This paper deals with the origins, security, history of the Slovak-Ukrainian border, which in 2007 became the part of the Schengen Area. Which can be considered part of the civilizational boundaries, as well as a significant geopolitical phenomenon. We focused on this part of the Schengen border in particular, as it has been through many changes in the last century. These conditions have many impacts on everyday life of inhabitants of border area. We try to approximate the impact of borders through a partial analysis of a questionnaire survey, questions of satisfaction with the place and with life in in border villages. We also pay attention to the border definition and the national border specifically, since we regard it as a significant socio-economical phenomenon, which affects its neighbouring areas.

The term quality of life is difficult to define accurately, because it combines many different aspects, including economic, sociological, psychological and even these belonging to political science. Reflections on the quality of life appeared somewhere half of the twentieth century and are associated with attempts to realize the idea of so-called welfare economics, calling for the achievement of such economic development of the country in which the welfare state might occur. And then came the idea that quality of life is determined by the Gross Domestic Product index. But when discussing this issue, it turned out that one must also consider the Human Development Index, indicating the perspectives of other disciplines on this issue. So, the quality of life combines among other satisfaction of life, which is determined by many other factors.

Artykuł ma charakter badawczy, a jego celem jest charakterystyka wybranych subiektywnych i egocentrycznych wyznaczników jakości życia, analizowanej w kategoriach przestrzennych i czasowych. Artykuł przygotowano na podstawie wyników badań ankietowych. Odpowiedzi dotyczące subiektywnej jakości życia wskazują, że respondenci są w zdecydowanej większości zadowoleni z całokształtu swojego życia i to oni mają zasadniczy wpływ na jakość swojego życia. Przeprowadzona analiza skupień pozwoliła na wyodrębnienie trzech grup respondentów różniących się między sobą opinią na temat tego, kto powinien mieć porównywalną do badanych lub lepszą jakość życia (rodzina, znajomi, przyjaciele, wszyscy mieszkańcy). Kolejne analizy pozwoliły na stwierdzenie różnic w hierarchii wartości poszczególnych grup.
The article is of a research nature and its main purpose is to characterize selected subjective and egocentric determinants of quality of life analyzed both from the point of view of overall satisfaction of life as well as the various perception of quality of life in spatial and temporal terms. The article is based on the results of a survey. Responses concerning subjective quality of life indicate that the residents of the studied regions are in their vast majority satisfied with the whole of their lives. The respondents believe that they themselves have a major impact on the quality of their lives. The conducted cluster analysis allowed for distinguishing of three groups of respondents who differed in their opinion on who should have a quality of life comparable or better than that of the respondents (family, friends, friends, all residents). Subsequent analyzes allowed to identify differences in the hierarchy of values of particular groups.

Introduction: Rectal cancer is one of the most common malignancies in developed countries. However, despite the increasingly better preoperative diagnostics, adaptation of surgical techniques to the location and advancement of the tumor, the combination of surgical treatment with neoadjuvant therapy and adjuvant treatment, standardized control tests, Poland still has not obtained satisfactory results regarding long-term survival. In addition, the effects of the therapy often differ significantly from those expected by patients and the doctors treating them. Aim of the study: To evaluate the effects of rectal cancer treatment among patients of the General and Oncological Surgery Clinic of the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin. The impact of numerous factors on postoperative quality of life was analyzed. Material and methods: Between 2007 - 2015, 263 radical resection procedures were performed in patients with diagnosed rectal cancer. Retrospectively, based on medical records, a database was created covering a range of clinical data. Information about death dates of some patients was obtained at the Registry Office in Szczecin. A survey supplementing clinical data and standardized quality of life assessment forms (EORTC QLQ - C30 and CR29) were sent to 120 living patients. A telephone conversation was carried out with some patients who did not respond to the surveys. Finally, data from 90 people was collected, which represents 75% of the patients enrolled in the study. Patients quality of life was assessed using EORTC questionnaire evaluation guides. Results: The patients quality of life worsened the most as a result of anorectal dysfunction. Incontinence of gases and stool, urgency and difficulty in defecation were demonstrated primarily in patients undergoing low rectal resection and irradiation. Patients undergoing radiotherapy, as a result of persistent low anterior resection syndrome, were forced to partially or completely withdraw from professional activity and to limit the pursuit of their interests. Their contacts with family, friends and acquaintances have also deteriorated. The presence of the intestinal stoma significantly affected the deterioration of the reception of the body's own image. However, no relation was found between the existence of the fistula and other aspects of the patients everyday life, including functioning in life and social roles. Conclusions: Due to the acceptable postoperative quality of life of patients with fistula and numerous imperfections of sphincter preserving techniques, operations resulting in terminal ostomy should not be considered as an extremity, and in the case of tumors of the lower rectum with unaffected sphincters, they should be considered as alternative methods for low anterior resection.

