Opis:
Finite Element Method is one of the most frequently used computational schemes in numerical analyses. A contact phenomenon is an essential issue when modelling the physical interaction between two or more bodies. Depending on the used software, the various contact algorithms are applied. In the paper, the authors present the results of evaluation of different contact methods implemented in LS-Dyna CAE software. The most common problem arising during contact modelling is the occurrence of penetration between the coupling elements, which leads to an increase of contact forces and, consequently, a local deformation of finite elements. In the introduction, a theoretical background related to mathematical aspects of contact modelling is presented, in particular search methods for contact surfaces and the penalty forces calculating method. Subsequently, a contact analysis for different variants of interaction of the elements is presented. In the first analysed case, shaft- sleeve interaction, in both rotation and translation, is presented. The variable factors in this case were a number of interacting finite elements and the type of a contact algorithm. The second case focused on the interaction forces resulting from the interaction between two sliding bodies in the harmonic motion. A sliding body was pressed against the plane using an increasing force. A variable factor in this case was the type of the implemented contact algorithm.

Opis:
The article presents simulation results of a bird strike with a helicopter windshield of small helicopter category. It turns out that there are no certification requirements regarding windshield of this category. Therefore Agusta A109 helicopter as a representing this helicopter category has been chosen for researcher. The simulations were conducted on the basis of LS-DYNA software by means of the SPH method for bird model shape of cylinder with hemispherical endings for the speed of Vc = 285 km/h. The analyses regarded various angles of the bird model impact into windshield. As a result of the simulations, comparative analyses in the aspect of time curves of the kinetic energy, velocity, and windshield deformation were achieved. The analysis shows that at smaller angles of attack, the bird’s model has a higher speed at the moment of impact, and thus greater kinetic energy, because it did not lose speed as a result of the collision. In addition, the deflection of the windshield is smaller. In some cases, the deflection of the windshield may be observed, which indicates the elastic response of the system. In case of impact in the normal direction to the surface of the glass, the bird’s model practically pierces it. The use of a thicker pane translates into less deformation of the pane, but causes its destruction at the connection point with the helicopter carrier structure.

Opis:
High accident index in Poland, including one of the highest death rates in EU, forces undertaking the intense works in order to improve traffic safety. Published road accident statistics indicate that the most dangerous accidents include a vehicle collision with a tree, post or other road object. The road safety barriers make the road infrastructure elements that can signiflcantly protect against that type of accidents. The work presents basie tasks and requirements imposed on the barriers. Problems related to a proper selection of the barriers have been also highlighted. The tools facilitating the barrier design include numerical modelling. The modelling has been done by means of the LS-DYNA software, using the finite element method. A general structure and a developed barrier model as well as vehicle model have been presented. The conditions of the numerical tests have been also specifled. The work presents the results of influence of car impact angle with a rigid safety barrier. Presented results refer to a car o f mas s of 900 kg, making a bas is for the tests of the limiting systems for several limiting levels: including normal limit N2 (according to EN 1317-2). Compared to standard requirements, the scope of numerical tests has been extended by other car impact angle values. The work presents vehicle trajectories and deformations of their bodies. It also includes examples of velocities and acceleration courses and acceleration severity indexes (ASI) calculated on their basis. Obtained results indicate that the barrier location angle has a high influence on the safety level ofthe car passengers as well as on the car motion trajectory after collision

The work presents the traffic safety issue related to a use of the road protective barriers. It describes a purpose and tasks that should be fulfilled by the safety system. Conditions of crash tests and their evaluation according to the requirements of the existing standard documents are also presented. The purpose of the work was to evaluate the influence of applied barrier type on the car collision process. A barrier composed of the segments that can move on the ground due to the impact force and a barrier fixed to the road surface were assumed for the model tests. The modelling was carried out by means of the LS-DYNA sofrware, using the finite element method. The tests were performed for two types of cars, mass of 900 kg and 1500 kg. The work includes the numerical test results, deformations of car bodies and barrier displacement. Examples of velocities and acceleration courses of selected vehicle elements and the ASI index, calculated on their basis, used for evaluation of the passenger danger level were also presented. Obtained results indicate a significant influence of the barrier installation method (joint with the road) on the collision process course and dynamic loads affecting the car passengers. They also indicate directions of safety improvement.

