How do bilingual children talk about localisation in space? Example of Polish-French young bilinguals The paper analyzes the data collected during recorded interviews with Polish-French bilingual children living in Poland, aged from 4 to 8. The task given to the participants was to describe spatial situations in a series of images by answering the researcher’s question where is X? The answers were supposed to follow the BLC (Basic Locative Construction) pattern. Given locative constructions were then transcribed in CHAT format and analysed in order to find out what types of mistakes appear in children’s locative utterances and if those mistakes might be related to the children’s age, level of proficiency in French or to their bilingualism.

Research on the representation of emotion in human memory has focused on the ways in which words that label an emotion (e.g., love, joy) or represent emotional components (e.g., death, butterfly) are learned, stored, and retrieved from memory. The current work reviews the ways in which these types of words have been distinguished from concrete and abstract words, the types of methodologies used to distinguish among word groups, and the ways in which these words are automatically processed in the bilingual speaker. While emotion words may be more readily processed and retrieved when they appear in the first language, other word types that are neutral with regards to arousal and valence may be processed similarly across languages. The current work also illustrates the ways in which this knowledge is important in advancing theories of language and cognition, attention, perception, and mental health. Future directions are discussed that elucidate the further applications of these interesting lines of research.

Opis:
Cognitive performance declines with age following different trajectories. The cognitive trade-off, however, between age and cognitive reserve is still not clear. In addition, bilingualism has been thought to play a role in delaying cognitive decline by affecting cognitive control outside the scope of language. However, the effect has been unreliably reproduced and without exploring sufficiently the differences between cognitive functions that govern language control. In the current study 112 adults varying in age, level of bilingualism and cognitive reserve, completed a modified version of the Simon task, which engaged the mechanisms of interference suppression and shifting. Using ex-Gaussian analysis, the Simon effect was replicated in the normal component and the shifting effect was found in the exponential. Additional linear mixed-effects model analysis showed a significant “negative” effect of bilingualism on inhibition and a “positive” effect of cognitive reserve on shifting, both independent of age. Age affected similarly the speed of engagement of both executive functions irrespectively of language or cognitive background. Implications of a bilingual disadvantage and a beneficial effect of cognitive reserve during ageing are discussed.

This text presents the survey carried out among parents on the issue of speech development in their children raised in the environment of Polish–Swedish bilingualism in Sweden and convictions about the role of a speech-language pathologist in bilingual upbringing. The aim of this study is to fill the gap in speech-language pathology research on the parental perception of bilingualism in their children. Thematic analysis, a method applied in speech-language pathology abroad, was employed to obtain the results. The selected themes and the accompanying notions were characterised by diversity and multi-sidedness, which permits the conclusion on the holistic need to consider the subject of Polish–Swedish bilingualism in children.

The aim of the article is to show the Polish-Brazilian evolution of bilingualism throughout ages. his paper shows different definitions and types of bilingualism, taking into consideration a comparison between the Polish and Portuguese language. Furthermore, I present a review of 150 years of Polish citizens’ history in Brazil. It presents their difficulties and the approach of the Brazilian government from the 19th to the 20th century. The most significant  subject are Polish schools and organizations. Their history shows how the command of Polish and Portuguese changed throughout ages. There were different conditions, affecting the command of languages in the Polish Diaspora, such as the familial approach or access to Polish culture. I also mention which organizations and people had the biggest impact on Polish citizens in Brazil. I also describe the existing attitude to both cultures and languages in Polish communities. Apart from that, I try to understand the identity and acquaintance of Polish culture nowadays and show actions as a resultof which Polish language and history are promoted nowadays.

Bilingualism is a topic that is most often discussed in the context of raising and working with children. However, the role that bilingualism plays in adulthood and late adulthood is underestimated in the literature. At this stage of life, some people may develop the first symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases, mainly associated with memory and communication disorders. The article briefly introduces the most common causes of dementia symptoms and then discusses bilingualism in several, closely related aspects. The publication contains information on the impact of bilingualism on delaying the symptoms of dementia and triggers of this phenomenon. The creativity of bilinguals and the unique impact of bilingualism on working memory and executive control are addressed.

Przeprowadzone badania były wielokontekstową analizą dwujęzyczności dziecka, zakończoną diagnozą rosyjskich i polskich podsystemów językowych.
International standards in speech-language pathology provide for different formulas for the diagnosis of multilingual (including bilingual) children. One of them is RIOT (Review, Interaction, Observation, Test), based on the ethnographic study of the patient/client in various contexts, analysis of the collected documentation and testing of linguistic competence. This work is an example of the application of the RIOT formula in the study of a bilingual, Polish-Russian girl B. from Belarus. This allowed for a multi-context analysis of the child’s bilingualism, culminating in a diagnosis of Russian and Polish language subsystems.

Sentential context is believed to have particularly robust effects on the processing of foreign-accented speech (Lev-Ari 2015). However, recent neurolinguistic studies investigating the relation between non-native speech and semantic predictability suggest that anticipation mechanisms are, in fact, hampered during the processing of foreign accents (Romero-Rivas et al. 2016). The current study is an attempt to shed more light on this issue and establish whether the mechanisms responsible for categorical template matching remain active during the processing of non-native speech. The study investigated neural reactions towards high cloze probability template endings (i.e., the endings of fixed phrases selected in a pre-test) and their unexpected counterparts. 120 Polish sentences were recorded by a native Polish speaker and a non-native (L1 Ukrainian) speaker of Polish in order to investigate the reactions towards an easily recognizable foreign accent. The brain activity of 28 monolinguals (L1 Polish) was recorded during the EEG sessions. In native-accented speech, violations of high cloze probability items resulted in a broadly distributed negativity followed by a P600 effect. No comparable effects were observed in the case of foreign-accented speech. These results are compatible with previous findings (Hanulíková et al. 2012; Romero-Rivas et al. 2016) as they confirm that linguistic anticipatory and reanalysis processes are hampered in the case of non-native speech.

The article is an attempt at searching for theoretical basics for effective foreign language learning. The starting point for the considerations is the bilingual model, which is a subordinate and coordinate method of organizing linguistic material of the mother tongue and foreign language. Formation of bilingual (Polish-Russian) mental glossary of a learner is treated as a mental process and effectiveness of its reorganization is based on the concept of the frame. The author’s considerations are illustrated with an analysis of selected teaching resources for teaching Russian as a foreign language to Polish students.

Opis:
This paper provides an overview of linguistic studies of multilingualism. In the beginning of this paper, a brief survey on attitude to the phenomenon of multilingualism and linguistic diversity throughout history is given, which shows that multilingualism has actually been natural to most human societies. Despite this fact, multilingual capacities of individuals and societies had generally been neglected in linguistic studies before the second half of the 20th century, with linguists having investigated mainly individual languages as isolated systems. Sociolinguists and linguistic anthropologists were among first people to have realized the importance of avoiding of monolingual prejudices. With recent increased attention towards this phenomenon, multilingualism is today studied and explored in various linguistic disciplines. A large number of terms and fields of research shows that the study is gradually emerging as a new discipline, although the field would benefit from more common terms. Following the definition and delimitation of the basic terms related to multilingualism, perspective for future research is given.
