Opis:
The paper proposes a method for copper sheet oxidation by using a laser beam. The thickness of the oxide layer increases with temperature growth; therefore, the proper parameters of the experiment such as pulse power, frequency and the speed of the beam were adjusted. High power diode laser was used in the investigations. The topography of the oxidised copper sheets was determined using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy with EDS analyses. Optical parameters of the deposited layer were characterised by spectrophotometry. Both roughness and thickness of the investigated samples were measured using the confocal laser scanning microscope. The technological recommendations for the laser micro-machining technology to obtain copper sheet oxidation by using the high power laser beam were selected.

Opis:
The bactericidal and bacteriostatic effects of cop-per have been known for a long time. However, the coatings apart from biological activity should fulfil a number of other requirements, such as tightness, scratch resistance or aesthetic appearance. Researchers have been working on creating durable coatings meeting these requirements for a long time. Scientific research indicates a high interest in active coatings. Nanoscale additives are used, with the aim to modify the material’s performance at the atomic level. Composite coatings allow us to provide the materials multifunctionality, and in addition, can enhance their mutual action. There are many methods for creating such materials. One of the techniques of applying composite coatings is the Cold Spray method, in which the coating is made of a powder. The main purpose of the modification is to obtain a bactericidal and bacteriostatic effect, but also a durable and wear--resistant coating. The paper proposes modifications of copper powder with amorphous submicron titanium dioxide in order to increase its biological activity. The modified powder can be used to create coatings by various methods including thermal methods. The work presents a material analysis of Cu and TiO2powders and results of bactericidal tests carried out on a Cu-TiO2 composite powder. The experiment in-cluded Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The studies have shown a positive effect of the addition of TiO2 on bactericidal properties against both Staphylococcus aureus (Gram-positive bacteria) and Escherichia coli (Gram-negative bacteria) when mixed with copper at 1:9 ratio.

Opis:
The problem of environmental pollution with heavy metals is still serious, despite numerous activities related to the reduction of anthropogenic emissions of these elements into the environment. There is a growing concentration of many toxic metals in soils and vegetation (remaining in close relation with the state of air quality), and especially in the environment of large urban agglomerations. The paper presents an assessment of the degree of contamination of soil and grass vegetation with heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cu, Cd) in the vicinity of the communication over Warsaw. Research material obtained from the same locations (samples of soil and grass vegetation) was analyzed (AAS) in terms of the total concentration of metals in soils and its mobile form, while in plants is the total concentration of the corresponding trace the AAS atomic spectrometry. Based on the concentrations of metals in soil and vegetation samples were determined bioaccumulation factors. Methods mobile metals isolated by selective extraction of a 0.05 M EDTA solution. The results obtained were related to the results of similar research conducted two years earlier in 2005. Additionally the effect of leaching of soluble forms of metal particulate pollutants deposited on the surface of vegetation.

The study analyzed a content of selected trace elements (Fe, Cu, Mn and Zn) in stevia products such as tablets and dried, fully developed leaves being on sale, which were then compared with young leaves and sugar. Stevia is characterized by a high content of micronutrients. The highest content was found in young leaves of stevia. Older leaves contain smaller quantities of micronutrients but still represent a rich source of them. Among analyzed stevia products the tablets contain much less micronutrient than the raw product in a form of dried leaves. Sugar contains only a trace amount of micronutrients.

Opis:
Green tea is used worldwide in the preparation of beverages, but also its extracts rich in bioactive compounds, especially flavan-3-ols, are of increasing interest. In addition to bioactive molecules, green tea represents a source of dietary elements. However, knowledge about their content in extracts is limited. The aim of our research was to determine the extent of transfer of selected elements, i.e., iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), and chromium (Cr), from green teas to their extracts and to investigate whether the main bioactive compounds of the extracts affect this transfer. Twelve commercially available green teas were used in the study. The contents of elements in green teas and their extracts obtained with 80% acetone (v/v) were analysed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). High performance liquid chromatography in reverse phase (RP-HPLC) was used to determine contents of caffeine, (–)-epigallocatechin (EGC), (–)-epicatechin (EP), (–)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), and (–)-epicatechin gallate (ECG). The element with the highest content in green teas was Mn (711–1402 µg/g), but its transfer to extracts was the lowest (0.269–0.646%). The mean Fe transfer, second abundant element in teas (115–725 µg/g), was 5.52%. The contents of Mn and Fe in extracts were 5.08–30.2 and 10.7–90.1 µg/g, respectively. Zn, Cu, and Cr were transferred with means of 10.4, 20.0, and 26.2%, respectively, which resulted in their contents in the extracts in the ranges of 5.03–12.6, 1.93–13.8, and 0.128–2.03 µg/g, respectively. The significant positive correlations of Zn content in extracts and/or transfer to extracts with EGCG, EGC and total flavan-3-ols as well as between the same Fe variables and EGC were determined, which suggested that these flavan-3-ols may positively affect the transfer of Fe and Zn from green tea to extracts. In turn, significant but negative correlations were found in the case of Mn and Cu. Future research is needed to identify the causes of the various transfer rate of elements from green teas to extracts.

