Opis:
In the Podolian Dniester Basin (southwestern Ukraine) the Lower Devonian marine deposits are represented by about 530 m thick continuous sequence of interlaminated carbonate and schale outcrops at several localities. Conodonts occur in most of the carbonate layers of the whole Lochkovian but are not abundant and their ramiform elements are mostly broken or lacking. Therefore, only the pectiniform, Pa elements of twenty five stratigraphically important conodont species occurring in the region are discussed and two new species, Caudicriodus schoenlaubi and Pandorinellina? parva are proposed. The hypothetical phyletic relationships within the main representatives of the icriodontid and spathognathodontid genera, Caudicriodus, Zieglerodina, and Pandorinellina? are traced. Comparison of the previously published and newly obtained data revealed discrepancies in the hitherto used interpretation of some of the conodont taxa and their stratigraphic ranges. Contrary to the earlier reports, Caudicriodus postwoschmidti does not occur in the lower Lochkovian but only in the middle part of the Chortkiv Formation, high above the Monograptus uniformis Zone. Based on new material and verification of the previous determinations, a modified scheme of the Lochkovian conodont zonation in Podolia is proposed. Conodont zones: Caudicriodus hesperius, C. transiens, C. postwoschmidti, C. serus, and ?Caudicriodus steinachensis are distinguished. The zones are correlated with conodont zonations in other regions—Barrandian, Cantabrian Mountains, Pyrenees, and Nevada. Biostratigraphy of the Siluro−Devonian transition and Lochkovian is integrated with the carbon isotope stratigraphy.

Opis:
Zooxanthellate corals in the Badenian (Langhian to lower Serravallian) of western Ukraine occur in different lithofacies, but are most abundant in the upper Badenian coralgal reefs of the Ternopil Beds. The coral assemblage consists of five genera, with two predominant (Tarbellastraea and Porites) and three strongly subordinate (Favia, Heliastraea, Siderastrea). The present study is the first record of Heliastraea defrancei in the Fore-Carpathian Basin. The taxonomic composition of the corals indicates that their development occurred in conditions of some ecological stress, most probably connected with climate (location at the northern limit of coral distribution) and sedimentary environment (possible influx of terrigenous material). The coral assemblage shows similarities to numerous fossil reefs of Miocene age from the Paratethyan and Mediterranean realms.

Opis:
The Early Devonian vertebrates of Podolia in Ukraine are well known thanks to the material of the basal arthrodire placoderm genus Kujdanowiaspis, originally mentioned by Brotzen in 1934. The anatomical fame of Kujdanowiaspis brought by Erik Stensiö almost eclipsed the presence of the acanthothoracid placoderm Palaeacanthapsis vasta in the underlying beds, with the original material of P. vasta being less well preserved and abundant than that of Kujdanowiaspis. Here we describe a newly discovered specimen of the acanthothoracid P. vasta from the Lochkovian of Podolia (Ukraine). The specimen, although incomplete, is very well preserved in three dimensions and allows a thorough description of its external morphology, which is compared to that of Romundina stellina and other well-known Acanthothoraci. A phylogenetic analysis is performed and the acanthothoracid nature of Palaeacanthaspis is confirmed. However, the position of Palaeacanthaspis within the Acanthothoraci remains uncertain, and its resemblance with Romundina could be due to either synapomorphies or symplesiomorphies. Similarities and differences between the two forms are exposed, and lead to the lack of synonymy at the specific level. Generic synonymy is also questioned for the first time but remains equivocal.

Opis:
The fundamental research problem that is the subject of this article is to demonstrate the civilizational affiliation of the Russian Federation and Ukraine. According to the accepted assumption, in Ukraine, counted by many authors as part of the civilization, the core of which is Russia, in recent decades there have been processes leading to its separation and incorporation into the Latin civilization. This is also the goal of the ongoing war. The specific problems concern the characterization of the assumptions of the theory of civilization in terms of the historiosophical concept of Feliks Koneczny and the specific characteristics of Turanian and Latin-type civilizations. Koneczny believed that under the influence of the Asiatic borrowings, Moscow became a representative of the Turanian model of civilization, within which authoritarianism reigns and power is based on fear and violence. It is experienced today by Ukraine struggling not only for sovereignty, but also for belonging to the Latin civilization circle.

