Opis:
Due to increasing restriction put on compressor based cooling, adsorption cooling has been increasing its popularity. Abovementioned restrictions forces usage of ecological refrigerants, such as water. Additional advantage of adsorption devices is possibility to use low-grade waste heat source or solar energy as the main driving energy instead of electricity. This trend has lead to significant development of adsorption based branch in cooling industry over past 30 years. The paper presents the results of experimental research for an adsorption refrigeration device built of two deposits. Water-silica gel was chosen as the working pair, because this solution allows to work at the lowest drive temperatures. As a result of the experiment, EER coefficients were obtained at the level of 0.57-0.82 and SCP coefficients in the range from 8 to 21 W/kg. The results allow to conclude that adsorption devices can, in many cases compete with compressor solutions.

Opis:
The paper contains the results of studies of natural surface film adsorption kinetics carried out in inland waters and in shallow offshore regions of the Baltic Sea during 2000–01 under calm sea conditions. The novel approach presented here for the adsorption dynamics is based on the mixed kinetic-diffusion model and analyses of the surface pressure-time plots at short (t → 0) and long (t→∞) adsorption time intervals. Values of the effective relative diffusion coefficient Deff/D (= 0.008 − 0.607) and energy barrier for adsorption Ea/RT (= 0.49 − 7.10) agree well with the data reported for model non-ionic surfactant solutions of pre-cmc concentrations. Wind speed is one of the factors affecting the adsorption barrier via the increased surface pressure of the natural film exposed to wind shear stress (∼ U10 2),a nd enters the relation Ea/RT = 1.70U10 1/3.

Opis:
The hydration structure of water molecule adsorption at different coverages of a monolayer on a pyrite (100) surface were simulated using the density functional theory (DFT) method. The results demonstrate that the Fe-O interaction weakens and the adsorption energy per water molecule decreases with increasing water coverage, except at a monolayer coverage of 12/12 (i.e., full coverage). H-S and H-O hydrogen bonds were formed on the nearest surface layer. When large amounts of water molecules adsorb onto the surface, the adsorbed water molecules can be divided into three layers: the layer nearest to the surface, the second nearest to the surface, and the layer farthest from the surface. The thickness of the former two layers is approximately 5.5 Å. The three layers have water densities of 1.12 g/cm3, 1.08 g/cm3, and 0.95 g/cm3, respectively, suggesting that there is a strong interaction between the pyrite surface and water molecules and the influence of surface structure on water adsorption reaches a distance of more than 10 Å. Dynamics simulations suggest that the water molecules close to the mineral surfaces are in an orderly arrangement while those far from the surface are disordered.

Opis:
One of inorganic sorbents used in water treatment technology is activated alumina. It is recommended by the European Commission to remove inorganic impurities, such as arsenic, fluoride, selenium and silicates. The adsorbent is usually applied in a granular form, under flow conditions. It can become absorbent material, increasingly used due to the presence of arsenic beside iron and manganese in groundwater intakes. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of groundwater treatment in the technological system containing adsorption on activated alumina. The experiment was performed on test model CE 581 manufactured by G.U.N.T. Hamburg, in which four treatment stages can be extracted. The first stage is used in a gravel filter of grain size 1–2 mm, in the second sand filter of grain size 0.4–0.8 mm. The third and fourth phase includes two adsorbers. The first adsorber comprises activated alumina (Al,sub>2O3) and the other comprises a granular activated carbon. The study was conducted at different speeds of filtration: 5, 10 and 15 m/h. In the raw water samples and the purified water samples after each treatment step the following parameters were determined: pH, O,sub>2 concentration, electrolytic conductivity, SO42-, concentration, NO3- concentration, PO43- concentration, Cl- concentration, color, turbidity, iron and manganese concentration, CODMn, total hardness, calcium hardness, magnesium hardness, content of dissolved substances. The conducted research indicates that optimum filtration rate for most pollution is 15 m/h. Moreover, the presence of activated alumina has contributed to increasing the efficiency of nitrate (V) and phosphate (V) ions removal.

Opis:
In this study, the effect of medium saline water on the synergistic interaction between diesel and Triton X-100 in the flotation of oxidized coal was investigated. The results showed that the flotation yield of oxidized coal in saline water was higher than that in de-ionized (DI) water due to the promotion of diesel adsorption, which was attributed to the screening of electrostatic repulsion between diesel droplets and coal particles in saline water. Meanwhile, the flotation of oxidized coal could be significantly improved when Triton X-100 was added with diesel as a composite collector, and less Triton X-100 was required in saline water than that in DI water to achieve the same true flotation yield, indicating that saline water could increase the effectiveness of Triton X-100 in improving oxidized coal flotation. A mechanism study revealed that Triton X-100 was able to promote diesel adsorption on oxidized coal through emulsification, thus increasing the surface hydrophobicity of oxidized coal through hydrogen bonding between the headgroups of Triton X-100 and the oxygenated groups on coal surfaces. The non-ionic characteristic of Triton X-100 ensured its capability of enhancing oxidized coal flotation in both DI water and saline water.

