Opis:
In this study the activity of uranium isotopes 234U and 238U in Odra river water samples, collected from October 2003 to July 2004, was measured using alpha spectrometry. The uranium concentrations were different in each of the seasons analysed; the lowest values were recorded in summer. In all seasons, uranium concentrations were the highest in Bystrzyca river waters (from 27.81±0.29 Bq m−3 of 234U and 17.82±0.23 Bq m−3 of 238U in spring to 194.76±3.43 Bq m−3 of 234U and 134.88 ± 2.85 Bq m−3 of 238U in summer). The lowest concentrations were noted in the Mała Panew (from 1.33±0.02 Bq m−3 of 234U and 1.06±0.02 Bq m−3 of 238U in spring to 3.52 ± 0.05 Bq m−3 of 234U and 2.59 ± 0.04 Bq m−3 of 238U in autumn). The uranium radionuclides 234U and 238U in the water samples were not in radioactive equilibrium. The 234U/238U activity ratios were the highest in Odra water samples collected at Głogów (1.84 in autumn), and the lowest in water from the Noteć (1.03 in winter and spring). The 234U/238U activity ratio decreases along the main stream of the Odra, owing to changes in the salinity of the river’s waters. Annually, 8.19 tons of uranium (126.29 GBq of 234U and 100.80 GBq of 238U) flow into the Szczecin Lagoon with Odra river waters.

Opis:
Archival topographic maps are the main source of information about the land cover and land use (LULC) structure, particularly with reference to times before the application of aerial and satellite remote sensing. Maps created in different periods differ substantially in regard to cartographic technique, scale and generalisation level. This brings problems of using them as a data source in landscape transformation analysis. If these problems are not correctly solved in the initial stage of the research, the obtained land use/cover change (LULCC) results may be biased by errors leading to incorrect conclusions. For the interpretation of landscape transformation in the aspect of ecological processes, a simple comparison of proportions of particular LULC classes in certain periods is not sufficient, because a given transformation type in one place might be compensated by an opposite change in another place. Thus, in order to investigate the actual LULCC dynamics, and thereby to get to know its influence on vegetation, biodiversity and other landscape elements, it is necessary to use methods allowing for a detailed analysis of changes between LULC classes in the given period. One of the most straightforward approaches is a transformation matrix. In order to apply a transformation matrix to cartographic materials from different times, they need to be rectified to a common coordinate system. Because of deformations of the topographic map contents due to the map scale, map projection, cartographic and print technique, the possible distortions during storage and utilization, as well as during the digital scanning of the map, different for each map series or even between single sheets of the same map series, a perfect georectification of a scanned topographic map is virtually impossible. Therefore, the transformation matrix contains the information about the factual transitions between LULC categories, as well as about the artificial ones, due to map rectification error. Spatial error assessment procedure is then necessary to extract the information about the real transformation that took place. In this paper a method for reducing the impact of rectification error on the LULCC analysis is presented, based on authors landscape transformation research, conducted in the agricultural landscape of the Odra valley, using digitized maps from 1930's-1940's and 1990's.

Opis:
The present experiments were earned out pn the soilrf of the Rybocice polder near Swiecko, which was purposefully flooded with waters of the Odra river during the summer flood of' 1977 that causet complete destruction of crops and meadow sward. The flooded areas remained under water for more than 30 days. The dominant soils found in this area are river alluvial soils (Fluvi- sols) of varying texture. Rceause of their location and poorly operating drainage system, the discussed soils are periodically too wet by nature or water-logged. In the spring (March/April) of 1998 the ground water table occurred at the depth of 30 cm on damaged grasslands and at 90 cm on some arable Holds. The content of organic carbon ranged from 0.7 to 3.2% in horizon A with depth of approximately 30 cm. Soil reaction was found to vary considerably - from pH (KCI) 4.2 to pH 7.6. Long purposeful inundation with flood waters was not found to have caused significant negative effects on chemical properties of the examined soils. No noticeable contamination with heavy metals (Pb„ Cu, Zn, Cd, Cr and Mn) or polieyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) was observed. Bulk density in this region, without any treatment from the period of flooding to the spring of 1998 was approximately 1.60 Mg/m3 as compared with 1.40 Mg/m3 on the field cultivated (ploughed) in spring and sown with spring cereal. The mean crop yield in 1998, when appropriate agro-techniques were applied, did not vary significantly from the long-term averages.

