The notion of “Western Christianity” appeared in historical and geographical literature in the 19th century.  According to Pew Research Center, Christians were the largest religious group in 2015, constituting 31% of the world population. From the research results of this centre it can be inferred that the world is becoming more and more religious: the number of people describing themselves as religious has increased in the world from 82% in 1970 to 88% in 2013 and it will reach 90% in 2020, as it is predicted in the report.               The religious vitality among young people is especially important for the future of Christianity in Western Europe as well as more generally – in Europe.               Overall, it can be concluded that religion constitutes an unfamiliar aspect of life for most young Europeans. For the future of Christianity in Europe, mainly in Western Europe, it has a pessimistic overtone.

Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie syntetycznego uporządkowania zawartej w późnych pismach Kierkegaarda krytyki oficjalnego chrześcijaństwa, czyli tego, co w świecie funkcjonuje pod nazwą „chrześcijaństwo”, a co w rzeczywistości zdaniem Duńczyka nim nie jest. Artykuł otwiera zarys niezbędnej dla zrozumienia tej krytyki pozytywnej koncepcji chrześcijaństwa u Kierkegaarda, w szczególności jego idei naśladowania Chrystusa. Dalej omówione są trzy główne zarzuty, jakie wysuwa Duńczyk: (1) prowadzenie pogańskiego życia pod nazwą chrześcijaństwa, (2) zastąpienie naśladowania Chrystusa rozmaitymi aktywnościami werbalnymi, m.in. uczynienie z chrześcijaństwa doktryny, oraz (3) zastąpienie naśladowania Chrystusa oddawaniem mu czci. Te trzy zarzuty uzupełnione są (4) Kierkegaardowską krytyką stanu duchownego. W końcowej części zostaje postawiona teza, że przedstawiona przez Kierkegaarda krytyka ma charakter uniwersalny, tzn. dotyczy wszystkich głównych wyznań chrześcijańskich.
The paper aims at presenting a synthetic reconstruction of Kierkegaard’s late critique of what he called “official Christianity,” that is that which in the world counts as Christianity but which, according to Kierkegaard, has nothing to do with real Christianity. The paper begins with a short presentation of what according to Kierkegaard the essence of real Christianity is, with special emphasis on his idea of imitating Christ. Then his main reproaches follow: (1) leading a pagan life and calling it Christian, (2) rejection of imitation of Christ and putting some verbal activities instead, and (3) rejection of imitation of Christ and worshiping him instead. Those three points are supplemented by Kierkegaardian (4) critique of clergy. In the final section it is argued that Kierkegaard’s critique is universal in scope, i.e. it concerns all major Christian denominations.

In the springtime of 2014, incidents, that happened in the eastern part of Ukraine, led to take control over the Crimean Peninsula by the Russian Federation. At the same time, from the Donetsk region, came the information about many acts of violence, directed against the clergy and worshippers of the Christian communities other than the Russian Orthodox Church, supportive for the Kremlin authorities. Those incidents led us to formulate the following research question: what is the situation of the churches on the annexed peninsula? And further, the hypothesis that the situation of the churches on the annexed peninsula, except for the Russian Orthodox Church, has deteriorated. The research material, used in the article, is mostly based on the Ukrainian, Russian and English Internet sources, which have been analyzed in a quantitative and a qualitative way. As a result of these activities, the following communities have been distinguished to be analyzed: the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate, the Catholic Church of the Ukrainian-Byzantine rite, the Roman Catholic Church and various Protestant churches. The text, constructed on the „subject-problem” system, has been divided into two main parts and the conclusion section. Following the research, it has been found that the legal position of the churches operating on the peninsula, except for the Russian Orthodox Church, had deteriorated. The admission of the Russian solutions regarding religious laws makes the implementation of the church activities (missional, pastoral, educational and charitable), as well as the cooperation with foreign partners much more difficult. Breach of the previous religious freedom on the Crimean Peninsula can be considered as a form of a persecution. The analysis of our sources allowed us to notify that the scale of repressions that the churches encounter, is diÄ erent. In the most difficult position is the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Kiev Patriarchate, competitive with the Russian Orthodox Church. The situation of the Catholic Church of the Ukrainian-Byzantine rite, as well as the situation of the Evangelical churches (well-known for their inner missions) does not look better. The Catholic Church has also suffered from particular difficulties. In the light of the above analysis, we might conclude that the research hypothesis has been positively verified. We have emphasized that the current position of the analyzed churches from the annexed Crimean Peninsula is a consequence of the recent political conditions and the speci' city of the interdenominational relations existing in Ukraine, as well as the close ties between the Kremlin and the Russian Orthodox Church. These connections are also a result of the actions undertaken by Vladimir Putin, in order to find new methods to legitimize his own political power. Consequently, he creates a framework for a „new national myth”, focusing on relations with the Russian Orthodox Church and the church traditions. The difficulties faced by churches described in the text, reflect the practices used in the Russian Federation towards „foreigners” minority communities (perceived as a threat to the confessional security of the country) before 2014. Some of these actions involuntarily led us to connotations with the persecutions of Christians and representatives of other religions, described by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in the first volume of the Gulag Archipelago (1973).

