The new trench Z−17 situated in the Dębnik anticline (Cracow Region, southern Poland) exposed strata representing the Frasnian–Famennian boundary interval. The latest Frasnian crisis interval is characterized by the fauna of Ryocarhynchus tumidus interval consisting of the nominal species, Barroisella campbelli, Biernatella polonica, and representives of Lingulipora, Athyris, ?Retichonetes, Longispina, Cyrtospirifer and Warrenella. The first brachiopods that appears immediately above the F–F boundary in the survival interval include the unidentified rhipidomellid, Praewaagenoconcha cf. speciosa, and Pampoecilorhynchus geniculatus sp. nov. The fauna in the succeeding layer is dominated by P. geniculatus and Cyrtospirifer minor. The earliest Famennian repopulation assemblage consists of representatives of Barroisella, ?Rhyssochonetes, Praewaagenoconcha, Nigerinoplica, Schizophoria, unidentified rhipidomellid, Pampoecilorhynchus geniculatus sp. nov., Chapinella striata sp. nov., Crinisarina angelicoides, and Cyrtospirifer minor. Low diversity and low frequency brachiopod assemblages consisting of stunted specimens characterize the succeeding brachiopod intervals spanning the remainder of the Palmatolepis triangularis Zone. Basinal dysoxia prevailed in the region for the duration of Pa. triangularis Zone. Resumption of aerobic bottom−water conditions is marked by the appearance of brachiopods of the Dmitria gibbosa interval (Pa. crepida Zone). Resumption of favorable environmental conditions during the recovery interval is marked by an increase in brachiopod diversity recording the beginning of a strong post−extinction rediversification of the fauna.

The last representatives of the order Atrypida on the southern flank of the Dinant Synclinorium (Vaulx-Nismes area) in Belgium belong to Costatrypa, Spinatrypa, Spinatrypina (?Spinatrypina), Spinatrypina (Exatrypa), Iowatrypa, ?Waiotrypa, Desquamatia (Desquamatia) and Desquamatia (?Seratrypa). Among the thirteen described taxa, five are new: Spinatrypa tumuli sp. n., Iowatrypa circuitionis sp. n., ?Waiotrypa pluvia sp. n., Desquamatia (Desquamatia) quieta sp. n. and Desquamatia (?Seratrypa) derelicta sp. n. Supposed lissatrypid 'Glassia drevermanni' Maillieux, 1936 from the late Frasnian Matagne shales is assigned to the Rhynchonellida. On the southern flank of the Dinant Synclinorium and in the Philippeville Massif, the Atrypida become extinct in the Palmatolepis rhenana Zone, significantly below the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary. Their extinction coincides with the first appearance of the green and black shales of the late Frasnian Matagne Formation, recording a transgressive-hypoxic event. Based on conodont data, this event takes place earlier on the southern flank of the Dinant Synclinorium than in the Philippeville Massif.

The cyrtospiriferids are among the most important fossils in the Frasnian strata of the East European Platform (EEP). During the Early Frasnian (Palmatolepis falsiovalis Zone) the numerous and morphologically distinct Uchtospiriferinae, accompanied by very scarce Cyrtospiriferinae, are known from South Timan. The mass appearance of cyrtospiriferins on the platform at the beginning of the Middle Frasnian is linked with significant sea−level rise of Devonian Transgression−Regression (T−R) cycle IIc. At that interval these brachiopods attain their highest diversity of the entire Frasnian. The Early Frasnian type species of the genus Uchtospirifer is here revised, and subfamily Uchtospiriferinae re−established. Cyrtospirifer schelonicus, C. rudkinensis, C. mylaensis sp. nov., and C. tenticulum are described from the Middle Frasnian of NW and central regions of EEP and Middle Timan.

