Opis:
Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS; Simons & Gaher, 2005) measures individual differences in experiencing and enduring negative emotional states. It consists of four dimensions: tolerance of perceived distress, assessment and acceptance of emotions, absorption of attention, and emotion regulation. The study aimed to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Polish adaptation of the Distress Tolerance Scale (DTS). A total of 1,210 individuals aged between 18 and 69 participated in the study (45% men, 51% women). After obtaining a Polish translation, we conducted EFA and CFA to examine the validity of the construct. EFA revealed a two-factor structure of the DTS, with Regulation as a separate factor. The original and modified CFA model with Regulation as a separate first-order factor showed an unsatisfactory fit to the data. Better CFA parameters were obtained with the reduced, three-factor version of the DTS. Four- and three-factor versions both show good internal consistency, temporal stability, convergent, and discriminant validity, with the exception of the Regulation subscale. As expected, distress tolerance is positively associated with positive affectivity, satisfaction with life, and self-control ability, but negatively with negative affectivity, perceived stress, and difficulties in emotion regulation. Men declared higher levels of distress tolerance than women. The Regulation subscale showed the weakest validity results; in terms of content, it seems to deviate from the concept of distress tolerance. With all those findings in mind, we recommend the valid and reliable three-factor version to be used in further studies.

The South African Maritime Safety Authority (“SAMSA”) responds to emergency calls from distressed ships. SAMSA, as a coastal authority, operates in terms of the South African maritime regulatory framework and its approach used to be robust. For example, South Africa is the first country to recognize the need to have a tug solely for the purpose of assisting ships in distress. However, close examination of the recent maritime incidents shows that SAMSA’s approach is falling short of keeping up with the ever changing challenges of places of refuge for ships in distress. This paper seeks to critically assess SAMSA’s approach to ships in distress as informed by the South African regulatory framework. The paper will further examine the possible solutions to identified shortcomings.

Opis:
It is widely accepted that a cancer diagnosis is a stressful and often traumatic experience for patients. Stress as a psychological side-effect of diagnosis has been well-researched. However, it is also possible that the life changing and potentially life-threatening aspects of disease may lead to symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), including heightened anxiety, intrusive and distressing thoughts, avoidance of reminders of the trauma and sleeping disturbances. These symptoms may be of short duration but studies show that is possible for patients to live with PTSD for years after diagnosis and treatment. Even if not all the criteria for a full PTSD diagnosis are present, subthreshold or subsyndromal PTSD has been shown to cause significant distress and affect the quality of life of breast cancer patients. Given that with earlier diagnoses and ever more effective treatment interventions, the number of women who survive cancer and whose survival intervals are longer, identification, monitoring and treatment of patients living with PTSD becomes ever more important.

Opis:
Introduction. Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS:NICU) by M. Miles et al. has been developed in order to assess the stress experienced by parents of infants being treated in Intensive Care Units. The measurement of parental stress enables the evaluation of nursing care effectiveness, as well as facilitating the determination of the level of progress made by parents in coping with the difficult situation they face. Objectives. The aims of the research include: (1) validation of the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Polish Version and (2) initial assessment of perceptions of parental stress in a group of 151 parents of infants treated in four NICUs in Poland. Materials and method. This quantitative cross-sectional study was performed among 151 parents (129 mothers and 22 fathers) of infants treated in four NICUs in central and eastern Poland. The respondents were asked to complete forms following the Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the Impact Event Scale – Revised (IES–R),and their demographics, which combined basic medical data along with socio-demographic data of both parents and children. Results. The three sub-scales distinguished on the basis of factor analysis (Infant Appearance, Parental Role Alteration, Sights and Sounds) explain in total 54.89% of variances. Cronbach’s alpha for the entire scale equals 0.92, while as follows for the particular sub-scales: Infant Appearance – 0.92; Parental Role Alteration – 0.86, and Sights and Sounds – 0.78. Conclusions. The Polish version of PSS:NICU is an accurate and reliable tool for the assessment of stress experienced by parents whose infants require treatment in NICUs.

Emotion Regulation (ER) has been identified as a factor that may be related to psychopathological symptoms. However, evidence about the relationship between ER and psychopathological symptoms is still unspecific. Moreover, although the ability of distress tolerance (DT) has gained increasing attention, it has not yet been sufficiently explored in relation to specific psychopathological symptoms. The aim of the study was to analyze the role of different specific ER mechanisms on various psychopathological symptoms, with particular emphasis on the role of DT. To do so, a correlational study was carried out. A total of 128 university students between 18 and 44 years old (mean age = 26.7, SD = 6.14) answered the Distress Tolerance Scale, the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and the Symptom Check List 90-Revised. For each psychopathological symptom (and for general distress), linear regression were applied. All models were statistically significant with differences in the amount of explained variance and in the predictors. DT predicted symptoms of depression, anxiety, obsessions and compulsions and general distress. The study highlights the importance of the different mechanisms of ER in each specific psychopathological symptom and their implications for mental health.

