Opis:
The siliciclastic rocks of the Paprotnia Beds from the Bardo Unit (Polish Sudetes) provide abundant and diverse palynological material. The miospore assemblages recovered allow distinction of two miospore biozones. The Tripartites vetustus–Rotaspora fracta (VF) Biozone was recognized in the lower and the middle parts of the section. In its upper part the Cingulizonates capistratus (Cc) Subbiozone, the lower part of the Cingulizonates capistratus–Bellispores nitidus (CN) Biozone was distinguished. These results indicate that the rocks of the Paprotnia section, considered earlier on the basis of biostratigraphic and radiometric data as upper Asbian, should be assigned to the upper Asbian and Brigantian. The location of the Asbian/Brigantian boundary and the possible occurrence of a gap in the Brigantian part of the section are discussed. Palynofacies observations of miospore preservation and frequency provided additional information, which confirm the gradual shallowing of the environment of deposition from offshore to onshore. Thermal maturity assessment of organic matter, based on miospore colour, indicates early mature and mature stages of organic matter thermal alteration.

Bovine neonatal pancytopenia (BNP), a newly emerged syndrome of discussed etiology in calves, has been diagnosed since 2006. Here we describe first cases of BNP in Poland. Between September 2008 and April 2011, 62 cases of BNP were diagnosed in dairy calves. Bleeding skin lesions were mostly pronounced in summer and early autumn. Severe thrombocytopenia was observed in all sick animals. All calves came from herds vaccinated against BVDV infection with PregSure BVD vaccine (Pfizer). Substitution of colostrum from dams of BNP positive calves with colostrum from dams from herds free of BNP was the only effective measure to avoid new cases in affected herds.

Opis:
The paper presents results of geobotanical and taxonomic studies on the distribution and habitat requirements of Nymphaea candida in southern Poland. The researches were conducted in southern Poland in 2003-2009, in the provinces of Lower Silesia, Lublin, Małopolska, Opole, Silesian province as well as, in southern parts of Mazowieckie and Lubuskie. Flowers, leaves and fruits of Nymphaea species were collected from 27 locations. Altogether pollens from 73 populations of N. candida and 18 of N. alba from all the researched area were measured. The trophic level of an ecosystem was evaluated according to the results of the total nitrogen, total phosphorus, chlorophyll a, transparency and biological parameters. As the result of the studies of more than 200 water bodies, 57 localities of N. candida were documented within the investigation area. The populations of N. candida occupy mid-forest water bodies and river ox-bow lakes. A significant number of populations was also found in artificial reservoirs - fish ponds. The most suitable habitat conditions for N. candida occur in shallow waters in the shore zone with the amplitude of the water column vary from 0.5 to 2 m. Regarding the trophy level, N. candida occupies different habitats, mainly mesotrophic and also eutrophic with high content of organic matters. Considering the 15 checked morphological parameters, especially the stigma diameter, the number of carpellary teeth, flower and pollen diameters, the found and collected specimens of N. candida significantly differ from N. alba. The study confirms that N. candida ocurrs in whole lowland Poland without any regional distribution gaps. According to the IUCN guidelines to species assessment the data gathered during the presented study do not allow to classify N. candida as a vulnerable species in Poland. Still existing populations for more than 150 years, numerous stable locations, abundant populations, a habitat accessibility, a biotope extent, an ecological amplitude against the trophy level and direct human impacts suggest, that the species should be regarded as a least concern (LC) taxon.

Opis:
Celem pracy była ocena zawartości metali ciężkich (Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) i siarki w korzeniach i liściach buraków cukrowych uprawianych na Dolnym Śląsku. Stosowano metody używane w Stacjach Chemiczno-Rolniczych. Ogółem wykonano oznaczenia chemiczne w 95 próbkach korzeni i w 82 próbkach liści. Zawartość metali ciężkich i siarki w korzeniach buraków cukrowych uprawianych na Dolnym Śląsku była wyraźnie zróżnicowana i na ogół wyższa niż przeciętnie w kraju. Najwięcej Ni, Pb, Mn i S zawierały korzenie w podregionie jeleniogórsko-wałbrzyskim, Cu, Zn i Fe w legnickim, a Cd i Cr w podregionie wrocławskim.
The aim of this work was to estimate the contents of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Zn) and sulphur in roots and leaves of sugar beet grown in Lower Silesia. The methods applied were those generally used by Agro-Chemical Stations. Chemical analyses included in total 95 root samples and 82 leaf samples. The concentration of heavy metals and sulphur in beet roots grown in Lower Silesia was markedly differentiated and generally higher than average in the country. The largest amounts of Ni, Pb, Mn and S contained the roots in the Jelenia Góra-Wałbrzych subregion, Cu, Zn and Fe in the Legnica, Cd and Cr in Wrocław subregions. Determined concentrations of heavy metals and sulphur in roots did not exceed obligatory standards, and thus they were fully suitable for processing and fodder. The content of heavy metals and sulphur in leaves of sugar beet was markedly higher than in roots. In the Lower Silesia province on average 45% leaves were unfit for fodder because the heavy metals and sulphur contents exceeded the norms. Largest number of samples contaminated with those elements were found in the Jelenia Góra-Wałbrzych subregion (70%), while the lowest in the Legnica subregion (19%). Sugar beet roots in the province were contaminated with the excess of cadmium (49%), sulphur (26%), zinc (15%) and sporadically with the excess of nickel, copper and lead.

