pelagic and 116 benthic taxa were recorded, most of them widely distributed Arctic-boreal species. The advection of different water masses from the shelf had a direct impact on the structure of the pelagic Malacostraca communities, resulting in the clear dominance of the sub-arctic hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum in Kongsfjorden and the great abundance of Decapoda larvae in Hornsund. The taxonomic, functional and size compositions of the benthic malacostracan assemblages varied between the two fjords, and also between the glacier-proximate inner bays and the main fjord basins, as a result of the varying dominance patterns of the same assemblage of species. There was a significant drop in species richness in the strongly disturbed glacial bays of both fjords, but only in Hornsund was this accompanied by a significant decrease in density and diversity, probably due to greater isolation and poorer quality of sediment organic matter in its innermost basin. Our results suggest that the diversity and distribution of benthic malacostracans in these two fjords are only distantly related to the different hydrological regimes; rather, they are governed by locally acting factors, such as depth, sediment type, the variety of microhabitats and the availability and quality of food.

The addition of biochar is often proposed to increase agricultural soil quality and crop yield, while at the same time sequestering carbon from the atmosphere to help mitigate global climate change. In this research, the pore-size distribution, and saturated hydraulic conductivity of sandy loam and clay loam soils amended with varying dosages (0-10% dry basis) and two different particle sizes (0.5-420 μm (PS1) or 421-841 μm (PS2)) of wood-derived biochar were investigated under compacted conditions (5, 10, or 15 standard Proctor rammer blows (5B, 10B, or 15B, respectively)). In the 5B compacted SL (SL-5B) soil, the volume of the soil fissures and transmission pores decreased, while the volume of the storage pores (SP) increased with increasing wood-derived biochar dosage. 23.1±0.9% of the volume of the 5B compacted clay loam (CL-5B) are storage pores, this value increased to 27.4±2.0% upon amendment with 10% PS1. The saturated hydraulic conductivity of the sandy loam-5B soil amended with 10% PS1 decreased from 6.8±0.3 to 0.80±0.03 mm h-1. The sandy loam farmland C emissions decreased by 0.071 tC ha-1 y-1, whereas CL farmland C emissions decreased by 0.091 tC ha-1 y-1.

The main 137Cs accumulation zone in the study area was found to be located at depths below the 50-metre isobath, i.e. below the layer of hydrodynamic activity. In coastal waters not influenced by the fresh water discharge from the Curonian Lagoon, 137Cs occurs mostly in soluble form. The particulate 137Cs activity concentration in the marine area affected by Curonian Lagoon water can make up 10% of the total 137Cs activity concentration. The circulation model was developed to assess the distribution of artificial radionuclides in Lithuanian territorial waters. The model was validated on the basis of data acquired during the measurement campaign in the Lithuanian part of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon in the years 1999–2001. The model enables the 137Cs activity concentration to be simulated as a passive admixture (error within c. 15%).

The distribution of phytoplankton and its relation to the hydrographic features in the north-eastern Adriatic was investigated in February 2008. The area of interest included a thermohaline gradient in the channel situated between the coast and the islands lying parallel to the coast. The gradient is controlled by the influx of oligotrophic karstic riverine water at the south-eastern end, subma rine springs in the middle part,an d warmer offshore waters at the north-western end of the channel. The change of temperature and salinity in the estuarine transition zone was accompanied by abundant diatoms and dinoflagellates below the halocline, with dominant chain-forming diatoms (Chaetoceros, Bacteriastrum) in abundances reaching 5×105 cells dm−3. The impact of coastal submarine springs detected by infrared remote sensing resulted in the growth of cyanobacteria in the nitrogen-depleted surface waters. The greater contribution of picoplankton, as well as of nanoplanktonic coccolithophorids and cryptophytes,in the outer channel system indicated their preference for oligotrophic conditions. Flow cytometric counts of nanophytoplankton were 10–30 times greater than inverted microscope counts. Cyanobacteria were about five times more abundant than picoeukaryotes. The study demonstrates how different techniques (remote sensing and in situ investigations) can be useful in understanding the biological and hydrographic set-up in the specific oligotrophic eastern Adriatic coastal environment.

Opis:
During August 2000 and February 2001 two cruises were carried out along the Egyptian Mediterranean Coast on the Egyptian r/v ‘El-Yarmouk’. The samples collected were used to study the ecology and distribution of hydromedusae and siphonophores during summer and winter. The density of hydromedusae was high in the inshore waters during summer (av. 71 org × 100 m−3), decreasing to 28 organisms per 100 m3 in the oceanic waters; in winter they were more abundant in the middle and offshore zones. Ato tal of 9 hydromedusae species were recorded during the present study, 8 of them in summer. The most common of these were Aglaura hemistoma, Olindias singularis, Liriope tetraphylla and Geryonia proboscidalis. Only 4 species were recorded during winter, including Cunina octonaria, which was not recorded during the summer. The nine species recorded in the present study are circumtropical. The siphonophore density was high in summer. In winter, the average standing crop of siphonophores fell to about 30% of that recorded in summer. 11 siphonophore species were recorded, 10 of them in summer; Cucullus campanula and Eudoxoides spiralis were the most common. Only 6 species were recorded in winter. These 11 species are widely distributed – they have been recorded from the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. Strong seasonality is thus a striking feature of Egyptian Mediterranean waters. Temperature is the most variable factor affecting the planktonic community, fluctuating between 26.5 and 27◦C in summer and between 16.3 and 17.5◦C in winter. The western part of the Egyptian coast, the area under study in this work, is poorly diversified in comparison with the eastern part.