This article presents works associated with the design, numerical analyses and experimental tests of an energyabsorbing mat designed for increasing the safety of the soldiers inside military vehicles, especially their legs. One of the most important branches of engineering interests is high technologies accompanying the safety of soldiers. Energy absorbing mats are one of an additional equipment of a military vehicle, which is directly targeted to increase leg safety during explosion of IED (Improvised Explosive Device) under vehicle. The presented invention allows protection legs of the crew’s feet resting on the floor of the vehicle during explosion of a mine or IED. In most solutions, crewmembers’ foot rests directly on the floor, causing serious injuries. The value of the load on the metatarsus and tibia is closely related to the overall vehicle structure, which generally has limitations in the use of available external and internal protection solutions. Energy absorbing mats are a universal solution because they are adaptable to any type of vehicle. Their role is particularly important in flat-bottomed armoured vehicles. The article will show the results of the analysis showing how the mat works. Experimental results will be compared with the results of numerical analysis. The analysis is conducted using the LS-DYNA explicit code.

The main aim of this study is to carry out dynamic simulations of structural response of reinforced concrete bridge loaded with a moving heavy vehicle. Computational dynamics analysis was conducted using LS-DYNA computer code. The selected bridge was a reinforced-concrete structure located on the U.S. 90 in Northwest Florida. The bridge has six prestressed AASHTO type III beams and concrete deck. An 8-axle vehicle including a tractor unit and a low bed trailer were selected as a representative for the study. FE model of the tractor based on previous studies; however, a FE model of the trailer was developed for the present work. Analyses included passages of a vehicle with 47 tonnes cargo. A cargo resting on a trailer was taken into account by changing the material density of selected components in the semi-trailer FE model. Time histories of the bridge deflections in the middle of the span were recorded during the simulation tests. Simulations were performed for the vehicle velocity between 20 and 50 mph, stepped by 5 mph. An influence of the velocity on the bridge deflection was determined. The main objective of the simulation tests on the selected bridge was to assess the actual dynamic load allowance (DLA), also known as impact factor, based on the maximum deflection of the bridge span as a function of the vehicle velocity.

Opis:
The Warsaw Institute of Aviation major role in the RASTAS Spear project was to design an energy absorption system for the space probe lander. As the system was meant to be unmanned, the main requirement was to use no active solutions like parachute or rocket propulsion (less complexity in application and thus more reliability). A group of various materials was chosen to be tested. Tests campaign was divided into three stages: static compression tests, low speed dynamic tests and high speed dynamic tests. The high-speed dynamic tests were divided into two substages. In the first one simple cube specimens were tested to obtain data necessary for second substage in which full-scale object was tested. Having valuable data from experiments, numerical simulations in LS-DYNA software were carried out and then the results were compared. Based on experimental data several iterations during finite element model developing process were made. That process allowed setting up properly simulation by changing and adjusting properties such: material models, contact types, element formulation and other important constants. The finite element simulation results showed a good correlation with experimental data. The knowledge gained from numerical model optimization in connection with experimental data allowed for creating faster and more accurate energy absorbing material selection methodology. This methodology was successfully used in subsequent projects in which Institute of Aviation took part and also can be used in other future applications.

The paper evaluates the effectiveness of the innovative road safety system equipped with prototype component segments composed of a body made of a plastic filled with reinforced concrete. Main advantages of the new safety barrier include increased resistance to corrosion as well as easy transport and assembly directly on a road section being secured. Model tests were performed on a car of 900 kg weight allowing for carrying out the TB11 tests according to the EN 1317-2 standard. LS-DYNA software was applied for modelling, using the finite element method. The work presents the numerical test results, trajectory of vehicle movement after collision as well as the concrete barrier displacement. It also includes examples of stress in steel bars and joint coupling. Detailed assessing of simulation test results were made on the basis of ASI, THIV and PHD index. They were calculated on the basis of velocity and acceleration courses of selected car bodywork points. Numerical test results confirm the fact that this system meets the normative requirements. They allow for qualifying that system for B impact severity level and W4 working width. The results presented in the paper make the initial stage of the study and further calculations will be oriented towards a possibility of meeting the requirements for higher restraint levels.

The most important task in tests of resistance of aircraft structures to the terrorist threats is to determine the sensitivity of thin-walled structures to the blast wave load. For obvious reasons, full-scale experimental investigations are carried out exceptionally. In such cases numerical analyses are very important. They allow tuning modelparameters for proper correlation with experimental data. With this preliminary analysis experiment can be planned properly. The paper presents a summary of the results of numerical analysis of model of medium sizefuselage. Various manufacturing techniques are considered - the skin made of aluminum alloy (2024-T3) and the skins made of modern layered materials (GLARE) were compared. Characteristics of the materials used in FE simulations were obtained experimentally. Modelling of C4 detonation was also discussed. Studies have shown very strong sensitivity of the results to chosen numerical models of materials, formulations of elements, assumed parameters etc. Studies confirm also very strong necessity of the correlation of analysis results with experimental data. Without such a correlation it is difficult to talk about the validation of the results obtained from the "explicit" codes.