There is a strong and original relationship between Christian faith and Humanism, but it is necessary not to reduce the Christian education to Humanism. In fact, it was the Christian faith which gave birth to Humanism, not vice versa. It is necessary to put the distinction in order to avoid the reduction of the Christian education to the generic philanthropy. The Christian faith is, first of all, an encounter with Jesus, not only from the existential point of view, but also as a peculiar knowledge through Christ as God’s Word.

Gianni Vattimo, who is both a Catholic and a frequent critic of the Church, explores the surprising congruence between Christianity and hermeneutics in light of the dissolution of metaphysical truth. As in hermeneutics, Vatimo claims, interpretation is central to Christianity. Influenced by hermeneutics and borrowing largely from the Nietzschean and Heideggerian heritage, the Italian philosopher, who has been instrumental in promoting a nihilistic approach to Christianity, draws here on Nietzsche’s writings on nihilism, which is not to be understood in a purely negative sense. Vattimo suggests that nihilism not only expands the Christian message of charity, but also transforms it into its endless human potential. In “The Age of Interpretation,” the author shows that hermeneutical radicalism “reduces all reality to message,” so that the opposition between facts and norms turns out to be misguided, for both are governed by the interpretative paradigms through which someone (always a concrete, historically situated someone) makes sense of them. Vattimo rejects some of the deplorable political consequences of hermeneutics and claims that traditional hermeneutics is in collusion with various political-ideological neutralizations.

Epistolary writing has been known for ages and has won a significant position in the history of literature. One of the most intriguing exchanges of letters known from the 20th century started nine days before the wedding of the renowned artist Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz with an aristocrat Jadwiga von Urunh. The first letter is dated to the 21st of March 1923 and the last on the 24th of August 1939. The letters of Witkacy to his wife have been for many years surrounded by a veil of mystery. They can be read as a history of a certain relationship, a study of loneliness, a historical and social life chronicle or as a comment on artistic activity. The set comprises 1278 letters, postcards and wires. In this edition it is divided into two equal parts of which the first one includes the letters, while the second presents the commenting notes written by Professor Janusz Degler. The editors divided the whole set into four parts of which three volumes of Witkacy’s letters to his wife from the years 1923–1927, 1928–1931, 1932–1935 have already been published. Unfortunately, none of the letters written by Jadwiga to her husband has been found, so we know the correspondence exclusively from the side of a daily writer Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz.

Is it possible to respond to contemporary challenges of Christianity from the meta-perspective of philosophy and cultural studies? We have divided the articles presented here into three groups: challenges faced by religion regarding science, challenges of secularisation, and challenges in the Church itself. The articles from the volume do not address these problems in totally different ways. The issues of consistency and rationality of religion become reinterpreted, for example when compared to results of empirical sciences, but also in a broadly understood public debate. We shall try to show a close relationship between the Christian religion and such phenomena as: science, media, churches, medicine, war, law, etc. Our point of departure is a search for the current function of Christianity, with the Catholic Church in the centre, but the questions transcend the present state of a particular religion.