An increase of obesity and overweight rates represents a major problems for individuals and social policies in developed countries. Obese individuals face stigmatization, health problems and discrimination, have lower chances for employment of higher positions and lower incomes. There are many reasons to believe that the quality of their life is relatively lower. In the study Body Mass Index was used as a measure of weight, and: happiness, life satisfaction and depression - as measures of quality of life. The study of adult Poles provides evidences overweight and obese individuals are not less happy or satisfied with their life than others.

Purpose: We assessed the quality of life of children with motor disabilities in comparison with healthy children, as evaluated by their parents, using the CHQ-PF28 questionnaire (Child Health Questionnaire—Parent Form). Materials and methods: In a prospective study, we evaluated the quality of life of 105 children with motor disabilities. Results: Our research showed lower quality of life in the group of children with motor disabilities compared with controls, both in terms of physical and psychosocial health. Significant correlations between independent walking and physical functioning, general behavior, and mental health of children suffering from motor disabilities were found. According to the average indices of quality of life of children suffering from motor disabilities, depending on sex, the greatest differences occurred in behavior and change of health status, while the smallest differences in self-esteem and parental involvement, compared with controls. In the case of healthy children, the largest differences appeared in the perception of pain, behavior, and self-esteem; whereas, the smallest variations occurred in the change of health status and physical activity. Conclusion: Children suffering from motor disabilities demonstrate lower quality of life compared with healthy children.

Parkinson’s disease can lead to disability and reduce the quality of life of its patients. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the quality of life of a group of people with Parkinson’s disease. The clinical and progressive characteristics of the disease, its motor and neuropsychological impact were evaluated in each Parkinsonian subject included in the study. A quality of life assessment was performed and collected from 60 Parkinsonian patients followed and hospitalized at Hassan II University Hospital in Fez. Different instruments were used, the Hoenh and Yahr scale and the Parkinson’s disease questionnaire (PDQ-39) UPDRS engine, MMS, clinical fact sheet. According to our results, through the different tests and scale of evaluation, we observed an impaired quality of life in the areas of physical discomfort, cognitive disorder, activity of daily living, mobility, and emotional well-being, especially in patients with duration of evolution more than 5 years. There was no significant difference between the two sexes. In addition, the severity of the disease tended to give the impression of an impaired quality of life with respect to the dimensions of activities of daily living and cognition, which is relevant to improving the quality of life patient life and clinical interventions.

Introduction: Radiotherapy (RT) for patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) affects vital functions related to the irradiation volume of the head and neck region and, in addition, has a negative impact on social functioning, thereby significantly impairing patients’ quality of life (QoL). Aim: The aim of this study was to assess changes in the quality of life in patients with head and neck cancer treated with curative RT at 12 months after completion of RT. The aim of this study was to assess the differences between the baseline QoL of patients with early clinical stage HNSCC and at 12 months after curative/radical RT. Material and methods: The prospective clinical study included 92 patients in good general condition (ECOG 0–1 – Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status), without regional or distant metastases, diagnosed with pathomorphologically confirmed early-stage head and neck squamous cell carcinoma treated with definitive RT. All patients participating in the study signed an informed consent form. QoL was assessed using the standard EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQH&N35 questionnaires. In addition, information on clinical aspects and data relating to socio-demographic factors were obtained from each patient. Statistical analysis was performed using a statistical package (SPSS 17.0). T-test was used for dependent and independent samples. A general linear model was used for repeated measures. Results: Patients’ QoL deteriorated significantly after definitive RT. Worse QoL Core-30 scores in patients 12 months after the end of RT, compared with baseline QoL, before the start of RT, were observed in domains such as physical performance, fulfillment of life roles, cognitive functioning, loss of appetite, fatigue and constipation. For the QLQ-H&N35 questionnaires, patients 12 months after the end of RT reported problems in relation to aspects of life such as senses, mouth opening, dry mouth, thick saliva, pain, and weight loss. Conclusion: RT, even in early clinical stage head and neck cancer, has a negative impact on QoL, despite modern treatment techniques.

