Opis:
This paper focuses on the question of calquing or loan translation. Basic tendencies in the field of borrowing are presented, one of which is to preserve loanwords while the other one to form calques. Various definitions of calquing are included along with the common distinction between semantic and structural calques understood in terms of polysemy and creation of new linguistic entities. Problems with borrowing and calquing are indicated on the basis of traditional classifi cations. The discussion leads to a newer classification which is derived from Carstensen and Busse (1994), i.e. one which leads to the distinction between calques and loan formations. Examples to indicate the accuracy of both categories are derived from computer terminology: both doublett es and various degree of translation. This part is based on a corpus study of text in Gazeta Wyborcza. Two tendencies are identified in this respect: creation of families of new terms and formation of new terms in accordance with the principles followed in earlier terminology. Concurrently, other factors, which lie beyond the realm of contrastive linguistics, are pointed as the reasons for the existing diversity in terminology. They are around the concept of sociolinguistic domains, in accordance with setting and participant framework. One of the reasons for not forming calques can be associated with the etymology of terms which inhibits this process.

Opis:
Fashion, including the ready-to-wear business, is a major sector in the French economy, larger than the car or aerospace industries. Additionally, Paris remains one of the world’s fashion capitals. Yet, the study of the related terminology appears quite restricted in France. This field does not seem considered as a fully-fledged specialty, even though this terminology is part of the daily life of speakers. Apart from lexical borrowings – from English mainly – three recurrent phenomena may cause interlingual and intralingual difficulties, which could be perceived as terminological boundaries: ellipsis, which turns borrowings into pseudo-borrowings, terminology renewal, characterized by creations and disappearances of terms, and semantic shift, characterized by extensions, modifications, and restrictions. After a presentation of the French terminology of the women’s ready-to-wear business, this paper illustrates these phenomena (ellipsis, regular terminology renewal and semantic shift) and their impacts on interlingual and intralingual translation. This illustration is based on a diachronic corpus, covering the period from the 1950s until 2020, compiled from French mail order catalogs.

English influence on Polish
Opis:
One of the common reasons for borrowing is the introduction of new objects or the rise of new cultural, historical, political or social phenomena and the need to name them. The import of loanwords is extremely common in the domain of sports, especially as new disciplines develop, because, as Jarosz (2015) noted, general language is insufficient for dealing with various aspects characteristic of a given discipline, such as actions or equipment. Thus, within sports vocabulary a great deal of newly coined lexemes may be found, which have been categorised by Ożdżyński (1970) as: (i) loanwords, (ii) native neologisms (derivatives and compounds), (iii) semantic neologisms, and (iv) phraseological units. It is believed that the terminology related to various billiard sports depicts the provenance of the discipline. For instance, a Polish pool-billiard (pocket-billiard) player pots balls into a pocket called łuza, which seems to have been borrowed from French, whereas a Polish snooker player pots balls into a pocket called kieszeń, which is a loan translation from English. The aim of the article is to investigate the sports vocabulary used by snooker commentators in order to ascertain the kind of terminology that has been adopted by Polish commentators to cover the meanings related to snooker. As this discipline is relatively young, having been popularised in Poland only at the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, the vocabulary is still developing. Therefore, the choice of spoken language to conduct the analysis gives us a chance to see the most up-to-date state of the lexicon. Attention will be paid to the various types of borrowings in order to see the motivation behind the processes involved in coining particular lexical items. The study has been based on approximately 130 hours of live coverage of the World Snooker Championship 2021.

Opis:
The paper deals with the Polish word raport and the Russian word рапорт that are similar in sounding. The issue of which lexical borrowings in the Russian language should be considered polonisms is being resolved. We start with the review of the word raport dictionary descriptions in Polish lexicographical sources. It shows the  change in the lexical meaning of the studied word over time. In a similar way we analyze the lexicographical description of the Russian word рапорт. The study proposes an analysis of relevant examples from mono-, bi- and polylingual dictionaries. The article presents the results of the corpora data study. The contexts of raport word usage in the National Corpus of Polish and рапорт word in the Russian National Corpus, as well as the ways of these words’ translations from Polish into Russian and from Russian into Polish, are being studied and presented. It is concluded that the polysemantic word (five meanings) in Polish when borrowed to Russian  splits into three words: рапорт (first and second meanings), раппорт (third and fourth meanings) and раппорт (fifth meaning), the last two words with change in graphic appearance, reflecting the original spelling in French. If in Polish the correlation of the first meaning of the lexeme under study with military art disappears with  time, in Russian, on the contrary, it develops.