Opis:
The study was carried out in the main branches of the Lower Oder River, differentiated in terms of sediments composition. The aim was performing a comparative studies on the differences in Ostracoda fauna inhabiting various types of sediments. Following bottom sediments were distinguished: hard, sapropel/hard, sapropel and Chironomidae mat. The packet of CANOCO v.4.5 programs was used to investigate the interdependence between the species composition and environmental parameters. Eighteen taxa were found of which 16 were identified to the species level. It was a comparatively high number considering the fact that the samples were collected exclusively from the benthic zone and solely from the main river bed, without floodplain. Physocypria kraepelini was an eudominant and Darwinula stevensoni and Cypria ophtalmica were dominants. The samples collected from the sapropel were characterised by the highest density. The case of hard sediments the status of domination was retained as above, but there appeared a new dominant, i.e. Potamocypris unicaudata . The most unique structure of domination was observed in the case of Chironomidae mat, with Limnocythere inopinata as an eudominant and Cypridopsis vidua and P. unicaudata as dominants. As for the species diversity, the hard sediments were characterised by the highest value of Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index, the sapropel/hard sediment was the lowest. The type of river bottom to a great extent affects the density and taxonomic composition of the Ostracoda in rivers. The waters of the Oder River, rich in oxygen, provide favourable conditions for the development of ostracods even on the surface of sapropel sediment.

Opis:
In the paper were presented the results of study for determination of natural (polonium 210Po, uranium 234U and 238U) and artificial (plutonium 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Pu) alpha radionuclides in aquatic environment of Poland and southern Baltic Sea as well as the recognition of their accumulation in marine trophic chain. The obtained results indicated that Vistula and Odra as well as Rega, Parsęta and Słupia are important sources of analyzed radionuclides in southern Baltic Sea. Total annual runoff of polonium, uranium and plutonium from Vistula, Odra and Pomeranian rivers to the Baltic Sea was calculated as about 95 GBq of 210Po, 750 GBq of 234+238U and 160 MBq of 238+239+240Pu. Investigation on the polonium 210Po, uranium 234U and 238U, as well as and plutonium 238Pu, 239+240Pu and 241Pu. concentration in Baltic biota revealed that these radionuclides, especially polonium and plutonium, are strongly accumulated by some species. The results indicate that the Baltic organisms accumulate polonium and plutonium from environment and the bioconcentration factors (BCF) range from 25 to 27 000. The Baltic Sea algae, benthic animals and fish concentrate uranium only to a small degree. In Baltic sediments, the concentration of uranium increases with core depth and it is connected with the diffusion of 234U, 235U and 238U from sediments via intersticial water to bottom water. The values of 234U/238U activity ratio in the sediments indicated that the possible reduction process of U(VI) to U(IV) and the removing of autogenic uranium from seawater to sediments in the Gdańsk Deep and Bornholm Deep constitutes a small part only.
Analiza wartości stosunku aktywności 234U/238U w osadach wykazała, że możliwa redukcja U(VI) do U(IV) i usuwanie autogenicznego uranu z wody morskiej do osadów w redukcyjnych rejonach Bałtyku: Głębi Gdańskiej i Głębi Bornholmskiej zachodzi w niewielkim stopniu.

Opis:
Dreissena polymorpha inhabits about 46.5% of the bottom area in Lake Dabie. It is most abundant in the northern part of the lake and sporadically occurs in its southern part. The average density of the zebra mussel is 891 individuals/m², while its wet weight is 1374 g/ m². In the settled areas the density of the zebra mussel reaches 1734 individuals/ m². There were presently established 7 age-groups from 0 to 6+. The highest number of specimens occurred in the age-groups between 1+ and 3+, while the lowest number - in the groups 0, 5 and 6+. Strong eutrophication and pollution of Lake Dabie on its southern side, combined with sedimentation of the extensive amounts of seston carried in by the Płonia and Regalica rivers, do not create favourable conditions for development of Dreissena. D. polymorpha plays a very positive role in the lake ecosystem through its biofiltrating action, contributing thus to an increase of water clarity and to limitation of phytoplankton development through cumulating nutrients in its biomass. Electrophoretic analysis of 9 enzymatic loci revealed strong polymorphism of the studied population of the zebra mussel: percent of polymorphic loci - 100, mean number of alleles in locus – 3.4, coefficient of expected heterozygosity per locus in the population, HS - 0.335, percentage of separate genotypes - 69%, in this number unique genotypes - 58%. A very strong scattering of the alleles was stated within the entire population. In each aggregation, on average, 90% of the specimens have a separate genotype. Each of the five defined groups of D. polymorpha, representing profiles I-V, respectively, had similar genetic composition. The values of the genetic similarity among the studied groups of the zebra mussel ranged from 0.96 to 0.99.

