Stalinism in Poland
memory of the Holocaust
documentary historical film
Opis:
The article is devoted to two films by the independent operator, director and producer Arkadiusz Gołębiewski: The Story of the Kowalski Family (Historia Kowalskich), which raises the subject of the Holocaust, and Quarter L (Kwatera Ł), which deals with Stalin’s crimes in Poland. They are interpreted not as historical works, but as films about memory and - in the case of the latter - memory in statu nascendi. Their involvement in political and historical polemics and their relationship to the vision of history supported by the Polish State are analyzed.

Stalinism in Poland
relations between the academia and totalitarian rule
Opis:
This article discusses the relation of the eminent Polish historian Władysław Konopczyński (1880–1952) to the newly established communist rule. As president of the Commission of History of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences, the editor-in-chief of the Polish Biographical Dictionary, and one of the few internationally known Polish historians who survived the war, the old Konopczyński enjoyed much prestige among his colleagues and in the Polish academia in general. For this and the other reasons indicated in the paper, the communist authorities choose him as the symbol of the ‘bourgeois’ scholarship and decided to discredit him and get rid of his person. The paper presents the ways in which the government exercised pressure on the scholar and his colleagues, causing Konopczyński’s resignation from all his posts, and depriving him the opportunities to teach and publish. Finally, the moral and practical results of this campaign on the historian’s collaborators and colleagues are analysed.

Stalinism in Poland
Special Commission for Combating Misappropriation and Economic Sabotage
Opis:
The Special Commission for Combating Misappropriation and Economic Sabotage (1945--1955) worked in the years 1945-1955. It was a typical institution of Polish Stalinism – an extra-constitutional administrative organ with police-prosecutor-judicial powers. A government department “to do anything”. A tool of repression in the hands of the Communist authorities of that time trying to liquidate free market economy and capitalist property as well as any opposition by all means. It played a decisive role in the so-called “battle over trade” (1947--1954), the result of which was an almost complete liquidation of the private industrial-commercial-service sector. The Special Commission imposed punishment for acts that were not crimes or even petty offences. In the scale of the whole country the Special Commission made over 460 thousand judicial decisions condemning the accused and sent more than 84 thousand people to forced labor camps. In 1946-1949 alone 33.322 people were detained in custody pending inquiry on the strength of decisions made by organs of the Special Commission. In the whole period when the Commission was working on the legal level its chairman was Roman Zambrowski vel Nusbaum Rubin.
