Decision support systems (DSS) provide decision-makers with an interactive environment for analyses of information with various models to help solve unstructured and NP-hard problems. The important aspect of DSS is a technical and technological approach to the design and implementation of the above systems. A traditional approach to DSS engineering and implementation requires a great deal of effort for its maintenance. However, the enterprises would like to concentrate on its core competitiveness instead of non-core activities like IT maintenance. As a result of this, IT outsourcing has became a very popular event. Thus there is a growing need for intelligent decision support tools capable of assisting a decision maker in many problems in SMEs (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises). In this paper we present the use of declarative programming (constraint logic programming and relational SQL database) as an environment and framework for such decision support systems in an application service providing (ASP) model.

This paper aims to make an approach that supports the process of taking investment decision in case if the primary project cannot be completed. The factors, which occur in investment decision-making, often have an imprecise and uncertain form. In this case may be used a fuzzy neural system that supports the choice of alternative project by improvement in the estimates precision for requested resources. The paper contains an example with the using of different approaches in the estimation of time for project critical tasks that commit the substantial enterprise resources.

Scheduling problems appear frequently at different levels of decisions. They are usually characterized by many types of constraints, which make them unstructured and difficult to solve (NP-complete). Traditional mathematical programming approaches are deficient because their representation of constraints is artificial (using 0-1 variables). Unlike traditional approaches, constraint logic programming (CLP) provides for a natural representation of heterogeneous constraints. In CLP we state the problem requirements by constraints; we do not need to specify how to meet these requirements. In this paper we propose a declarative framework for decision support system (DSS) for constrained search problems implemented by CLP and relational SQL database. We illustrate this concept by the implementation of a DSS for scheduling problems with external resources in different production organization environments.

Opis:
Constraint programming (CP) is an emergent software technology for declarative description and effective solving of large combinatorial problems especially in areas of integrated production planning. In that context, the CP can be considered as a well-suited framework for development of decision making software supporting small and medium size enterprises in the course of Production Process Planning (PPP). The problem considered regards of finding of computationally effective approach aimed at scheduling of a new project subject to constraints imposed by a multi–project environment. In other words, we are looking for an answer whether a given production order specified by its cost and completion time can be accepted in a given manufacturing system specified by available production capability, i.e., the time-constrained resources availability. The problem belongs to a class of multi-mode case project scheduling problems, where the problem of finding a feasible solution is NPcomplete. The aim of the paper is to present the CP modeling framework as well as to illustrate its application to decision making in the case of a new production order evaluation. So, the contribution emphasizes benefits derived from CPbased DSS and focuses on constraint satisfaction driven decision-making rather than on an optimal solution searching.

The objective of the presented research is to construct a model of a patient's health that is based on the idea of cognitive map, a graphical knowledge-representation tool. The application of the proposed model for medical diagnosis is the practical goal of the research. Initially, we provide a brief review of the related works on medical decision support systems and cognitive maps. Afterwards, we sketch the general idea of the conceptual approach to the representation of medical knowledge and provide a new formulation of the medical diagnosis problem. Then, we define our model based on associational cognitive maps and show how it can be applied to diagnosis support. Due to the relative ease of understanding of cognitive map, the model can be easily interpreted and used, thereby making medical knowledge widely available through computer consultation systems. The application example presented is based on a relatively simple, real medical case.

In this work we obtained the solution of increasing of adequacy of models of multicriteria evaluation for the project and management decision support systems. Modifications of the utility functions of partial criteria and the procedure for calculating their values are proposed, which makes it possible to improve the accuracy of approximation of the preferences of the person making the decision, as well as significantly reduce the time for calculating their values. For the parametric synthesis of universal multicriteria estimation models based on the Kolmogorov-Gabor polynomial, an improvement in the method of comparator identification by calculating the Chebyshev point and the discrepancy vector is proposed.

Improving product quality while making decisions remains a challenge. The objective of this research was to develop a model that supports the precise enhancement of product quality through comprehensive analysis of possibilities, product incompatibilities, root causes, and recommended improvement actions. The model incorporated various tools and methods such as the SMARTER method, expert team selection, brainstorming, Ishikawa diagram, 5M+E rule, FAHP, and FTOPSIS methods. The study demonstrated that integrating quality management tools and decision-making methods into a unified model enables the accurate prioritization of activities for product quality management. This integrated approach represents the novelty of this research. The model was evaluated using a mechanical seal made of 410 alloy. The research findings can be valuable to enterprises seeking to enhance product quality at any stage of production, particularly for modified or new products.

The Negotiation Support Systems often implement multiple criteria decision aiding (MCDA) techniques for building a negotiation scoring system. Those formal models should meet the needs, motivations, expectations, and cognitive abilities of users. In this paper, we try to explore the effects of decision maker’s subjective perception of ease of use, time requirements, interface, preference representation, and efficiency of a particular MCDA method on the choice regarding the future use of this method. The multinomial logistic regression model is built and analysed. The analysis is based on data from online decision making experiments, where three MCDA methods were implemented, i.e. AHP, SMART, and TOPSIS. The study provides several interesting findings, concerning the behavioural aspects of multiple criteria decision aiding in software support systems. Most of the users recommended TOPSIS as the best one for supporting decisions in the future. This is a fast technique, for which we used an attractive graphical interface, suggesting that these factors play a crucial role in the users’ choices. However, the causative regression model showed that the user’s positive experience in using a particular method, i.e. its effectiveness in solving an exemplary numerical case, has the highest impact on the method’s choice for future use. The second most important factor is the adequacy in representing the user’s preferences by this method. We show, however, that the strengths of effects and their significance may vary across the methods. Understanding the decision maker’s evaluations of the MCDA techniques may help build a cognitive negotiation support system that satisfies the user’s expectations.