Opis:
The irregular distribution of sand injections, traditionally termed “dykes” in the Polish geological literature, within individual Carpathian units and within individual lithofacies were observed during long-lasting field works. Injectites have been observed in the Magura Beds and in the Inoceramian Beds of the Polish and Romanian Carpathians, and in the Central Carpathian Paleogene deposits. However, they are most common in the Oligocene-Miocene Menilite Beds, where they are typical and abundant, particularly in the Skole Unit. Two clastic injectite types were distinguished: sedimentary (S-type) and tectonized (T-type). Based on the occurrence and interpretation of these injectites a new two-stage conceptual model is proposed for the Polish segment of the progressive Oligocene-Miocene Carpathian orogenic belt evolution. Type S clastic injectites are interpreted as having formed in the compressional stage, during foredeep basin migration while depositional slope changes were taking place in the Late Oligocene to Early Miocene. Type T injectites are interpreted as having formed by reactivation of S-type injectites in the last, mainly strike-slip, phases of Carpathian orogenic belt formation.

Opis:
Documented examples of type sections with Pleistocene deposits in southern Poland (Tłumaczów, Branice, Wożuczyn, Tyszowce, Hrubieszów) and southwestern Ukraine (Bojanice, Horokhov, Zhorniv) indicate that loesses of the last glaciation (Vistulian, Valdayan) contain derived marine microfossils of Cretaceous age. The microfossil assemblages studied are richly represented by foraminifers, which are mostly well-preserved, and derived mainly Cretaceous, forms. Suitable Late Cretaceous exposures are nearby, around data shows that these rocks and their debris, and the overlying Pleistocene tills and sands, which are older than the loesses, represent one of the main sources of the loess silt. This fact and the heavy mineral content are evidence of the participation of local material in loess-forming processes in central-eastern Europe. The spatial distribution of the sections studied in relation to the determined sources of loess material indicate that the accumulation of the loesses took place mainly in the presence of western and/or northwestern winds in the lower parts of the atmosphere.

The beginning of the 1990s was a time of geopolitical transformations. The collapse of the Soviet Union led to formation of new states that entered the path of democratization, and Ukraine was not an exception. Despite almost 30 years of independence, Ukraine remains a weak democracy. The reason of that, along with other problems, are peculiarities of political culture of citizens. Notwithstanding, weakness of political culture could be changed into the greatest advantage in the process of maturing of democracy in Ukraine.
Początek lat 90. to czas przemian geopolitycznych.

Opis:
Echinoderms from the Badenian (Middle Miocene) of the Fore-Carpathian Basin of western Ukraine are facies restricted. The Mykolaiv Beds, stratigraphically older, yielded the starfish Astropecten forbesi (complete skeletons), two genera of sand dollars (Parascutella, Parmulechinus), and numerous other echinoids of the genera Psammechinus , Echinocyamus, Spatangus, Hemipatagus, Echinocardium, Clypeaster, Echinolampas, and Conolampas. The stratigraphically younger, calcareous Ternopil Beds yielded Eucidaris (complete coronae, isolated spines), Arbacina , Brissus, and Rhabdobrissus. Sixteen species of echinoids are distinguished and/or commented. A new brissid, Rhabdobrissus tarnopolensis sp. nov., is established. A mass occurrence of some species (Psammechinus dubius and Hemipatagus ocellatus) contrasts with that of mass aggregations (sand dollars and Echinocardium leopolitanum) by dynamic events in selected layers of proximal tempestites. Of special note is the occurrence of very small specimens, interpreted as juveniles (‘babies’) having been swept out of their restricted biotopes (‘nurseries’). Some species hitherto regarded as of Early Miocene age, and the problem of their persistence beyond the Fore-Carpathian Basin and/or migration into that basin during the Middle Miocene transgression are discussed.

Opis:
The huge lithosome of the Middle Miocene (Early Badenian) Mykolaiv Sands, developed at the external margin of the Fore-Carpathian Basin in western Ukraine, is recognized to represent a shallowing-up sequence. Special attention is paid to burrows of the Ghost Crab Ocypode which are pantropical in present-day littoral habitats. In the Stratyn section, burrows of this type become a crucial tool in the interpretation of basin bathymetry, which starts from distal offshore depths, through the foreshore, to the backshore where the Ocypode burrows record a temporary break in sedimentation. Lithification of the sand layers and the Ocypode burrows subsequently progressed in beachrock mode. The Stratyn section demonstrates that the development of submerged shoals and/or emergent parts, throughout the huge mass of the Mykolaiv Sands, is probably responsible for their great variation in thickness in western Ukraine, which has long proved difficult to explain.