Opis:
My paper discusses the idea of destructive eroticism in the work of Fyodor Dostoevsky. Eros is posited here as manifesting in two, opposite forms: the Christian virtue of agape consisting in a humble service to a beloved person, and the Greek eros which in Dostoevsky is transformed into destructive love, one steeped in egoism and sadistic-masochistic impulses. I want to argue that destructive eroticism is for Dostoevsky of greatest interest, while love conceived as agape serves in his work only as a minor, normative projection, a tribute paid to the Russian Orthodox worldview. In my analysis I refer to Georges Bataille’s philosophical thought to combine the pattern of unfulfilled and ruinous love in Dostoevsky with his conviction that irrational aspects of man, his penchant to evil and transgression can be seen as a measure of the intensity and authenticity of one’s spiritual life. Contrary to religious interpretations of Dostoevsky, I argue that the author of Crime and Punishment prefers to cast his protagonists into the limbo of suffering, anguish and distress and therefore he ultimately rejects the possibility that human beings can content themselves with a mediocre life in which existential complacency is bought at a price of resignation from dangerous passions of which one could say that were “worth a life”.

Background. The aim of this study was to determine the fear of Covid-19 and pregnancy distress levels experienced by pregnant women who were admitted to the obstetrics emergency service during the pandemic. Material and methods. This descriptive study was conducted using the face-to-face interview technique with 194 pregnant women who met the inclusion criteria of the study and were admitted to the Obstetrics Emergency Service of the University of Health Sciences Zeynep Kamil Gynecology and Pediatrics Training and Research Hospital in Türkiye between December 2020 and February 2021. Results. The mean age of the pregnant women included in the study was 28.37, and 51.1% of them were found to be multiparous. The mean Fear of Covid-19 Scale (FCV-19S) of the pregnant women was 19.50±6.64 and the mean Tilburg Pregnancy Distress Scale (TPDS) was 34.79±6.82. It was determined that the educational status of the pregnant women differed statistically significantly (p<0.05) according to the FCV-19S. It was found that there is a positive and strong relationship between the FCV-19S and the TPDS (r=0.216; p=0.002) and “Negative Affect” (r=0.211; p=0.003). Conclusions. During the Covid-19 pandemic period, the Covid-19 fear and distress levels of the pregnant women who were admitted to the Obstetrics Emergency Service were determined as moderate. Since the fear of Covid-19 has an effect on pregnancy distress levels, it is recommended that nurses should be aware of the distress experienced by pregnant women and be their pregnancy support.
Wprowadzenie. Celem niniejszego badania było określenie lęku przed Covid-19 oraz poziomu stresu ciążowego u ciężarnych kobiet, które zostały przyjęte na położnicze oddziały ratunkowe w trakcie pandemii. Materiał i metody. Niniejsze opisowe badanie zostało przeprowadzone techniką wywiadu bezpośredniego z 194 kobietami ciężarnymi, które spełniły kryteria włączenia do badania i zostały przyjęte na położniczy oddział ratunkowy szpitala Zeynep Kamil Gynecology and Pediatrics Training and Research Hospital Uniwersytetu Nauk o Zdrowiu w Turcji w okresie od grudnia 2020 do lutego 2021 r. Wyniki.

Introduction: In this study, we examined the impact of government measures being imposed to slow down the spread of COVID-19 pandemic on long-distance runners’ sports habits and well-being. Material and methods: Data from a total of 323 runners (mean age 41.72 (8.78), 41.8% male) were analysed using quantitative and qualitative methods. Results: 46.9% of runners changed their running habits during the pandemic, 20.4% partly changed it. The poorest psychological well-being was found in a group that changed previous habits. Only 9 individuals reported no running activity at all, and 10 trained on a treadmill instead of a field. Overall, our respondents ran significantly more during the quarantine than before, which is partly explained by changed working conditions, reduced working hours, or lost jobs. The explanatory variables of excess running were previous mileage and distress. Conclusions: Running is suitable for relieving distress and restoring the feeling of freedom. All of these were confirmed by our subjects in the survey interview.