At NTNU in Norway an 8-year research project has been established to (among other things) research the interaction between humans and unmanned, autonomous ships. The human will become even more important when ship operator will be located remotely in shore control centers ashore. This concept paper will take a closer look on remote decision-making by operators monitoring several ships. How can interface design help them to get quickly into-the-loop when something unexpected suddenly happens? I will in this paper suggest keeping a copy of the AI expert-system controlling the ship, updated and running in parallel in the control center to keep the operator’s situation awareness during short communication glitches. Also, to design a “quickly-getting-into-the-loop-display” which automatically will appear in an alarm situation, allowing the operator just-in-time and simple-to-understand information. I will also stress the important of the concept automation transparency.

This article presents the concept of a decision support system for maritime search, rescue and salvage operations. It describes the main ideas for systems in three areas of maritime rescue – search and rescue (saving lives), salvage (saving property at sea), and environment protection operations. It contains an analysis of the factors influencing the decisions of both marine navigators and shore-based centres. The general ideas of the systems are presented in the form of flow charts. An analysis was made of input data, working procedures, and the decisions based on these data and procedures. The simplified algorithm of the system is described. The principles of system utilisation are explained, developmental trends are described, and conclusions are drawn.

Solving complex, decision-making problems requires application of decision support systems. The best solving strategy can be defined for each particular problem. The strategy refers to a sequence solving elementary subproblems. The aim of the paper is to present the evaluating criterion to estimate the efficiency of searching strategies. The criterion proposed offers a possibility to estimate the time needed to solve a constraint satisfaction problem. An illustrative example is provided.

Port approaches are high-traffic areas with limited manoeuvring space. Navigation in such areas requires the analysis of large amounts of information, which can impede decision processes. One solution may be the development of decision support systems dedicated to these areas. This paper presents an attempt to build a navigation decision support system operable in the approach area leading to the port of Świnoujście (Poland), with ship domain implemented as a safety criterion. Assumptions for a decision support system to be used by sea-going vessels in port approach areas are formulated and discussed. Specific features of these areas, such as traffic density, bathymetry, available manoeuvring space and legal limitations are taken into account. The source and scope of information available to the ship have been analysed. The scope of decision support has been defined. A ship domain has been proposed as a safety criterion. Approach areas leading to the port of Świnoujście have been investigated on the basis of real Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. Vessel movement processes in the chosen area were analysed. Ship domains in various parts of the area were determined. The first results concerning criteria for navigational safety assessment are presented. The conducted studies showed significant differences in the size of domains. A case study was performed on a decision support system operable in the approach area leading to Świnoujście.

In this paper a reasoning algorithm for a creative decision support system is proposed. It allows to integrate inference and machine learning algorithms. Execution of learning algorithm is automatic because it is formalized as aplying a complex inference rule, which generates intrinsically new knowledge using the facts stored already in the knowledge base as training data. This new knowledge may be used in the same inference chain to derive a decision. Such a solution makes the reasoning process more creative and allows to continue resoning in cases when the knowledge base does not have appropriate knowledge explicit encoded. In the paper appropriate knowledge representation and infeence model are proposed. Experimental verification is performed on a decision support system in a casting domain.

This article presents a model of a navigational decision support system on a sea-going vessel. Apart from basic information functions, the system executes tasks typical of decision support systems. Its basic functions and performance are described. Problems of navigational data acquisition and integration as well as navigational situation analysis and assessment are discussed. The system generates solutions of collision situations. Navigators' knowledge is implemented in the system by using artificial intelligence tools and methods. Its key feature is the capability of explaining generated conclusions. The prototype system, built using the presented model, is being tested in real conditions onboard ship.
W artykule przedstawiono model nawigacyjnego systemu wspomagania decyzji na statku morskim. System realizuje obok podstawowych funkcji informacyjnych zadania typowe dla systemów wspomagania decyzji. Przedstawiono główne funkcje systemu oraz ich realizację. Scharakteryzowano zagadnienia akwizycji i integracji danych nawigacyjnych, funkcje analizy i oceny sytuacji nawigacyjnej. System umożliwia generowanie proponowanych rozwiązań sytuacji kolizyjnych. W systemie zaimplementowano wiedzę nawigatorów przy zastosowaniu m.in. metod i narzędzi sztucznej inteligencji. Istotną cechą systemu jest możliwość objaśniania generowanych wniosków. Na podstawie przeprowadzonej analizy modelowanego systemu, opracowano diagramy pakietów, stanowiące agregację elementów modelu. Przedstawiony model struktury systemu stanowił podstawę do opracowania architektury fizycznej. Uwzględniono środowisko funkcjonowania systemu. Stanowią je statkowe urządzenia i systemy nawigacyjne, będące źródłem informacji dla systemu. W systemie wyróżniono trzy moduły - aplikacje działające jednocześnie, realizujące funkcje systemu. Pierwsza z nich odbiera komunikaty z sensorów, a po ich selekcji i integracji przesyła zagregowane dane do drugiej aplikacji - programu zarządzającego. Rezultaty procesów przetwarzania wysyłane są do trzeciej z aplikacji -GUI, której zadaniem jest zobrazowanie sytuacji nawigacyjnej na ekranie monitora oraz komunikacja nawigatora z systemem. Prototyp wykonany na podstawie prezentowanych modeli jest testowany w warunkach rzeczywistych na statku morskim.