In the present work, Cu and Ni nanofluids were synthesized using the pulsed wire evaporation (PWE) method in the different aqueous medias, namely (ethanol and ethylene glycol), and the effects of the aqueous media on the dispersion state, stability, and particle size of nanoparticles were studied. The size and morphology of synthesized nano-particles were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Also, the dispersion stability of the nanofluids was evaluated by turbiscan analysis. The TEM results showed that the nano-particles were spherical in shape, and the average particle size was below 100 nm. The average particle size of the Cu nano-particles was smaller than that of Ni, which was attributed to a difference in the specific sublimation energy of the elements. Moreover, ethylene glycol (EG) exhibited higher suspension stability than ethanol. Finally, the dispersion stability of Cu@EG displayed the highest value due to lower particle size and greater viscosity.

The aim of the studies was to determine the influence of copper and zinc contamination on clopyralid dissipation in soil. The experiment was carried out in laboratory conditions (plant growth chamber). Clopyralid was applied to three different soils [similar textures, pH, organic carbon content and contrasting copper and zinc content: soil natural contaminated with Cu and Zn (S1), soil with natural low Cu and Zn concentration (S2) and soil S21 prepared in the laboratory (S2 soil additionally contaminated with Cu and Zn salts in the amounts equivalent to contamination level of S1 soil)]. Soil samples were taken for analyses for 1 hour (initial concentration) and 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 96 days after treatment. Clopyralid residue was analysed using GC/ECD (gas chromatography with electron capture detector). Good linearity was found between logarithmic concentration of clopyralid residues and time. The differences in Cu and Zn content influenced the clopyralid decay in soil. The values of DT50 obtained in the experiment ranged from 21 to 27 days. A high concentration of Cu and Zn in soil slowed down clopyralid degradation (the DT50 value was higher – 25–27 days).

Opis:
The main threats to human health from heavy metals are associated with exposure to lead, cadmium, mercury and arsenic. These metals have been extensively studied and their effects on human health regularly reviewed by international bodies such as the WHO. Heavy metals have been used by humans for thousands of years. Although several adverse health effects of heavy metals have been known for a long time, exposure to heavy metals continues, and is even increasing in some parts of the world, in particular, in less developed countries. However, over the last 100 years, emissions have declined in most developed countries. Cadmium compounds, the exception, are currently mainly used in re-chargeable nickel-cadmium batteries. Cadmium emissions have increased dramatically during the 20th century, one reason being that cadmium-containing products are rarely re-cycled, but often dumped together with household waste. Cigarette smoking is a major source of cadmium exposure. In non-smokers, food is the most important source of cadmium exposure. Recent data indicate that adverse health effects of cadmium exposure may occur at lower exposure levels than previously anticipated, primarily in the form of kidney damage, but possibly also in bone effects and fractures. Many individuals in Europe already exceed the recommended exposure levels and the margin is very narrow for large groups. Therefore, measures should be taken to reduce cadmium exposure in the general population in order to minimize the risk of adverse health effects. The general population is primarily exposed to mercury via food, fish being a major source of methyl mercury exposure, as is dental amalgam. The general population, however, does not face a significant health risk from methyl mercury, although certain groups with high fish consumption may attain blood levels associated with a low risk of neurological damage to adults. Since there is a risk to the fetus in particular, pregnant women should avoid a high intake of certain fish, such as shark, swordfish and tuna; fish (such as pike, walleye and bass) taken from polluted fresh waters should especially be avoided. There has been a debate on the safety of dental amalgams and claims have been made that mercury from amalgam may cause a variety of diseases. However, there are no studies so far that have been able to show any associations between amalgam fillings and ill health. The general population is exposed to lead from air and food in roughly equal proportions. During the last century, lead emissions to ambient air caused considerable pollution, mainly due to lead emissions from petrol. Children are particularly susceptible to lead exposure due to high gastrointestinal uptake and the permeable blood-brain barrier. Blood levels in children should be reduced below the levels so far considered acceptable as recent data indicates that lead may hold neurotoxic effects at lower levels of exposure than previously anticipated. Although lead in petrol has dramatically decreased over the last decades, thereby reducing environmental exposure, phasing out any remaining uses of lead additives in motor fuels should be encouraged. The use of lead-based paints should also be abandoned, and lead should not be used in food containers. In particular, the public should be aware of glazed food containers, which may leach lead into food. Exposure to arsenic is mainly via intake of food and drinking water, food being the most important source in most populations. Long-term exposure to arsenic in drinking water is mainly related to increased risks of skin cancer, but also enhanced risk of some other cancers, as well as other skin lesions such as hyperkeratosis and pigmentation changes. Occupational exposure to arsenic, primarily by inhalation, is causally associated with lung cancer. Clear exposure-response relationships and high risks have been observed.