Badaniami objęto 17 gatunków mięczaków słodkowodnych, z czego dla 14 gatunków oznaczono koncentracje metali ciężkich (Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cd i Hg) w tkankach miękkich, a dla 16 gatunków oznaczono stężenia tych pierwiastków chemicznych w muszlach. Łącznie dysponowano wynikami analiz koncentracji metali w 110 próbkach tkanek miękkich i w 119 próbkach muszli. Gatunkami, których tkanki miękkie i muszle najlepiej reagują na zmiany koncentracji metali ciężkich w wodzie i osadach dennych, okazały się: Anodonta anatina, Dreissena polymorpha, Lymnaea stagnalis, Pseudoanodonta complanata i Viviparus contectus. Drugą grupę, odzwierciedlającą w mniejszym stopniu poziomy metali w środowisku, stanowią cztery gatunki: Viviparus viviparus, Sphaerium solidum, Unio pictorum oraz Unio tumidus. Gatunkami najlepiej odzwierciedlającymi poziomy metali w środowisku w poszczególnych układach środowiskowych są: (1) tkanki - woda: Viviparus contectus, Anodonta anatina oraz Viviparus viviparus, (2) tkanki - osady: Anodonta anatina, Pseudoanodonta complanata i Viviparus contectus, (3) muszle - woda: Dreissena polymorpha, Unio pictorum i Lymnaea stagnalis, (4) muszle - osady: Viviparus viviparus, Dreissena polymorpha i Sphaerium solidum. Są to: Sphaerium rivicola, Sphaerium solidum, Unio crassus, Pseudoanodonta complanata oraz Anodonta cygnea.
The research was applied to 17 species of freshwater molluscs, for 14 species the concentration of heavy metals (Cu, Zn, Pb, Co, Cd and Hg) was marked in soft tissues, and for 16 species the concentration of these metals was marked in shells. This study is based on the analysis of 110 samples of soft tissues and 119 samples of shells. The species that best react to the changes in concentration of the heavy metals in water and sediments are: Anodonta anatina, Dreissena polymorpha, Lymnaea stagnalis, Pseudoanodonta complanata and Viviparus contectus. The second group, which is less related with the environment, are four species: Viviparus viviparus, Sphaerium solidum, Unio pictorum and Unio tumidus. The species most related with the environment in individual arrangements are: (1) tissues - water: Viviparus contectus, Anodonta anatina and Viviparus viviparus, (2) tissues - sediments: Anodonta anatina, Pseudoanodonta complanata and Viviparus contectus, (3) shells - water: Dreissena polymorpha, Unio pictorum and Lymnaea stagnalis, (4) shells - sediments: Viviparus viviparus, Dreissena polymorpha i Sphaerium solidum. In the surface water we can control all six analyzed metals through the shell analysis of Dreissena polymorpha, and in the bottom sediments we can control the concentration of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd i Hg by soft tissues analysis and Co by shell analysis of Anodonta anatina. These two species are crucial for the future research. Two other species are considered as supplementary. Those are: Lymnaea stagnalis (in water we can control the concentration of Cu, Zn, Pb, Cd by shell analysis, and in sediments we can control Cu, Pb, Cd by shell analysis and Zn by soft tissue analysis), Viviparus contectus (in water we can control the concentration of Cu, Co, Cd by tissues analysis and Pb by shell analysis, and in sediments we can control Cu, Zn, Co i Cd by tissues analysis). In the future research one should resig from using five species that are under protection in Poland since 2001. Those are: Sphaerium rivicola, Sphaerium solidum, Unio crassus, Pseudoanodonta complanata and Anodonta cygnea.
