    The article attempts to argue that Tuwim’s personality and work can be explained by looking into his early childhood and writing. It is definitely the period inadequately explored by critics. The author discusses key moments in the poet’s biography and most crucial elements of his work, paying particular attention to controversies triggered by some texts and themes in his writing. The article also focuses on the analysis of conflicts that Tuwim suffered from in his life. Tuwim’s strategy of provocation is also taken under scrutiny. The article presents Tuwim’s poetry as a lasting contribution to Polish literature and as a body of work which manages to resist ideological readings.

    The author analyses Tuwim’s "Bambo, the Black Boy" and tries to point to a number of interpretative paradoxes that have accumulated around its multiple readings. Particular attention is paid to the racial readings of the poem. What is more, the author discusses a variety of contemporary contexts in which the famous poem functions; these are often politically incorrect readings and interpretations which make no sense of the historical context in which the work was originally written. The article offers a detailed analysis of the origins of the poem and the circumstances in which found its way to the school primer. The poem is seen as expressing the need for accepting otherness and fighting cultural stereotypes.

    The reception of Polish literature in Lithuania is a complex phenomenon. For a long time there was a dominant trend of expanding the area of Lithuanian literature by incorporating into it some of the Polish-language authors who maintained contacts with Lithuania. As a result, the horizons of national literature naturally broadened. However, the reception of Julian Tuwim’s writing belongs to a different category. It needs to be remembered that in the Soviet period Polish literature offered Lithuanian intellectuals a passage to the outside world. It was in the work of western poets, Tuwim’s work included, that Lithuanian authors sought ways of expanding their avant-garde forms and dictions. Tuwim’s poetry has been largely read in its original, Polish version; therefore, there are few books collecting his poems. However, the influence of Tuwim’s work is recognized by some experts in translations of his work. However, Tuwim was made publicly known in Lithuania thanks an argument over the naming one of the street in Vilnius after his name. The article analysis public reactions to this argument and shows how this non-literary event made Tuwim a public figure in the country.

    Julian Tuwim (1894-1953) był rimbaudystą na różne sposoby: czytał Jeana Arthura Rimbauda (1854-1891) i tłumaczył jego wiersze; znał je na pamięć i recytował; wielbił francuskiego poetę – odwiedził jego grób w Charleville z pękiem czerwonych róż, uważał go za największego poetę świata. Najciekawiej, być może, przyswajał i przemycał Rimbauda we własnej twórczości, na wszystkich jej poziomach. Tuwima i Rimbauda łączy to, co można by nazwać dziecięcością wyobraźni (poetyckiej), obydwaj są łobuzami literatury, twórcza dezynwoltura spokrewnia ich w wielu miejscach. Obydwaj anarchizują na wysokim poziomie artystycznym.
    Julian Tuwim (1894-1953) was a studier of Rimbaud in numerous ways: he read Jean Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) and translated his poems. He knew his poetry by heart and recited it. He worshiped the French poet and he visited his grave in Charleville and left him a bunch of red roses. He considered Rimbaud the greatest poet of all. Tuwim, probably, in the most interesting fashion assimilated and smuggled Rimbaud into his own poetry, at all its levels. Tuwim and Rimbaud are connected by what might be called the childishness of the poetic imagination. Both of them are literary rogues who are characterised by their creative disinvolture.Both of them advocate anarchy at a high artistic level.