The paper investigates the nanoindentation process with different rates in the Cu (001) of FCC system. The indentation process was done using molecular dynamics simulation based on the embedded atom method theory and Morse potential. Simulation process of indentation used a rigid spherical indenter with the diamond structure. To structure characterization we applied the adaptive common neighbour and the dislocation extraction analysis. It was found that the range of the linear change of the indentation force depends on the rate of response of the system. The initial range of the linear dependence of stress evolution also depends on the rate of indentation. Moreover, the average total normal stress in the system is only compressive. After linear changes, we observe oscillating changes in stress evolution. During indentation, for the range of linear changes of stress, dislocations aggregated only around the indenter surface. The creation of dislocations is directly connected with the structural changes. The structure analysis revealed the formation of HCP and BCC structure in the Cu (001) of FCC systems and a correlation with the creation of dislocations.

In this study, biosynthesis of stable copper nanoparticles were prepared by using Ocimum sanctum and Piper nigrum extract. These biosynthesized Cu nanoparticles were characterized with the help of X-Ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The crystalline size of the Copper Nanoparticles prepared from Tulsi extract is little smaller than Copper nanoparticles prepared from Pepper extract. SEM images of Copper nanoparticles showed that the cluster formation, presence of smaller and larger grains. FTIR analysis revealed that the functional groups present in the Copper nanoparticles prepared from both Tulsi and Pepper extracts. Thus, this method can be used for rapid and ecofriendly biosynthesis of stable copper nanoparticles and can be used for catalytic agent, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, anti-biotic, nanosensor, super conducting material, solar cell applications.

Opis:
The paper aimed at determining heavy metal pollution level of the sediments collected from reservoirs that retain rainwater, localized along the national road No. 4. The sediments were sampled from 11 reservoirs on three dates: in May 2007, in April 2008 and in June 2008 in the Sulkow, Biskupice, Bodzanow and Suchoraba villages, along the ca 10 km section of this road. The sediments were dried in the open air, dry-mineralized and dissolved in a mixture of nitric and chloric acids (3:2, v/v). The contents of copper, chromium and nickel were assessed in the obtained solutions by means of ICP-AES method. Copper contents in the analyzed sediments ranged from 9.29 to 102 mg kg–1, with an average for all samples 34.94 mg Cu kg–1. Chromium contents in the studied sediments comprised in limits 12.6–58.1 mg Cr kg–1, with an average value of 27.7 mg Cr kg–1. Nickel quantities assessed in sediments from rainwater reservoirs were within the range of 7.57–25.62 mg Ni kg–1, with an average value of 13.71 mg kg–1. Changeability (RSD) of the studied metal contents between individual reservoirs fluctuated from 18 to 58 %. The amounts of analyzed elements in the sediments from reservoirs receiving runoffs from the road were much smaller than assessed in similar sediments from various cities worldwide. The investigated sediments do not pose any hazard in view of pollution with copper, chromium or zinc. A regular diminishing of copper content in the sediments was observed with increasing distance from Krakow agglomeration. The closest reservoir is situated in Sulkow, 7 km from the Krakow boundaries, near the boundaries of the Wieliczka town. On the other hand, the reservoir in Suchoraba village is about 17 km far from Krakow. Along this stretch copper content in sediment taken from reservoirs that retain rain water diminished several times, what points at a considerable effect of pollution coming from urban centre on this metal level in the sediments. No such dependence was observed for nickel or chromium.
Celem pracy było określenie poziomu zanieczyszczenia metalami ciężkimi osadów pobranych ze zbiorników zlokalizowanych wzdłuż drogi krajowej nr 4 przyjmujących wody deszczowe. Osady pobrano z 11 zbiorników w trzech terminach: maj 2007 r., kwiecień 2008 r. i czerwiec 2008 r. z miejscowości: Sułków, Biskupice, Bodzanów i Suchoraba na odcinku ok. 10 km.