Przedmiotem niniejszego opracowania jest rozumienie religii w ogóle i chrześcijaństwa w szczególności. Celem zaś – ukazanie istoty religii oraz specyfiki chrześcijaństwa. Problematyka badawcza dotyczy istoty religii, na którą wskazują jej definicje oraz funkcje. Udzielono odpowiedzi na pytania: Czym to jest religia? Jakie są jej komponenty, składowe? Jakie elementy ją konstytuują? W artykule wykorzystano metodę analizy i krytyki piśmiennictwa oraz analizę fenomenologiczną i syntetyczną. Właściwe zrozumienie istoty religii, w tym chrześcijaństwa, które skoncentrowane jest na Bogu w Trójcy Jedynym i Jezusie Chrystusie oraz człowieku, ma szereg implikacji dla praktyki. Pozwala m.in. demaskować manipulację religią w życiu społecznym i politycznym. Poznanie chrześcijaństwa jako religii może stanowić przygotowanie do dialogu interkulturowego, międzyreligijnego oraz ekumenicznego. Ważne tu jest teoretyczne przygotowanie, które daje podstawę do aktywnego, praktycznego zaangażowania się w dzieło dialogu, a także w dzieło edukacji, nie tyko młodego pokolenia.
The subject of this text is religion in general and Christianity in particular. The aim is to show the essence of religion and the uniqueness of Christianity. The research issues concern the essence of religion, which is indicated by its definitions and functions. The following questions are addressed: What is religion? What are its components? What elements constitute it? In the article, the methods of critical analysis of texts and phenomenological and synthetic analysis were used. The proper understanding of religion as such, including Christianity, which is focused on the Triune God and Jesus Christ and man, has a number of implications in everyday life. Therefore, it is necessary to know the essence of religion and the nature of Christianity in order to unmask attempts at manipulating religion in social and political life. Getting to know Christianity as a religion can prepare one for intercultural, interreligious, and ecumenical dialogue. What is important here is theoretical preparation, which provides the basis for active, practical involvement in the process of dialogue and education, not only of the younger generation.

This paper analyses the drawing entitled Christiani ad leones, one of few multi-figural compositions in Cyprian Norwid's artistic output. The work represents the scene of Neron's trial on four Christians, among whom we find saint Peter and saint Paul. The theme of composition draws on to the strong tradition of the Catholic Church that speaks of the death of the two saints who died as martyrs. It was supposed to take place during the first persecution of Christians in Rome (in 64 AD). Starting from the theme and particular elements of representation, the author went on to search for iconographic sources, compositional and stylistic analysis of the drawing. Accordingly, she referred both to traditional Christian iconography and to Norwid's contemporary historical painting. Within this type of drawing there were two opposite visions of antiquity, and from the mid-nineteenth century onward the problems of the martyrdom of the first Christian appeared. The author indicates also the attributes that combine Christiani ad leones with the then academic painting. The essential element of the analysis is its correspondence to plastic and literary works made by Norwid. The artist had a tendency to confer universal meanings on the presented events.

The paper raises the issue of the functioning of Christian tradition in (post)modern Bulgarian literature in the perspective of the typical for the Western mass culture exploitation of biblical images in order to deal with various "totalisms". The subject is a novel by Philip Dimitrov Светлина на човеци (2003), which paraphrases the New Testament themes makes a (re)construction of the image of the first Christians’ comunity and aspires to create a message in accordance with Christian canon. The text appears to be an apology of God's creation and its freedom and, consequently, to stand up for the institution of the Church and the Christian roots of Bulgarian culture. However, as adapting heterodox motifs, in fact, it raises a question about the boundaries of Orthodoxy and the definition of strategy of evangelization. The aim of this paper is to interpret the modern term of apocrypha in the perspective of the essentially ambivalent experience of postmodernism and posttotalitarism, as a testimony of the worldview exploration of the writer (and the entire epoch).