A new atrypid genus Heckerella from early Frasnian (Palmatolepis transitans Zone) of northwestern East European Platform is proposed. It includes only Heckerella heckeri, originally referred to Anatrypa. The new genus is characterised by weakly paraplicate anterior commissure, well-developed carina on the ventral valve, sulcus on the dorsal valve and coarser radial ornament. Heckerella has restricted geographic distribution in northwestern Russia, Latvia, northeastern Lithuania where it forms high-density associations with Pseudoatrypa velikaya.
Poważne zmiany ekosystemowe we wczesnym franie spowodowały spadek zróżnicowania taksonomicznego wśród atrypidów, ale przedstawiciele tej grupy pozostali do końca franu ważnym składnikem niektórych zespołów płytkowodnych ramienionogów. Opisany w niniejszej pracy nowy rodzaj Heckerella należy do ostatnich przedstawicieli rządu Atrypida. Jedyny znany gatunek tego rodzaju, H. heckeri (Nalivkin, 1941) pochodzi z wczesnego franu (poziom Palmatolepis transitans) późnocno-zachodnich rejonów Platformy Wschodnioeuropejskiej i pierwotnie został zaliczony do rodzaju Anatrypa Nalivkin, 1939. Od tego ostatniego rodzaju Heckerella gen. n. różni się słabo wyrażoną komisurą typu "paraplicate", dobrze rozwiniętą kariną na skorupce nóżkowej i grubymi żebrami. Nowy rodzaj, chociaż podobny do późnofrańskiej Gibberosatrypa Markovskii & Rzonsnitskaya, 1998, różni się od niej bardziej wyciągniętym (wydłużonym) brzegiem zawiasowym, obecnośocią wyraźniejszej ośrodkowej zatoki na skorupce grzbietowej i wąskimi, wysokimi żebrami.

In South China latest Frasnian (Palmatolepis linguiformis Zone) the representatives of the order Atrypida (Brachiopoda) are most common in central Hunan Province. They are relatively rare in other parts of South China due to unfavourable ecologic conditions. Unlike most previously reported sections, including some sections in South China, the four Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary sections examined here do not show any evidence for black shale. Atrypids are abundant and relatively diverse about 15 to 20 m below the F-F boundary (six species), and very rare about 1-2 m below the boundary (with only two species). It seems that the disappearance of most atrypids occurred well before the F-F boundary. Nine species (including Iowatrypa? qidongensis sp. n.), assigned to six genera, are discussed and described.

The brachiopod fauna of the Middle-Late Devonian cratonic carbonate platform deposits of the Iowa Basin, central North America, contains twenty species of the order Atrypida, some of which are types for widespread genera common in Middle and Late Devonian faunas. The latest Givetian-early Frasnian deposits yield a diverse fauna consisting of ten species (two new) included in Desquamatia (Independatrypa), D. (Seratrypa), Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa) and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa). Many of these forms occur in, or are closely similar to species known from, coeval faunas of central and western Canada. Middle Frasnian deposits of northern Iowa contain two species included in Spinatrypa (S.) and Pseudoatrypa, both of which are new. Late Frasnian strata of the Iowa Basin yield eight species included in Costatrypa, Iowatrypa, Pseudoatrypa, and Spinatrypa (Spinatrypa), some of which are widespread in other subtropical and tropical faunas of the western US and western Canada. The taxa Pseudoatrypa witzkei sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) bunkeri sp. n., Spinatrypa (S.) thompsoni sp. n., and Spinatrypina (Exatrypa) johnsoni sp. n. are proposed. Pseudoatrypa? sp. from the very late Frasnian of southern New Mexico is also illustrated.

The first appearance of the brachiopod Cyrtospirifer and related forms in the Late Devonian of South China significantly postdates the beginning of the Frasnian and the entry of the group in other parts of the world. Scattered data from different sections suggest that its first entry, associated with the emergence of other plicate spiriferids, such as theodossid and conispiriferid brachiopods, was late in the Middle Frasnian. At the same time, many rhynchonellids disappeared or became extinct locally in South China. This brachiopod faunal overturn near the Palmatolepis punctata–Early Pa. hassi zonal boundary is the most significant event in the Early–Middle Frasnian of South China, characterized by about a 35% loss of existing species and the flourishing of the plicate spiriferids, which was coeval with the end of a major biogeochemical perturbation recently recognized in the Pa. punctata Zone. By contrast, atrypid brachiopods do not seem to show any significant diversity change. The brachiopod faunal change was probably related to a (local?) transgressive event in South China, which also brought new pelagic faunas northwards into some intra−shelf deeper water areas, such as the Shetianqiao area in central Hunan Province. Fifteen brachiopod species are described and illustrated, which include some taxa that are first recorded or recognized in South China, e.g., the spiriferid Pyramidaspirifer, which is now known from both North America and South China. One new species, Desquamatia qiziqiaoensis, is erected.