Objectives The study has aimed to identify the relations between the supplementary person–organization fit (P–O fit) and the perceived stress among managerial staff, with special regard to the mediating role of the effort–reward balance. Material and Methods The study sample consisted of 715 middle-level managers, aged 25–64 years old, employed in large companies. To measure the selected variables, the authors used the Questionnaire of Effort–Reward Imbalance (ERI), Perceived Stress Scale – 10 (PSS-10), and Person–Organization Fit Questionnaire. Results The regression analysis revealed that the perceived effort–reward imbalance partially mediated the negative relationship between the supplementary person–organization fit and stress. Conclusions The results suggest that even when the characteristics of the manager and organization are highly congruent, the managers will experience stress if their work involves heavy effort or when this effort is not compensated properly. This comparative study examines varying types of stress affecting university personnel’s working efficiency in Pakistan and the UK. Total 320 employees (160 from each economy) working in teaching and non-teaching (administrative) positions participated. A five-point Likert scale based online survey questionnaire was circulated through ‘gatekeepers’ via purposive, referral, networking and connections, while PLS-SEM is used for data analysis. Findings revealed that eustress significantly and positively affects working efficiency, while distress and hyper- and hypo-stress significantly and negatively affect university personnel’s working efficiency. Additionally, experienced and aged personnel have higher ‘eustress’, while young employees exhibit higher ‘distress’ due to lower emotional and moral support at the workplace. The UK university personnel are more vulnerable to stress than Pakistani university staff. Experienced employees frequently use social support to deal with hyper-stress.
Niniejsze badanie porównawcze analizuje różne rodzaje stresu wpływającego na wydajność pracy personelu uniwersyteckiego w Pakistanie i Wielkiej Brytanii. Łącznie wzięło w nim udział 320 pracowników (160 z każdej gospodarki) pracujących na stanowiskach dydaktycznych i niedydaktycznych (administracyjnych). Kwestionariusz ankiety online oparty na pięciopunktowej skali Likerta został rozesłany przez „strażników” za pośrednictwem celowości, skierowania, sieci i połączeń, podczas gdy PLS-SEM jest używany do analizy danych. Wyniki ujawniły, że eustres znacząco i pozytywnie wpływa na wydajność pracy, podczas gdy dystres oraz hiper- i hipostres znacząco i negatywnie wpływają na wydajność pracy personelu uniwersyteckiego. Ponadto doświadczeni i starsi pracownicy mają wyższy „eustres”, podczas gdy młodzi pracownicy wykazują większy „distres” z powodu mniejszego wsparcia emocjonalnego i moralnego w miejscu pracy.

Measurements included demographics, physical health (health status, physical activity), emotional states of depression, anxiety, and stress, as well as communication between nurses and physicians. To find explanatory factors for nurse burnout symptoms, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted using SPSS 28.0 statistical software. The significance level was set at p-values ≤ 0.05. Results. The data of 233 participants were analyzed, with 27.53±10.21 years of work experience. The majority of participants (93%) were female. The average age was 47.22±8.93 years. There were three significant variables that contributed to burnout symptoms: distress, nurse-physician communication and physical activity. Overall, the final model explained 58% of the variance. Conclusions. The results emphasize the significance of reducing distress, promoting healthy relationships between nurses and physicians, and encouraging physical activity as ways to lessen burnout among nurses. Since burnout among nurses doesn’t dissipate naturally, it necessitates deliberate intervention.
Wprowadzenie. Materiał i metody. Pielęgniarki i pielęgniarze pracujący w warunkach szpitalnych zaproszono do wzięcia udziału w ankiecie internetowej w 2023 roku. Pomiary obejmowały dane demograficzne, zdrowie fizyczne (stan zdrowia, aktywność fizyczną), stany emocjonalne depresji, lęku i stresu, a także komunikację między personelem pielęgniarskim i lekarzami. W celu stwierdzenia czynników wyjaśniających objawy wypalenia zawodowego pielęgniarek i pielęgniarzy, przeprowadzono hierarchiczną analizę regresji przy użyciu oprogramowania statystycznego SPSS 28.0. Poziom istotności został ustalony na poziomie wartości p≤0,05. Wyniki. Przeanalizowano dane 233 uczestników, mających średnio 27,53±10,21 lat doświadczenia zawodowego. Większość uczestników (93%) stanowiły kobiety. Średnia wieku wynosiła 47,22±8,93 lat. Stwierdzono trzy istotne zmienne, które przyczyniły się do wystąpienia objawów wypalenia zawodowego: zaniepokojenie, komunikacja pielęgniarka-lekarz i aktywność fizyczna. Ogólnie ostateczny model wyjaśnił 58% wariancji. Wnioski. Wyniki podkreślają znaczenie zmniejszania stresu, promowania zdrowych relacji między personelem pielęgniarskim i lekarzami oraz zachęcania do aktywności fizycznej jako sposobów na zmniejszenie wypalenia zawodowego wśród pielęgniarek i pielęgniarzy. Ponieważ wypalenie zawodowe wśród personelu pielęgniarskiego nie ustępuje w sposób naturalny, wymaga ono celowej interwencji.
