    As globalization continues its rapid pace, business managers must have tools and expertise to discover new ways to obtain gains from trade and new ways to reduce the costs of trade. It is necessary to adopt original approaches, capabilities, and strategies to succeed in world markets. Developing international knowledge is the foremost management challenge in the emerging global market place. The aim of this paper is to introduce the ‘Star Analysis’ as a method for applying this knowledge to obtain international competitive advantage. The results have been developed by the research project MSM 6215648904 ‘The Czech Economy in the Process of Integration and Globalisation, and the Development of Agricultural Sector and the Sector of Services under the New Conditions of the Integrated European Market’ of Mendel University in Brno, Faculty of Regional Development and International Studies.

    Opis:
    This paper investigates the possible development of Ukrainian agriculture in terms of creation of a free trade area (FTA) with the European Union. Prospects for export-import relations between Ukraine and the EU as well as the competitiveness of domestic agricultural goods in domestic and foreign markets are analyzed. An economic-mathematical model was used for determining negative and positive consequences of the FTA formation for grain, dairy and meat industries. It is expected that the current positive Ukrainian trade balance in agri-food products will decrease significantly as a result of the trade liberalization. The analysis also shows possible changes in the gross domestic product, trade, level of economic activity, human welfare etc. Suggestions how to avoid the negative effects of the FTA on agricultural markets in Ukraine have been developed.

    Opis:
    This paper presents the possible development scenario of the Polish agricultural sector till 2020. It also assesses the impact of macroeconomic growth, CAP reforms and worldwide policies towards the agriculture on this development. The scenario is build using an extended version of the Global Trade Analysis Project model GTAP which is a computable general equilibrium model of the world economy. The analysis shows that the growth of Polish agri-food sector observed after accession to the European Union will be prolonged in the future and will lead to an increase of agrifood sector incomes. However, it is expected that the positive trade balance in agri-food products will decrease significantly in consequence of the world trade liberalization and the EU policy stimulating biofuels production.

    W pracy przedstawiono wyniki studiów nad dalszym wykorzystywaniem biomasy i innych odnawialnych źródeł energii (OZE) w zaspokajaniu potrzeb energetycznych i żywnościowych w Polsce. Stwierdzono, że należy maksymalizować wykorzystanie wszystkich rodzajów OZE, szczególnie tych które są bardziej opłacalne, nie zanieczyszczają środowiska i są społecznie akceptowane. Przyrost wykorzystania OZE powinien wyprzedzać nieunikniony przyrost potrzeb energetycznych w rozwoju gospodarczym i społecznym Polski. Uznano, że przyszła rola biomasy jest przeceniana w bilansie energetycznym OZE. Biomasa rolnicza jest za droga i niezbędna w dalszym rozwoju produkcji surowców żywnościowych dla kraju i na eksport. Zaspokajanie biomasą przyszłych potrzeb żywnościowych powinno mieć pierwszeństwo przed potrzebami energetycznymi. Ten nośnik energii łatwo zastąpić węglem, gazem czy energią nuklearną. Trzeba rozwijać interdyscyplinarne badania podstawowe i rozwojowe racjonalizujące stosowanie OZE i zwiększające efektywność nośników i odbiorników energii.
    Study results were presented of further using of biomass and other renewable energy sources (RES) in meeting of energetic and food industry needs in Poland. It was stated, that all kinds of RES should be used, in particular these, which are more profitable, do not pollute the environment and are socially acceptable. Increase in RES usage should exceed inevitable growth of energetic needs in industrial and social development of Poland. It was concluded, that future role of biomass is overestimated in energetic balance of RES. Agricultural biomass is too expensive and necessary for further develop-ment of raw food materials production and for country and export. The meeting of future food needs by biomass should be foremost before energetic needs. This kind of energy carrier could be easily replaced by coal, gas or nuclear energy. Interdisciplinary basic and developing research should be ex-plicated, which rationalize the RES usage and increase the effectiveness of energy carriers and receivers.

    Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are handled differently in different countries. Whereas global acreage of GMOs jumped to 134 million hectares in 2009 [Cultivation... 2010], in many European countries opposition to GMOs is still strong, and their acreage is very small. This situation poses a difficult situation for many companies and their corporate social responsibility [CSR] strategies. Against this background, we conducted an online survey of 170 agribusiness firms in order to shed some light on how companies handle the conflict between, on the one hand, the growing use of GMOs worldwide and, on the other, the rejection of GMOs by European consumers. The empirical results show that many agribusiness firms perceive the use of GMOs as a highly relevant management issue that shapes their CSR strategies. All in all, agribusiness firms apply a wide spectrum of CSR activities; furthermore, CSR is considered a top management responsibility. GMOs are of aboveaverage relevance in firms that have been criticized for their attitudes towards and use of GMOs. The empirical results have interesting implications for the management of CSR and legitimacy in the agribusiness sector.