An earliest Famennian (Late Devonian) shell bed was discovered in the Hanover Shale Member of the Java Formation 1.4 meters above the Frasnian–Famennian (F–F) boundary in western New York. The invertebrate shelly fauna of the shell bed (Lower Palmatolepis triangularis conodont Zone), provides information on taxonomy of an outer shelf benthic association during the survival interval of recovery in the Appalachian foreland basin soon after the terminal Upper Kellwasser event marking the F–F mass extinction. Shelly invertebrates are extremely rare in the upper Hanover immediately above and below the shell bed. Abundance of brachiopod valves and remains of other groups in the shell bed reach 80–100 valves/100 cm2. Elongate valves of the linguloid brachiopod Barroisella cf. B. campbelli have preferred alignments roughly parallel to direction of down−slope flow in the deep−water foreland basin depositional setting. The brachiopod fauna is dominated by the representatives of Retichonetes, Barroisella, Cyrtospirifer, Tylothyris, and Praewaagenoconcha. Rare elements include species of Thiemella, Schizophoria, Ripidiorhynchus?, Chapinella?, an indeterminate rhynchonellid, Ambocoelia, and extremely rare Orbiculoidea. Forms including Cyrtospirifer hornellensis, Tylothyris mesacostalis, Praewaagenoconcha speciosa, and few others are late Frasnian carryovers. The range inception of Thiemella leonensis is just above the F–F boundary (Upper Kellwasser horizon) in the upper Hanover Shale shell bed in the western Appalachian foreland basin.

The rhynchonellid species, Pammegetherhynchus kowalaensis sp. n., occurs in the late Frasnian (Early to Late Palmatolepis rhenana, and possibly early Palmatolepis linguiformis conodont zones) marly-bituminous succession at Kowala (various outcrops) in the Gałęzice Syncline, south of Kielce in the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland. The only other known species of this genus is the type species, Pammegetherhynchus merodae Sartenaer, 1977, from the late Frasnian (somewhere in the Early and Late Palmatolepis rhenana Zones) of the French Fagne (dark shales of 'Matagne' aspect), and, probably, of the Eifel ('Büdesheimer Goniatitenschiefer'). P. kowalaensis sp. n. occurred in level-bottom pioneer assemblages, thriving in reef downslope, mostly poorly-oxygenated habitats of the Kellwasser interval. The species finally disappeared near the Frasnian-Famennian boundary. The genus Pammegetherhynchus seems to be particularly suited to stressed deep-water shelf environments in the European part of the Laurussian shelf, widely distributed in this crisis time.

Diverse atrypid brachiopod faunas characterize very late Givetian-early Frasnian deposits of Devonian Transgressive-Regressive (T-R) cycle IIb in North America which feature species of Desquamatia (Seratrypa), Desquamatia (Independatrypa), Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, Spinatrypina (S.), S. (Exatrypa), Spinatrypa (S.), Davidsonia, and possibly Iowatrypa Middle Frasnian faunas are not well documented in much of North America. Middle Frasnian deposits of T-R cycle IIc in the Great Basin, Iowa, and the southern Northwest Territories and Mackenzie shelf feature species of Neatrypa, Pseudoatrypa, Radiatrypa, D. (Seratrypa), Spinatrypa, and possibly Costatrypa. Radiatrypa does not carry over into late Frasnian rocks of T-R cycle IId in North America. Genera common to late Frasnian deposits of T-R cycle IId-1 in central and western North America include widespread species of Pseudoatrypa, Spinatrypa, Costatrypa, Iowatrypa. D. (Seratrypa) and Neatrypa were restricted to the tropical platforms of western Canada at that time. Very late Frasnian brachiopod faunas of T-R cycle IId-2 yield species of Pseudoatrypa, Spinatrypa, Iowatrypa, and Pseudoatrypa? (southwest US only). Available data on Late Frasnian brachiopod records in North American subtropical platforms (New Mexico and Iowa) indicate that two successive stepped late Frasnian extinction events affected those faunas, coinciding with the Lower Kellwasser Event and the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) Event. Over half of the atrypid genera represented in late Frasnian North American faunas survived the first wave of extinctions (Lower Kellwasser Event). The surviving species, recorded in very late Frasnian deposits of Devonian T-R cycle IId-2, became extinct during the final crisis associated with the F-F Event.