The potential of burned water hyacinth (BWH) for phenol adsorption from aqueous solution was studied. Batch kinetic and isotherm studies were carried out under varying experimental conditions of contact time, phenol concentration, adsorbent dosage and pH. The pH at the point of zero charge (pH(PZC)) of the adsorbent was determined by the titration method and the value of 8.8 š 0.2 was obtained. The FTIR of the adsorbent was carried out in order to find the potential adsorption sites for the interaction with phenol molecules. The Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption models were used for the mathematical description of adsorption equilibrium and it was found that the experimental data fitted very well to the Langmuir model. Maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent was found to be 30.49 mg/g. Batch adsorption models, based on the assumption of the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models, were applied to examine the kinetics of the adsorption. The results showed that kinetic data closely followed the pseudo-second-order model.

The adsorbent is zeolite which has adsorption properties, high surface area and pores suitable for water (3Å). Then, the concentration of ammonia, hydrogen sulfide was analyzed using Ammonia Test Kit and Hydrogen Sulphide of Hach Hydrogen Sulfide Test Kit. The materials used in this study were zeolite of Malang (East Java, Indonesia) and shrimp pond water. The best result of NH3 and H2S adsorption obtained at a flow rate of 3 L•min-1. The best adsorption constant value (K) achieved by a flow rate of 3 L•min-1. On the basis of the best value of R2, NH3 and H2S adsorption, it can be classified in the first-order kinetic model with R2 of 0.9763 and a k value of 0.0007 hours-1 with a flow rate of 6 L•min-1. From the data above, it can be calculated that the adsorbent needed in the adsorption of NH3 and H2S in a scale shrimp pond requires 18 kg of Malang zeolite with a column height of 3.62 m of adsorbent, a diameter of 2.07 m, and a column volume of 12.21 m3.

Iron is one of the groundwater contaminants that negatively impact health and the environment. This study is attempted at introducing low cost natural adsorbent for that adsorbs iron from synthetically prepared iron water. Sawdust and barley husks were used as a filter media, either alone or at different mixing ratio of sawdust/barley husks (1:1, 0.5:1, 1:0.5), to study the effect of adsorbent dose on the removal efficiency. Synthetic water of iron was used at different initial concentrations (10, 25, 40, 65, and 80) mg/L to study the effect of initial iron concentration on the removal efficiency. The filtration process was conducted at a surface loading rate of 3 m3/m2.hr. The results showed higher removal efficiency with the increase of iron initial concentration. The results indicated that removal of iron ranged (90–99.34%) for all types of filter media. The best removal was found to be 99.34% at a mixing ratio of 0.5:1 (sawdust/barley husks) at 80 mg/L initial concentration. As a conclusion, Removal of iron was very successfully observed with absorbent materials sawdust and barley husk, which makes the treatment of iron even possible in rural areas and when high concentration of iron is present.

Przedstawiono wyniki badań w skali laboratoryjnej nad skutecznością usuwania jonów arsenu z modelowych roztworów wodnych zawierających As(III) i As(V).
The results of laboratory scale studies were presented on efficacy of arsenic ion removal from model water solutions containing As(III) and As(V). For this purpose, magnesium-aluminium layered double hydroxides (LDHs) prepared by chloride and nitrate-chloride methods were applied. The studies demonstrated that both materials were effective in respect of arsenic(V) removal, whereas differed with regard to arsenic(III) removal. The latter was significantly better removed with the use of LDH received by chloride method. Based on the literature value of magnesium arsenate(V) solubility product it was estimated that at pH about 10 arsenic(V) removal occurred via adsorption and/or precipitation of magnesium arsenate(V). In contrast, arsenic(III) removal resulted solely from adsorption of these ions.

Opis:
Functional polymers are increasingly being used as materials with a range of unique properties. Due to their structure and relatively high flexibility in a synthetic context, they are becoming highly relevant in a variety of applications. One of the numerous examples of the use of functional polymers is water treatment. Using the adsorption phenomenon, it is possible to remove or reduce the amount of harmful organic compounds and heavy metal ions in the water. This review provides information on both the synthesis methods and characterization of functional polymers in terms of their adsorption properties. Among others, this paper presents the results of research on functional polymers carried out by Professor Schroeder's research group. The research was mainly focused on the selective adsorption of dyes and heavy metal ions, which are significant water pollutants. The overall results show that the adsorption of the synthesized polymer materials is high influenced by parameters such as pH, temperature, contact time of the adsorbent with the adsorbate and the initial adsorbate concentration. In the case of the adsorption phenomenon, the Langmuir or Freundlich isotherm turned out to be the most appropriate model for the tested materials, while in the case of kinetic models, the highest R2 coefficient was usually obtained using the pseudo-second-order equation.
