Opis:
Currently, many investigations are being performed to develop dressing materials with a positive effect on the wound healing process. In general, innovative dressings should ensure wound exudate absorption, constitute an external barrier limiting the possibility of wound contamination and, importantly, also provide therapeutic properties. This work is focused on obtaining materials with potential use as dressings for treatment of difficult-to-heal wounds. The synthesis methodology of acrylic hydrogels modified with selected modifiers, i.e. arabic gum, nanogold, bee pollen and chamomile extract, was developed. Next, the sorption properties of the materials were determined as well as their behavior during the incubation in fluids imitating the environment of the human body. Additionally, the impact of such an incubation on their structure was evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopy. It was proved that the modifiers affected the sorption properties of hydrogels, i.e. samples with additives showed even approx. 2.5-fold lower swelling ability. In turn, incubation of hydrogels in simulated body fluids did not cause any rapid changes in pH, which may indicate the biocompatibility of the tested materials with the tested fluids. Thus, it may be concluded that the developed materials show great application potential for biomedical purposes and may be subjected to more advanced studies such as cytotoxicity assessments towards selected cell lines.

Opis:
In this present work, vinasse, a by-product of sugarcane industry, was examined using combined treatment methods to purify it. Electrocoagulation/flocculation, ultrafiltration were applied as pre-treatment and post-treatment, respectively. The effectiveness of combined process was evaluated based on colour, turbidity and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal. The efficiency of electrochemical reactor was investigated according to process variables such as retention time, electrode distance and electrolyte dose. From the results, the price to treat unit vinasse is found to be 2.5 US$/m3 under optimum conditions. FT-IR analysis of sludge obtained shows the results of electro-coagulation process. Ultrafiltration as post treatment experiments showed the enhanced removal efficiency of colour (91%), turbidity (88%) and COD (85%). The results showed that electrocoagulation followed by ultrafiltration is a suitable combined technique to reduce the colour, turbidity and COD from vinasse liquid.

Opis:
The research study evaluated the phytochemical constituents of Methanol extracts of Moringa oleifera whole leaf by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT/IR) analysis. The leaves was washed, air dried for 2 weeks, then ground into a fine powder and extracted using methanol by maceration for 24 hours using standard procedures. After the contact time elapsed, the solvent filtered to recover the extract. The functional groups and the chemical constituents of the methanol extract of Moringa oleifera leaves investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT/IR) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) respectively. The FT/IR analysis confirmed the presence of O-H, C=C, C-H, C-O, CH3 and C=C-H bond stretching functional groups, which indicates that the substance is an aliphatic alcohol, ester, aldehyde and carboxylic acid. However, the fingerprint region had a pattern that is specific for every molecule, the presence of -OH function and N-O stretch; suggest that or alcohols and nitrogen or aromatic or aliphatic phenols containing molecules are major components of the Moringa oleifera leaf studied. GC-MS analysis of the extract reveals the identification of twenty compounds, in which two compounds were identified in each peak. N,N'-Pentamethylenebis[s-3-aminopropyl thiosulfuric acid and 2-Myristynoyl pantetheine (100%), 2-Myristynoyl pantetheine and Deoxyspergualin (92.05%), 5-Octadecenal and 9-Hexadecenoic acid (27.94%). N,N'-Pentamethylenebis[s-3-aminopropyl thiosulfuric acid and Pentetic Acid are the major phytoconstituents. Most of the compounds in the list are bioactive and possess medicinal properties, which further justify the application of Moringa oleifera traditional plant in the discovery of novel therapeutics.