We present taxonomic revision of rugose corals and brachiopods from several Frasnian–Fammenian (F–F) boundary sections in central Hunan Province, China. Diversity of shallow−water rugose corals gradually increased during the Frasnian, but ended with sudden extinction near the end of Frasnian. Ostracods were abundant during the Frasnian; their extinction coincided with anoxic deposition of the end−Frasnian black shale deposits. The early Famennian ostracod fauna is of low diversity. The brachiopod fauna of the late Frasnian (Palmatolepis rhenana and Pa. linguiformis zones) is dominated by atrypids, small−sized cyrtospiriferids, and the rhynchonellid Hunanotoechia. All atrypids disappeared before the F–F boundary with highest rates of extinction below the boundary (probably low in the Pa. linguiformis Zone). The Frasnian cyrtospiriferid fauna is also of low diversity and dominated by small taxa. All but one of the cyrtospiriferid taxa crossed the F–F boundary. The early Famennian post−extinction recovery brachiopod fauna was the result of rapid radiation of new forms shortly after the terminal Frasnian event. The early Famennian fauna is characterized by diverse cyrtospiriferids, abundant Yunnanellina and productoids. Above the early recovery fauna another fauna was recovered, with brachiopods Hunanospirifer and Yunnanella and is correlated with the late or latest Pa. crepida Zone. Sinalosia rugosa gen. et sp. nov. (Productida) is erected.

Late Frasnian Atrypida (Brachiopoda) from the South Urals, South Timan and Kuznetsk Basin in Russia (east Laurussian and south Siberian shelf domains in Devonian time) reveal significant generic and specific diversity in the broadly defined Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) bio-crisis time. Eighteen species of atrypid brachiopods have been recorded, representing 4 subfamilies and 10 genera. The new genus Gibberosatrypa Markovskii & Rzhonsnitskaya, and the new subgenus Spinatrypa (Plicspinatrypa) Rzhonsnitskaya are proposed. Four new species Spinatrypina (Spinatrypina) sosnovkiensis Yudina, Spinatrypa (Plicspinatrypa) rossica Rzhonsnitskaya, Iowatrypa nalivkini Rzhonsnitskaya & Sokiran, and Cartnatina(?) biohermica Yudina are described. The representatives of the Variatrypinae (including especially common Desquamatia (Desquamatia) alticoliformis), Spinatrypinae (Spinatrypina) and Atypinae (Pseudoatrypa, ?Costatrypa) are widely distributed in the studied regions. The Pseudogruenewaldtiinae are represented by Iowatrypa and Pseudogruenewaldtia, of which the first is distributed worldwide, whereas the only undoubted species of the second is restricted to South Timan, and probably represents a localized latest Frasnian descendant of Iowatrypa. The decline phase of atrypid development was controlled by a variety of environmental factors tied to the global Kellwasser events, although it was not directly triggered by anoxic conditions. The investigated atrypid brachiopods, which were all confined to lower latitudes, disappeared during the F-F mass extinction, independently of their environmental and biogeographic settings.