Opis:
Woody plants grown near the roads are force-fed by salt and this has negative effect on their growth and decorative value. The aim of the presented study was to investigate the effects of salinity on growth and nutrient composition of four trees species often planted along the roads and streets in Poland. Two years old seedlings (bare root) of four tree species: Acer negundo, A. platanoides, Quercus robur and Tilia cordata were potted and grown outside under four soil salinity levels maintained by drenching plants with tap water containing 0.25, 0.5, 1.5, and 3.3g NaCl/L H2O. Plant height, soil samples for electrical conductivity (EC) and pH determination as well as leaf samples for macroelements (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) content evaluation were collected after each growing season of two years of experiment. Electrical conductivity of the growing medium varied insignificantly between species, but salt concentration in the growing medium was distinctly higher in the upper than in the bottom part. Soil salinity had strong but variable effect on plant growth during the experiment. Only Acer negundo growth was not affected even by the highest concentration of NaCl solution. With increasing salinity of growing medium more Na+ was taken by all species but the biggest amount of sodium ions was accumulated in the leaves of Tilia cordata, while the lowest in Acer negundo. Than potassium ions content decreased with increasing medium salinity only in the leaves of Quercus robur and Tilia cordata. In the leaves of Acer platanoides and Tilia cordata calcium concentration was decreased at increased salinity, in two other tested species amount of Ca2+ in the leaves was elevated. The main conclusion that can be drown is that Acer negundo is highly tolerant to salinity stress while Acer platanoides was the most sensitive among tested species.

Opis:
This article is the first of two papers on the remote sensing methods of monitoring the Baltic ecosystem, developed by a Polish team. The main aim of the five- year SatBałtyk (2010–2014) research project (Satellite Monitoring of the Baltic Sea Environment) is to prepare the technical infrastructure and set in motion operational procedures for the satellite monitoring of the Baltic environment. This system is to characterize on a routine basis the structural and functional properties of this sea on the basis of data supplied by the relevant satellites. The characterization and large-scale dissemination of the following properties of the Baltic is anticipated: the solar radiation influx to the sea’s waters in various spectral intervals, energy balances of the short- and long-wave radiation at the Baltic Sea surface and in the upper layers of the atmosphere over the Baltic, sea surface temperature distribution, dynamic states of the water surface, concentrations of chlorophyll a and other phytoplankton pigments in the Baltic water, distributions of algal blooms, the occurrence of upwelling events, and the characteristics of primary organic matter production and photosynthetically released oxygen in the water. It is also intended to develop and, where feasible, to implement satellite techniques for detecting slicks of petroleum derivatives and other compounds, evaluating the state of the sea’s ice cover, and forecasting the hazards from current and future storms and providing evidence of their effects in the Baltic coastal zone. The ultimate objective of the project is to implement an operational system for the routine determination and dissemination on the Internet of the above-mentioned features of the Baltic in the form of distribution maps as well as plots, tables and descriptions characterizing the state of the various elements of the Baltic environment. The main sources of input data for this system will be the results of systematic recording by environmental satellites and also special-purpose ones such as TIROS N/NOAA, MSG (currently Meteosat 9), EOS/AQUA and ENVISAT. The final effects of the SatBałtyk project are to be achieved by the end of 2014, i.e. during a period of 60 months. These two papers present the results obtained during the first 15 months of the project. Part 1 of this series of articles contains the assumptions, objectives and a description of the most important stages in the history of our research, which constitute the foundation of the current project. It also discusses the way in which SatBałtyk functions and the scheme of its overall operations system. The second article (Part 2), will discuss some aspects of its practical applicability in the satellite monitoring of the Baltic ecosystem (see Woźniak et al. (2011) in this issue).

Opis:
This paper is the second part of the description of the first stage of the SatBałtyk project’s implementation. Part 1 (Woźniak et al. 2011, in this issue) presents the assumptions and objectives of SatBałtyk and describes the most important stages in the history of our research, which is the foundation of this project. It also discusses the operation and general structure of the SatBałtyk system. Part 2 addresses various aspects of the practical applicability of the SatBałtyk Operational System to Baltic ecosystem monitoring. Examples are given of the Baltic’s characteristics estimated using the preliminary versions of the algorithms in this Operational System. At the current stage of research, these algorithms apply mainly to the characteristics of the solar energy influx and the distribution of this energy among the various processes taking place in the atmosphere-sea system, and also to the radiation balance of the sea surface, the irradiance conditions for photosynthesis and the condition of plant communities in the water, sea surface temperature distributions and some other marine phenomena correlated with this temperature. Monitoring results obtained with these preliminary algorithms are exemplified in the form of distribution maps of selected abiotic parameters of the Baltic, as well as structural and functional characteristics of this ecosystem governed by these parameters in the Baltic’s many basins. The maps cover practically the whole area of the Baltic Sea. Also given are results of preliminary inspections of the accuracy of the magnitudes shown on the maps. In actual fact, the errors of these estimates are relatively small. The further practical application of this set of algorithms (to be gradually made more specific) is therefore entirely justified as the basis of the SatBałtyk system for the effective operational monitoring of the state and functioning of Baltic ecosystems. This article also outlines the plans for extending SatBałtyk to include the recording of the effects and hazards caused by current and expected storm events in the Polish coastal zone.