The paper focuses on searching for relationships and conditions of the seniors’ status in Slovakia in the context of transformation processes that had significantly weakened their social securities, their meaning of the life and had them shifted into “surviving“. The solution seems to be intergenerational solidarity, using their social capital as a part of own life experiences’ capitalisation process. The standard of living in the EU, achieved health and social standards including the rights to a dignified and full-fledged seniors’ life, are one of basic human rights and its observance should be a legal and moral duty of every democratic country. The authors offer the results of empirical research on the quality of seniors’ life in conditions of Slovak conditions in comparison with the Pan-European area.

The article presents the importance of research on quality of life, the general concept of this category and criteria for the classification of generating important typologies quality of life, the description of which is the core content of the article. The article is development of the ideas and proposals put forward in earlier publications of the author. The added value of this work lies primarily in identifying two tendencies in discussions on the terminology of life quality and derived concepts. An attempt was made to determine the general concept of life quality, taking into account the proposed definition of axiological ground. Also typology classification criteria of quality were grouped for those that are disclosed axiology and those with hidden axiology. The study also presents some problems with measuring the quality of life within particular its classifications. (original abstract)

If we want to make sure wewill find qualified and effective help in a time of need, it is important to have quality social services which correspond withreal needs of their recipiens. Appropriate instrument for providing quality services are standards of quality of socialservices. Entering the third millenium, Slovakia started to talk about quality of social services, managing the quality and standardization. There have been established new systems of managing the quality in practice. Significant milestone in providing socialsservices in Slovakia is Act No. 448/2008 Coll. on social services. It discusses requirements about the quality, which should be respected by providers of social services about control of the quality about conditions of providing socialservices and about criterias of evaluation. Therefore, the question on the spot is whether standard social services are properly developed by their providers and how their implementation in practice reflects on satisfaction of recipients, namely the quality of their life. Quality of life can be understood as difference between expectations and what one actually accomplishes in life. The small erthedifference, the better the quality of life.

Poprawa jakości życia oraz ograniczenie nadmiernych różnic w jakości życia różnych grup ludności (w układzie społecznym i przestrzennym), w tym eliminowanie wykluczenia społecznego i ubóstwa, stanowi podstawowy cel współczesnych koncepcji rozwoju społeczno-ekonomicznego (Szukiełojć-Bieńkuńska, Walczak, 2011). In recent years, priority for public statistics is to improve the methods of measurement and analysis of various aspects of sustainable socio-economic development. The high rank in terms of monitoring sustainable development is the measurement of life quality. The article presents the CSO 's general concept of life quality survey. It includes the previously completed research and analysis as well as proposals for the development of this research issues for the coming years. Adopted by the CSO concept of measuring the life quality refers both to the Polish tradition of research in this area, as well as international recommendations. This concept takes into account the multifaceted nature of the category of life quality and increasing importance of subjective measures. It was considered that in the measurement of quality of life CSO will seek to take into account the widest possible range of information on all domains adopted by the European Statistical System, including the Polish specifics. Celem artykułu była identyfikacja i analiza zależności pomiędzy jakością pracy a jakością życia. Przedstawiono istotę i sens jakości pracy. Następnie zaprezentowano sposób ujmowania jakości życia. Dokonano analizy zależności występujących między jakością pracy a jakością życia. Stwierdzono, iż jakość pracy jest istotną determinantą jakości życia społeczeństwa. Ponadto zaprezentowano odczucia pracowników branży tartacznej co do jakości ich życia w odniesieniu do jakości pracy.
The aim of the article was to identify and analyze the correlation between the quality of work and quality of life. The essence and meaning of the quality of work was presented. Furthermore, the article presented how to recognize the quality of life. An analysis was based on correlation between the quality of work and the quality of life. It was stated that the quality of work is an important determinant of the quality of life of society. Moreover, the article presented sawmilling industry employees feeling about the quality of their lives in relation to the quality of work.