Opis:
Late Frasnian Atrypida (Brachiopoda) from the Holy Cross Mountains, Poland, include 15 taxa and were widely distributed in foreslope habitats of the declining Dyminy Reef complex. The Palmatolepis semichatovae transgression, followed by the transgressive/hypoxic Lower Kellwasser (KW) Event during the Palmatolepis rhenana Zone did not have catastrophic effects for atrypid faunas, but were rather associated with the appearance of a new species group comprising Iowatrypa, Waiotrypa, Costatrypa, Spinatrypina, Desquamatia and Radiatrypa. Stepdown demise of the biota started during the inter-KW regression, and culminated as a result of increasing stress during the Upper Kellwasser Event in the late Palmatolepis linguiformis Zone, mainly due to catastrophic sea level changes and anoxia, possibly linked to oceanic thermal changes (cooling) and nutrification pulses. The extinction pattern was diachronous and facies-controlled in this area, and the last atrypid survivors reached the Frasnian-Famennian (F-F) boundary. Increasing expansion from the adjacent deeper-water environment of the more resistant assemblages, with productids, cyrtospiriferids, athyridids and schizophoriids, occurred in the final crisis interval. This brachiopod fauna profusion characterized the earliest Famennian survival and early recovery phases of the mass extinction in this part of the Laurussian shelf, as well as the continuity of the deeper-water rhynchonellid-inarticulate biofacies across the F-F boundary. Spinatrypina (Exatrypa) relicta sp. n. is proposed as new.

The brachiopod faunas from deposits recording the Early–Middle Frasnian transition of Poland are poorly known. The present report describes these faunas that were recovered from Wietrznia and Kostomłoty (Holy Cross Mountains) and Dębnik (Silesian−Cracow Upland) regions positioned on the southern Polish carbonate shelf. The brachiopod distribution was analysed relative to a significant δ¹³C excursion, referred recently to as Palmatolepis punctata Event. The sporadic occurrence of brachiopods at Dębnik makes it difficult to analyse the biotic response to this geochemical anomaly. However, higher brachiopod frequency in the topmost part of the section coincides with a gradual decrease of δ¹³C down to the Frasnian background values. At two studied sections at Wietrznia the greatest taxonomic diversity and abundance of brachiopods (Flabellulirostrum–Coeloterorhynchus assemblage) are confined to the Palmatolepis transitans Zone. In the following Pa. punctata Zone brachiopods are rare (Biernatella lentiformis assemblage) or absent, which suggests a serious deterioration of the environmental conditions linked probably with periods of benthic anoxia−dysoxia and oligotrophic conditions in the basin. In two Kostomłoty sections brachiopods faunas of this age are members of the mostly monospecific rhynchonellid−dominated Phlogoiderhynchus polonicus assemblage which inhabited deeper−water environments characteristic of intrashelf oxygen−depleted basins of ŁysogóryKostomłoty region. In some horizons large shells of P. polonicus were frequently colonised by discinoid Romerella? sp. Among 28 species described in this report new forms include: Flabellulirostrum kielcensis sp. nov., F. rackii sp. nov., and Thomasaria ventosa sp. nov.

In contrast to dramatic losses of the Atrypida and Pentamerida at the Frasnian–Famennian boundary, the Rhynchonellida demonstrated relatively high rate of survival, and recolonized vacated benthic ecospace after the F–F extinction events. The Late Devonian evolution of rhynchonellid faunas from the East European Platform shows three distinctive periods of their mass appearance. High abundance of rhynchonellids is characteristic for early–middle Frasnian (Palmatolepis transitans–Pa. punctata zones) and early Famennian (Pa. crepida Zone). Invasion of taxonomically diverse and rich rhynchonellid faunas usually corresponds to the major transgressive episodes, whereas decline coincides with regressive conditions of the basin. Rhynchonellid assemblages were replaced in the late Frasnian (Late Pa. hassi–Pa. linguiformis zones) by theodossiid− and cyrtospiriferid−dominated assemblages, which occupied habitats in newly expanding marine environments. The extinction of theodossiids at the end of the Frasnian and the next transgressive episode possibly stimulated an expansion of rhynchonellids. The early Frasnian species Ripidiorhynchus livonicus (Buch, 1834), and the early Famennian R. huotinus (Verneuil, 1845) and R. griasicus (Nalivkin, 1934) are revised. Early Famennian species Paromoeopygma koscharica (Nalivkin, 1934) from the central region is redescribed. Ripidiorhynchus chencinensis sp. nov. from the latest Givetian of Poland, as well as Globulirhynchia minima sp. nov. from the late Frasnian of the central region of the Russia, are described.