Opis:
A strict experiment on simulated copper, zinc and nickel soil contamination has been performed in concrete-framed microplots, 1 m3 in capacity. White mustard proved to be the most sensitive to nickel contamination of soil and most tolerant to excess copper in the substrate. The concentration of nickel in aerial parts of white mustard increased up to 30-fold, whereas the level of copper was twice as much as in the control. The translocation factors computed for the analysed metals in plants showed that copper was the least transferable from roots to shoots and, as its level rose, increasing quantities of this metal were retained in roots. At higher rates of nickel pollution in soil, white mustard transferred more of this metal to shoots. White mustard is only suitable for phytostabilisation of soils moderately contaminated with copper.
W przypadku wzrastającego poziomu zanieczyszczenia gleby niklem gorczyca przemieszczała ten pierwiastek w coraz większym stopniu do pędów. Gorczyca biała nadaje się do wykorzystania jedynie w procesie fitostabilizacji gleb średnio zanieczyszczonych miedzią.

Methods: The participants were young men (aged 16.60 ± 1.92) from Tanzania (n = 91). Concentrations of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn, K and Na in hair were measured and assessed for correlations between the levels of these trace elements and in underweight and normal weight. Results: A statistically significant relationship of moderate intensity was found between Cu vs. body weight, BMI, Ca, Zn, Fe. Backward stepwise regression analysis for the whole group indicates that the variables included account for 27% (adjusted R2 = 0.27) of the variation in BMI. All the variables included in the equation account for 22% of BMI variation in participants with normal body weight, and for 26% in underweight participants. Conclusions: Analysis of mineral concentrations in hair can help uncover nutritional deficiencies. It can be particularly useful in studying isolated or remote communities. Expanding the body of knowledge on the influence of mineral concentrations on body weight may contribute to halting global weight gain, which is a multi-faceted and seemingly unstoppable phenomenon at the moment.
Nadmierna masa ciała jest obecnie problemem medycznym, społecznym, kulturowym, dużej części mieszkańców niemal wszystkich krajów. Mało jest badań o zależności pomiędzy zawartością pierwiastków w organizmie człowieka a masą ciała (stanem odżywienia) wśród ludności afrykańskiej. Celem prezentowanych badań było zbadanie współzależności między zawartością pierwiastków: Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn, K i Na we włosach a masą ciała u młodych mężczyzn z Tanzanii. Badani to młodzi mężczyźni (16.60 ±1.92 lat) z Tanzanii. Oznaczono zawartość Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Zn, K i Na we włosach i zbadano stopień korelacji pomiędzy zawartością analizowanych pierwiastków a kategorią BMI. Istotną statystycznie zależność, o średnim natężeniu wykazywała Cu vs. masy ciała, BMI, Ca, Zn, Fe. Wszystkie zmienne uwzględnione w równaniu regresji w 22% wyjaśniły zmienność BMI w grupie osobników o prawidłowej masie ciała, a w 26% dla badanych z niedowagą.

Opis:
Wcześniejsze badania nad wykształceniem litologicznym i zasobnością Cu złóż LGOM-u, wskazują na istnienie zależności pomiędzy miąższością serii łupkowej a zasobnością Cu serii węglanowej.
Earlier studies on lithological structure and accumulation index of Cu in LGOM deposits showed a relationship between thickness of shale ore and accumulation index of Cu in the carbonate ore. Statistical analysis of the thickness of shale ore and accumulation index of Cu in the carbonate ore indicates a high variability of these parameters and occurrence in the dataset anomalous values. The correlation testing using Pearson and Spearman coefficients generally resulted in a statistically significant but relatively very poor results with correlation coefficients slightly exceeding 0.15.

Opis:
Using a spray pneumatic technique, cobalt (Co) and copper (Cu) co-doped zinc oxide thin films were effectively deposited on a glass substrate. The goal of this work was to create a semiconductor with good optical and electrical properties by co-doping ZnO thin films with Cu and Co. The ZnO thin films obtained from the Co and Cu co-doping exhibit patterns of x-ray diffraction spectra that suggest they are hexagonal ZnO (wurtzite, JCPDS 36-1451). The thin film elaborated with 2 % Co and 7 % Cu has the lowest value of crystallite size (D = 14.67 nm). The transmission spectra demonstrate that all films have good optical transparency in the visible spectrum, with 7 % Cu achieving the highest transmission. Increasing Cu contents raised the band gap energy. The value at the minimum was 3.31 eV. The optical band gap’s broadening is a significant characteristic of advanced materials and may be useful in applications involving metal oxide nanostructures for visible light gas sensing.
