    In this paper, we reflect upon our experiences taking a graduate qualitative methodology course with Dr. William (Billy) Shaffir. We highlight Billy’s approach to ethnographic research and his declaration to “just do it.” Rather than just absorbing theoretical knowledge from the literature, Billy taught us to be wary of the dangers of a prior theorization and how it can distort rather than shed light on empirical investigations. Despite his belief that sociological theory is far too often abstract and removed from real-world contexts, he nevertheless provided us with a latent theoretical commitment to concept formation, modification, and testing in the field that guides our research to this day. We explore Shaffir’s agnostic and at times ironic approach to theory and demonstrate how his specific type of theory-work, derived from Everett Hughes’ and Howard Becker’s interactionist perspective on “people doing things together,” influenced how many of his students study occupations and organizations via sensitizing concepts. Billy managed to get us to think differently about how we theorize in the field and how to cultivate a playful and healthy skeptical attitude towards its application. This type of agnostic-interactionism does not dismiss theory outright, but is always vigilant and mindful of how easy it is for practitioners of theory to slip into obfuscation and reification. We conclude with a Shaffir inspired theory-work that argues for the continuing significance of an agnostic stance towards ethnographic and qualitative inquiry; one that continues to sensitize the researcher to generic social processes through which agency-structure is mediated and accomplished.

    As couples tend to be referred to as “being together,” long-distance partners, who spend most of their time apart and in diff erent spaces, might face a challenge delineating and validating their relationship. Through in-depth interviews with 20 couples in a long-distance relationship, this study explores how long-distance partners linguistically and symbolically mark the boundaries of their relationship, and also transcend any real or perceived gaps between distance and closeness in the process. While they rarely shared a physical space, my participants created joint socio-mental spaces, which enhanced their sense of belonging and helped to expand defi nitions of intimacy and space.

    In the paper, we present the development of symbolic interactionism (SI) in Poland by tracing and discussing its beginnings, as well as the influence the Chicago School had on the reception of SI in Polish sociology. Furthermore, we differentiate between two trends in the development of SI in Poland. One is connected with the early theoretical elaborations of the SI orientation and translations of classical books representing this perspective; another is linked with empirical work underpinned by SI concepts and the grounded theory approach in empirical research and data analysis. Stressing the importance of translations of classical texts of SI in its reception in Poland, we emphasize the role of field research and applications of SI concepts in sociological investigations that we shortly characterize.

    Introduction: By creating a framework composed of such concepts as the self, definition of the situation, meaning, joint action, making indications, and social labelling, symbolic interactionism (SI) provides us with a useful conceptual apparatus for understanding human behavior and analyzing the process of criminogeneity.  Research Aim: Similar to the way that Howard Becker has discussed the social character of deviations using excerpts of interviews that he carried out with marijuana smokers and jazz musicians, I try to show on the basis of interviews with counsellors how we can use methods of rehabilitation drawing from SI to social work and treatment of at-risk and delinquent youth. Method: These findings were based on data drawn from in-depth interviews (semi-structured) with counsellors from day care treatment centres (sociotherapists).Results: The article presents four methods of rehabilitation and social work with at-risk and delinquent youth, which were generated from collected data and from the theory of SI. Conclusion: Probation officers, social workers, counsellors, street workers, sociotherapists are professions that can use the ideas and methods presented in the article in their professional practice.
    Wprowadzenie: Interakcjonizm symboliczny (SI) tworząc ramę teoretyczną złożoną z takich koncepcji jak: „ja”, definicja sytuacji, znaczenie, wspólne działanie, wskazywanie, naznaczanie społeczne dostarcza nam użytecznej aparatury pojęciowej do zrozumienia ludzkiego zachowania oraz prześledzena procesu krymionogenezy. Cel badań: Podobnie jak Howard Becker omówił społeczny charakter dewiacji na podstawie fragmentów wywiadów, które przeprowadził z palaczami marihuany i muzykami jazzowymi, staram się na podstawie wywiadów z wychowawcami pokazać, w jaki sposób możemy metody wychowawcze wygenerowane z SI zastosować do pracy socjalnej i resocjalizacji młodzieży zagrożonej i przestępczej. Metoda badań: Wnioski badawcze wygenerowano z danych pochodzących z wywiadów pogłębionych (częściowo ustrukturyzowanych) z wychowawcami pracującymi w świetlicy  (socjoterapeutami).Wyniki: W artykule omówiono cztery metody resocjalizacji i pracy socjalnej z młodzieżą zagrożoną i przestępczą, które udało się wygenerować na podstawie zebranych danych oraz teorii SI. Wnioski: Kuratorzy sądowi, pracownicy socjalni, wychowawcy, streetworkerzy, socjoterapeuci, to profesje, które mogą skorzystać w swojej praktyce zawodowej z idei i metod przedstawionych w artykule.
